Los Angeles and has a population of more than 33,000.
The city is nestled in the green foothills of the majestic
San Gabriel Mountains. La Verne is a vibrant family
community that cherishes both its history and its vision
of the future. The tree-lined streets and well-kept homes

Favorite place on campus: The Tents. Much of my time has
been spent here and some of my favorite moments have
happened here as well.
Favorite professor: Greg Cummings. He has become a close
friend who has helped me at the University of La Verne.
Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college? For its
community atmosphere, the location, and the ability to
continue to play sports.
What do you like about La Verne’s location? It is so close to
everything. Angels Stadium, the beach, the mountains, and
everything else is no more than an hour drive.
How has La Verne prepared you to go into the working world or
graduate school? La Verne has given me the opportunity to
learn in the classroom, through internships and athletics. They
have not only given me practical knowledge, but they have also
taught me many life lessons that make me who I am today.
What do you do off campus, during the weekends, when you
have free time? I enjoy watching the many different
professional sports teams in the area and also going to the
beach. Free time is spent working or hanging out with friends.
University of La Verne is minutes away from Los Angeles, Pasadena,
and Orange County. A short excursion from La Verne leads to worldclass surfing beaches, challenging ski slopes, desert recreation areas,
and popular rock climbing spots. In addition, there are numerous
hiking and bike trails. If the outdoors isn’t for you, Southern California
has a variety of other choices for fun and entertainment – from
amusement parks and sports venues, to renowned
museums, theaters, and shopping centers.

La Verne for college? I chose
La Verne because of the size,
and all the opportunities
students have to get
involved.
Favorite place on campus: The music library – as a freshman
I would go hang out there to pass the time. My friends
introduced me to this small, great, welcoming hidden treasure
that I have always gone back to.
What do you like about La Verne’s location?
La Verne’s location is great. To me it’s all about access;
the freeways to get everywhere in Southern California are
convenient – at most three minutes from campus.
Favorite professor: Dr. Felicia Beardsley did not become my
advisor until the beginning of my third year, however, I had
classes with her before; she was always just so encouraging
and helpful. She sat down with me to figure out my schedule
up to the day I graduate! She is really a treasure to the
University that not enough students get to discover.
What do you do off campus, during the weekends, when you
have free time? I'm pretty involved so my weekends are
usually spent on RA duty and hanging out with my sorority
sisters. Whenever I get time to myself, I like to spend it with
my friends and do random things like catching up on TV,
visiting family, dancing, and going out to eat.

6 History and Demographics
The University can trace its beginning to 1891 when members of the Church of the Brethren, moving west to California,
founded Lordsburg College. When the surrounding agricultural community of Lordsburg was renamed to La Verne in 1917,
the institution followed suit and La Verne College was established. Recognized as an outstanding provider of teacher education,
the college saw its campus, curriculum and student body grow to meet the expanding higher educational needs of the region.
While in time the Board of Trustees became independent of church governance, the college never lost its commitment to service
or its dedication to sound, people-centered, values-oriented education. Accredited by the Western College Association in 1955,
the college continued to expand, awarding its first master's degree in 1965 and conferring its first doctorate in 1979.

Favorite professor: Janat Yousof. I met her through a management
class and ever since then I've kept in contact with her. She's an
amazing person and she is always open to helping me out. It’s
amazing how you can create such a relationship with a professor.
She's always available and I love it!
Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college? Being from Hawaii,
I wanted to experience something new in California. At the same
time I didn't want to be thrown into an area that would be difficult
to adjust to. I chose La Verne
due to the small community and
outstanding opportunities to learn.
Having no family in California and
still staying in La Verne for four
years proves I made the right choice.

What do you like about La Verne’s location? It's definitely in a
location that’s very convenient to other major cities. Whether it's
Los Angeles or Riverside, you're looking at a fairly easy drive. What
is also great is being able to come to a location that's calm, clean
and quiet. After a long night in the city or a long day at work, it’s
nice to come to a place that’s easy to rest!
What do you do off campus, during the weekends, when you have free
time? In my spare time I work at the Apple Store in Victoria Gardens. I
love shopping, whether it’s at a thrift store or a name brand store. I
usually find time for friends to just hang out and create lasting memories!

The College of Arts and Sciences engages students with an
innovative and challenging education in the traditional disciplines
of liberal arts and sciences. Our dedicated faculty encourage
students to choose a course of study most meaningful to them,
while providing additional learning experiences beyond the
classroom: every program has a hands-on or research component
in the form of laboratory experience, field studies, international
travel, professional internships, or volunteer service activities.

Favorite professor: Jerome Garcia, because his classes prepare us
for graduate school and challenge me to excel to the best of my

Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college? I wanted to go
to La Verne because of how close the students and faculty are
with one another. I wanted to attend a great academic school
as well as develop long lasting relationships in a small setting.
What do you like about La Verne’s location? I like how everything
is within walking distance. It makes the school very accessible.
How has La Verne prepared you to go into the working world or
graduate school? It has given me the opportunity to surround
myself with great mentors to guide me in whatever direction I
decide to choose.
What do you do off campus, during the weekends, when
you have free time? When I'm not playing baseball, I like to
spend time with my teammates, play Guitar Hero, and attend
sporting events.

4The University of La Verne Debate Team is ranked in the top 20 of the World Universities Debating Championship, the world's
largest debating tournament with more than four hundred members. La Verne students participate in tournaments across the
globe, and the team regularly makes the national finals. In 2007, the team was the national champions and in 2009, it had
three of its teams ranked in the top 32 of the nation.
4Dr. Paul Alvarez, Professor of Movement and Sports Science and Clinical Supervisor for the Athletic Training Education
Program, was selected as an athletic trainer for Team USA at the World University Games. Held in 2009 in Belgrade, Serbia,
he provided medical services for athletes in nine sporting events.
4The United States Department of Education awarded the University of La Verne a highly competitive $3.58 million Title V
STEM Grant, to prepare and attract more students in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
4Drs. Glenn Gamst and Aghop Der-Karabetian, both psychology professors at La Verne, designed a groundbreaking training
program for mental health professionals focusing on appropriate multicultural delivery. Titled the California Brief
Multicultural Competence Scale (CBMCS) Multicultural Training Program, it is the result of 10 years of research and
evaluation, and fills a critical need among mental health care professionals around the world.

Best memories teaching at La Verne: In one
of my classes I assigned homework to my
students that required them to go to the
campus library. Later, a young man came
into my office, crying. The student
explained to me that he was poor.
Devastated, he said he would be unable to
complete the assignment. He thought he
had to pay to use the University library. I
took him to the library and I explained to
him that it was free.

Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college? I have always heard
great things about La Verne. It is the only school that provided me
with the financial help I needed to further my education. In high
school I went above and beyond and all of my hard work was taken into
consideration at La Verne through scholarships, grants, and credits.
What do you like about La Verne’s location? La Verne’s small, close-knit
community allowed me to feel comfortable at all times. Everything one
could ever need is a short distance away.
What do you do off campus, during the weekends, when
you have free time? When I have free time I spend it with my family. As a
college student, education becomes priority so family time becomes even
more precious.

Why do you like teaching at La Verne? I think I derive my energy from other people. I
really enjoy people. That’s what I like about teaching; you learn from the people you teach.
What do you like most about the students? I love teaching college students, preparing
people who are going to be teachers. It’s fun. It’s hard work, but it’s fun. I think the joy
comes from knowing you’ve made a difference. Sometimes you don’t know that for a long
time. I still have students who reconnect with me and share their experiences and tell
me, ‘Oh, yeah, this really meant something to me. It was important.’

4The College works each year to bring the Institute for Early Childhood Education
Conference to the University of La Verne.
4Teacher Education, Child Development and the Reading Master’s programs team up to
hold the annual Family Literacy Conference. The event offers literacy activities for
families with children ranging from preschool to sixth grade.
4Montevue Elementary School in the Pomona Unified School District is working with 18
doctoral students to research students and chronicle the journey of change at the school.

students? I believe that the four pillars of the
College: caring, excellence, diversity, and leadership, are all qualities
present in La Verne students. It is our goal in the College to nurture these
qualities in ourselves and in our students so that we may all contribute
to the success of those who teach and work with children every day.
Accomplishments: I am currently working on a research project with
the Fairplex Child Development Center. This year-long project is
designed to decrease violence as it appears in its earliest stages in our
early childhood centers and in young children. Personally, I am proud
that my husband and three children have graduated from La Verne!
Best memories teaching at La Verne: In observing our child development
students at the Fairplex Child Development Center, I am able to see how
they take the knowledge they have learned in the classroom and apply
it to working with young children.

sexuality, identity and culture, as well as disabilities and
learning differences are explored throughout the
curriculum and are addressed through various colloquia.
You can attend a Social Justice Symposium presented by
the Coalition for Diversity or broaden your thinking by
attending a Hot Spots Series lecture offered through the
International Studies Institute. A stimulating series of
“brown bag” presentations and discussions on diversity
conducted by the Diversity Colloquia keeps diversity in the
forefront of our daily lives while informing and processing
the ramifications of both historical and current events.

Our First Generation Student Success Program lends support to
students who are the first in their families to attend college
and aspire to succeed. We provide leadership and practical
information on making access to higher education a reality
for families that have not previously had those opportunities.
We have built partnerships with faculty, staff, students and
community groups so that we may serve as primary advocates
to meet the needs of our diverse student population.
As an international student, how have you felt included in
the greater La Verne community? The intimate community
in addition to the International Student Organization has
made it easy for me to meet a lot of different people.
What has been the best part of your experience living at
La Verne? I have met a lot of international people whom
I have really bonded with due to the fact that we are far
away from our home country. I particularly loved our times
together during our “international meetings” as we call them!

What was your experience like adapting to the new
community from a different country? The first month living
in a different culture was difficult especially with adjusting
to the different food choices.
Besides the demographic make-up of the student body, diversity
is manifested in a variety of areas. For example, student clubs

Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college? I like
La Verne being a small city without the disadvantages of a
big city but still close to Los Angeles. It is close to different

freeways.
How has La Verne prepared you to go into the working world or
graduate school? Career Services provided me with a lot of information
in regards to finding a job.
What do you do off campus, during the weekends, when you have free
time? I often hang out with friends and go sightseeing together. Also,
I enjoy watching movies in my leisure time.

The University of La Verne provides a broad range of
programs and services to help you reach your academic
goals and enhance your personal, intellectual and
social development. From the moment you walk on
campus to after graduation, student support services
are always available to help with your needs.
The Academic Advising office helps you develop and
implement your educational goals. The office assigns
faculty advisors in your field of study, advises
undeclared majors and provides advising support.
The Campus Safety Department is a security force
that patrols campus seven days a week, 24 hours a
day. Campus Safety officers can be contacted from
any campus phone by simply picking up the receiver
and pressing “Campus Safety.”
Career Services provides you with resources and
programs to help you in your professional growth.
Services available include assessment tests, career
counseling, resume writing,
interview preparation, mock
interviewing, as well as job
and internship listings.

The computer labs, accessible across campus, are
equipped with Windows and/or Macintosh systems
and a variety of related equipment. For your
convenience, there are nine computer labs on campus
with more than 200 computers available. The main
labs are typically open from early in the morning
until late at night to meet your needs.
The Counseling Center provides a wide range of
counseling services designed to assist you to achieve
your full human potential. Individual and group
counseling sessions are available at no cost to you.
The Elvin and Betty Wilson Library, the University’s
central library, owns more than 250,000 physical volumes,
34,000 journals (print and electronic), 25,000 electronic
books, and more than 2,700 audio-visual items. The
library provides access to an online catalog (LEOpac) and
60 plus electronic databases for scholarly research. The
53,000-square-foot, four-level, Wilson Library provides
group study rooms, ample individual study spaces, more
than 40 computer terminals, and a wireless network.
Research assistance is available to you in person, via
telephone, online chat, or e-mail. Access to a number
of other libraries and materials is also possible.

Study Abroad Center
(ISAC) provides

international students.
The staff is equipped to answer questions related
to immigration, American culture and living in the
United States. ISAC also coordinates the many study

The Learning Enhancement Center (LEC) offers

Is living on campus mandatory during
your freshman year? No, it’s not mandatory to live on campus your freshman
year, however, 60% of first-year students
do. You can also bring your car on campus
– no restrictions!
Can I live with my friends? Yes, you can
request to live with friends on campus. Each student
must write the requested student’s name on his/her
application.
Am I able to live on campus during vacation? Yes,
students can live on campus both during spring break
and January interterm, however, housing is not available
during the summer.
Are there meal plans available? Yes, meal plans for
Davenport and the new café at the Campus Center are
mandatory for those living on campus. There are four
options to choose from: 10, 12, 14, or 19 meals per week.
Are there cooking facilities available if I live on campus?
Yes, each of the housing facilities is supplied with a
kitchen. Stu-Han and Brandt Hall have a main cooking
area, while The Oaks has a kitchen on each floor for
community use.

What do you like about La Verne’s location? It is 30 minutes
away from practically everything which is good for going out
on the weekends.
How has La Verne prepared you to go into the working world or
graduate school? La Verne has helped prepare me a lot for the
real world. I have been able to work with people of different
ethnic backgrounds, I am able to analyze things, and I have
more of an open mind.
What do you do off campus, during the weekends, when you
have free time? When I have free time I love going to the beach,
Hollywood and whatever else I can do that’s pretty cheap.

campus is F-Middle in the Oaks Apartments. The majority
of my friends live there and I am the happiest when I'm

Favorite professor: Mike Laponis, who is also my academic
advisor, knows so much about what he teaches. He is friendly
and approachable and he is someone who I can talk to as a
friend but still look up to and respect.
Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college? I chose to
go to La Verne because the people here are simply the
friendliest and warmest people I have ever met. As soon
as I stepped on this campus, it felt like home. Everywhere
I go, I see a friendly face.
What do you like about La Verne’s location? I like the
small town that the campus is in. It's a safe environment
and there are so many places to go within walking
distance. And during spring and summer, the La Verne
Street Fair is always a nice place to hang out.

Favorite place on campus: The ASULV Office. Everyone is like a giant family. What better
place to accomplish work and to further advance the student body, than a place that is
full of life and positive energy?
Favorite Professor: Steve Slakey. He is a genuine man who really strives to make sure
students learn the material and get the most out of his class. His class and field trip to
Los Angeles are experiences I will not forget.
Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college? I chose La Verne because of its small
class size and its reputation for having personal relationships with each student. I've
learned a lot of life lessons and wouldn't change my experience for the world.
What do you like about La Verne’s location? La Verne is close to everything yet far enough
from it all. Many suburban colleges offer students the close proximity to the beaches,
mountains, city and deserts that Southern California has to offer. But because of the
atmosphere at La Verne, it truly feels like what a college campus is supposed to feel like:
a self-supporting community that can really be separated from the outside world.
What do you do off campus, during the weekends, when you have free time? When I am
not attending Campus Activities Board or Resident Hall Association events, I usually
find myself relaxing with my roommate and our friends in the residence halls or going

Athletics
Each year at the University of La Verne,
more than 400 student athletes discover the
true meaning of teamwork by making significant contributions
to a strong tradition of athletics. Compete in one of nine men’s
or nine women’s NCAA Division III athletic teams and you could
be playing in front of a packed crowd at Ben Hines Field, the Sports
Science and Athletics Pavilion or the La Verne Aquatic Center.
You don’t have to sport a Leo’s jersey to get involved with
athletics on La Verne’s campus: paint yourself orange and green
and cheer on the Leopards as they compete against our rivals in
the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
or form an intramural team with friends from your residence hall.

Favorite place on campus: “The Tents” is the
place where my fondest memories took place
these past four years from volleyball to basketball games to intramurals.
Favorite professor: Jimmy Paschal, because he
has so much history with the University of La
Verne. He was the tennis coach for many years
as well as the volleyball coach; he led one of
La Verne's National Championship volleyball
teams. He is very knowledgeable and he has a
story to back up anything that he is teaching
which makes his classes very enjoyable.
Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college?
Upon graduating from high school, I researched
a lot of colleges and universities and La Verne
stuck out due to its stellar academic history as
well as its successful volleyball program.

I like that it is within driving distance for me
to travel home on weekends and is in close
proximity to Orange and L.A. counties. Also, it
sits in a quiet community which allows me to
complete my academic studies at the highest

football field is the place where I
can leave my stress, problems, or anything
that bothers me. Whether it be during a practice or a game,
football helps level out my emotions especially if I am unable to
talk to my friends about them.
Favorite professor: Marilyn Oliver has not only been my teacher,
but she is also my academic advisor. With her advice and
teaching, I have been on the right path towards getting my
diploma. As my advisor, I know that’s what she’s supposed to
do but I feel no one else would make it as fun or easy as her.
Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college? It has a great
program for my major. I was originally supposed to attend
college in Atlanta but I realized that my mom would not be able
to see me play football all the time.

La Verne’s study abroad program. You can study abroad for a few weeks during
January interterm or up to an entire academic year. Programs are available for

Joseph Paul Kilanski, or PJ
Butta as he is better known to
his listeners from Hot 92.3 for
the past 15 years, credits much
of his success to his teachers
and contacts he made while an undergraduate in the highly
respected communications program at the University of La Verne.

“The great thing about La Verne’s communications program is that
they encourage and allow you to be involved with the program from
day one,” said Kilanksi.
Kilanski hit the ground running while at La Verne as a broadcasting
student. In addition to working at KULV (now LeoFM), attending
class, and interning at what was then known as 92.3 The Beat, he
was able to pull an all-night radio show gig he landed at 104.7
KCAQ in Oxnard. Eventually all of his hard work paid off. Less than
a year later, during his senior year at La Verne, Kilanski became the
youngest on-air talent in Los Angeles at the age of 22.
Kilanski recently joined forces with the Avila Brothers who have
produced for such artists as Usher, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and
Aretha Franklin. Together, Kilanski and the Avila Brothers recently
produced their first record together on ABX Records entitled The
Mood: Soundsational.
Today, Kilanski stays actively involved in the radio broadcasting
industry. He hosts a Sunday show for Hot 92.3, teaches broadcasting
classes and hosts a top Hip-Hop and R&B show for World Chart online
– a popular radio station heard around the world.
“If I hadn’t gone to La Verne, I would never be where I am today,”
Kilanski said.

Wendy Lau, a senior associate for the legal firm of Wood,
Smith, Henning & Berman LLP, began her college career at a
very large university. She realized that attending a large
school was not for her. When she transferred to La Verne, she
quickly found what she was looking for.
“Many of my lasting friendships and relationships to this day
are with people I went to La Verne with,” said Lau. “The
professors are not only your professors, but are lifelong friends.”
After graduating from La Verne, Lau pursued her law degree
at Pepperdine University where she graduated cum laude.
She continues to be an active member within the campus
community by serving as a member of the Alumni Governing
Board of Directors, and Chapter Greek Advisor for Phi Sigma
Sigma Sorority, where she was recently honored as Greek
Advisor of the year. In addition, Lau also teaches as an
adjunct professor for the Honors Program at La Verne.
“Some of my best years in higher education occurred while
at La Verne,” said Lau.

Favorite place on campus:
Miller Hall, the oldest building on
campus, has so much history and it is right in the middle of
the University. The staff is extremely friendly and I am always
surrounded by friends whenever I am in the building.
Favorite professor: Dr. Stephen Sayles, my history professor, is
thought-provoking and has the ability to inspire students to go
beyond class assignments and seek a further understanding of
history and its global impact. Class sessions are intense, but Dr.
Sayles' lectures are interesting, easy to comprehend and fun to learn.
Why did you choose to go to La Verne for college? La Verne has a
very small town feel to it which I love. Faculty, students and
staff alike are all extremely friendly and welcoming. This
university feels like a family that is ready to help and support
me all throughout my college education.
What do you like about La Verne’s location? It's amazing how
central La Verne is to so many locations. Nowhere else but in
Southern California can you be at the mountains one hour and
only a short drive later, at the beach. There is no place like it.
What do you do off campus, during the weekends, when you have
free time? I play tennis with my friends and hang out with them.
I also volunteer in the drama department at my old high school.

To apply for admission to the University, the following documents must be submitted to the Office of Admission.

2. Application Fee
Please submit your non-refundable $50 application
fee. You can either write a check or money order
payable to University of La Verne or pay online
through the Common Application Web site.
3. Personal Statement
Write an essay of 250 words or more on one of six
topics listed in the Common Application. This essay
will assist us in getting to know you better as an
applicant.
4. Official Transcripts
4 Freshmen: You must request your high school
transcripts and all college work attempted be sent
directly to the Office of Admission.
4 Transfers (28 or more semester hours completed at
the college level): You must request official college
transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
be sent directly to the Office of Admission.
5. SAT I or ACT Scores
You must have an official SAT I or ACT score report
sent from the appropriate testing agency or a score
reported on the official transcript. Transfer students
with at least 28 semester hours of college credit need
not submit test scores.
