Custom Fly Tying for Salmon & Steelhead
In the past, Dennis has tied at a number of fly fishing venues including the
Sandy River Spey Clave, Sportsman Expo Sacramento, Two hands @ Tou Velle
Spey Event, Turtle Bay Museum Fly Tying Expo, and at fly fishing clubs.
Experience:
I began fly fishing and tying flies for steelhead and salmon in 1968 while attending Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. My fly tying
expertise began while at Humboldt State and I often visited with North Coast steelhead fly fishing pioneers’ such as Lloyd Silvius and Art Dedini to
purchase materials and hooks.
After graduation, I started working for the California Department of Fish and Game at the Nimbus Salmon and Steelhead Hatchery and worked
throughout Northern and Central California as a fishery biologist during a 35-year career with the state. Specific projects I worked on or supervised
included Russian River steelhead evaluations, North Coast timber harvest review, Central Valley and Sierra Nevada fisheries management, Klamath River Salmon and Steelhead studies, and statewide Lake and Reservoir Management and Wild Trout programs.
What You Get...
Fly Pricing
Dennis specializes in tying flies for discriminating anglers, creating new and unique patterns, while also reproducing the traditional classic patterns. He uses the finest materials,
high quality hooks and maintains a vast library of patterns to produce 1,000’s of traditional,
historic, classical, and new steelhead and salmon patterns. Only the finest available
materials are used for my flies and I pride myself on tying beautifully proportioned flies with
small neat heads.
Fly prices are quoted on an individual price per
fly with discounts available on orders of one dozen or more of a specific pattern. Special hooks,
tying materials or methods will increase the price.
All orders are shipped in a clear lid tin fly box with
cork insert. Custom fly orders are shipped within
two weeks from receipt of the order.
Each fly receives several coats of head cement to increase the fly’s durability and appearance. Flies are not overdressed with an excess of materials like commercial patterns.
Rather than tie with easier and less expensive chenille, ostrich, peacock herl or other
feathers are twisted on wire or thread to create beautiful and durable bodies. Ribbings
are usually tied in reverse and I often use a singled strand wire or several strands twisted
together to enhance the appearance and durability of the fly. Feather and hair wings are
securely attached to ensure that they will not pull out. I personally test patterns in a test
tank to ensure that they swim correctly present the most life-like appearance possible.
Just like the old days, your flies are tied to order and to your exacting specifications. As
a custom fly tier, Dennis can tie a single fly on a spe¬cific hook size and style, or create
a boxful of your favorite and most productive patterns. Salmon and steelhead styles that
Dennis ties include - traditional hair and feather wing; Spey and Dee; practitioners, shrimp
and prawn; marabou; articulated intruder patterns; dry and waking; comet and bug; and
tube patterns.
