Number 27 – March 2003 English Edition Where there’s a Nottwil, there’s a way Engadin Card – jack of all trades in a snow-clad paradise Sliding doors in glacier grotto Convenience merely a question of affluence? People generally notice convenience as such when it is new. They quickly get used to it and then soon take it for granted. Only 20 years ago, it was normal to carry a whole bunch of keys around, but today, thanks to transponder technology, one single medium can do the same job as numerous keys. Doors equipped only with a locking mechanism are impractical. Those that open automatically are much more comfortable. Configured with the appropriate modules, automatic doors can securely seal off entrances and will open only to authorized persons. Jean-François Wulpillier If we look at these examples from the security point of view, the perspective changes, because these products were developed mainly to address the need for security. But since security only meets with broad acceptance if it is combined with an adequate degree of comfort, engineers and designers place considerable emphasis on convenience. Since many Kaba products and applications on offer are remarkably convenient, it is easy to forget that their main purpose is to ensure security. Several of the articles in this issue of Security Update will show you further examples of how security and convenience harmonize in other Kaba applications. J.-F. J.-F. Founded and directed by Guido A. Zäch, MD, the largest acute and special clinic of its kind in Europe provides comprehensive medical and therapeutic care under one roof. Comprehensive care. Working hand in hand with rescue personnel The key causes of paraplegia are traffic, work, and sports accidents involving spinal cord and marrow injuries. Such traumatic seconds can decisively change the life of an individual. The fate of those who fall victim to such accidents depends significantly on how and how fast they are rescued, transported, and treated. “We place great emphasis on training for paramedics and rescue personnel,” says senior physician Dr. Dieter Michel. “This covers correct positioning in cases of suspected spinal cord injury, the administration of urgently needed medication, and preparations for surgery which must take place within 6 hours of the accident.” Heinz Frei moving along a handicapped accessible passage. 4 Paraplegia remains incurable “While the number of accidentrelated paraplegia cases is relatively stable, we are seeing a rise in the number of illness-related cases, for instance those triggered by infections after tick bites (borreliosis, FSME), multiple sclerosis, or HIV infections. Although there has been an overall improvement in the availability of therapeutic options since the end of World War II, paraplegia is still considered to be incurable today,” Dr. Michel adds. Progress in clinical research gives rise to hope Nonetheless, research in the field of paraplegia justifies optimism: Many paraplegics used to die due to infections of the urinary tract but today, they can be successfully treated with antibiotics. The inhouse research institute at the Swiss Paraplegic Center in Nottwil is a source of specialized know-how and experience. Its bundled competence is systematically focused on a sustainable improvement of the quality of life of paraplegics. The center pursues three highly interesting approaches: The regeneration of the damaged central nervous system (CNS) to facilitate the reunion of severed structures, or the transplantation of healthy nervous tissue into the damaged area. In embryonic stem cell research, the aim is to inject socalled pluripotent cells into the damaged area where they may develop into nerve cells and restitute neuronal function. Superior care and the architecture to match it. Comprehensive care Sir Ludwig Guttmann, a German physician and pioneer in the field of paraplegia who emigrated to England, introduced the concept of comprehensive care soon after World War II. The Swiss Paraplegic Center in Nottwil represents the systematic implementation of this concept. After 5 to 7 months of intensive therapy, patients are comprehensively prepared for their future life in a wheelchair. This also includes occupational rehabilitation to give them the greatest possible degree of independence. In many cases, paraplegics have no option but to retrain for a new job. They are assisted by an in-house institute for vocational development. “With specially adapted equipment, even quadriplegics can operate a computer today and pursue even sophisticated professions such as CAD design,” Dr. Michel explains. A Nottwil, on trouve un autre chemin J.-F. Wulpillier talking to head physician Dr. D. Michel. Overcoming barriers with wheelchair sports Sports occupy a prominent position in customized rehabilitation programs. “Patients don’t just find out what they can’t do any longer, they primarily learn all the things they can do,” says Heinz Frei who has been paralyzed himself since 1978. The multiple winner of Paralympic medals, world champion, marathon winner, and head talent coach of the wheelchair sports division of the Swiss Paraplegics Association voices his conviction that “success in sports not only has a positive impact on the physical well-being and self-confidence of paraplegics but also makes a decisive contribution to the reintegration of wheelchair users in society.” 6 Three organizations – one performance concept The equal treatment of all patients, regardless of how they are insured or where they live, is one of the underlying tenets of the Swiss Paraplegic Center. “As a nonprofit organization and a non-governmental organization,” Dr. Michel emphasizes, “we reject the notion of ‘second-class medicine’.” With its 1.2 million sponsoring members, the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation helps fund the wheelchair-compatible remodeling of homes, absorbs uncovered treatment expenses, and subsidizes the purchase of vehicles and aids for handicapped persons with a total of CHF 15 million a year. Invaluable assistance is also provided by the Swiss Paraplegics Association (12,000 members in 27 wheelchair clubs) which offers services in the domains of vocational consulting, obstacle-free construction, social and legal counsel, culture and leisure, as well as sports promotion at all levels. These three organizations interact to deliver a chain of services that is unique in the world. Automatic doors add to quality of life “What paraplegics cannot delegate,” Dr. Michel points out, “is dealing with their disability. Contacts with nursing personnel, family members, and friends are extremely important.” The architecture of the Swiss Paraplegic Center in Nottwil was designed to The main hall is light and airy. create a platform for the exchange of views and direct contacts between wheelchair users and pedestrians. A spacious, lightflooded hall of encounter with an integrated restaurant creates a pleasant atmosphere for this purpose. The greatest degree of mobility for those affected is one of the declared objectives of the comprehensive care concept. Automatic doors make a contribution to freedom of movement in everyday situations – in Nottwil, they have long been standard amenities. For pedestrians, automatic doors are a welcome convenience; for wheelchair users, they are indispensable. info@kaba.com www.paranet.ch Kaba Gilgen automatic doors. Leading DIY and garden centre retailer B&Q, now in its 33rd year of trading, with a turnover of £ 3.2 billion, 33,000 employees and over 300 stores in the UK alone, chose Kaba Benzing for the implementation and installation of a time recording solution within its stores. B&Q were looking for a heavy duty time recording system that interfaced seamlessly into SAP HR, and which could help the company develop efficient processes to record the attendance of staff in the stores. The system also helps them develop the rules which govern how the time-keeping records are used to pay staff. The data is collected centrally and passed into the SAP time evaluation module, where the store managers can amend and confirm the time sheets prior to them being passed into the SAP payroll. Garry Farrow, SAP T&A Project Manager commented: “The B-Comm ERP for SAP system was selected for a number of reasons. Its immediate SAP integration was a far more cost effective option than installing a third party supplier and interfacing that into SAP. The almost ‘plug and play’ technology makes the system easy to configure. Also, as an SAP Certified Software Partner, Kaba Benzing could ensure that future developments would keep the system up to date. Kaba already has 700 installed customers in the SAP marketplace. In addition, we were looking for a complete support service which Kaba was able to provide, and all the cost elements – the clock, software and maintenance – were very competitive.” info@kbs.kaba.com 7 Expansion of the Toulouse subway Since its first line was inaugurated in 1993, SMAT (Société de Métro de l’Agglomération Toulousaine) has been transporting commuters and tourists in a safe, fully automatic subway system. Kaba Gilgen platform screen doors make a perceptible contribution to the system’s high safety standards. Toulouse, city of roses and capital of the Département Haute Garonne, is France’s fourth-largest city, after Paris, Marseilles, and Lyon. Today, over 750,000 people live in Greater Toulouse. With more than 100,000 students and three universities, it is also the second most important center of academic studies in France. Quality of life, hospitality, and a highly advanced and modern infrastructure make Toulouse a desirable place to live and work. In the interest of mobility, the city’s authorities decided as long ago as 1985 to build a two-line subway network. Line A, completed in 1993, is 10 km long and serves 15 stations with 30 platforms. It runs underground along virtually its entire length. Between 1991 and 1993, Kaba Gilgen equipped all stations with the newly developed PSD (platform screen door) systems which since then have been operating dependably day in, day out. Additionally, 14 new trainsets were put into service last year; they are equipped with Kaba automatic door systems. In response to increasing passenger frequency, the operator is now expanding Line A by three new stations. Slidingindoors glacier grotto Glaciologist Benedikt Schnyder operates his ice pavilion in Saas-Fee (Switzerland) in the permafrost zone at 3,500 meters (11,500 ft) above sea level. Benedikt Schnyder created the world’s largest glacier grotto twelve years ago. It lies ten meters beneath the snow-draped surface. A 70-meter long tunnel leads to the 5-meter high icy cavern which spans more than 5,000 square meters. Despite the fact that temperatures are always below zero, Kaba Gilgen sliding doors operate reliably in this environment, giving visitors access to the mysterious bowels of the Fee glacier which is thousands of years old. An eerie blue light surrounds visitors on three levels where myriads of colors depict the gentle transition from water to ice. Ice sculptors regularly create new niches in the frozen underworld of the glacier. Apart from permanent exhibits, chiseled figures, and aquarelles, this realm also includes an ice slide, an igloo, and a dinosaur cave to delight children. Inside the glacier, the rule is: “touching permitted.” Schnyder has never stopped expanding the grotto, because despite his respect for the glacier, he can’t get enough of this ancient icescape. Various sculptures were added just recently, as was a chapel in which wedding ceremonies can be held. And no matter how cold it gets on the outside, the temperature in the glacial cavern never drops below minus one degree centigrade. With an annual traffic volume of currently 10 million passengers, Hamburg airport is Germany’s seventh-largest. More than onethird of all passengers – about 10,700 – are routed through Terminal 4 every day. A distinction is made between travellers arriving from member states of the Schengen treaty and passengers from other countries. Airline passengers from the latter category first pass through customs and then through two one-way sensor interlocks positioned at the entrance to the baggage-claim area. Four identical interlocks also control the flow of passengers from Schengen States. The systems consist of Kaba Gilgen folding wing doors and two forward-area swing flaps. Security sensors integrated in the door systems prevent passengers from returning to the tarmac where they could possibly reboard an aircraft. The remodeling project of Terminal 4 at Hamburg airport was completed just in time for the summer holiday season 2002 kickoff. Six newly designed oneway security interlocks were installed to better accommodate the growing number of arriving passengers and at the same time to enhance security. The interlocks were modified to comply with the customer’s requirements. The guide element with a length of about four meters was designed as a fully enclosed passageway that is angled so that dangerous objects, including weapons, cannot be handed over or pitched through from the publicly accessible zone. Understandably, the security personnel would no longer want to do without this system. The operators of other international airports have meanwhile assessed the quality of the interlocks on site in Hamburg and intend to integrate identical ones at their own hubs in the near future. info@kgb.kaba.com 10 Time and attendance system creates transparency Helukabel designs, manufactures, and supplies cables, wires, and accessories for every industry and every application. The company delivers some 24,000 tons of product to about 15,000 customers worldwide each year. The customers served by Helukabel include the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, electrical supplies wholesalers, the construction industry, and various telecommunications companies. All proprietary products, such as control wiring, data and computer cables, as well as heat-resistant and halogen-free wires are manufactured at Helukabel’s Windsbach plant in Germany around the clock in three shifts. The company’s employees work on a flextime model. Thorsten Hasslauer who is in charge of human resources at Helukabel says: “It was too complicated to compute schedules for a workforce of 380 people, so we switched to an electronic system.” The traditional punch clock cards were relegated to history in early 2002, when employees began to log attendance with no-contact Legic badges or key fobs at Kaba Benzing Bedanet 9340 terminals. The new terminals also inform the employees about their current flextime balance, a very useful feature they didn’t have before and now highly appreciate. The transition to the new time and attendance and access control system took place without a hitch. The advantages for the customer also materialized quickly: “All manual interventions and therefore all error sources have been eliminated. The new system saves a lot of time,” Hasslauer notes. 11 Kaba part of “Big Bang” Kwikset, a member of the Black & Decker Hardware and Home Improvement Group, is the largest residential lock manufacturer in the world. In a relationship that spans over forty years Kaba Ilco in Rocky Mount (USA) makes tens of millions of key blanks a year for this OEM customer. Kaba participe au «Big Bang» In 2002, Kaba Ilco worked jointly with Kwikset on a new project called “Big Bang”, providing a contemporary new custom key design that follows in the tradition of the distinctive “K” key first introduced by the company in 1958. The three chain holes on the new key form a “K” for the Kwikset name, surrounded by an attractive crosshatch and block design. Part of the inspiration for the new key was a historical review of Kwikset’s products, including samples manufactured by Kaba Ilco from the 1950s onward. Kwikset’s “Big Bang” also introduced the UltraMax brand aimed at the growing do-it-yourself market, featuring new products, revised packaging and improved ease of installation. Kaba Ilco provides most of the key blanks for the UltraMax product line, including Grade 1 security deadbolts. Convenient access in Berlin With some 1,600 exhibitors from 55 countries, the International Green Week (IGW) 2003 in Berlin is a globally unique trade show focused on agriculture, nutrition, and horticulture. At the south main entrance, about half a million visitors passed through the new Kaba door systems to fan out to the 26 exhibition halls. Producers of foods and luxury consumables from all over the world appreciate the IGW as an ideal platform for cultivating their image, but also use the exhibition as a welcome test market. Fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, and dairy products figure prominently within the presentations. A vast lineup of wines, beers, and spirits, combined with international specialties, leaves nothing to be desired for gourmets. The trend towards ecological awareness is reflected, too: farms that produce organic foods are on the spot at the IGW, offering direct sales to the consumer. The new south main entrance at the exhibition hall. As early as mid-January, the landmark entrance building was literally overrun by a first wave of IGW visitors from all over the world. In just days, the multifunctional building had been outfitted with 24 points of sale, information desks, and registration counters as well as trade show shops and numerous bistros. Because these facilities are mobile, the free-span hall can also be used for product presentations, inaugural ceremonies, press conferences, or lectures. The new south main entrance hall, equipped with Kaba door systems, handled the flood of visitors with poise. The impressive semi-circular structure rises to an overall height of 21 meters and can be seen from afar. The core business of this group of companies includes components for drive trains and balancer shafts. Every year, it produces 6 million gear wheels, gear sets, and balancer shafts. With 600 employees, the group generates annual sales of about 75 million Euro. It exports 92 percent of its products to markets all over the world and serves major internationally known car makers such as Ford, General Motors, BMW, and Audi. To remain close to customers around the globe, MITEC Automotive AG implemented the SAP R3 Automotive System. This software supports responsive “just-in-time” deliveries to customers on a worldwide scale. In the domain of time and attendance as well as Enterprise Data Collection, says MITEC’s IT manager Manuel Häke, the company needed a proven standard solution with a certified SAP interface. “Kaba Benzing convinced us with the in-depth know-how it had acquired with 750 SAP installations. The company also promised fast implementation, which was another asset, since we needed the software and the new terminals within 4 weeks.” MITEC decided in favor of the B-COMM for R/3 ERP solution offered by Kaba Benzing. It handles data collection and smooth data transfer to the respective SAP HR and PP modules. Up to 400 orders are processed each week. “With this solution, we know where we stand, at all times,” explains Axel Stoffer, the Chief Financial Officer of MITEC Automotive AG, “and at the end of the day, we can see exactly how much an order cost us.” info@kbs.kaba.com 14 Environmentally friendly parking with Legic The Observatory occupies a prime position in Slough and is well used with over 40 retail units including Argos, Top Shop, Dolcis and Woolworths. The shopping centre has 840 parking spaces and movements can peak at 4000 plus vehicles per day. To help control this flow Cale BriParc installed a PKS 2000 Pay on Foot system. The PKS 2000 utilises smart card technology, which comes in the form of a sturdy standard-size ISO plastic card complete with an integrated Legic transponder chip that stores all information required for the parking operation. Contactless smart cards have an almost unlimited number of read/write cycles since no mechanical contact is made to the card. The useful life of the card is limited only by wear of the readable instructions printed on the card. This is generally in excess of five years and one of their key benefits is that they can be scanned remotely by proximity reading equipment. After the installation was com- Legic Identsystems, one of the world’s leading suppliers of secure platforms for smart cards, has supplied technology enabling licence partner Cale BriParc to install its parking system in Slough’s award winning Observatory Shopping Centre. Respect de l’environnement avec un parking Legic pleted, the shopping centre was presented with an Award for the Environment. The award was presented to the Observatory because the PKS 2000 operates a contactless smart card system that enables cards to be reused within the system many thousands of times. This eliminates the need for a continual supply of paper tickets and the associated environmental impact of the waste. It is estimated that the PKS 2000 system will save on the use of approximately one million tickets per year, with projected savings reaching in excess of £ 40,000 over five years. 16 Engadin jack Card of all trades in The Engadine is one of Switzerland’s most popular holiday destinations. No wonder: apart from majestic mountains and picturesque lakes, it offers countless sports and leisure activities. Just recently, the region was in the international limelight again when St. Moritz hosted the 2003 World Ski Championships. Photos: Max Weiss, St. Moritz, Keystone and ENGADINferien/Oberengadiner Bergbahnen a snow-clad paradise Last winter, the popular resort area in the canton of Graubünden expanded its lineup of amenities with an attractive innovation: the Engadin Card is a jack of all trades, serving as a regional credit card, ski lift, bus, and train ticket, hotel room key, and parking pass. For guests, this is an extra convenience and a time-saver. Ron Pal, CEO of AccessArena, summarizes the main advantages: “The card combines access and payment, so the user can proceed directly to the ski lift, for instance, without having to queue at the ticket counter first. Whether it is used to access a ski lift, to settle the lunch tab in a mountaintop lodge, or for shopping in a boutique, the Engadin Card incorporates all functions of a classic credit card and in many hotels has already replaced room keys. The Legic chip on the card can be loaded with credit and various access authorizations by telephone or via the Internet. For the vacationer, the Engadin Card provides a double benefit, because when it is “interfaced” with a major credit card, cardholders are entitled not only to the membership reward programs of their credit cards (such as bonus miles) but also to those of the Engadin Card itself. More than 100 partners, including many hotels and lift operators, sports gear shops, and the tourism boards of all resorts in the Engadine are already participating in the project and the lineup of services covered is growing steadily. info@kaba.com 17 ComIDshopping mall in new The term “Com-ID” describes a technology that uses one single medium to handle all identification and cash transfer functions. The latest shopping mall to be inaugurated in Innsbruck, Austria, taps into the benefits offered by this user-friendly, cost-effective system. In September 2002, a new mall opened on Maria-TheresienStrasse, Innsbruck’s prestigious downtown shopping mile with the world-famous panoramic view. Up to 40,000 visitors are welcomed daily in this trendy venue with glass-roofed arcades that cover an area of more than 10,000 square meters and accommodate an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and service providers. A brandnew hotel with convention facilities, underground parking for 320 cars, and 9,000 square meters of office space add to the appeal of this multifunctional commercial center and innovative landmark in the heart of Innsbruck. Kaba delivered and installed a Kaba elolegic masterkey system to address the operator’s need: “one medium for everything”. Forwardlooking Com-ID (Common Media Identification) is guaranteed at all levels with some 780 mechanical Quattro S and 530 Elolegic cylinders as well as 1,020 Legic keys. Yet again, Legic is the innovative technology that merges access control, time and attendance management, PC log-in, and vending machine accounting in a single medium with a modern authorization concept. In addition to investment protection, the flexibility and compatibility of Kaba products were among the features that influenced the decision in favor of Kaba elolegic. info@kgh.kaba.com 18 Technology center Repsol «TotalYPF Access» center The technology center of Repsol YPF in Madrid has become reality. This scientific complex will unite scientists and experts to investigate and research energy technologies of the future. Exploration, production of hydrocarbons, refining, petrochemistry of polymers, gas, electricity, alternative energies and energy saving will be investigated at the center. In designing the technology center flexibility was one of the most important aspects considered. This is evidenced in the completely modular distribution of the space and the service areas. The designers also emphasized other important criteria including the security, functionality, quality, image, energy efficiency and attractive work environment, which fosters intercommunication and creativity. «Total Access» dans le centre de technologie de Repsol The architect team of Tomás Domínguez and Juan C. Martín Baranda, who have been recognized with several awards, directed the construction of the complex. Among their other most important achievements was the construction of the Inclined Towers of Puerta Europa in Madrid. Kaba’s «Total Access» project consists of supplying access control systems Kaba quattro S equipment for approximately 2000 doors as well as tripod barriers and revolving Kaba Gallenschütz doors. The Com-ID combines in one unique identification medium the advantages of online systems for access, visitor, time and attendance controls in certain specific zones (Kaba Benzing terminals) with stand-alone mecatronic solutions (Kaba elolegic). The Outer Banks of North Carolina are one of the premier resort areas in the United States. These picturesque sand bars with numerous hidden coves and wide beaches provide visitors with the chance to experience wildlife, unspoiled scenery, and recreation. The breezes that made the Wright brothers’ famous flight at Kitty Hawk possible in 1903 attract enthusiasts for sailing and wind surfing. Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty manages some 220 private rental homes in the Outer Banks, welcoming 30,000 vacationers each year, using a full time staff of 45 employees. Until recently, guests had to check in at the centrally located office in order to pick up their keys, adding as much as 80 km to their drive. In 2002, the company selected Oracode time-sensitive electronic pushbutton locks from Kaba Ilco to replace traditional key locks. Kaba provided training to the realtor’s own maintenance staff, who install and program the locks. “We were interested in codes rather than keys, to give us the freedom to focus on customers,” recalls Tanya Kearns, Director of Owner Services. “Guests love the code system because no matter when they arrive, they don’t have to visit the office, and they can change their secret code once they arrive so that it’s also easy to remember.” Each Oracode user, including the property owner, manager, housekeeper and visitors can be given their own secure code. The codes are activated and deactivated according to the lock’s internal clock, so there is no need to reprogram the lock for each rental. www.kaba-ilco.com 20 Gamblingin afever natural paradise Waren, a resort in one of northeastern Germany’s most densely wooded regions, lies on a narrow ridge between a river and a lake. The idyllic town attracts thousands of vacationers a year. Embedded in a pristine landscape of water, forests, and clean air, the new casino in Waren adds an element of urban excitement to a rural holiday. La fièvre du jeu dans un paradis naturel avec Exos sky Le lieu de cure d’air de Waren, situé dans l’un des paysages les plus boisés du nord-est de l’Allemagne, attire annuellement des milliers de vacanciers. En plus de la détente à l’air frais, les visiteurs ont également la possibilité de s’adonner aux plaisirs du jeu à la roulette ou au black-jack dans le casino de Waren. Ce dernier est équipé d’un vaste et puissant système de contrôle d’accès de Kaba. Photos: Igor Heinzel, Waren The Waren Casino, which operates further sites in the Mecklenburg region, was inaugurated in July 2002; it stands out with a fascinating ambiance. Spanning an area of 250 square meters, the casino offers guests 30 slot machines, a blackjack table, and classic American roulette: plenty of opportunities for those who can’t wait to try their luck at gambling. The casino operator imposed strict requirements on the new access control system. In addition to safeguarding authorized access, it also had to be interfaced with an alarm system which could be “armed” or deactivated with user-friendly terminals. Moreover, the operator specified that the online access control system should also activate the escape routes. By far the most important criterion was the capability of gaining quick access to the system from various networked computers, assuring fast response and revocation of access privileges in the event of the loss of a key, for example. These requirements and many more were comprehensively fulfilled with the installation of the Kaba exos sky online access control system, combined with a mechanical Kaba masterkey system, 500 Quattro S automatic cylinders, and 2 Varrit safes. The project was carried out by one of Kaba’s associated partners, Ehlers Security Systems. The company uses «Total Access» products from the Kaba group in its systems integration division. info@ksd.kaba.com 21 Top and design complex technology under one roof The STEP Engineering Park is located on an 11-hectare plot southwest of Stuttgart. The companies headquartered there benefit from excellent traffic interconnections as well as latest-generation communications, services, and infrastructure. Design ultramoderne et technique complexe sous un seul toit Le cœur du Stuttgarter Engineering Park est formé par un bâtiment où, aux côtés de magasins et d’entreprises de services, on trouve également un casino et un centre de fitness. Il est possible d’y régler ses repas au moyen de la carte Legic et les casiers des vestiaires sont gérés par l’entremise d’un bracelet Legic. 22 As the project developer, investor, and rental agent, STEP GmbH offers facilities and services such as conference and seminar rooms, shopping opportunities, a restaurant, and contacts with joint-venture partners, research institutions, and universities. Some 80,000 square meters of office space have been rented since the summer of 1999. In the meantime, about 3,000 people work at this location. Further buildings are under construction. The infrastructure building is the heart and hub of the STEP concept. The ground floor accommodates shops and service businesses. A casino that can host 800 guests occupies the first floor, and the complex also includes a fitness center. In the casino Legic bracelets can be used for cashfree payments and for the lockers. Throughout the building food and beverages can be paid for with Legic cards. The multi-client capability of the Exos 8300 software was one of the key factors that spoke in favor of Kaba as the security systems supplier. It allows all tenants to individually control access to their respective facilities. The operator of the fitness center, for example, has a terminal from which he can authorize specific people to use the elevator. The design of the Kaba hardware was another asset. It integrates smoothly into modern architecture and blends naturally with the sophisticated interior design concept of the Stuttgart Engineering Park. info@ksd.kaba.com Modern day banking Opérations bancaires «dernier cri» Dans le cadre d’importants travaux de rénovation, la Banque cantonale d’Uri a défini un concept avec une zone d’utilisation conviviale ouverte jour et nuit, où aucun guichet ni vitre blindée ne sépare le client de son conseiller bancaire. Within the scope of an extensive modernization project, the Urner Kantonalbank opted for a concept with an open, user-friendly 24-hour zone. Since mid-April 2002, the Urner Kantonalbank in the Swiss town of Altdorf has been welcoming its customers in a totally new ambiance. Neither teller windows nor bulletproof glass separate customers from the staff members who serve them. Innovative cash handling technologies made it possible to convert the bank’s entire ground level into a spacious hall with a pleasant atmosphere where people can interact. The “marketplace,” designed according to the latest insights, is accessed through modern glass entrances. The bank’s advisors and their clients share the same room and to some extent even work with the same terminals which are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as self-service terminals. In the customer zone, a fingerprint reader uses biometric identification to control access to the elevator which descends to the safe deposit vault. If the identification process is successful on the basis of unique biometric data, the control system also releases the customer’s deposit box which can then be opened with the customer’s personal Kaba key. Apart from Kaba AG, which supplied the asset protection equipment, Kaba Gilgen also contributed extensively to this customer- and user-friendly environment. It provided the sliding doors for the main and secondary entrances, the movable walls in the teller room, the revolving doors for the personnel entrance. Thanks to «Total Access», the design of all these products reflects the same style with singlesource convenience. info@kgs.kaba.com info@ksr.kaba.com 23 Sophisticated locks for a smart campus Wake Forest University in Winston Salem NC consistently ranks among the top institutions for medical research, business management, and undergraduate programs in the United States. The cylinders protect storage rooms, classrooms, computer centers, dorms and even Wait Chapel, home of the 2000 US Presidential Debate between then-Governor George W. Bush and challenger Vice President Al Gore. Prior to the debate the cylinders were quickly given new combinations, providing extra protection to the candidates’ entourages and members of the national press. In special applications where keyless convenience is important, Wake Forest University uses mechanical pushbutton locks. These locks work well in non-hardwired areas like fraternity and sorority dormitories. Members are able to come and go as they please, with the simplicity and security of a combination code. Mechanical pushbutton locks also protect locker rooms in two athletic facilities, and sports equipment rooms for teams like volleyball, soccer, lacrosse and tennis. Wake Forest also uses the locks in science and math labs in several buildings, and in administrative settings. info@khs.kaba.com 24 Enterprise Data Collection using Internet technology Saisie des données d’exploitation par Internet Basé sur la technologie Internet, le terminal Bedanet 9540 de Kaba Benzing dispose d’une flexibilité de dialogue qui autorise une adaptation exacte des processus de saisie aux besoins de l’entreprise. The new design offers plenty of space for the integration of Kerberos tripod barriers and swinging doors. Depending on customer preferences, the sides can be manufactured either from durable stainless steel or easy-tomaintain plastic. Different colors and surface textures are available to adapt the enclosures to their architectural surroundings. The new system is very versatile. Expert lecturers and Kaba executive officers dealt with topics such as the change from mechanics to mechatronics and diversification in the lock industry, which is presently undergoing a process of globalization and internationalization. The program included a wide range of practical studies from management and marketing knowhow to shop strategy as well as training elements such as time management, sport activities, business manners and discipline, the latter inspired by the annual Kaba Management Seminar.
