Speed Dial--Brazile and Dial It Fast victorious at San Antonio
By Tanya Randall
“Thank God for blessing me with this horse and this moment,”
stated a still stunned Shada Brazile of her horse Dial It Fast two
days after her $16,866.25 victory at the $124,450 San Antonio Rodeo, held Feb. 7-23 at the AT&T Center.
The mother of two—Treston, 5, and Style, 2—and wife of
all-around legend Trevor Brazile came from behind to win the
championship, which was determined by money won, by a mere
$163.75 over 2010 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Sydni
Blanchard and her super mare Pure Victory Dash.
From the very beginning Brazile, Decatur, Texas, was just happy
to be there at the limited-entry rodeo.
“I was comfortable the whole time, knowing what a big opportunity it was to even be there and feeling blessed to have the
opportunity to run at San Antonio,” said Brazile, who is sponsored
by Wrangler—she was in California for a photo shoot at the time
of this interview--and Relentless brand products. “My horse was
feeling good the whole time. He was real consistent. He ran strong.
When someone hollered my name I thought they were mispronouncing Sydni’s name. She made a really good runs in the finals.
She stayed strong the whole time too. I just luckily edged her out.”
The 50 contestants ran in five sets of three rounds with the top
money winners from each set advancing to a two, two-go semifinals. The top 10 making into the Finals were Blanchard, who had

Courtney Duncan and Ms Perky Bug set new world record at 16.5
By Julie Mankin
The time may have been announced in another language, but the
outcome was the same – a new world record in barrel racing. It happened on Feb. 23 when a big, 9-year-old mare ridden by a 23-yearold American barrel racer in Brazil clocked a 16.586 on a standard
WPRA pattern.
The race was part of the West Regional Championships held at
Haras Rapheala in Porto Feliz, Sao Paulo. More than 1,300 fans
attended the competition, which helped open the 5th Grand Prix
Armand – the largest barrel race in Latin America.
“I am so thankful to God for this blessing,” said rider Courtney
Duncan. “It’s only through Him that this was possible.”
Duncan grew up in west Texas, where she learned to barrel race
at 8 years old and was mentored primarily by Latricia Duke, who
also has West-Texas roots.
“My high school rodeo horse that taught me what ‘fast’ feels like
was Sugs Calico Dreamer, a Paint gelding that Latricia trained and
took to futurities,” said Duncan.
Duncan’s father, Dale Rankin, once helped a pair of Brazilians
named Paulo Dedemo and Fernando Costa buy a Paint racing stallion named Cherokee Indian. Then in 2007, when Courtney was in
college at Texas Tech University (also her father’s alma mater), her
father arranged an internship for her on equine embryo transfer
with his Brazilian friends.
Duncan lived with the Costa family for six months while studying embryo transfer at the Haras ZD Ranch owned by Dedemo. It
wasn’t all work and no play, however. Duncan also found time for
barrel racing. She won the 2007 ABQM (Brazil’s AQHA) National
Finals on a Haras ZD mare named Bella Trouble.
Afterward, Costa decided to start a new barrel-racing reproduction and training facility, which he partnered on with Rankin. They
established Rancho Colina Real, where they raise performance
horses by Dashing Is Easy (standing currently at Vera Cruz SP
Brazil) and Phoebe’s Cartel.
In Brazilian, Colina Real means “real hill” and it’s a beautiful barn
with a state-of-the-art biotechnology lab situated in Vera Cruz, near
São Paulo. When the Rankin family purchased Ms Perky Bug in

the 1st episode will air Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 8:30 pm Central Time.

Future Fortunes Announces Sire’s Slots
Sire’s Slots in conjunction with BFA World Champion Futurity!
In 2003, when Future Fortunes was just beginning, no one ever
imagined what it would grow into. As we head into our 10 year
Birthday Celebration, we wanted to do something very special. We
have come up with it, SIRES’ SLOTS! We believe this race is going
to be a phenomenal marketing tool for our Stallion Owners!
SIRES’ SLOTS is for 2013 FF Stallions only. If a Stallion was
deceased while enrolled in FF, his foals are still eligible as long as
the Stallion Owner is still enrolled. Stallion Owner does not have
to own the horse. Check is written to Stallion Owner. If Stallion
Owner does not make nomination payment by February 15, 2013,
the slot will be available on a first request basis to an Owner of Stallion’s foal. Check will then be written to OWNER of horse at time
of Slot race.
What is SIRES’ SLOTS?
• It is a side pot that will run in the two long goes at the BFA World
Championship in 2013. With over 400 entries in the Juvenile and
over 400 entries in the Open Futurity, this is the perfect event to
host this race. A 5 year old Futurity horse can make this event their
1st competition run since it is after December 1st of their Futurity
year or enter the Derby their 5 year old year.
• Each Stallion can choose 2 horses that are entered in the Juvenile
and/or the Open that he has sired. 1st payment of $250 per horse
must be paid by February 15, 2013 to be eligible. Horse must be
named by October 15, 2013. If named horse is scratched from the
race, another horse can be picked by December 1, 2013. Horse will
go with whoever names the horse first.
• Payback will be determined by a 2 run average. Horses that run 4
tenths off rarely draw a paycheck - but run 4 tenths off both goes
and it could win the average! This would be a great race to reward
those good, consistent horses!
• Freshman Sire Incentive. If your Stallion has never had a horse
compete in the race at the BFA World Championship, he would
be considered a Freshman Sire. If a horse ran in Juvenile but not
Open, then Stallion is still considered a Freshman Sire for Open
and vice versa. This Bonus is paid to Stallion owner only.
We are offering SIRES’ SLOTS for both the Juvenile and Open
Futurities at the BFA World Championship. If the Stallion Owner
buys the Slot, that Stallion Owner can decide what is paid to the
Owner of the horse.
Call 405-365-7415 for your SIRES’ SLOT Invitation!

dominated the rodeo to that point with an arena record of 13.68
and $7,368.75 won in the rounds, Angie Meadors on Frenchmans
Flirt, Lindsay Sears on Sugar Moon Express, Sabrina Ketchem on
Swivel Ta Fame, Kelli Tolbert on RF Firefly, Fallon Taylor on Flos
Heiress, Kaley Bass on Wonders Cowboy Dan, Brazile, Jean Winters
and Crickets Peppy Zan, and Randa Kellogg and Zaks Okie Ree.
Brazile and Dial It Fast (“Big Boy” or “Dial It”) were first out in
the Finals and her husband gave her a pep talk before her run.
She said, “He told me right before the short round that ‘I’ve won
here and I’ve lost here, and at the end of day we’re okay. The only
thing you’ll regret is if you don’t try your hardest.’ Then he looked
at me and said, ‘And, your horse is good enough.’ That just gave me
a lot of confidence for him to come over and believe in me.”
Brazile and Dial It, a 7-year-old gelding by Dashin Is Easy out
of the Easy Jet mare, Dial It In, turned in the only sub 14-second
run of the Finals to claim the championship. Incidentally, it was the
second straight barrel racing title won by a horse trained by Latricia
Duke, Millican, Texas. Last year, Angie Meadors won the title
aboard Hesa Bug Leo, also trained and futuritied by Duke.
Brazile owes Brittany Pozzi, who also has a World Championship with the Duke-trained Yeah Hes Firen, a debt of gratitude for
pairing her with Dial It a little over a year ago. Pozzi was riding the
gelding for Trip duPier and had him in the trailer with her when she
stayed with the Brazile’s for the Fort Worth rodeo.
“It was kind of one of those things that were meant to be,” said
Brazile. “I had lost two horses in two days last January the week
before Brittany came to stay with us at our place. One got crippled
out in the pasture and the other got salmonella. They were younger
horses, but they were coming along really nice and I was ready to
go on one of them. After that I was bummed a little bit, but at the
same time I just had to trust that God had a plan.
“I didn’t even want a horse at the time that Brittany had Dial It
at our place. She told me about him and I said I didn’t want to try

anything right now. She went home and came back for the short
round. She called me before she left and asked him if I wanted her
to throw Dial It on the trailer and that I could just ride him at the
house. I was like well, if you’re going to bring him to me, I’ll ride
him, but I still wasn’t really gung ho about it.
“I got on him and fell in love with him the first time I rode him
around. I don’t even think I loped the pattern; I just knew deep
down inside this was my horse.”
Brazile spent last year seasoning Dial It to rodeo life.
“We did a lot of seasoning last year,” said Brazile, who qualified for the Calgary Stampede as the leader of the WPRA Tour
Standings last year. “We had our ups and downs. It would be real
good one week and bad the next. We worked through a lot. He was
scared of bulls and things like that, the typical young horse stuff
that you work through. I never lost faith in him.”

Adding a barrel horse to Trevor Brazile’s gold buckle express
had/has its challenges though.
“He works three events and he normally likes one to two horses
per event, especially the heading,” she noted. “He made adjustments
and let me throw a horse in the trailer. There were a few times that we
had to have two rigs. Doing four events at a rodeo as a family is a lot.
The last thing I wanted to do was do something that jeopardized his
goals. He was very gracious and he made it all work. It takes a lot of
help to get down the road with all the horses and kids.”
Brazile got off to a slow start in January to due to an injury to
Dial It’s knee back in November.
“He cut his knee open—nothing major—but they take time to
heal,” she noted. “I hadn’t run him in four months and the first
place I took him to was Denver. We weren’t so good there. It took
us a few runs to get our timing back.”
Brazile also made a headgear change, switching from a bonnet
and Martha Josey Million Dollar Bit to a tiedown and Molly Powell
Smooth Run.
At the first of February, Brazile and Dial It won the pro rodeo in
Belton.
“He felt really good at Belton, but he felt amazing at (San) Angelo,” she said. “We ran at the bottom of the ground and we got the
first barrel and I just coasted him through and we still would have
placed, but I got real excited after that because I figured out what
I did. I didn’t trust him going to the first barrel, so at San Antonio,
going down the alleyway I just told myself to trust him that he was
going to work.”
That trust put her in the Top 15 in the World Standings.

New World Record Continued From Page 1
2009 from trainer Lanita (Powers) Peirce through Bo Hill, the mare
had already earned nearly $20,000 at futurities and derbies. The following year, “Perky” was sent to Brazil.
“I was still in college then, so Paulo Sergio Araujo competed on
her and won $5,000 with a 17.259 on a standard pattern,” said Duncan. “That’s when we knew she could compete and win in Brazil.”
Upon Courtney’s 2012 graduation from Texas Tech with a degree in
Multidisciplinary Science Education, she and her husband, Joshua
Duncan, moved to Brazil to train and compete for Rancho Colina
Real.
“In September of 2011, I traveled to Brazil to run at a really big
race,” said Courtney. “It was my first time to ever compete on Ms
Perky Bug. I told Fernando after we ran that I thought Perky could
break the world record with a 16.5. I was sort of kidding then,
because that time sounds so absurdly fast. But in the back of my
mind, I really thought she could do it.”
Back in December, Courtney had already clocked a 17.105 on
Perky in an outdoor pen with deep ground. The same weekend,
she’d also won a motorcycle by clocking a 17.245 to win a race with
a 17.4.
On Feb. 23, she bested that by nearly a second.
“I barely remember anything about the run; it was so fast!” said
Duncan. “Most of what I remember comes from watching videos
of it. I knew Perky was running hard to first, and after we turned
third, I thought, ‘Phew, we made a clean run’ and everything in
between is a bit of a blur.
“As we ran home, I actually had my eyes shut tight because I was
riding so hard. It was only after we passed the timer that I looked
up and saw my time. When I saw the clock, I knew that Ms Perky
Bug had outrun Nicole Aichele and Biankus French Girl’s 16.643.
As much as I hate to cry, I began bawling like a 2-year-old kid. I was
truly overwhelmed by the goodness of God.”
Duncan gives most of the credit for the record-breaking run
to God and her “amazing family; loving and supportive husband;
fantastic team at Rancho Colina Royal; and the truly magnificent Ms
Perky Bug.”

She’s also quick to commend Peirce.
“Lanita trained and competed on most of Ms Wahini Bugs’ offspring and every single one has done well,” said Duncan.
Indeed, seven or eight have been outstanding. Get of Ms Wahini
Bug have earned more than $500,000 on the cloverleaf pattern,
including Wahini Cash ($146,359), Famous Bugs ($49,844), and Ms
Shoo Bugs ($48,069).
It was back when Peirce’s then-husband, Marty Powers, was
working for Ralph Shebester that the amazing maternal line fell into
her hands. Shebester owned Bugs Alive In 75, and soon Lanita was
managing the sire’s talented daughter, Ms Wahini Bug, for Ralph’s
daughter, Mary Watkins. That relationship is still going strong after
27 years.

Ms Wahini Bug won on the track and on the barrels at futurities, derbies and rodeos once Lanita stepped aboard. And her own
dam, Wahini, is one of the all-time leading dams of winning barrel
horses, as well as a multiple ROM/AAA producer. Another of Wahini’s get, Wahini Cash, took Lanita to more than $100,000 in rodeo
earnings.
Peirce trains her horses with a method, but said Perky tended to
straighten up just a little quicker leaving the turn than Wahini Cash,
which is part of what makes the black mare so fast.
“She’s a real eye-catcher, conformation-wise,” said Perky’s trainer.
“She’s very athletic and was doing awesome at 3 years old. When I
started her, I lived across the road from Billy Etbauer and his wife,
Holly, was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that mare is unbelievable.’ They had
this big arena that was like two acres and the barrels were way off
the fences.
“That mare just put herself in the right place,” explained Peirce,
who’s remarried now and lives in Miami, Texas. “She reminded me
of Wahini Bug – a full brother to Ms Wahini Bug – that was the
best horse I ever rode probably. He had that same gift of judging;
of being in the right place, and the arena didn’t matter. He won
second at Cheyenne with me, and outran them at Lincoln, Neb.,
with an 11.9. Not very many horses can do that. I’m pretty sure that
mare, can, too.”
This spring, Peirce is running a 5-year-old half-brother to Perky
by Blazin Jetolena at the futurities. Later she also hopes to bring
back from injury a full sister to Wahini Cash by Takin On The Cash.
She has all of Mrs. Watkins’ mares now, including 29-year-old Ms
Wahini Bug, who seems finally to be done having babies.
Of course, Perky also carries the blood – and black color – of
her sire, Dash For Perks – the decade’s No. 2 sire of barrel horses
to have earned more than $50,000. Thus, her other half-siblings in-
clude Mary Walkers World Champion Perculatin (Latte), Lady Perks
(winner of nearly a quarter-million dollars in Canada and three-time
champion at the Ponoka Stampede); IBRA champions and bigmoney earners Cash On Perks and Winning Perks; and Fancy Man
Perks (who qualified PJ Burger for the NFR and earned another
$40,000 at jackpots in 2008).

UNOFFICIAL: Top 10 Fastest Times
Compiled by the Barrel Racing Report
When a barrel racer scorches 16.586 on a standard pattern, it is
bound to get everyone remembering the fastest times they have
seen or heard of. In an effort to keep some historical reference of
those great runs we have put together an Unofficial List of the
Top 10 All Time Standard Pattern Times to best of our knowledge
and research.
Of course in barrel racing, since there is no one governing body
and no one official traveling to verify patterns, we cannot declare
these as official so they are unofficial. We like to use them as a way
of remembering the history of barrel racing as we move forward.
The conditions of barrel racing make it very difficult to keep any
standardized records but we hope people will enjoy looking at these
historically great runs.
Most of the runs are available on youtube.com and there is no
arguing they are all great runs. We are researching a couple of other
runs as well but if you know of a run that belongs on this list or
have information, just email us at info@barrelracingreport.com and
we will look into it. We hope that you will all help us keep a fun list
to recognize some of the great runs in barrel racing history.
Next week, we will bring an un Unofficial Top 10 Times on a
Standard Pattern from Brazil with the help of a few friends in Brazil.

Walker banks almost $15K at San Angelo
By Julie Mankin
She often says that Latte just keeps getting better, and it’s hard to
argue with Mary Walker.
The defending world champion barrel racer rode Perculatin
(“Latte”) to sixth in the first round at San Angelo, Texas, then came
back to win both the second and short rounds; thus nailing down
the average title by nearly a half-second on three runs.
The hefty paycheck of $14,593 pushed her all the way to the top
– just $152 from reclaiming the No. 1 spot in the world standings
over Jane Melby, who won Denver and placed third at Fort Worth.
As for Walker, it’s been a heckuva February. The only rodeo
where she hasn’t earned money was her virtual hometown rodeo,
Fort Worth, and that fact makes her “so mad.” Before raking in so
much dough at San Angelo, she’d placed at San Antonio ($3,931),
Jackson ($1,257), Kissimmee ($2,034), Okeechobee ($1,953), and
Rapid City ($1,455).
That last win came aboard Walker’s new backup horse, Tonto,
which she bought from Shada Brazile after the NFR.
“I saw Shada run him at Kansas City and she placed there,” said
Walker. “She let me borrow him for a backup in Las Vegas, then let
me bring him home and try him for a while. He’s 13 and has a little
age on him, but is in good shape and is just a neat little horse.”
Tonka is registered as Friscos Col George. The double-bred Gay
Bar King gelding was raised and trained by Libby Eppenauer Swenson before Brazile bought him as a backup horse in the past year or
so.
“He’s much different than Latte – quicker and shorter,” said
Walker. “You better be on your toes to make sure you don’t fall off.
Hopefully he can help take some of the stress off Latte.”
Indeed, Walker was planning to run Tonka while Latte gets a week
off before RodeoHouston. In the meantime, she’s also been sharing
him with traveling partner Nikki Steffes. In fact, Nikki is the reason
the duo ventured out to Rapid City.
“I thought I’d have an easy winter,” said Walker. “But we went
Barrel Racing Report
to Denver for ‘Colorado versus the World,’ then to Odessa, back
to Denver, and snuck out to Rapid City, so I can mark that off my
bucket list. It was 10 below and ice and snow.”
Rapid City was a circuit rodeo for Steffes, a South Dakota native,
so that’s why they braved the cold. Later, they chose Florida over
going to Tucson, which proved to be a good call when it snowed
that week in Tucson.
“When Nikki got home from the Finals, she didn’t have a horse,”
Mary explained. “The owner of Nilla chose not to continue their
relationship, so she didn’t have anything to ride. I said, ‘You come
to Texas and stay with me and we’ll look for you something.’ I’ve
enjoyed having her down since the first of January. I’m pretty sure
her new second address is ours.”
Steffes runs Tonka when Walker doesn’t need him, and is trying
new horses in the meantime.
As for Latte, imagine what he can do with more rest. After all, 10
runs in a row in Las Vegas didn’t even faze him.
“He could have made 10 more runs in a row,” she said. “When
we got home, he actually bucked and played. He did really well out
there. He pulled a shoe in the fourth round, but my shoer happened
to be flying in anyway, thank goodness, so away we went.”
Incidentally, San Angelo is one of Walker’s favorite rodeos even
when she doesn’t make enough money there to buy a nice car. For
one thing, San Angelo doesn’t turn anyone down, so some 231 girls
were entered and got to make their first run in slack. Then the top
96 come back for the performances that make up the second round
before a Saturday afternoon short round.
“My aunt lives not far from there and she and my cousin got to
come,” said Walker. “It was really fun; I hadn’t seen them in a long
time. We have so many friends at that rodeo. It’s a circuit rodeo and
the crowd is great – I think it was sold out almost every performance. It’s just one of those rodeos where they treat you well and
we had a good time.”

Henry Gives Credit Where Credit Is Due
BRR: Tell us a little about your horse, his history and his approximate lifetime earnings.
Henry: I raised him from a baby. In fact, my daughter, Cami, gives
the barn name to all my babies when they are born and obviously
he was born on Saturday! I sold him as a 2 year old. Jen Conner had
bought him but felt like he was too big and too much horse for her.
When he was 3, I asked her if she would trade him back for another
colt the same age and she did. I am very thankful to her for trading
me back. She had him broke by Craig Brooks and he was trained for
the barrels by Byron Forehand. I also felt like he was too big and
powerful for me so I sent him to Brett Monroe to start the futurity
year. I took him home from Brett a few weeks ago to do some slow
work but had intentions of him still riding him in the futurities. I
made a really good run on him the week before Unadilla so Brett
told me that he thought I should try to run him myself. So I did!! I
would like to thank Brett for all his help with him and encouragement. I would also like to thank Byron Forehand for helping me
with him too. Appox. LTE $15,000
BRR: Tell us a little about your runs in the futurity and open.
Henry: Saturday has so much speed that he doesn’t know how to
use yet that I ride him very conservative. On the first run, I tried to
bump him down going to the first but when he hit the draw reins
he almost stopped and popped up. Then he slipped a little at the
second. He still placed 6th in the First go. The Second go I was just
hoping to make a smooth, clean run. I was shocked when I saw his
time. I rolled my time over so it ended up winning the open and
being the second fastest time of the whole weekend.
BRR: What are your plans for your horse for the rest of the year
and beyond?
Henry: I am planning on running him at the Diamonds & Dirt
Futurity and Ft. Smith. I really haven’t planned anything past that.

I don’t keep any of my horses, so I plan on selling him at the end
of the year. I have his mom that I am waiting to breed her back to
Flyin Ta Fame again and I also have his full sister that is a yearling.

“D
on’t you know that things only get worse?”
That negative statement was made by someone
who should have known better because our words are
powerful containers that carry either blessings or curses to us. Proverbs 18:21 tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue.
In Matthew 12 we are warned that by our words we are justified
and by our words we are condemned. We do get what we say so
we must be extra careful of what comes out of our mouths. Jesus
encourages us in John 16:24 to “ask and we will receive that our joy
will be complete.”
Jesus came into the world and paid for the sins of mankind so
that we might have eternal life and an “abundant” life here and now.
(John 10:10) We should praise and thank God often for His great
mercy and love in giving us this priceless gift. When we complain,
we are being ungrateful for God’s blessings.
Read 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 which tells us to rejoice always,
pray without ceasing and in everything to be thankful for this is
the will of God for us in Jesus. Things might look bad for a time,
but trust in God and He will work things out better than you can
imagine. Just keep saying what God said in the Scriptures and you
will have peace. God cannot lie so depend on His Word to bring
you through.
“Many are all the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” (Psalm 34:19) All glory and honor to
God!!
