Use the glue sparingly, a little glue goes a long way.
Choose a few parts to “lock in” the project.
The last and final step on my intarsia projects is to glue it
down to a backing. I started out using 1/4” plywood until we had
problems with the plywood warping. I changed material and now
use 1/8” tempered hardboard (also known as Masonite). This has
proven to be a very stable product, plus the darker color helps to
minimize the backing. Many people have shared with me their
frustrations with gluing their projects down. “It fit so good until I
started gluing it, I don’t know what happened”. I understand the
feeling, after over 35 years of experience I have had just about every
problem imaginable. I took the opportunity to photograph one of
the new projects as I glued it down.
I always glue the parts onto a backing. Gluing the parts
together, edge gluing, is almost impossible to do successfully. Not
to mention the stress problems the wood encounters with humidity fluctuations. Wood shrinks and expands with the humidity. If
you edge glue pieces of wood with opposite grain directions there

Creative Mirror Ideas
Mr. Arntsen started scrolling in 2004 when he bought
Judy’s “Easy to Make Intarsia” book. Since then, Alvin has
made over 60 Intarsia pieces for family, friends and charity
auctions.
The Magnolia Door Top - I-242 & Oak Leaf Door
Top - I-250 were used to make beautiful mirrors for his wife
and daughters-in-law.
Mr. Arntsen’s instructions for the Magnolia Door Top Mirror:
Detail of
Corner
Blooms
1. When making copies of the Magnolia Door Top, reduce pattern to 79%. 2. This will make the width of the mirror header 30”. Make as a completed unit.
3. Bottom corners were made using the side magnolia buds put together at the break line forming a 90-degree corner.
4. The frame was made from ¾ inch stock and is 2” wide. The total frame mea
sures 30 x 50 with a ¼ rabbet on the underside for the mirror. Finish frame as complete unit.
5. Miter the corners and round over the edges. Use glue, dowels or biscuits to assemble the frame and top.
6. Mirror was made by a glass shop and installed.
7. Because of the weight, a heavy-duty mirror hanger was installed between the topper and frame. Maple, Oak and mahogany were used for the project, but feel free to make your own wood
choices and dimensions. Thanks Mr. Arntsen for sharing your ideas with our intarsia enthusiasts, we are sure it will inspire others.
New Size Sanding Pads

2 3/4”
Diameter Diameter
1/2”
7/8”
The manufacturer of the Flex Drum
Sander has listened to our requests to make it
easier to slide the pad on the arbor. Plus the pad
is a larger diameter which will make it last longer and remove more material at a faster rate.
We are discontinuing the 100 grit and adding a
180 grit sleeve.
The new size drum will not fit the older arbors
purchased before 2008. Last years open house was a blast. We want to invite everyone to this years open house on Saturday October 22, 2011 from
10:00am to 3:00pm. Judy will be available to meet and greet everyone
along with other guests involved in the scroll sawing industry.
We will have brag tables if you would like to bring some of
your projects. Come and enjoy coffee, cookies, and a hot dog lunch
served from 12:00 to 1:00. We look forward to another great time in
the foothills of the Smoky Mountains.

Gluing Continued from page 2
Glue the raising shims and parts after all the other
parts are glued down.
is a very good chance one part will split. Gluing the parts to
a separate backing, giving it a little space between the parts,
gives it some room to move.
Also applying the finish before gluing the parts
down will help ensure the parts are sealed properly. We put
a coat on the surface and all the sides, not on the bottom
of the parts. We put three coats of polyurethane gel before
gluing the project down. An added benefit to applying the
finish first is if you get a drop of glue on any of the parts it
wipes off very easily.
I trace around the finished project onto a piece of
white paper. It’s helpful to spray a light coat of spray adhe-
sive to keep the parts from sliding all over the place. I glue this tracing/
pattern to the tempered hardboard. When cutting the backing stay
about 1/16” inside the line. I have been using Titebond Molding &
Trim Glue. It is the thickest, fastest-drying glue available for use with
porous and semi-porous materials. The glue provides a strong initial
tack and fast speed of set, yet allows realignment of working pieces. It
also develops a bond stronger than the wood itself and it is very flexible which allows for some shrinking and expansion.
First make sure everything fits on the backing. Take the time
to check all sides to make sure none of the backing is exposed. Then I
glue a few outside edge parts to lock in the entire project.
On the cat in the box I chose the large lower left side of the
box. This is an easy part to remove without upsetting the placement
of the rest of the parts. Also note I use the glue sparingly, a little glue
goes a long way. Excess glue can cause the parts to “float” to one side
or the other. Next I glued the right box lid behind the cats ear. I let
the glue set up on these two parts before gluing the rest. Having a few
pieces locked in will help keep things from shifting as you glue the rest
of the project down.
I glued all the parts that are not raised with a shim. Then I
remove the parts and shims and glue them one shim at a time. The
last shim is “Rx3” under the nose of the cat. After gluing these parts
you have a little time to space the parts as needed. Whenever you cut
up sections like the cats eyes out of the same piece of wood the kerf of
the saw blade (even using a 2/0) removes some wood from the parts
making them a little smaller. If you have lots of cuts like this you need
to allow a little space between the parts otherwise the adjoining parts
will not fit properly.
New Additions to the “Classroom in a Tube”
Our Classroom in a Tube pattern series has improved!
The Classroom in a Tube will come to your door ready for you to start
cutting wood immediately. No more worries about having copies made.
The Tube will contain:
• One red line master pattern for reference.
• Two sets of the pattern sections already cut apart (dissected). These
are printed with red lines and are printed on sheets of velum paper. You
will be amazed how much easier it is to follow a red line with your saw
blade. This will make it much easier to saw accurately. The velum paper
is transparent which helps finding that special grain pattern for each
part of your Intarsia project.
DO NOT make copies of the cut-up patterns. Copies may become distorted.
With the purchase of the classroom in a tube you can buy additional sheets of the pattern sections for $4.95 ea.
• One complete set of step by step instructions from class with
color photos and reference photos of the subject matter.
This fall we have three
new Classroom in a Tube
projects. The Beginner Duck,
Intermediate 2 Lion Cub, and the Advanced Annie Oakley. See on page 5 and 17.

NEW PATTERNS
“Annie” (CT-9) Annie is the project for this years advanced
class. I used walnut for the hair, basswood for the face, neck,
and ears, western red cedar for the shirt, scarf and hat. I had
some old barnwood that I used for the background section
with the lettering. Basswood works great for faces. The pattern
set comes with one master pattern, two sheets of the pattern
parts and a 16 page set of instructions. Please see page 17 for
more details.
“Beginner Duck” (CT-7) This has been the project for the
beginner class for quite some time. After many requests for a
beginner classroom in a tube we decided to make the pattern
available for everyone. Almost all of it is western red cedar
except for the white areas which are aspen. The pattern set
comes with one master pattern, two sheets of the pattern
parts and a 10 page set of instructions. Please see page 17 for
more details.
“Lion Cub Intermediate 2” (CT-8) The Lion Cub is the
project for this years Intermediate 2 class. I used western red
cedar for everything except the white and the very dark areas.
I used aspen for the white wood and walnut for the dark
parts. The lion cub has 18 pages of instructions to help you
shape the project and comes with the master and two sheets
of pattern parts.
“Soaring Eagle” (I-296) I used walnut for all the dark
parts, aspen for the white, and some yellow heart for the beak
and feet. I’m sure everyone will enjoy making this project, it
has very few small parts. The contrasts of the walnut and aspen
make a stunning piece.
“Cat in a Box” (I-297) The cat is an easier project to make.
I used western red cedar for the box, walnut and aspen for the
cat. You can easily change the colors of the cat. It seems cats
are naturally attracted to boxes.
“Boxer Puppy” (I-298) I’ve had requests for a boxer without
the ears clipped. I thought the puppy was a great way to add
another boxer to the intarsia patterns. I used western red cedar
for the brown shades, walnut for the dark, and some aspen for
the white parts.
“12 Days of Christmas” (I-299) 1 through 6 Everyone that
has come by the shop as these were being made has mentioned
they can’t wait for the patterns to be ready. I found some wood
they called “Pink MyLady” wood from a local lumberyard. I
used the pink wood cut down to 1/2” thickness for the numbers
on all 12 ornaments. I used some yellow heart, aspen, walnut
and western red cedar. Due to size I could only put six ornaments per pattern.
“12 Days of Christmas” (I-300) 7 through 12 The second
set gets a little more complex with the “Lords Leaping”, “Pipers
Piping”, and “Drummers Drumming”. The pattern includes
loops on the backing to hang the ornaments.
Have fun, Judy

Classroom in a Tube $24.95 ea.
Classroom in a Tube patterns include; One red line master pattern for reference. Two sets of the pattern sections already cut apart (dissected). These are printed with red lines and are printed on sheets of velum paper. You will be amazed how much easier it is to follow a
red line with your saw blade. This will make it much easier to saw accurately. The velum paper is transparent which helps finding that
special grain pattern for each part of your Intarsia project. DO NOT make copies of the cut-up patterns. Copies may become distorted.
One complete set of step by step instructions from class with color photo and reference photos of the subject matter.
With the purchase of the classroom in a tube you can buy additional sheets of the pattern sections for $4.95 ea.

HARDWARE ITEMS $8.00 S & H (unless otherwise indicated)
Intarsia Detail Sanders
Set includes one bow sander
and one flexible flat sander.
Invented by an Intarsia enthusiast in Florida, just for Intarsia projects. You will find these sanders hard to replace, and use them every step of the way on your Intarsia projects, from start to
finish. The bow sander works great for those “hard to get to” areas, and the flexible flat sander is
great for contour sanding. These sanders do not require special sandpaper, and use your favorite
grit cloth backed sanding sheets, cut into strips. The bow sander will also hold abrasive cord.
The set comes with some pre-cut strips of sandpaper to help get you started.
#IS-1 $21.95 set of two
#IS-F Flat Sander only $12.00ea.
#IS-B Bow Sander only $12.00ea.

Flex Drum Sander • Get inflatable sander results
This soft drum sander will help you attain the soft contours on your Intarsia projects. This
specially designed unit clamps to your 2000 (or 1725) R.P.M motor. Designed to fit 5/8”
motor shaft it also comes with a reducer bushing to fit 1/2” motor shafts. The flex sander is
approximately 2 3/4” in diameter x 7” in length. Just push the pad and sleeve onto the arbor
and it stays put on it’s own (there are two abrasive strips on the arbor to help). You can sand
past the ends without the fear of marking the work piece, and even use the end to put a “dish”
shape in the part if you need to.

Comes with one #A-CHA-5, 1/4”collet holder (with collet), one #TM-3 left
hand, and one #TM-4 right hand tapered spindles. In order to run two Kirjes
sanders (as pictured above) you will need to purchase an additional collet
listed below. We recommend mounting the #140 on the right and the #120
on the left of the bench lathe, as pictured above.
The Kirges #130 will not fit on the lathe.

Kirjes Inflatable Sanders • Use with the Foredom Lathe above
The Kirges sanders are soft on the edges which makes getting into tight places without tearing up the rest of the piece much easier. I would
not recommend these sanders for your heavy sanding, the larger diameter drums work better for that. These little sanders have saved me time
when adding extra detail to my intarsia projects. The air is pumped in through the stem. Be sure to place the sanding sleeve over the edges of
the black rubber bulb. If you start seeing black streaks on your wood it’s best to stop and move the sanding sleeve. It is easy to sand a hole in
the rubber. I use a rougher grit on the K-120 (like a 80 grit) and a smoother grit on the K-140 (220 grit).

Foot Switch
We use three coats of this
gel on our projects which produces a very nice finish,
easy to get professional results. We coat each piece
before gluing down.
Intarsia Whiting Gel if using white pine or
any white wood that yellows. The white pigment will
help keep the wood a lighter shade. This whiting is the
same basic formula as the regular clear, with a white
pigment added. The pigment makes the gel look more
lumpy. For more natural results just use one coat of
white followed by two coats of clear.
Old Masters is only available to those living
in the contiguous U.S. One can of gel is $9.00 shpg.
charge, two - three cans of gel is $13.00 shpg., four
cans is $14.00 shpg., five cans is $15.00. Sorry for the
price increase, UPS and USPS have raised their rates.
Hot Melt Glue Gun
This Hot Glue Gun heats to 400 degrees and
has 200 watts of power. We also have the glue
for this gun in 10” sticks. We use a combination of yellow woodworking glue and the hot
glue works like a clamp to hold the part in
place until the woodworking glue has
time to set up. The glue sticks are

the “INTARSIA EXPERIENCE” 2011 & 2012 Class Information
The classes are held in our Studio/Woodshop located in Seymour, TN (note map on page 22). You will take home a project that
is completely shaped/sanded and a backing cut out for it. We do not put a finish on it (takes too long to dry).
BEGINNER Class: We will cover basic skills required to get you started on the right foot with Intarsia. You should have some
skill using a scroll saw. If not, we suggest you take a scroll saw course or at least practice on your scroll saw before attending the
class. We will cover each step, using an easier pattern to help you have a good understanding of this technique. This is beginning
Intarsia, not beginning woodworking.
Scroll Sawing for Intarsia Class. For those of you brand new to scroll sawing for intarsia we now have a Tuesday afternoon (the
Tuesday before class day) scroll sawing class. The goal of this class is to learn basic intarsia scroll sawing skills that are needed to
make your pieces fit. The class will start at 1:00pm and finish up at 4:30pm. The dates of the beginner scroll sawing classes will
be on the Tuesday before the Beginner class (May 1st, Sept 18th). The fee for the Scroll Sawing Intarsia class is only $40.00.
INTERMEDIATE 1 Class: We will spend a little less time on the wood selection and layout. The project will be a little more complex
than the beginner project. The main focus will be on improving your scroll sawing skills to help ensure a good fit on your projects,
plus we will spend more time on shaping and adding texture to your project. You should have at least 8 to 14 Intarsia projects
before this class. If not, we suggest you make more projects before attending the class, or take the beginner class first.
INTERMEDIATE 2 Class: Will move quickly through the wood selection and layout. We will get more detailed about colors and
grain selection, you should have experience scroll sawing. The majority of the time on shaping and adding texture to your project.
You should have made 14 to 24 Intarsia projects before this class. If not, we suggest you make more projects before attending the
class, or take the beginner or intermediate 1 class first.
ADVANCED Class: You must attend an Intermediate 2 class before you can take the Advanced Class. We will send you the patterns
for the project, you will cut the project out before class using the wood of your choice. Having the project cut out before class will
enable you to have three days with Judy contouring the project. This class has been focusing on the human face, the complexities
involved in making a realistic face will make all other projects seem like a piece of cake. The class will cover how to have a successful project using lots of raising shims for added dimension. It will be interesting to see the choices of wood each student uses. The
project will be something that Judy has designed just for the class.
TUITION
$475.00 Three Day Class: All classes will be held from Wednesday through Friday. This will be a “hands on” class. All classes
will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 5 PM with a 1 hour lunch break, we will provide picnic lunches. We will also provide refreshments and snacks during the day.
PAYMENTS
To register for a class we require a deposit of $200.00. FULL PAYMENT FOR THE TUITION MUST BE RECEIVED TWO
WEEKS PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CLASS. Due to long waiting lists, we ask that you notify us as soon as possible if you have a change of plans so that we can fill your class space. There will be a $50 fee to transfer from one class to another. Class payments will not be transferred to future classes outside the current year’s class schedule.
REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY
To be eligible for any returned money, you must notify us as soon as possible. There will be an automatic $50 cancellation fee for
any canceled registration, regardless of the date of withdrawal.
If you withdraw from a class more than 60 days in advance, the school will refund the deposit on the class, less the $50 cancellation fee (refund of $150.00). If you withdraw 30 to 59 days before the class, the school will refund only 50% of the deposit
on the class, less the $50 cancellation fee (refund of $50.00). If you withdraw within 29 days of the class, there will be NO
REFUND ON ALL PAID MONEY FOR ANY REASON. If you cancel a class and are eligible for a refund, the available refundable money can be applied to another class in the same year (less the $50 cancellation fee). You cannot transfer money to another
class in the next year’s schedule. If for any reason Roberts Studio must cancel a class, all money will be refunded.
