PRE-CONCOURS DETAIL CLINIC
Following our Santa Barbara Breakfast Meeting
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 11AM-2PM
At LAVAGGIO in Agoura Hills
In preparation for our 35th Annual Concours d’Elegance, we’ve scheduled a Detail Clinic to
teach you how to better prepare your car for competition (or fun) in less time. Learn new
techniques and discover all the latest products to make your car sparkle. Understand the Zone
8 competition rules and find out exactly what the judges look for when examining a car.
Expert instruction will be provided by our own Dick Douglass, an experienced Concours Judge.
A detailing demonstration will show the best way to use the newest products in preparing
your Porsche. Plus, lunch will be served at the beautiful Lavaggio facility at 30205 Canwood
Street, Agoura Hills (Reyes Adobe exit off the 101).
The price for the clinic and lunch is only $15.00 per person (at the door).
If you plan to attend, please make a reservation no later than September 5, 2011.

President’s Column
F
Bill Sampson
irst this month, may I furnish a word about our
sponsors? In the last two months, they will have
each made a significant contribution, over and above
financial, to the success of our club. The Auto Gallery
sponsored the Gimmick Rally in June, which was enjoyed by all
who participated. I am composing this column immediately after
the very successful July 31 autocross sponsored by Santa Barbara
Porsche. “Tech support” for the autocross, consisting of 62 vehicle
inspections, was generously furnished by our friends at Schneider
Autohaus. Although the publication deadline means that my
prose is prospective as to the following, Rusnak Porsche will have
hosted any member who signs up at a Member Appreciation Day
where their mechanics will work on their Saturday day off to help
us take a discerning look at the needs of our cars. Sure these
folks are promoting businesses, but their efforts go far beyond
the commercial aspects; we all have made lasting friendships at
each of these establishments. Our club thanks all of you. I’ll add
a word of thanks to our many advertisers – in large part thanks to
you we are lucky to have the best local car club magazine I have
ever seen.
You’ll see a full article on the Chili Cook-Off in this issue. Thank you Jim & Terry Middlebrook and everyone who
participated. Mark the fourth Saturday in July, in pencil if you
wish, each year for this event. The Middlebrooks enjoyed their
“executive” parking spot at the Camarillo breakfast. If you don’t
know what I am talking about here, see the Chili Cook-Off article
on Page 16, or the Camarillo Breakfast article on Page 7.
Stars of television, Hal & Terry Jandorf led us on a trip to Mt.
Pinos, where we could gaze upon the stars of the universe. The
trip was enlightening and fun. More appears on Page 13.
The efforts of everyone involved in the July 31 autocross
were over the top. I competed for the first time in the 356, and
am proud to say I finished first in my class. A little luster was
removed from that achievement when someone pointed out that
I had also finished last in my class. Suffice it to say, it was fun
for me, and to all appearances, to all who participated. A special
thanks to Porsche Factory Driver John Lewis, who spent most of
the day riding along with us amateurs, providing pointers. Fellow
first timer Ingrid Martin dropped her lap time by eight seconds
when John rode with her! Her ear-to-ear grin was priceless.
Even almost 50 years later, I wake up in a cold sweat the night
of the second Sunday in September, thinking school will start the
next morning. Once that nightmare has concluded I’ll head to
our web site: pcasb.org and discover I’ve already missed both
4
September breakfasts, the detail clinic on September 10 (see Page
2) and the PMS Boat adventure. Don’t you miss them. Also see
Page 29 for the James Dean run September 25. October 9 will
bring our concours. See Page 15 to sign up. Karen Turek will
chair a raffle at that event, the proceeds of which will benefit
Habitat for Humanity. Donations will be gratefully accepted
to lend some excitement to that raffle. We’ll also need lots of
volunteers to help the concours run smoothly. Our hard-working autocross crew will put on yet another
one on October 29, this one an “extra,” and this time specifically
to benefit the aforesaid charity. Please sign up to drive, help,
participate AND bring your family/friends out for a day of fun
that will help some folks looking only for a hand up, not a hand
out. We are planning a fun day. See Page 30. As activities chair
Ted Lighthizer says, “Keep the shiny side up.”
From The Editor’s Desk
John Alfenito
A
s we approach the fourth quarter on
the events calendar, things get busy,
which is good. It gives us all a wide variety
of activities from which to choose, and fills
up the pages of Der Auspuff with articles
that will, hopefully, inspire you to participate with this fun club.
This month, Ted Lighthizer contributes a great story on the
15th Annual Chili Cook-Off held at the beautiful home of Jim &
Terry Middlebrook in Santa Rosa Valley. And, not only did Ted
write the article, he entered his chili recipe in the event, and took
first place(!), scoring the coveted Lady Scoville Perpetual Trophy.
Congratulations to Ted. That was some darned good chili!
From the Astronomy Department of Moorpark College,
Hal & Terry Jandorf, once again, took a large contingent of SBR
members up Mt. Pinos for spectacular star-gazing. It’s amazing
what you can see in the night sky when you are outside the
interference of the “light pollution” from the L.A. metropolis.
David & Susan Stone offer the concluding part of their
“treffen” adventure this month. I’m sure their descriptions have
more than a few of us considering similar adventures in the
future.
Lots to do; lots to read about. Until next month...

The Optimist Creed
Promise yourself:
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,
And too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Alternate Vehicles Outnumbered By Porsches
Story & Photos by John Alfenito
A
lternate Vehicle Month kicked off with a huge gathering
for our August Camarillo Breakfast. More than 140
participants arrived at the Way-Point Café, but most were
driving their Porsches. In fact, the 64 Porsches on the lawn far
outnumbered the “alternate” models, but there was a wide variety
of “others,” nonetheless. From Dinos to AMGs to a Honda S60,
there was plenty to look at and lots to discuss.
President Bill Sampson called the meeting to order, introducing
Membership Chair Janice Herndon, who provided the daily tallies
of members and cars present. Activities Co-Chair Ted Lighthizer
promoted the upcoming calendar of SBR events, including the
Rusnak Westlake/SBR Appreciation Day event to be held the
following Saturday. Rusnak Service Manager Sam Abergel spoke
briefly, inviting everyone to come to Rusnak for this free event.
As the meeting came to a close, many members were looking
forward to the “Porsches2Pinos 2” event scheduled for that
evening. Moorpark Astronomy Professor and SBR member Hal
Jandorf would once again take a group to the top of Mt. Pinos for
some star-gazing, unobstructed by the city lights. A full report on
this fun event is on Page 13. =

hen the humidity is high enough for a swipe (or two)
of the windshield wipers, last-minute travel plans can
change. Perhaps more than a few “alternate vehicles”
of the classic era stayed safely in their garages this morning, but
a strong group of 29 Porsches filled the Moby Dick parking lot
on Stearns Wharf. The 54 members and guests were treated to a
roomfull of friends and good conversation.
SBR President Bill Sampson introduced Membership Chair
Janice Herndon, who recognized new members Frank & Anna
Donahue from Ventura, Rod & Camille Conde of Thousand Oaks,
and Stan & Ellen Windrem from Ventura. Also, it was duly noted
that our good friend and SBR collaborator, Randy Leffingwell, is
now officially (and finally) a member of the Santa Barbara Region!
Activities Co-Chair Doreen Pankow promoted the upcoming
calendar of region events including the two Camarillo Autocrosses
this month and next, the second event (Oct 29) to benefit our 2011
designated charity, Habitat for Humanity. Also, the numerically
significant date of 9/10/11 was sited for both the upcoming P.M.S.
event and the Pre-Concours Detail Clinic. It was also pointed out,
much to the crowd’s delight, that 9/10/11 is Doreen’s birthday!

he tour of Montecito enjoyed by
16 R.U.F.ians on July 19, 2011
was originally scheduled for
mid-April, but rainy weather
forced its postponement. No such
problem this time as clear blue skies and
mild temperatures greeted our group in
Summerland’s Lookout Park.
This route (designed by Bob Roe and
Suzi Sheller, with assistance from Tom
& Arthea Hermann), would take about
45 minutes to navigate, and cover
approximately 15 miles.
A notable and unexpected sight
occurred as we gathered at Lookout Park.
All the Porsches were either black or
silver – except the one driven by Fritz and
Gretchen Olenberger. They arrived in their
very bright orange special edition Boxster,
and it caught everyone’s attention. A stark
contrast to all the other vehicles, it was
placed in the middle of the pack during
the drive to serve as a beacon for those
that might have fallen behind.
We left the park at 11 a.m. and
proceeded straight ahead under the 101

We provided three large telescopes to enhance the view of the
cosmos. We were lucky with the weather, encountering perfectly
clear skies and a refreshing 55 F nighttime temperature. It was
like Mother Nature’s air conditioning compared to the heat
of the summer day. However, it did seem to get a bit warmer
after sunset, due to the high pressure that dominates Southern
California.
There were no incidents, and no accidents to report. No
automotive breakdowns, or unfriendly bears, but a few members
spotted a few meteors (“falling stars”).
The brand new Holiday Inn was very accommodating for
tired stargazers. The free breakfast was great, with sausage patties,
biscuits and gravy, pastries, fruit and cereals.
The two-hour drive on Lockwood Road and SR33 was a
special treat for people who love driving on Sunday morning.
What a road trip! Members extending the stay to Day Two were
treated to continual esses, elevation changes, sweepers, sharp
curves, roller coaster dips at high speed, and constantly changing,
beautiful scenery!
Our last stop was the Garden Terrace restaurant in Ojai. We
had a serene ambiance outside with great food, comfortable
round tables allowing for shared camaraderie without cramming,
and a large group at a long table. A perfect lunch was the icing on
the cake of a perfect weekend. But I think members’ comments
are more “down to earth” than my descriptions. (See the reviews
on Page 14.) =

Porsches2Pinos: 2 • The Reviews Are In!
Porsches 2 Pinos 2 was successful not just from an artistic point of
view, that is a chance to learn more of the universe around us, but also,
important to this club officer, from a camaraderie and club building
point of view . A number of newer and younger members attended. We especially enjoyed their company and their enthusiasm for a great
event. Thank you to Hal and Terry.
Bill and Rosemary Sampson
The stargazing event was a wonderful way for us to learn about
the night sky from a very knowledgeable teacher. Hal’s teaching
experience with young adults came in handy with the sometimes
easily distracted Porsche group. I always enjoy the Porsche drive
the next morning and lunch in Ojai as much as the night event. Hal
somehow texts the cars on the road ahead of us to pull onto the
turnouts and allow us through. What a great event!
Janice Herndon
This was our first Santa Barbara chapter event and we really
enjoyed it. Thank you so much for all your efforts and those of your
astronomer friends for making this such a great event. The drive up
to Mt. Pinos was beautiful, we met lots of friendly people, and nature
cooperated by providing us with a beautiful clear night. We saw
many wonderful objects through the various telescopes including a
number of very dramatic views of the Moon, Saturn, star clusters and
the like. The Sunday drive through Lockwood Valley and then down to
Ojai on 33 was great, and it could not have been a more perfect day
for driving. We look forward to seeing you again.
Mark Stankevich and Victoria Meyers
We had fun, learned a lot and froze. All good. The drive back to
Ojai on Sunday was delightful, a celebration of where we live and
what we drive.Slower traffic actually used the turnouts to let us pass
unimpeded! Amazing!
Joe and Kathie Schneider
Thank you again for the great weekend of experiencing the night
sky. We learned even more this time. It is so exciting to be able to “see”
what is out there! The roads to drive were fun as well, and of course the
“group experience” makes for a total great weekend.
Diane & Mike Macdonell
Thanks for the wonderful event you planned and pulled off with
great aplomb! I think we were all amazed by your star-spangled
showcase that informed and amused us all. We were dazzled by
nebulae, twin star systems, the awesome rings of Saturn, the demise
of Polaris as the brightest star in the night sky and a host of other
heavenly bodies, including two wish-making falling stars! The ride
back was fantastic with great roads, a great pace, a parade of Porsches
and a wonderful lunch to cap off the weekend. Looking forward to
joining you and Terry on the next stargazer!
Robert Franssen
Thank you for a wonderful time! We really enjoyed the company,
lessons on astronomy and wonderful drive. The beautiful scenic drives
up to Mt Pinos and between Mt. Pinos and Ojai were spectacular. We
learned a lot about the galaxy, planets, constellations and stars. It was
amazing by how quickly and easily you were able to find the nebulas
and stars through the telescope using the laser sight. Thanks again.
Andrew Louie
Manish and I joined at the last minute for this wonderful trip so
well organized by Hal Jandorf to the very last detail. It was an absolute
adrenalin rush as an army of Porsches glided up Mount Pinos to learn
more about the universe. Hal was so patient with all of us as we asked
questions that he usually gets from third graders. Never having seen
Saturn and the moon so up close through a telescope before, this was
a surreal experience for me. Manish was thrilled just to be following
Hal’s green pointer in the sky through his binoculars and learning
more about the various constellations. It was fun-filled, educational
and humbling. I may just become a more frequent stargazer. Highly
recommended! Kirti Deshpande and Manish Chitnis
Thank you for an awesome trip. My most favorite part was Saturn,
and being able to view the rings. We saw a couple of shooting stars
too, of course we know they are not really stars! Please thank your friends for sharing their telescopes with us. It
made the lines shorter and we got to see more. Looking forward to next year. Thanks again. Christine Taylor and Oscar Esquivel

15th Annual
Chili Cook-Off
A Tasty Treat
F
By Ted Lighthizer
or the fifth year in a row, Jim & Terry Middlebrook
offered their lovely home to host one of the club’s
most popular events, the annual chili cook-off. This
friendly competition was originally hosted by Bob &
Jeanette Bassett at their Camarillo home from 1997 to 2006. Everyone seemed to have a great time talking and making new
relationships, which of course is the primary purpose of the event.
Seventy-three members attended this year’s cook-off and 11
different chili recipes were entered in the competition. Members
served as judges, taking samples scooped from each separate chili
pot, and then evaluating each by preference, voting for #1, #2, and
#3. The buffet line moved quickly thanks to the efficiency of our
chili servers: Phyllis Weaver, Luz Mosesson, Pam Alfenito, Susan
Stone, Linda Rubino and Stephanie Martin.
After feasting on delicious appetizers, salads, and breads and
tasting all the different recipes of chili, it was time for members
to vote for their favorite chili. Barry & Valerie Weinstein counted
and certified the ballots, and then Barry announced the winners.
Ilene Freeman won 3rd prize for the second year in a row, and
was given a fine assortment of auto detailing products. Jim &
Terry Middlebrook won 2nd prize and received an even larger
assortment of detailing goodies, complete with micro fiber towels
and wash bucket. A big thank-you goes to Dick Douglass for

Middlebrooks on behalf of the club, thanking Jim & Terry for
hosting this fun event each year. They were presented with
a reserved parking space, complete with a personalized sign

T
he July 31st autocross at Earl
Warren Showgrounds actually
started a day earlier with a
driver’s clinic at Santa Barbara
Auto Group. Ben Schroeder from SBAG,
our autocross sponsor, had arranged to
have John Lewis, an instructor from the
Porsche Sport Driving School, available for
a clinic and question-and-answer period
on Satuday afternoon. From 3-5 p.m. John
talked to 20 of our members, giving them
a better understanding of car dynamics,
control, and what an autocross or DE is all
about.
The day of an autocross starts early
for the organizers and volunteers. And
this Sunday was no different. I arrived
at the event site about 4:45 a.m. with the
equipment trailer in tow. Figuring I would
be the first one there, I was surprised to
see the silhouette of a 911 in the dark
parking lot. Art Grimmet had arrived
before me, and promptly raised his coffee
cup and asked for a refill. Art has always
been a great supporter of the AX events
and was a welcome sight so early the
morning. My son Shane and I started
to unload the contents of my family
Suburban with Art’s help. It was only a
few minutes later that my Dad showed
up to help us for the morning, making it

duty. My Co-Chair Martin Keller was next
arriving and the clock was just striking
5:00 a.m.
Martin was the mastermind behind
the course design, which consisted of 41
corners in .61 miles, and along with Art
and Shane, he began the process of course
layout. By 6:00 a.m., several of the drivers
and other volunteers had shown up. Ted
Lighthizer and Doreen Pankow seem to be
at every event the club does, and were at
this one with the high level of enthusiam
only they can bring. Ted jumped in on
course duty, while Doreen made sure
everyone signed the waiver form, and had

a bracelet fitted. David Stone showed a
little later in morning to help with waivers
and gate patrol.
By 7:30 a.m. the course was complete.
Most everyone had been through tech, and
made their way to registration to get their
AX packet. Janice Herndon did a fantastic
job managing the registration during the
morning, especially since she had just
returned from vacation the night before.
Henry Hinck from Schneider Autohaus
once again was “tech inspecting” the cars
with help from his staff. Our timing team
of Jeff Merrick and Jeff Parker was joined
by a new volunteer, Nick Sibersky. These
three guys made sure the timing was
correct and ran flawlessly.
The drivers’ meeting started at 8:00
a.m., and I was able to give everyone a
firm talking-to before we let them loose.
Mike Turek, our new Safety Chair, was
on site to make sure we adhered to all the
rules and regulations that keep us safe. I
introduced everyone to John Lewis, our
guest instructor from PSDS. John was
there to help anyone who asked for it, and
I can’t remember him ever not being in a
car or helping a driver learn the course in
some way. It was nonstop for John, but he
seemed to enjoy it. Our own Goodie Store,
manned by the Rubinos, was on site to
make sure anyone who felt the urge for a
little shopping was satisfied. My son even
found something to get that lightened
my wallet but was well worth it. Walt

plenty of fantastic food. You know the

The official timed runs took up
the afternoon, and we had some very
competitive laps. The talent was deep for
this event, and the timing crew figured it
would come down to not only a fast run,
but a clean run. At the end of the official

right on his heels, but Henry was mistake
free with a very fast run. I would like to

A Treffen To Remember, Part II
An Eight-Day European Adventure Behind The Wheel of A Porsche C4S Coupe
By David & Susan Stone
H
ave you ever thought about
visiting the birthplace of
Porsche? Driving the German
Autobahn at high speed in
a 911? Touring on back roads through
the beautiful Austrian countryside and
over the Alps? Sampling the local cuisine
in ancient castles and farmhouses? Or
visiting the original Porsche factory, the
new factory and new Porsche museum? Recently, five SBR members and a guest
did just that and more on an eightday “Treffen” (German for meeting),
sponsored by PCA and Fast Lane Travel,
Inc. of Clearwater, Florida. It was truly a
bucket-list experience to remember. The
first part of our journey was documented
in last month’s issue. This month we
present the concluding chapter.
On Thursday, both Treffen groups took
a motor coach to the Porsche factory and
museum. Beginning with the museum,
we thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour
through this architectural marvel that
provides a showplace for Porsche models
developed over more than 60 years. After
the tour, there was time to browse on our
own, take pictures of the beautiful cars
on display and shop in the boutique on
the first floor. The museum also offers a
highly rated restaurant for those who wish
to spend the day.
Some of us took time to visit the
dealership directly across the street. This
two- story structure had a nice inventory
of new and used models, including two
Carrera GTs, and a high-end boutique
offering clothing, luggage and other items. It was interesting to note that the price
of a new Porsche purchased in Germany
is much higher than one purchased in
America. Porsche heavily subsidizes the
cars sold here to maintain a strong market. Thank you, Porsche!
At noon we walked to the Porsche
Factory grounds across the street and had
lunch on the top floor with management
personnel and customers taking delivery
of their new cars. Once again, we found
the cuisine delicious and the service
impeccable.
After lunch, we separated into two
groups for our factory tour. Our guide
was a graduate student who worked part
time for the company. We visited the parts
delivery department, the engine assembly
plant and the body assembly plant. We
watched as the completed cars came off
the assembly line for transfer to the final
inspection area and to new car delivery. During our tour, we encountered PCA
President Manny Alban and members
of his executive staff who had come
to Germany to meet with Porsche
management and were also on a factory
tour. We would meet them again for
dinner that night.
Dinner was indeed something special
that evening. We took a motor coach to
Castle Beilstein for a raucous medieval
dinner. We were met by a bagpipe player
wearing pointed shoes and bells on his
right ankle who led us, bagpipe skirling,
up the steep pathway surrounded by
vineyards to the castle entrance. After
champagne on the fortress wall, we
entered the cellar where the meal was
served. We were issued large bibs as the
roast pig and other meats were presented
on platters. Our large steins were kept full
throughout the evening as periodic salutes
were yelled out by the guests at each table. Julie was selected to carry out the tradition
of pouring schnapps down the throats of
willing guests, which included Manny and
his wife. Manny then presented Peter
with a PCA flag commemorating the
long-term relationship PCA has enjoyed
with Fast Lane Travel. PCA national staff
conducted video interviews with some
of the Treffen participants about their
experiences. Look for them on the PCA
website.
On Friday, we were treated to a private
tour of the Tech Art headquarters in
Leonberg where skilled workers customize
Porsches to their owners’ specifications. Modifications can be made to the body,
interior, suspension and engine to enhance
what Porsche provides. We saw work
being done on a dozen cars, including
several Cayennes, and a fully modified
Panamera was one of the cars on the
showroom floor. The company now has
a facility in Texas to better serve the U.S.
market.

Later that afternoon, Both Treffen
groups headed out to the Cannstatter
Volksfest (Beer Festival) in the Grandl’s
Hofbrau Zelt. This is one huge annual
celebration under an immense tent and is
reported to be more fun than the Munich
Oktoberfest. We all thoroughly enjoyed
the good food, ample spirits and the local
revelry. The German people certainly
know how to party!
Returning to our hotel in the early
evening, a few of us again walked the
Konigstrasse where displays were being
staged for the 125th Anniversary of the
Automobile celebration scheduled for the
following day. All the major automobile
manufacturers had a presence, and a large
number of privately owned vintage cars
were also displayed on the lawns. We
learned that Porsche #1 and other historic
models would be driven to the site from
the museum to join the celebration. Unfortunately, our train to Frankfurt left
in the morning, and we had to miss the
festivities.
This was truly a unique, fun-filled week
that we will all remember. Peter Sontag
is a master of organization and attends to
every detail, right down to the gifts left
in our rooms each night. If you would

Join us for an introduction to rallying designed to prepare drivers and navigators
for participation in Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) Road Rallies.
This is the type of rally run throughout PCA Zone 8 and at Porsche Parades.
We’ll begin with a classroom session for an hour or so
followed by a short practice rally.
We will end up at Max’s Restaurant in Santa Barbara for lunch and a critique.
Participants will need note-taking materials and a watch
that can be synchronized with a master timepiece.
All participants must pre-register - contact Joe Schneider at
autohaus@silcom.com
Event cost only $5.00 per person.

FOR ANOTHER GREAT SANTA BARBARA REGION AUTOCROSS EVENT!

27
August 10, 2011 - 6:30 p.m. – Santa Barbara Auto Group
SBR Board of Directors Meeting
Thank you Santa Barbara Auto Group and
Walt Branscome for hosting this month’s dinner
board meeting. Present were: Bill Sampson,
Dave Stone, Nick Liakas, Michael Brovsky, Steve
& Janet Kaller, Walt Branscome, Janice Herndon,
Joan & Chet Yabitsu, Don Kuckenbaker, Brian
Rubino, Jim Brown, Carolyn Ewbank, Martin
Keller, James Oldham, Mike Turek, Harriet &
James Edwards, and Nadine Tracy.
Secretary: The July minutes were
approved as submitted.
Vice President: No report.
Treasurer: Steve presented his Balance
Sheet, Profit and Loss YTD Comparison, and
Profit and Loss Previous Year Comparison. Discussion followed. Steve has set up a special
account to keep control of all contributions to
our charity that are made payable directly to
them. At the end of the year this account will be
closed but total funds raised for our 2011 charity
will include this amount.
Membership: During the month of July,
Janice reported that six new members joined
our region. At month’s end, membership stood
at 701.
Activities: Please review and sign up
for upcoming events: September 10th PreConcours Detail Clinic at Lavaggio, September
17th Camarillo Autocross, September 25th
“Rebel Without A Cause” Run, October 9th
Annual Concours d’Elegance, and October 29th
“Cones for Homes” Autocross in Camarillo.
Editor: Mike Pomerantz has merged his
Oxnard Sir Speedy franchise with the Camarillo
store. The Der Auspuff print job will also move
but Mike will continue to personally oversee
our magazine’s production as well as its bulk
mailing. Our excellent service should continue
uninterrupted with the September edition being
the first to be printed in the Camarillo facility.
Distribution: As a follow-up to last
month’s distribution discussion, Chet found out
that the $953.03 cash balance left in the SBR
Permit #238 account is refundable but the $185
Permit Renewal Fee paid on March 16, 2011 is
not. A motion was made and passed to allow
Chet to fill out the necessary refund paperwork. Mailing costs for the Der Auspuff may increase
due to post office changes in processing facility
locations. The board will address this matter
and future distribution options. 753 copies of
the August issue were mailed out of the Oxnard
Post Office for a postage cost of $321.31.
Advertising: Don advised the board of
advertising changes as well as revenues billed
and paid. Discussion followed.
Goodie Store: Brian reported sales as
follows: July Autocross $647.50 with a profit
of $223.31, August Camarillo breakfast $152.00
with a profit of $39.05. The Goodie Store was
reimbursed $248.27 for expenses.
Insurance: Jim has filed all certificates
through the end of the year.
Concours: Carolyn reported that all
details of the Concours are moving along
smoothly. Trophies, judge’s gifts and dash
plaques are being purchased. The Detail Clinic
on September 10th is starting to fill up.
Autocross: The July 31st autocross
was a great success with 63 drivers and lots of
happy spectators. Thank you Santa Barbara
Auto Group for being a sponsor for this event
and, we look forward to working with you
on future autocross events in Santa Barbara. Dan will be inventorying the trailer. Four fire
extinguishers need to be recharged and all will
need to be checked before the 2012 season. Dan
will forward receipts for these expenses. He is
confident that both the September and October
events will be filled to capacity and will be very
successful. Volunteers are needed for both
autocross events.
Archives: No report.
Webmaster: It was another active
month for the Santa Barbara region, resulting
in a number of updates to the PCASB website.
The Other Events Calendar added activities
including the “Day Away From Work” at Streets
of Willow and the “Rennsport Reunion IV”. Finally, the July 31 Autocross results were added
to the Event Results. Also, thanks to those
who have added images to our Flickr PCASB
Group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/pcasb,
we have a regularly changing supply of new
images on our website. If you’re an existing
Flickr user, images submitted to that group will
“auto-magically” appear on our PCASB.org
website. Please contact Randy Fishwick with
any questions.
Safety: Mike worked with the Autocross
committee to establish an updated first aid kit
for SBR events. Mike bought the kit and was
reimbursed.
P.M.S.: The group will be having a boating
event on September 10th and encourages signups.
28 September 2011 • Santa Barbara Region • Porsche Club of America • www.pcasb.org
R.U.F.: The July tour of Montecito with
bring-your-picnic lunch was attended by 16
R.U.F.ians. The tour concluded with a visit to
the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum’s
Butterfly exhibit. The August 25th event will
be of Houweling’s Tomato farming operation
in Oxnard, which will be followed by lunch at
Los Arroyos Mexican Cuisine at the Camarillo
Outlets.
Past President: No report.
President: The Chili Cook-Off and the
Santa Barbara Autocross were outstanding
events this month. Many thanks to all who
put these events together and special thanks
to board members Dan, Martin, Doreen, Ted,
Janice, Dave, Dick, Karen, Mike T., Brian, Linda,
and Michael B. & Beverly who all put in long
hours at the autocross. Santa Barbara Porsche
stepped up big time to help. The Porsche driver,
John Lewis, was a smash hit also. Bill sent
thank yous to PCNA, SBAG, and Schneider
Autohaus. Bill met with Des Warren of DSR
Audio and the bigger sound system is now ours. This will greatly improve how we conduct that
meeting. Please urge your fellow members to
hold their conversations for the few minutes the
meeting lasts. The Zone 8 Concours School was
a success thanks to Carolyn and Dick. It was
well attended both from within our region and
the Zone. Thank you Mike Turek for attending
the autocross as the Safety Chair. His presence
will improve our readiness for any problems
that might arise. Bill is looking forward to the
October 29th autocross that will benefit our
charity.
Old Business: Der Auspuff future
distribution plans were discussed. Martin said
that the EZ Up tent has been purchased for
future club events. A list of prospective officers
and directors was presented by the Nominating
Committee. A 50th Anniversary Planning
Committee has been created and members
named.
New Business: Printing costs for the Der
Auspuff were discussed. The September board
meeting will be held at Carrow’s in Oxnard and
the October meeting will be held at Lavaggio in
Agoura Hills.
Meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.

where Kent Bodin has organized a fun ceremony to honor the late actor. After that, we’ll continue our drive to the Eberle Winery in Paso Robles. At the winery we’ll enjoy a delightful BBQ
lunch with wine tasting on the patio. After lunch, we’ll tour the winery before our drive back
home. If you’d like to stay overnight, we have a group rate of $129 at the Courtyard by Marriott
in Paso Robles, where there will be free, reserved parking for your car.
The cost of this entire event - lunch, wine tasting, winery tour, and activity fee - is only $40.
Please sign up no later than Sunday, September 18. No refunds for cancellations after 9/18/11.
R.S.V.P. to Doreen Pankow at dpankow@sbcglobal.net (805) 527-8280.
Make your check for $40 per person payable to PCA/SBR and
mail to Doreen Pankow, 2251 Brownstone Creek Avenue

Members Very Thankful For The Chance To Inspect Their Porsches
SBR Appreciation Day At Rusnak
F
or the second year in a row, Rusnak Porsche Westlake hosted
the members of the Santa Barbara Region for a service open
house at the dealership. By appointment, individuals were
able to meet one-on-one with a service professional, have their
cars put up on a lift, and stand by the technician as a front-to-back
inspection took place. To say that members were pleased by this
complimentary benefit would
be an understatement.
In addition to the free
inspections, General Manager
Keith Goldberg and Service
Manager
Sam
Abergel
provided
refreshments
and beverages, substantial
discounts on parts and
accessories, and the bonus of
free car washes following the
inspections.
A really useful event that
we hope our friends at Rusnak
will make into a tradition. =

very welcomed, indeed.
New transfer member Lloyd Loomis of Westlake Village (left)
listens and observes as Rusnak Service Tech Alex Beas points out
a small drip on the transmission of Lloyd’s 2006 C4S. Encounters
like this were repeated scores of times during the day, as many
SBR folks took advantage of Rusnak’s free inspection offer.
