WHY NATIONAL EATING DISORDERS AWARENESS WEEK? 1 in 5 Children in America struggle with Mental Illness. (Source: Centers for Disease Control 2013 Report) More people die from eating disorders than from any psychiatric illness. (Source: National Institute of Mental Health) We can (and must) do better. • Things we know: • It is not always safe to allow students themselves to lead or participate in eating disorder trainings without implementing the 5 Standards of Eating Disorders Training (attached) and without the involvement of certified eating disorders specialists, as applicable. The 18 student-led program ideas identified in this packet indicate those that are appropriate for students to lead. • All other programs in this resource packet are designed to be led incorporating mentalfitness’ 5 Standards of Eating Disorders Training (see attached) • When appropriate, we recommend that a “certified eating disorders specialist (CEDS)” be in attendance at some Q&A discussions. Guidelines for finding CEDS in your area are also attached. © 2006-2014 MentalFitness, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Who We Are The mission of mentalfitness, inc. is to build mental fitness in all youth through arts-based awareness and prevention programs. We collaborate with national experts in medicine, nutrition and mental health to bring together (and create new) evidence-based programs that improve the seven protective categories of mental fitness; community connections, self-esteem, media literacy, mindfulness, body image, stress-management, nourishing body & mind. Our leadership team of more than 50 medical experts and educators reviewed research studies to connect the dots and find the shared protective factors that exist between eating disorders, addictions and other mental illnesses. These were placed onto a map and put into 7 protective categories. Our goal is to build all 7 protective categories in all youth. R d mentalfitness, inc. program resources: NATIONAL EATING DISORDERS AWARENESS WEEK FEB. 23-MAR. 1 MFI: 5 Standards for Leading Eating Disorders Trainings in a School or University Setting Because all of the 6 types of eating disorders are the most serious and deadly of all psychiatric illnesses, mentalfitness, inc. has developed standards for leading eating disorders trainings in a school or university setting. 1. When Possible, Apply the Tiered Training Approach. After years of developing eating disorders trainings in schools, universities and medical institutions, we know it is safer to apply a “tiered” approach to eating disorders trainings in a school setting. First Tier: Train the Faculty and Staff of a school. Second Tier: Train the Parents. Third Tier: Train the Students. 2. Connect With Vetted ED Resources. Those leading the training should connect with a minimum of 5 vetted eating disorders resources in the area PRIOR to the presentation. We would prefer those specialists who are credentialed as “Certified Eating Disorders Specialists” (CEDS) from the iaedp organization or as “Fellows of the Academy for Eating Disorders” (FAED) from the AED organization (the two professional organizations that exist today.) Our guidelines for finding a CEDS is provided at the end of this kit. When vetting the resources in the area, we encourage schools and communities to try to find public health, sliding scale / Spanish-speaking, as well as private pay and eating disorders resources that accept insurance prior to leading a training. Our nonprofit (and many others) can assist in this process. 3. Review How To Manage Serious Mental Illness In School. Schools should already have a policy and procedure in place for managing serious mental illness in the school setting. Prior to leading a training, we recommend that these policies are reviewed and clarified between school counselors, nurses, social workers and educators. It is always a good idea to also connect with the local Department of Mental Health or other applicable agency to review policies, as applicable. 4. Put Resources in the Hands of Participants. Once the training is established, we recommend that PRIOR to the film screening or seminar, myth-buster sheets are distributed to every audience member without them having to ask for it. We have found that this greatly reduces the shame when an audience member does not have to physically ask for resources or help. 5. Follow Guidelines. For those purchasing our educational tools, we recommend following our recommended guidelines for leading the film seminar, Q&A and for distributing our handouts. © 2006-2014 MentalFitness, Inc. Myth Busters about Eating Disorders (Source: National Institute of Mental Health, unless otherwise noted) Guide to Finding a Specialist For information on how to find a qualified eating disorders specialist, please see the next page. Myth Busters About Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating • There are at LEAST SIX types of Eating Disorders: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) -- which in 2013 was re-named OSFED (Otherwise Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder – two sub-types (Purging or a-typical Anorexia)), UFED (Unidentified), ARFID (Avoidant or Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). • Disordered Eating (dieting and chaotic eating patterns that include restricting food), is the “norm” in American culture and can lead to serious illnesses such as female athlete triad syndrome, cardiac complications and eating disorders. • Eating Disorders cannot be controlled by a matter of will. They are serious biological illnesses that require the treatment of specialists. • At Least 38 million Americans are struggling with an eating disorder. (Source: National Eating Disorders Association, • 7 million of those struggling with eating disorders are males. Male eating disorders often go undiagnosed. • More people die from eating disorders than from any other psychiatric illness • Binge Eating Disorder Association, National Association for Males with Eating Disorders) (Source National Association for Males with Eating Disorders) More women struggle with eating disorders than with breast cancer. (Source: 2010 National Cancer Institute, SEER, National Eating Disorders Association, Binge Eating Disorder Association) • More than 1/3 of all athletes suffer from disordered eating behaviors. For free resources and handouts on proper sports nutrition, please visit ThinkEatPlay.org. • Female athletes who are not getting enough calories, could be at risk for Female Athlete Triad syndrome (low caloric intake leads to amenorrhea which can lead to bone loss). Learn more about the Triad at ThinkEatPlay.org. • Eating disorders frequently co-exist with other psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, alcoholism or substance abuse, self-harming, OCD, PTSD or ADHD. • People with anorexia are up to ten times more likely to die as a result of their illness. The most common complications that lead to death are cardiac arrest, electrolyte imbalances and suicide. • Rates of dieting among adolescent girls are estimated at 60 and 70 percent, as reported by a 2006 study by Drs. James D. Lock and Daniel Le Grange. (Source: HELP YOUR TEENAGER BEAT AN EATING DISORDER by James Lock, MD, Ph.D. and Daniel Le Grange, Ph.D., p.132-33) • 35% - 40% of dieters will develop an eating disorder. • Eating disorders are increasing among diverse ethnic and sociocultural communities, despite the erroneous beliefs that this only affects Caucasian teens. • Between 30% to 50% of those in treatment for obesity may be struggling with ANY of the eating disorders, including binge eating disorder or restrictive disorders. (Source: Binge Eating Disorder Association) • Dieting and exercise are NOT the best treatment interventions for those with eating disorders, including binge eating disorder. (Source: Craig Johnson, Ph.D., FAED, CEDS, Clinical Director, Eating Recovery Center). Effective treatment for Binge Eating Disorder is similar to Bulimia. © 2006-2013 Mental Fitness, Inc. All rights reserved. c/o Mary Black Foundation, 349 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302, Other Resources GUIDE TO FINDING AN EATING DISORDERS SPECIALIST, by Laura Lees, Psy.D., CEDS Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder and EDNOS / OSFED often require treatment by a team of providers, including a licensed psychotherapist, nutritionist, physician and psychiatrist. These are questions you can ask a therapist to determine if each are an eating disorder specialist: • Have you had specialized training specifically in eating disorders? What kind of training? How Long? • Have you ever trained or worked in a hospital eating disorders program? Where? How Long? • Do you have any credentials showing you are an eating disorder specialist? What are they? Through what certifying organization? (note: CEDS and FAED are highest regarded credentials) • Do you currently have a supervisor who is an eating disorders specialist? Who is it? • What professional eating disorder associations are you a member of? NOTE: The major associations are: Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP) and National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) • What eating disorder journals do you read? NOTE: The major journals and newsletters are: International Journal of Eating Disorders, Journal of the Treatment and Prevention of Eating Disorders, Renfrew Perspectives, IAEDP Connections, Eating Disorders Review, Health At Every Size • What continuing education have you received or taught on eating disorders in the past two years? NOTE: Therapists should attend seminars or conventions or engage in selfstudy for continuing education credits to continue their professional development on a regular basis. If a provider has no formal eating disorders training, hospital experience or supervisor, it would be advisable to find a specialist with appropriate qualifications to help you.
