We conclude the previous year’s business with the annual general meeting, and at the same time are in the process of extensive planning of another year’s worth of activities. These services, primarily used by Sask Sport’s Provincial Sport Governing Bodies and Sport Districts, the Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan, and the two universities, range from Sport Nutrition Sessions to Sport Taping Workshops. On that note, I would like to encourage all PSGB’s to contact our staff to develop an overall sport medicine and science plan. Each of you has access to ‘free’ service and programming hours/money as well as our expert consultants to assist and guide you when using our services. Remember, we are here to serve you! One of the many highlights of 2014 was the Councils contribution to the 2014 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) that was hosted in Regina. SASM member Dr. Marty Heroux was the Chief Medical Officer for the Games and staff member Scott Julé served as a consultant and project manager for the Medical Division of the Games. Lisa Hoffart, Staff Mental Trainer was available to provide mental training services, and Heather Hynes, Staff Nutritionist provided nutrition services. In addition, numerous other members and consultants provided countless hours of volunteer time as part of the host medical committee. The Council also provided medical equipment and supplies for the successful event. The Council once again provided sport medicine and science services to Saskatchewan athletes, coaches, and training group who are registered with the Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan (CSCS) in 2014. Many of these athletes and coaches are members of Canada’s national, international and Olympic teams. Council Staff also provided administrative support to the Centre by assisting with the athlete intake interview process, facilitating athlete advisory meetings and workshops, administering the medical treatment reimbursement program, Pfizer product distribution, and participation in Centre staff and management committee meetings. Our partnership with the CSCS has proven very beneficial to the Council, our members, and our dedicated consultants. To ensure we are providing and enabling our members and consultants with the ability to upgrade their knowledge and expertise, the Council initiated the process of establishing a Professional Development Committee. Initial steps have already occurred (one-on-one meetings were held with medicine and science provider groups) and once established, this committee will provide direction and policy for the Council in the area of professional development. On the topic of professional development, it is very much worth noting that we hosted a hugely successful sport medicine symposium in the spring of 2014 that saw 116 paid registrants attend. Many said it was the best ‘line-up’ of speakers at a sport medicine conference in Saskatchewan they had ever been at. 2015 will see the Council host FMS Level 1 & 2 courses on May 22 – 24 in Regina. These courses are an excellent learning opportunity for both our sport science and medicine consultants. Our Event Coverage Program was extremely busy in 2014, as we received requests to provide medical personnel at 20 events throughout the year. We enhanced our Event Coverage Program by applying for and receiving a grant of $4,300.00 from the 1989 Jeux Canada Games Foundation Inc. to purchase automated external defibrillators (AED’s) for use by our medical personnel who provide event medical coverage. As an organization, the Council would like to acknowledge members AJ Tabin and Nicole Renneberg, as well as Staff member Lisa Hoffart. All three represented Saskatchewan at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George in February. AJ was the Medical Liaison for Team Saskatchewan. Lisa was the Science Liaison. Nicole was a sponsored core medical therapist dedicated to hockey and worked with both the men’s and women’s Saskatchewan teams. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Members, Board, Executive, Committee’s, Consultants, and Staff for all your hard work and dedication to the athletes and coaches of Saskatchewan in 2014 and look forward to your continued involvement in 2015. It is because of you we have an organization that is one of the leading sport medicine and science service providers in Canada. Sincerely, Lisa Swallow, President Exercise/Rehabilitation Supplies and Equipment Injury Prevention & Care Equipment Rental 2 Concussion Management Plan. Do You Have One? The goal of an effective Concussion Management Plan is to protect athletes and return them safely to learning and athletics. Coaches, parents, athletes, educators and officials all have an important role to play in concussion prevention and management. A Concussion Management Plan will promote concussion awareness, teach safe techniques, ensure proper and well maintained equipment, teach respect for opponents and self, and promote good officiating. All stakeholders need access to accurate and current concussion information. The SMSCS is your resource in developing a Concussion Management Plan. On our website, information and resources are presented for use in the development of your Plan. Topics include concussion education, prevention, management, return to play, and return to learn. The content is targeted to athletes, parents, coaches, educators and officials. We also have an easy-to-use TEMPLATE that can be used to develop your Concussion Management Plan All PSGB’s have access to free service and programming hours from the SMSCS. We strongly encourage all PSGB’s to use one or two of these hours to have your Plan reviewed and evaluated by one of our sport medicine professionals. Mark started with the Council back in 1990 and has guided the organization from a single staff organization offering a few programs and services to what is now five full-time staff offering services in 15 programming areas. It has been because of Mark’s tireless effort that the SMSCS is regarded as one of the premier provincial organizations within the SaskSport Inc system. In a previous newsletter we noted that staff member Travis Laycock had saved the lives of two people by rescuing them after they lost control of their car and went onto a slough. On April 21, Travis will receive the Saskatchewan Premier’s Commendation Award at the Legislature Building for his unselfish and heroic efforts. Congratulations Travis, and obviously most deserving! The SMSCS would like to acknowledges and sincerely thank the 1989 Jeux Canada Games Foundation for granting the Council $4,300 for the purchase of two Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s). The purchase of the AED’s will enhance the Council’s ability to ensure a safe environment and first-rate injury care at amateur sporting events that the Council is providing the medical/1st aid coverage at. Revised Saskatchewan Child Abuse Protocol The Saskatchewan Child Abuse Protocol demonstrates a commitment by the Government of Saskatchewan to ensure that all efforts to protect children from abuse and neglect are integrated, effective and sensitive to the needs of children. To achieve this goal, all police, professionals and organizations are being asked to collaborate with the Government of Saskatchewan in an effort to prevent, detect, report, investigate and prosecute cases of child abuse and support children who have been abused. As agencies and organizations involved in the delivery of sport activities, the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport has asked Sask Sport to provide this information to the many community groups in our network who are working with children. Although there will be many people in our sport community who are familiar with, or who already using, programs that build awareness and resources to help keep kids safe, such as RespectED and Respect in Sport, we ask that you pass along this information to reinforce the protocol to ensure that instructors, coaches and leaders in our communities are aware of their “duty to report” suspicions of child abuse. The Child and Family Services Act (Section 12, Subsection 1 and 4) states that every person who has reasonable suspicion to believe that a child may be in need of protection shall report the information to a child protection worker, Ministry of Social Services, First Nations Child and Family Services Agency or Police officer. Visit the Saskatchewan Social Services website for more information regarding the Saskatchewan Child Abuse Protocol or Child Protection Services. Thank you for your attention to this request and let’s all do our part to help protect our Saskatchewan children. Is there something I should be doing so I don’t get so nervous? (from a 16 year old volleyball player) – “What should I be eating or drinking right after a workout, practice, or a game? One of the things I’ve heard is that I should drink chocolate milk? Is this true? “ Answer provided by Lisa Hoffart, M.A., B.Kin.: When you start to feel nervous, one of the first things that you can do is to take a deep breath. This helps to circulate oxygen to your body and helps you to relax. Often when people get nervous their movements speed up, so consciously slowing yourself down could be another way to ensure that you stick to your pre-shot routine. A pre-shot routine is something that you do every time before you shoot a free throw. By including the same movements and thoughts, the routine helps to make you feel prepared and relaxed. Some examples of things that could be included might be taking a deep breath, bouncing the ball three times, looking at the basket and visualizing the shot going into the basket, exhaling, and then taking your shot. The key is to establish your pre-shot routine in practice so that you feel comfortable using it during a competition. The pre-shot routine can also help you to focus on the task and to block out external distractions. These steps are things that can be implemented as a way to deal with nervousness. Answer provided by Alison Friesen, RD cand: • Recovery snacks or meals after a workout, practice or a game are dependent on the intensity and duration of the exercise session and when the next workout, practice or game will be. Eating within 15-30 minutes of exercising is key to replacing muscle glycogen stores (what our body uses first for energy when exercising) and preventing protein and muscle breakdown. A large meal should then be consumed within 2 hours of exercising. • The composition of the recovery snack or meal needs to contain carbohydrate to replace muscle glycogen and protein to support muscle protein repair. The goal is 1-1.2g/kg CHO and 0.2-0.4g/kg protein. Chocolate milk is a great recovery food because it contains 27g carbohydrate and 8 g protein per cup.
