FOOTNOTES AUGUST 2014 If, like me you love a Parkrun but hate the 30 minute schlep from Hertford/Ware on a Saturday morning (especially if you’ve had a few vinos the night before and Caroline Reardon is driving!) all the way to Gunpowder Park, Waltham Abbey you’ll be glad to hear that Hertford is getting it’s very own Parkrun come October! Panshanger Park, on the west side of Hertford, is in a very beautiful undulating setting and the 5k (3.1 miles) Parkrun has been mapped out on a single circuit which starts through woods, crosses fields, goes between lakes, over bridges and ends next to the Mimram river. BAGGERS BEING CHASED BY A CROCODILE! Ware Joggers have been invited by Friends of Panshanger Park to assist with a test run on Sunday October 5th at 2pm. This test event won’t be officially recorded as a Parkrun but if you bring your barcode you will get a time. Race 3 of the Club Championships, Standalone 10k is earlier in the day at 9.30am, so leaves plenty of time to attend. The first official run will take place on Saturday October 11th at 9am, and the best bit is that a coffee van will be in situ for both dates. It will also be supported by Garden City Runners from WGC, so lets get a really big Ware Joggers turn out and show them who the best and biggest running club in the area is! Panshanger Park is located at SG14 2NA and the easiest parking in on Thieves Lane just off the A414 and is free. Those new to Parkrun can register for a bar code at www.parkrun.org.uk/register and for plastic bar codes (which I highly recommend) once you have your number and can be attached to your running shoe: www.parkrun-barcode.org.uk Amanda Sykes In This Issue ◊ Club Championship Races ◊ Meet a Joggeroo ◊ WJ’s Charity 2014/15 ◊ Thunder Run Race Report ◊ Wodson Park You can you raise funds for Ware Joggers when you shop on line, by finding retailers through easyfunding.org.uk. Thunder Run Report 2015 by Les Taylor Saturday 26th July at midday, the madness began! 2 Ware Joggers (Martin Blacker and myself) lined up at the very back of the field. Ahead of us , an array of runners setting off as relay teams consisting of 8, 5 or 2 man teams. There were 175 like minded individuals also running the event solo! 24 hours to go, start the clock and we’re off! SOLO – I’ve never been called SOLO before but in this race because I had been given a yellow number everyone supporting the event and doing it called me SOLO. “come on Solo” or “ keep going Solo” or “your mental Solo”…..get the picture! They called out to Martin the same. When we ran together they called at us “Brilliant Solo’s” or “not far now Solo’s” or “your idiots Solo’s”……….. It was hot, probably approaching 30° as we set off on lap 1. The course is 10k in length, all off road X-country type land with a few hills thrown in to keep you interested. The first half takes you around the camp site, through some meadows and along the side of a few scorched fields. The second half is mainly in woodland and quite technical with sharp turns, tree roots and dips. The last 2k brings you out on a ridge which once descended takes you along the back of the camp site to the start/finish. Martin and I separated after about 2k, I felt the need to crack on and from that point we ran our own race until late at night some 90k later we joined up to run together for a while. Lap 1 was crowded, but as the lap ended the field had stretched out. The fastest relay runners were going round in approx. 35-45 mins. I’d crossed the line in just over an hour, that’s pretty fast for a Solo. The rest of the daylight hours whizzed by as I covered 70k in approx. 9 hours. It was hot and refuelling was important. That’s where the support team played there part. Waiting patiently at the appointed spot with a bag full of drinks and grub. Usually, I stopped, took a bottle or two and a bag of food. It was very hot and I suspect the heat had got to me a bit as my appetite had gone after 6 hours and it was becoming difficult to eat anything! Water seemed to be the only thing going down for a while. At about Midnight, I had to take a longer stop and change my running gear, I realized at this point that the pants I’d started the race with were probably too tight and had contributed to the loss of appetite issue that was going to get the better of me a bit later. Martin had caught me up and we ran together in the dark hours of the early morning with bright lights on our foreheads shinning out in front of us. Most of the camp site was asleep, apart from the start/finish area where the relay teams just kept on changing over. As you cross the line someone would shout encouragement at us as we trotted through to start another lap. I ran with Martin for a couple of laps and it was during this time that we completed 10 laps (100k) together, but as we approached pit stop 11 at about 16 hours (or 4am) I had to stop. I needed to sit down, I was knackered. The support team were now in charge of my body which seemed to be deciding it was time to stop. Howard, Mark and Katie hovered around me. I ate some more rice pudding, a cake, a pack of cheese snips, a glass of banana milk. It didn’t work! apparently I was talking nonsense and I was still like a zombie. Mark persuaded me to get some ZZZ’s. I reluctantly gave in and went to bed for 1 hour. I awoke to the voice of Mark Cyl indicating that an hour had gone by. I was in a ‘wake up haze’ and I needed a few minutes to focus and then…I stood up, I felt kinda good! The rest had worked and I felt the need to run very quickly. I grabbed a flapjack, downed a bottle of water and took off. At the same moment Martin was just being walked back into camp having completed a lap more than I, he looked like I felt a couple of hours previous. Now was the best time of the race for me, it was light, the sun was coming up, some people were starting to emerge from their tents that ran along the edge of the course and there was the smell of bacon in the air. I was feeling really strong and somehow managed to do two really fast laps. I caught the boys out by getting around the lap some 20 minutes quicker than expected. At the end of lap 14, approx. 22 hours in (10am) I caught up with Martin again. We were on the same lap again. We calculated and decided that this was going to be our last lap. We were slowing now and much of the lap was at walking pace! The crowds were now all over the course, shouting encouragement and cheering as we went by. The last hill alongside the camp site had up to 300 people cheering as the finishers went by. The noise was very uplifting as we went by. As we turned out of the final bend we could see the finish and together we crossed the line hands held high…..What a moment! 15 laps (150k or 93 miles) we finished together. Our supporters were there to meet us with camera’s flashing and lots of hugging and back slapping. It was a truly awesome feeling to have done it. Strange as is may seem, I felt like I had not finished a solo race, it felt like I was crossing the line for a team! That team had got me there by going that extra mile! Feeding and watering, encouraging and supporting both Martin and I throughout the race, before and after. I could not have done it without them. So I dedicate the medal I received for doing the 2014 edition of Thunder Run to: Howard and Kate, Mark and Jo, Katie, Carol and Jake plus the 4 little ones who shouted and cheered as well. Will I do it again? As expected, immediately after I said NO, NO, NO! But a few weeks on and all the pains have gone. YES, YES, YES……I can’t wait to tackle this event once more. I learnt a lot about myself and how to keep going for 24 hours. I will return and go a few laps further next year and I suspect that there will be many more Ware Joggers in next year’s race. It is an unbelievable event, one that everyone should have a go at. The camaraderie in the teams, with other teams and individuals is absolutely fantastic. But for now I’ll be happy to do a 10k race!
