A horizontal type water-driven mill existed in Drum, located within the confines of the monastic boundary. It was probably operated by Patrician monks at the nearby monastery. Horizontal mills were the first type of corn grinding mill introduced into Ireland in 250BC by King Cormac MacAirt.
