Ware boys lacrosse wins two of three
The Ware Academy boys’
lacrosse team opened its fourth
season of play on the road at
Nansemond Suffolk Academy
early last week. The Waves had
a slow start and fell behind 9-0
in the first half.
The second half of the contest
opened with a quick Ware goal
by Matthew Carmine on a feed
from Jeremy Herrin. Better
play ensued with goals by Kyle
Blankenship and Hill Fleet.
However, Nansemond Suffolk was able to net an additional four goals during the
second half, despite a phenomenal first-time effort in goal by
Jack Elkin.
Despite the 13-3 score at the
end of the game, the Waves
showed tremendous promise for their first game of the
season.
The Waves traveled to
Fredericksburg Academy just
48 hours later in cold, damp
conditions. Again, after finding
themselves in a 2-0 hole, the
Waves got on the board with
a goal by Blankenship. With
just six seconds to play in the
second quarter, midfielder Hill
Fleet beat several Falcons to
knot the game at 2-2.
Ware struck with a vengeance
in the third quarter, taking a 7-2
lead on goals by Herrin (2),
Patrick Murphy (2) and Calvin
Fluhr. Blankenship scored the

final goal of the game late in the
fourth quarter, making the final
score 8-2. Nick Ledbetter led
the defense with a very strong
performance.
Under blue skies and mid60s temperatures, the Waves’
home opener against Hanover
Lacrosse Club featured, for
the first time, an elementary
school-level match. Playing an
experienced, talented Hanover
team, the Ware “JV” fell 11-0,
despite a great first-ever effort.
In the second game of the
doubleheader, the Waves varsity squad started slow, but soon
shook off the dust and opened
up a 5-3 lead by half time on
goals by Murphy, Herrin (2),
Brendan McCarthy and Chris
Fluhr.
The Waves continued to
play solid lacrosse through the
middle of the fourth quarter,
controlling the ball and running
a well-oiled offense. Additional
goals were scored by Matthew
Carmine, Brett Pausic, and
Murphy.
Late in the fourth quarter, the
Waves gave up four quick goals
in the final minutes of the contest. Fortunately, Ware’s offense
had tallied enough goals to
stave off a Hanover victory and
the Waves escaped with their
second win of the season, 9-7.
Waves’ goalie Jack Elkin
continued to impress the
crowd, stopping over a dozen
well-placed Hanover shots and
beginning several successful
offensive runs with his pinpoint
outlet passes.
“The team had some pretty
large shoes to fill after the
loss of several key players to
graduation,” said Ware head
coach Chris Petrone, “but we’re
making progress and improving
with every game. Several players have stepped up in a big way
and we are really encouraged
by the talent we saw in today’s
first game.”
This week, the Waves will
host the Collegiate School and
Nansemond Suffolk Academy.
Ware Academy girls impressive
The Ware Academy girls
lacrosse team opened its fourth
year of play and their 2009
season on the road last Tuesday at Nansemond-Suffolk
Academy with a dominating
13-0 victory.
The Waves wasted no time
setting the tone as Isabelle
Turner won the draw and
Kelsee Oliver netted the first
goal of the season just 24 seconds into the game.
The scoring would continue
to come at a furious pace in the
first half as Ware built a commanding 10-0 halftime lead
over the Saints. The Waves
consistently won ground balls
and quickly turned them into
offensive transition opportunities.

Ware showed no signs of
only having four practices prior
to the game as they passed the
ball with accuracy and continued to find the open player cutting to the goal.
Isabelle Turner led the scoring with four goals, and Kelsee
Oliver three goals. Caroline
Henderson added two goals
and Sarah Grace Hurley,
Macon Swartzwelder and
Kedron Walsh each netted one
goal.
The Waves defense, led by
Hurley and Caitlin Blankenship, held the Saints to just one
shot on goal for the game.
On a breezy, sunny Friday,
the Waves hosted the Cougars
of Collegiate School from
Richmond. Ware was ready for
the challenge and after each
team gave up early goals in the
opening minutes of the game.
The Waves broke open the
tie with an explosion of goals
as they took a 5-1 lead at the
end of the first half. The charge
came from another strong performance from the defense led
by Blankenship and Hurley and
goalie Allison Scribe. Scribe, a
three-year starter in the cage
for the Waves, had “an absolutely awesome performance,”
said Ware coach Andy Morgan.
“Allison was simply awesome in the cage and gave our
team tremendous confidence
throughout the game with the
saves she was making.”
Scribe finished the day with
10 saves.
Ware continued to make
impressive passes and run a
strong transition game in the
second half while adding five
more goals to cap off the 10-1
victory.
For the second straight
game midfield play by Isabelle
Turner (four goals), Kelsee
Oliver (three goals), Emily
Brown and Kedron Walsh (two
goals each) and Caroline Henderson (two assists) controlled
the tempo and possession by
winning ground balls and turning them into scoring opportunities.
The Waves will host NSA on
Thursday, April 9.

The Middlesex Sportsmen’s
Hunt Club will sponsor a family-oriented shooting sports
camp on Saturday, April 18,
at the club shooting range on

The event is targeted to
expose young shooters and
their families to the fun of
participating in the various
shooting sports, while teaching about the safe handling of
firearms on the range, in the
home, and while hunting.
Increased interest by gun
owners in the fun of organized
shooting sports such as skeet,

shotgun enthusiasts, and target
shooting with pistols, rifles
and air rifles, is on the rise.

Macie Daniel and Chloe Sabourin on defense, while the
offense was led by Tariq Wake
and Kenan Parker.
The Dano’s Pizza Dynamo

dynamic duo of Charlie and
William Revere. Defensively,
the Dynamo skated past their

from Adam Smith and Jacob
Marx. Other notable players
for the Arsenal were Caroline

The Crew also played well
throughout the game and were
led by shooting sensations Isaiah
Burse and Tucker Vanderpool,
and defensive players Kellese
Burse and William Howard.
The final match in the 6-8

Grafton sweeps MHS JVs
by Tom Chillemi
The Middlesex High JV softball team lost a doubleheader
scrimmage on Tuesday, March
31, against visiting Grafton,
11-0 and 7-0.
“Grafton had two totally different types of pitching,” said
MHS coach Bonnie Abbott.
“The first was very slow and we
could never adjust to get a bat
on it.”
In the second game, the JV
Lady Chargers could not hit the
fast pitching.
Middlesex was hampered by
defensive errors. “It was just
not our day,” said Abbott.
“Jessica Dixon did an exceptional job for us at shortstop
Chargers . . .
faking out the runner for a tag
out twice, and putting down
an exceptional drag bunt,” said
Abbott.
Catcher Bridgette Self,
and pitchers Chelsi Blake
and Rachel Crews all were
Middlesex defensive standouts.
Samantha Carlton, Joey
Stinchcomb, Chelsi Blake and
Alex Gillespie each got hits.
“If only they performed in
games like they practice,” said
Abbott. “This is a good little
team so we are expecting great
things to come.”
The JV Lady Chargers are at
West Point on Thursday, April
9; and host King William on
Thursday, April 16. Both games
are at 5 p.m.

RBIs; and Brandon Putney had
one hit and 2 RBIs.
NHS 6, Middlesex 1
Northumberland
and
Middlesex were scoreless
through 5 innings when the
Indians bats came alive. They
collected 7 of their 8 hits in the
last two innings.
Charger
pitcher
Keith
Whitley, who had held
Northumberland to one hit
in 5 innings, tired in the sixth
and NHS scored 3 earned runs
behind 2 home runs and other
hits. “They did a good job hitting balls on the outside of the
plate and driving them to the
opposite field,” said Blake.
Middlesex could not put its
11 hits together, and left 10
runners stranded on base.
For Middlesex, Fletcher was
2 for 4 and scored the only
Charger run in the seventh.
Ward was 2 for 4, Morris 2
for 4 with an RBI; Goodrich
2 for 4 with a double; Whitley
1 for 2; and Eades and Putney
each 1 for 4.
W&L 4, Lancaster 3
In the RGH consolation
game, W&L and Lancaster
were tied 3-3 in the top of the
seventh when W&L scored the
winning run.

The offensive juggernaut was
led by Jacob Beebe, JP Holman
and Reilly Price.
The Urbanna Republic Rapids
played Mathews Riverside. The
Rapids won 3-2. The team was
led by defensive standouts Cody
Rhodes and Meghan Shores,
while Wayne Taylor and Kyle
McNamee made great runs on
the goal.
The Cellular Services Galaxy
played the Mathews YMCA
Machine Tools. Although the
Galaxy fell 1-0, they played an
outstanding game. The team
was led by goaltender Larkin
Rae and defenders Kenneth
Reed and Alana Van Dyke.
The offense was led by midfielder Claire Rae and forward
Michaela Chowning.
Special thanks go to referees Stacey Moore and Michael

‘Boat Virginia’
courses offered
in Deltaville
In its ongoing efforts to
prepare local boaters for the
mandatory safety certification
requirement, the Rappahannock
Sail and Power Squadron will
offer two opportunities in April
to take the “Boat Virginia”
course.
The course provides important knowledge for both new
and experienced boaters—sail
and power. Within the next
few years every boat operator
on Virginia waters must show
evidence of having completed
this training. Now is a good
time to get certification. There
is no charge for the course.
A Monday evening class will
be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on
April 13, 20, and 27. The other
option is a Saturday class, April
18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Both
classes will take place in the
Power Squadron’s Cole Training Center on Ball Park Road
in Deltaville.
Neither ownership of a boat
nor boating experience are
required. The classes are enjoyable and informal, and personal
“sea stories” are welcome.
Membership in the squadron
is open to all who are interested
in boating. Members enjoy
many benefits, such as access to
advanced training, discounts at
several suppliers, and monthly
dinner meetings.
To inquire about the classes
or to register, contact Captain
Bill Crump at 776-7518 or captaincrump@aol.com.
Moore stars as
Legends win
softball titles
The 12 Virginia Legends
fastpitch softball team captured
two titles in the first two tournaments of its spring season.
The Legends traveled to
Charlottesville March 21-22
for the NSA Battle of the Hill,
and captured the first place
trophy with six straight wins.
They repeated the feat this
past weekend at Stoney Run,
defeating Orion Hunter 4-3 in
the championship game to win
the USSSA Bring it On tournament.
Members of the Virginia
Legends 12U team hail from
Suffolk,
Virginia
Beach,
Chesapeake, Newport News,
Yorktown, Poquoson, and also
include Quinlan Moore of
Deltaville.
Moore went 7 for 11 at the
plate for the weekend and made
several game-saving catches
in the outfield during the title
game. She is the daughter of
Steve and Nancy Moore of
Deltaville.

MHS students roll a strike
JV booters
rout Raiders
for 4th win
The Middlesex High varsity
and JV soccer teams visited
Rappahannock on April 3.
The Charger JVs (4-1-1)
started slow and the first half
ended in a scoreless tie.
In the second half, the JV
Chargers scored quickly and
scored plenty. John Shaw
started off the action with the
first goal of the match off a
corner kick. With the wind in
the goal keeper’s face, and the
bend of the ball from Shaw, the
ball drifted neatly into the net.
The second MHS goal came
on a one-on-one opportunity
that was converted by Darrien
Fisher.
The third MHS goal was
guided into the net off of the
head of Fisher after Shaw had
placed the ball near post for
Fisher to finish.
Ivy Perkins and JD Diggs
recorded their second goals of
the season off a one-on-one
and header, respectively, for
the fourth and fifth goals of the
match as the JV Chargers won
5-0.
The varsity Chargers (1-4-1)
went into the game with very
high emotions and played with
a lot of energy at the beginning
of the first half. Rappahannock
was able to grab the momentum
by scoring two goals in the first
half en route to a 4-0 win.
The Chargers fought back
hard with some outstanding
defense and distribution from
Carlos Gonzalez, Mario Kieselbach and Lauren Bebee,
and the midfield play of Owen
Holt, Clayton Colley and Stanley Redmon.
The Chargers offense was
sparked by the dynamic sprinting ability of Chris Brooks.
Both of the Charger squads
take the field after spring break
on April 20 at home against
Essex.

Opening-day results of the
Piankatank Ladies Golf Association are as follows:
1st place: Ann Stanley,
Bonnie Norton, Gail Aines—

2nd place: Carole Lloyd,

Sue Silberhorn—69.
3rd place: Mary Francisco,

The sounds of rolling bowling
balls and pins crashing filled the
air as more than 80 Middlesex
High students participated April
3 at Village Lanes in Gloucester
for an evening of bowling hosted
by the MHS Band Booster Association (BBA).
Other activities included the
“Board Room,” where students
competed with each other at
various board games, cards and
Guitar Hero.
Band director Justin Ranson
presented awards and special
recognitions to various students
for their accomplishments in the
music department.
The MHS BBA described the
event as a “huge success. We are
considering making it an annual
event,” said a BBA spokesperson. “We never attempted this
type of event in the past, and
we were pleased with the support and happiness of the students who had a fun and safe
night of activities. All proceeds
will directly benefit the music
department.”
Lady Chargers host
West Point today
Meagan Payne pitched a twohitter and Middlesex collected
14 hits as the Lady Chargers
crushed home-standing Colonial Beach 15-0 in their Tidewater District varsity softball
opener Tuesday.
Payne struck out 9 in the fiveinning game and had a double
at the plate.
Ashley Williams added a
single and double to the MHS
attack; Raquel Pierce and
Heather Blankenship each had
two singles; Katherine Wood
and Chelsea Lewter each had
a double; and Whitney Walton,
Amanda Brown, Ashley Lane
and Danielle Montgomery contributed a single apiece.
Last week, the Lady Chargers (1-0, 2-2) lost twice to
Lancaster, 5-0 and 7-0. MHS
had only 4 hits in the two losses
and faded in the late innings.
“We have to concentrate on the
later innings,” said MHS coach
Wade Traynham. “We did a
great job of this against Colonial Beach.”
Middlesex will host West
Point today, April 9, at 5 p.m.
at MHS, and will play at King
William on April 16.
Smith leads MHS trackmen
The Middlesex High School
varsity boys track team scored
20 points in the West Point
Invitational on Saturday.
The Chargers were paced by
Dale Smith who finished third
in the triple jump (39’1/2”) and
third in the 300 intermediate
hurdles (44.15). Markus Hammond finished third in the high
jump (5’8”) and eighth in the
200 meters (24.33).
Others to place were Kevin
Walsh, eighth, 1,600 meters
(5:39); Brian Engle, seventh,
triple jump (37’11”); and
Jeremy Rich, fifth, high hurdles
(20.48), and seventh in the 400
meters (58.92).
The Chargers will compete
in the King William Invitational on Saturday, April 18.

Recruiter gives students tips on landing ‘The’ job
Robin Epps, a recruiter with
Medical Careers Institute (MCI)
in Newport News, gave a presentation on interviewing skills
and resumes to three classes of
juniors and seniors on March 9
at Middlesex High School.
She gave the students valuable information on medical
careers as well as other jobs
available and corresponding
courses in technology, some of
which are offered through her
two-year college.
Epps also spoke of her reallife experiences as an Army
retiree. She offered students
pertinent information that all
should know as they will soon
be headed to college, a trade
school, or out into the work
world. She emphasized that not
all students are going to a fouryear institution, and yet all need
to know how to obtain “The”
job, as she put it.
A perfect resume is essential,
according to Epps. Proofread
and do not have any spelling
errors, she said. It is important
to keep the resume formal and
brief. Have at least 10 copies in
hand as you head to the interview. She reviewed the look of
the professional resume that a
student should present.
Interaction with the students
occurred as Epps showed each
group how to use one of the
instruments required on the
job as a physical therapy assistant. She noted that in that particular job one could earn up to
appropriately for the interview,
including suit and tie for men
and dress, suit, or pants suit for
ladies. “Wear a watch,” she said,
as it is an indicator to your prospective employer that you are
a person who cares and will be
on time for work and appointments.

$92,000. She said the courses
are intense and run between
14-18 months, but the work
is rewarding. Also, jobs in the
medical field are available in
our current economy and will be
available as these students seek
jobs in the next year or two.
Epps particularly stressed
preparation and promptness as
key to landing “The” job that
one wants. She said to have at
least three questions ready for
the interviewer after he/she has
asked questions. Research the
company for which you want
to work, and let them know you
are serious about the job. Be
ahead of time for an interview.
“The 10-minute rule” is important, she noted, as one should
not arrive at 9 a.m. for an interview at 9 a.m., but arrive at least
10 minutes ahead, as there will
be paperwork to fill out beforehand, and “There are all kinds
of spies out there,” she said.

Middlesex Class of 2011
cleans portion of Route 17
If Route 17 between Hardee’s
and Food Lion looks a little
cleaner, thank members of the
Middlesex High School Class
of 2011.
Last Saturday afternoon,
members of the class picked
up litter and other items from
the highway and placed them in
bright orange bags for VDOT
to pick up. Class vice president
Morgan Stewart said, “I can’t
believe people throw all this
stuff out their car windows.”
This was the first of eight
planned pick-ups by the class.
Participation was light because
of the track meet in West Point,
Little League baseball, and
other commitments by members of the class.
Participating were McKenna
Millington, Morgan Stewart,
John Walsh and Kevin Walsh.
They were helped by Chuck
MHS students McKenna Millington and Morgan Stewart
in their stylish orange vests
on Route 17.
Walsh and class sponsor Carl
McWhorter.
The next cleanup will be on
Saturday, June 6.

C&F announces promotions farm service news
-
Acreage reporting time will
soon be here. Filing an accurate acreage report for all crops
and land uses, including failed
acreage and prevented planting
acreage, can prevent the loss
of benefits for a variety of programs.
Failed acreage must be
reported within 15 days of the
disaster event and before disposition of the crop. Prevented
planting must be reported no
later than 15 days after the final
planting date.
Acreage reports are required
for many Farm Service Agency
programs.
For crops other than NAP
(Noninsured Crop Disaster
Assistance Program) crops,
acreage reports are to be certified by the June 1 deadline on
small grains and a July 15 deadline on all other crops.
Acreage reports on crops for
which NAP assistance may be
paid are due in the county office
in accordance with the NAP
contract.
The Average Crop Revenue
Election (ACRE) is a new program authorized by the 2008
Farm Bill that begins in crop
year 2009. Through ACRE,
USDA’s Farm Service Agency
(FSA) offers producers an alternative to Direct and Countercyclical (DCP) payments. The
ACRE alternative provides
eligible producers a state-level
revenue guarantee based on the
5-year state Olympic average
yield and the 2-year national
average price.
ACRE payments are made
when both state- and farm-level
triggers are met. By participating in ACRE, producers elect
to forego counter-cyclical payments. Producers also elect to
receive a 20-percent reduction
in direct payments and a 30-percent reduction in loan rates.
ACRE sign-up dates will be
announced soon. Producers can
choose to participate in ACRE
or stay with DCP.
A decision to elect ACRE
binds the producer to the program through the 2012 crop
year. For more details, contact
Gloucester FSA at 693-2691.

EVB and First Capital Bancorp to merge
Eastern Virginia Bankshares Inc. (EVBS) and First
Capital Bancorp Inc. (FCVA)
announced the signing of a
merger agreement on Friday.
According to a press release
from the banks, the merger
“will result in a strategic alliance between the two banks
and will build on each other’s
strengths, increase service to
customers and pave the way for
future growth.”
Under the agreement, First
Capital common stockholders
will receive 0.98 shares of Eastern Virginia for each of their
shares in First Capital, valued
at approximately $27 million as
of the close of business on April
2, 2009.
Eastern Virginia, the parent
company for EVB, with over
$1.09 billion in assets, operates 25 branches throughout the
Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula and Central Virginia.
First Capital, with over $460
million in assets, has seven
branches in the greater Richmond market.
Upon completion of the transaction, the combined bank will
have the second largest market
share of any community bank
in the Richmond area and will
be one of the 10 largest community banks headquartered in
Virginia.
The name of the holding
company and the bank will be
determined at a later date. The
bank’s headquarters will be
located in the greater Richmond
area and the company’s operations center will be located in
Tappahannock.
“This alliance is unusual in
this environment, in that it combines two solid, healthy banks
to make an even stronger financial services provider,” said Joe
A. Shearin, president and CEO
of Eastern Virginia. “EVB and
First Capital Bank have complementary strengths, and we
fully intend to take advantage
of these to provide expanded
products and services for our
customers and the communities
in which we operate.”
Shearin will remain president
and CEO of Eastern Virginia.
John M. Presley, currently managing director and CEO of First
Capital, will become managing
director and CFO of Eastern
Virginia.
W. Rand Cook will remain
chairman of the board of Eastern Virginia and Grant S. Grayson, First Capital’s current
chairman, will become vice
chairman of the board of Eastern Virginia.
Robert G. Watts Jr. will serve
as president and CEO of the
combined bank while Joseph H.
James Jr. will serve as its COO.
Watts currently serves as president and CEO of First Capital
Bank while James is currently
the COO of EVB.
“Both companies’ leadership
teams are enthusiastic about
this combination,” said Shearin.
“The combined management
team has the experience and
ability to facilitate growth in a
difficult environment.”
EVB and First Capital Bank
markets already have moved
closer together as communities
have expanded between the two
headquarters. The combined
footprint provides 32 branches
and more than 350 employees
throughout Eastern and Central
Virginia with limited branch
overlap.
The pro forma company will
have approximately $1.5 billion
in combined assets, approximately $1.2 billion in deposits.
The companies expect to
complete the transaction by
year end, subject to shareholder
and regulatory approvals.
