technique of working with wax as a cold
medium applied over colored grounds,
scratching through the surface with pencil.
This series was inspired by Steve’s time
spent in New Zealand with the indigenous Maori people.
Cat Crotchett lives and works in Kalamazoo
sharing her passion for encaustic all over the
world by teaching workshops in Indonesia,
New England, Chicago, and locally for
Western Michigan University and the KIA.
Her modular works are inspired by her time
spent working in Indonesia.

Muskegon Museum of Art and is carried

turn it into a seemingly weightless
series of flowing forms, curling and
interlocking with a distinct sense
of movement. “I work in all types
of stone: soapstone, alabaster,
limestone, marble, basalt, and
granite. I love the process of taking
a raw, dense block of stone and
transforming it into a balanced and
harmonious object. When I create I am always pushing myself, my
designs and the limits of the stone to bring out a fluid and balanced form, and to create
artwork that is graceful, delicate and has a sense of movement. You don’t think of stone as
having these qualities but these are some of the things I strive for in my work.”

Ypspilanti and is an Associate Professor at
Eastern Michigan University. Her work combines
design technology with the craftsmanship of hand
weaving. She designs and plots her weaving
patterns using computerized design software and
then hand weaves her patterns using up to eight
different shuttles to create weftback weaves and
brocade areas in her pieces. Her abstract design
combined with portrait or figure weaving makes
an outstanding impression in this contemporary
weavers work.
Cathryn is currently finishing up her sabbatical
in Norway and
will be bringing
some exciting
new work to this
exhibition.

For over a decade, Wilson
has ground out a life on stage,
growing and evolving into one
of Michigan’s proudest rootsbased rockers. His
former and widely
celebrated project,
Sweet Japonic,
won three WYCE
Jammie Awards for Best Rock Album. After stepping out
on his own in 2010, Wilson’s debut solo album, a seven
song self-titled, earned four 2013 Jammie nominations,
winning the Special Jury Prize for Best New Artist. In
it, Lucas is laid bare before all. The project chronicles
Wilson’s artistic coming of age, from the Japonic split,
through fear, addiction, and self-doubt, past the pain to
very new and euphoric Lucas Wilson - a man found on
his own creation. It’s emotive and evocative, hopeful and
heart breaking, with genuine searing realness. $12.50.

Join in on the fun and kick off the 2014 Baby Food
Festival by watching the film “Jumanji” on the big
screen! The film is a visually elaborate fantasy about an
enchanted board game that opens a magical portal to a
jungle universe. Two young children discover the game
in an abandoned home and suddenly are greeted by
an adult who has spent his life trapped inside the game
since playing it at age 12. Starring Robin Williams, Bonnie
Hunt, and Kirsten Dunst. The 1995 film is rated PG and
runs 104 minutes. Free admission, donations accepted
at the door to help support the programs of the Dogwood

The Dogwood Center Summer Youth Theater will
present the classic story, “A Little Princess” on Friday,
July 25 and Saturday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m.! “A Little
Princess” is a 1905 children’s classic written by Frances
Hodgson Burnett. This program is funded by a Fremont
Area Community Foundation Summer Youth Initiative

An evening

bluegrass,
and acoustic
swing that is
sure to be a
fun night out! The Journeymen is a trio of
hand-selected super-pickers from Michigan
and Oregon. On guitar and banjo is Luke
Gitchel. Luke has previously found fame on
the stage of Dolly Parton’s amusement park,
Dixie Stampede, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
On mandolin, Brian Oberlin travels the world
as a mandolinist with several different bands
and orchestras. He is also the founder of the
River of the West Mandolin Camp and the
Oregon Mandolin Orchestra. Seth Sutton
plays the stand-up bass and is the leader of
Michigan’s premier swing band, The Midnight
Cattle Callers.

Grand Rapids Accordion Ensemble
The Grand Rapids Accordion Ensemble was
founded in early 1991 by Ray Tomaszewski,
a talented accordionist whose aim was
the promotion and preservation of quality
accordion learning and performance. With
Dr. Jon Nichols as conductor, the 42 member
ensemble meets for rehearsal each week
and is in great demand of area performances!
The program for the evening will include
patriotic and well known marches and polkas
plus much, much more! Come out for a great
evening with favorites like Edelweiss from
Sound of Music and selections from My Fair

Open Auditions for
“Monsterpiece Theater”
Calling all Monsters! If you’re between the
ages of 8-13, you are invited to invade the
Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts this
Fall! “Monsterpiece Theater” is a fun filled
youth theater program where you’ll learn
skills in acting, mime, juggling, acrobatics and
very cool blacklight illusions. Local performer
Mat Emerick is the director... or “monster
maker” as he likes to call it. An open call
will be held at the Dogwood on Thursday,
September 4 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. with
weekly Thursday night practices after that.
The program concludes with a very funny,
family friendly Halloween show on Nov. 1.
No blood or gore, “Monsterpiece Theater”
is a masterpiece of spooky, kooky skits and
music!

Learn the art of mat cutting for your own use or to prepare a gift for a special person. In this workshop you
will learn about mat selection, how to properly measure, cut and mount your work, and assemble your
frame. Each participant should bring an 8”x10” piece
of art or photograph (slightly smaller is fine) to frame.
On the first day we will discuss materials, equipment,
and mat selection. The second day we will cut mats

each participant will learn to strip the bark and then

Clay, architecture, colorful glazes and a skilled
instructor - these are the perfect elements required
for an interesting class. Join art instructor Kathy
Richmond in creating miniature clay houses filled with
interesting textures and architectural details. Houses
are constructed from rolled slabs of clay and then
the fun begins - shingles, shutters, arched doorways,
textured chimneys. The combinations are endless.
Your completed house could be filled with a tea light,
placed in the garden or become a conversation piece

scarves. This style of scarf is a giant loop of silk that
can be layered and draped around the neck. Choose

Sandy creates the most amazing hand painted and free
stitched quilts that look like intricate zentangle designs.
They are pure creativity. Each participant will complete
a 16”x16” quilt perfect for becoming a wall hanging or
pillow top. Participants should be experienced machine
quilters, bring their own free motion sewing machines
with darning or open toe foot. All other materials
provided. Please arrive early enough to set up your
sewing machine.

Marbled Paper Workshop

Marbling is a technique used for decorating paper
and other surfaces by floating acrylic paint on water
and then gently placing a specially treated paper on
the water to pull a print of the floating paint. Marbled
paper has traditionally been used as endpaper in books
and can also be used in any paper project requiring
unique design. In this class participants will learn the
basics of marbling and then create patterns and colors
on as many sheets of paper as time allows. All the
information will be given to continue marbling at home.
Bring a lunch. Class size limited to 8 people. Check

Winter, spring, summer, and fall. In this class we will use
the changing seasons to inspire us as we learn about
colors and composition. Students will be capturing the
unique images of each of the seasons such as an autumn
tree or a summer boat trip using a variety of materials and
skill building techniques. Come and explore the beautiful
world that surrounds us.

world. Each day will be spent exploring the art and culture

with us this summer to learn about the art of ancient
Egypt. Imagine exploring the tombs of King Tut, traveling
down the Nile River, and taking a desert camel ride past
the great pyramids. All these experiences will seem to
come true as you create paintings, prints, drawings,
collages and assemblages.

three dimensional clay sculptures, reduction printmaking,
painting and collage to capture the wonder of the great
outdoors.

Come and explore the outdoor world around us through
the use of creative art materials and techniques. Use clay
to make a sculpture of the land from a bird’s eye view,

How do artists plan their art work? Are there rules of
design? In this class you will learn some of the design
principles such as center of interest, movement, repetition,
variety, balance and unity. Next, you will use these design
principles and some interesting art materials to make
your own amazing art pieces. How about junk painting on
canvas, painting with dots or colorful printmaking? You will
soon be thinking and creating like an artist.

There are many different drawing techniques such as
capturing light and shadow using a light source, using contour
line drawing and adding texture. This is a perfect opportunity to

Experienced Photographer Paul Petersen will guide students
through all of the workings of a digital camera and then take
students outdoors to try some of the different camera settings.
The second day they will focus on macro settings and the rule
of thirds. The final day will be spent in a class critique of their
work and learning how to mat their best photograph.

New for the summer months is a family art experience.
Gather a few family members and come to the
NCCA-Artsplace for an evening of fun and creativity.

Collage can be an exciting media. This project will
involve paint, sticks, photos, beads, and more as each
person develops their own design on an 8” x 8” canvas
board. When the design is complete the NCCA staff will
seal it with a poured acrylic coating. It will be available
for pick up after August 4.

Using interesting scraps of wood, wire, buttons, natural
stains and assorted junk each person will construct
a sculpture of a person using dowels to join all the
pieces. This sculpture could be mounted in a block
of wood or hung on the wall. Feel free to bring old
buttons, knobs, keys, foreign coins to add interest to
your pieces.

fun painting ceramics using our bright glazes, stamps,
stencils, underglaze pencils, and great idea starters! We’ll
get you all set up to have fun painting. Pricing includes all
glazes, firing and as much time as you need! Call ahead
for groups of 6 or more. This is also a great birthday party
idea.

Fremont Public Schools are cancelled

Payment: Payment is due in full one
week before the first class session.
Payment will secure a place in the class.
Additional spots in the class will be available on a first come, first served basis.
Refunds: Refunds (less a $5.00
processing fee) will be given only when
a registrant withdraws from a class 48
hours prior to the first class session.
NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN AFTER THE 48 HOUR ADVANCED
DEADLINE. There are no refunds for
missed classes.
Cancellations: The NCCAArtsplace reserves the right to cancel
any class when there is insufficient enrollment. Registrants will be notified and
will receive a full refund. Registrants will
be notified at least 48 hours prior to the
first class session if class is cancelled
