He really, really likes it. “He’s always done well there,” said Ketcham of the 12-year-old son of all-time leading sire Dash Ta Fame out of Swivel Hips Bar, by Pivot Point. “He likes that pen a lot.” In 2011, Swivel carried Ketcham to third-place finish behind Brittany (Fleck) Diaz and Jill Moody. Diaz ended up with the title literally by a penny as the rodeo determines its champion by money won rather than total time. In 2013, an unfortunate plus-five cost Ketcham and Swivel the championship. At this year’s 50-entry, $150,000 San Antonio Rodeo, held Feb. 6-22, Ketcham and Swivel were the undisputed champions with $20,840 in earnings, nearly $4,500 more than Reserve Champion Carlee Pierce and her new ride Dash Ta Diamonds with $16,394. “He worked good,” said the 2013 National Finals Rodeo qualifier from Yeso, N.M. “I hit a barrel in the first round. They hadn’t had a concert or anything in there yet. The 2014 WPRA NFR Standings ground was pretty Unofficial as of Feb. 24, 2014 - courtesy of www.wpra.com loose, and I kind of weakened. He 1 Sabrina Ketcham $33,701 really slipped on 2 Shelly Anzick $29,279 the first barrel and 3 Shelley Morgan $26,615 I weakened there at 4 Mary Walker $23,933 the second one and 5 Lisa Lockhart $22,820 hit it, but since San 6 Carlee Pierce $22,585 Antonio doesn’t do 7 Michele McLeod $17,770 an average it didn’t 8 Fallon Taylor $15,429 really hurt me too 9 Trula Churchill $14,385 bad. 10 Britany Diaz $13,561 “I placed 11 Victoria Williams $13,109 second in the next 12 Christine Laughlin $12,744 two rounds in my 13 Ann Scott $11,330 set, and then was 14 Taylor Langdon $11,159 third in the first 15 Kimmie Wall $11,051 semifinals and won 16 Christy Loflin $11,036 the second semifi17 Jane Melby $10,366 nals, so I placed in 18 Sammi Bessert $10,325 every round except 19 Andrea Cline $9,845 that first one. So, 20 Kenna Squires $9,681 I had a decent First Down Dash si 105 Dash Ta Fame si 113 Sudden Fame si 98 Swivel Ta Fame si 70 2002 Chestnut Gelding Pivot Point si 102 Swivel Hips Bar si 112 Miss Moolah Bar Dash For Cash 114 si First Prize Rose si 98 Tiny’s Gay si 106 Bar Dearie si 90 Easy Jet si 100 Fiesta Date tb Moolah Bux tb Miss Baldy’s Bar Rider/Owner: Sabrina Ketcham; Breeder: MJ Farms amount of money going in (to the finals).” Ketcham and Swivel went into their final run in third place with $8,432. Christine Laughlin, who split saddle time between Guys Six Pack To Go and Peppy Colonel Tivio, led the field with $9,893, while Sydni Blanchard and Pure Victory Dash were second with $9,043. Their fastest time of the rodeo, a 13.80, gave Ketchem and Swivel the round win and a victory-clenching $12,408 first-place check. The San Antonio Championship also moved the duo into the No. 1 spot in the WPRA World Standings with $33,701 won at just six rodeos. “I’m just trying to get as much money won at these big winter rodeos as I can so I can stay home with my boys more,” said Ketcham, who has two young boys, Pike, 4, and Bridger, 8, with her husband Justin. Ketchem, who is sponsored by Professional’s Choice and the joint protection duo of Polyglycan and Tandem Oral, will finish out San Angelo on Thursday before heading to Arlington, Texas, San Antonio Continued on Page 4 In the News......In the News..... The annual pro rodeo in Tucson – la Fiesta de los Vaqueros – broke its attendance record with more than 60,000 spectators throughout the Feb. 15-23 event, including 11,000 for the Sunday finale. The huge crowd got a big treat that day, as suspense hung heavily on the very last barrel racer of the performance. Ann Scott hadn’t placed in the first round; her horse had slipped at the first barrel and she wound up with a 17.81 – but it was still a respectable run in Tucson’s enormous arena just after she’d competed in the indoor pen at San Angelo, Texas. Scott’s 9-year-old gelding, Buzz, had it figured out by the second round, however, and she clocked the fastest time of the entire rodeo – a 17.22 – to win the round. On Sunday in the finals, defending world champ Sherry Cervi posted a 17.6 to take the lead in the average of her hometown rodeo in a performance wracked with wrecks. “The first girl had fallen and her horse was running around the arena without her,” said Scott, 32. “Then another girl fell. A few horses went down bad. Trula [Churchill] went right before me and her horse fell and she pulled up. I was standing next to the pickup man thinking, ‘Oh great, what do I do?’ But I knew I couldn’t safety up because it was such a tough rodeo.” Using two hands to help Buzz stand up, Scott felt him handle the ground beautifully and the result was a smoking 17.29. The next fastest runs were a 17.5 and 17.6. “Before I ran, the announcer said ‘There’s only one girl who can beat Sherry Cervi,’ and when I crossed the finish line the whole crowd just started screaming,” said Scott, who had won the average by three-tenths of a second. She hadn’t owned the mare; simply went looking for a nice mare and then decided to find the best stud she could. A friend of hers had a nice half-thoroughbred daughter of Merridoc named Immunity that was standing around, so Scott bred her to Dash Ta Fame. Now she also has a 7-year-old full brother to Buzz and a 3-year-old full sister. “He just loves his job,” said Scott of her powerhouse horse. “He gets so excited when I get to the rodeo. He is a handful, but not in a mean way – just so excited and flinging his head in the air. Then when he’s in the arena, he’s all business and totally focused. He just loves it. If I go hook up my trailer and don’t take him with me, he starts screaming that he wants to go.” Scott plans to put him in the trailer more this year than she did the past couple of years when stunt work was more of a priority. “My goal is just to go to some bigger rodeos that I’ve never been to before; to have fun seeing different places,” she said with a grin. “I’ll play it one rodeo at a time. Anything could happen so I try to play that head game with myself where I decide I’m just taking it one rodeo at a time.” La Fiesta de los Vaqueros Feb 15-23, 2014, Tucson, AZ Average on three runs: 1 Fallin For Fame, Ann Scott, 52.32, $3,320 05 ch. g. RFD-TV’s The American By Tanya Randall The field for the World’s Richest One-Day Rodeo, RFD-TV’s The American, is set. Stunt woman Erin Ricotti of Escalon, Calif., leads the field of 10 qualifiers that will face the Top 10 in the WPRA and Charmayne James on Sunday, March 2 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Ricotti and 7-year-old Royal Star Commander, bred and owned by Jim and Ruth Haislip, Acampo, Calif., posted a 15.038 to win The American Semifinals, held Feb. 21-23 at the famed Mesquite Rodeo in Mesquite, Texas. The victory was worth $14,730 of the $61,915 barrel racing purse. “That was his very first rodeo performance with the crowd and music and all of that,” said Ricotti. “He was very nervous, especially with the specialty acts – the big Percherons and working horses pulling the wagons. Those scared him to death. Warming up we never loped a circle. He did big ol’ lopsided eggs, broke to a trot and bolted. He warmed his muscles up but there wasn’t any schooling being done out there! “I went inside during the calf roping after the wagons left. I was behind the bucking chutes so he could see the crowd and he could hear the loud applause when someone did good or when the loud music came on when someone started a run. I kind of got him used to that, just keeping him moving, walking around, bumping into people and being irritating. After about five guys, he found a spot to stand and exhaled, he was relaxed by the time barrels started. “He knew what his job was when he went there. He just wants to look at everything while he’s doing his job. After I turned the first barrel I could hear the crowd. There had been so many hit barrels that I think the crowd was really looking for that clean run, and I could feel it building at each barrel. The qualifying round consisted of the top 10 contestants from each of the five BBR-sanctioned qualifiers with just the top 20 of the top 50 moving on to the Shootout Round, split between two rodeo performances on Saturday and Sunday. “The first run I told myself I know he’s fast; I don’t have to be great,” said Ricotti, who made her Shootout run on Saturday. “I just have to be good. He’ll be better on his second one. I knew if neither one of us overreacted nor did anything really crazy, as fast as he is, I figured we’d be in the top 20. Then when I found out they only paid five monies, I was like man I should have cleaned something up somewhere instead of placing seventh.” Robyn Herring and leading sire and performer Firewaterontherocks posted the fastest time of the rodeo with a picture perfect run of 14.960 to win the Qualifying Round and $3,682.50. Ricotti and Commander were a 15.284 with a wild run that ended with Commander ducking and dodging the alleyway and shutting down before the timer. “Everyone tried to tip-toe around talking about it,” laughed Ricotti. “I was there. I experienced it in living color. It wasn’t pretty. “I can definitely say he didn’t hunt the barrels. He looked around. I had to tell him here it comes, slow down, turn here, let’s go over here now. He’s so willing and so athletic that he can just do it. The first run he didn’t want to find the alleyway. I had gone in the day before and went in and out and in and out. It was different when we made our run because he went back into “run mode” and out in California we don’t have alleyways. You veer off or stop straight. I guess he was thinking that it was solid, so he zig-zagged on the way home. I was riding him two-handed and I think when I corrected him he would go too far the other way; I think I actually lost more momentum than if I had just one hand on the reins. On my second run, I rode one-handed and let him find it.” As wild as it was, everyone marveled at the talent – and speed – Barrel Racing Report of last year’s BFA Semi-Finals Money Winners World Derby Cham1 Erin Ricotti $14,730 pion. Commander 2 Katelyn McLeod, $15,343.75 is by AR Star, a son 3 Robyn Herring $13,502.50 of Shawne Bug that 4 June Holeman $7,365 Marilyn Cama5 Gretchen Benbenek $6,751.25 rillo and the Haislips 6 Tammy Fischer $2,455 used to own (they’ve 7 Shelly Anzick $1,227.50 since given him back to his original owners), and out of Ruth Haislip’s three-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier Go Royal Scarlett, which she raised by Royal Go Go out of Wild N Groovy, by Three Ohs Wild. Ricotti said Commander’s a young 7 because he didn’t start his barrel racing career until he was a 6-year-old. “He’s just going to get better because he’s going to get more confidence,” said Ricotti. “I don’t even let him run. I kick two times and then start slowing down. He’s still learning to control it, which is why he runs around the turns sometime. I don’t think he knows how fast he’s going sometimes. “The first run, he was giving me whiplash because I was waiting for him to finish the turn and he was taking off before he was finished. The Shootout, we were more in sync because he was finishing his turns. He had a little slip at the third and I feel like he would have finished it stronger, faster if he hadn’t have hung his toe going into it.” With Ricotti running in Saturday’s performance, she had to wait until Sunday’s 10 ran to see if she’s make the cut and more important pull a check. “For my second run, I was like I have to win some money,” said Ricotti, noting that only two monies will be paid at The American— first and second only. “It’s all for nothing now if I don’t win some money. The goal isn’t just to make it to The American. The goal is to win money. To win money at The American is going to be a tall order. It’s against Mary and Sherry. It’s the wolves of the business The American Semi-Finals Continued on Page 29 February 25, 2014 Page 27 Barrel Racing Report February 25, 2014 Page 28 The American Semi-Finals From Page 27 … and me and Commander.” Ricotti, who trained and sold barrel horses and picked up a California Circuit Rodeo or two when her filming schedule allowed, is excited to be a part of this historic event. “My grandfather was a Turtle and was involved with the start of the RCA before the PRCA,” she explained. “It’s pretty neat that all these years later that maybe a new Rodeo Association or a new thing is happening in rodeo, and I get to be a part of that initial growth.” The 21 contestants—the 10 qualifiers, the Top 10 WPRA and Charmayne James, who got the champions exemption—will all make a qualifying round run with the top four contestants moving on to the Shootout Round for the $100,000 first-place check. As the winner of the semifinals, Ricotti will run towards the bottom of the draw. “They’re starting with the 10th qualifier, then No. 10 in the world, then the 9th qualifier, then No. 9 in the World,” she explained. “With all those girls before me and them dragging every five, I’ll be able to see what I need to do, and I’ll know when I need to start shutting him down for the first barrel. “We’ve just got to go for it, because that’s how it’s set up. It’s exciting.” The American Semi-Finals February 21-23, 2014, Mesquite, TX ShootOut Round (Top 10 Advance to The American): 1 Royal Star Commander, Erin Ricotti, 15.038, $14,730 2 Kellies Chick, Katelyn McLeod, 15.059, $12,275 3 Firewaterontherocks, Robyn Herring, 15.130, $9,820 4 Hopes Money Boy, June Holeman, 15.208, $7,365 5 Shot Of Firewater, Gretchen Benbenek, 15.247, $4,910 6 Bully By Design, Clint Sherlin, 15.299 Barrel Racing Report 7 Hot N Frosted, Tami Semas, 15.317 8 Scooten Ta Fame, Shelly Anzick, 15.458 9 Flaming Pastem, Kenna Squires, 15.526 10 KN Red by Design, Kay Blandford, 15.622 11 Debs Sporty Win, Paige Conrado, 15.652 12 Guys French Jet, Jackie Ganter, 15.685 13 Bullarkstic, Morgann McDonald, 15.792 14 Cloud Gray, Nina Smith, 15.876 15 Jet O Red, Nicole Love, 20.281 16 Fiesta Del Rey, Kelly Yates, 20.401 17 MP Quick Money, Tammy Fischer, 20.499 18 KG Justiceweexpected, Kathy Grimes, 20.546 19 Breezin Flit Bar, Jessica Eagleberger, 21.528 20 Blazin Baby J, Callie Rios, 25.713 Friday Long Go (Top 20 Advance to ShootOut Round): 1 Firewaterontherocks, Robyn Herring, 14.960, $3,682.50 2 Kellies Chick, Katelyn McLeod, 15.011, $3,068.75 3 MP Quick Money, Tammy Fischer, 15.058, $2,455 4 Shot Of Firewater, Gretchen Benbenek, 15.241, $1,841.25 5 Scooten Ta Fame, Shelly Anzick, 15.251, $1,227.50 6 Hopes Money Boy, June Holeman, 15.270 7 Royal Star Commander, Erin Ricotti, 15.284 8 Bully By Design, Clint Sherlin, 15.286 9 Blazin Baby J, Callie Rios, 15.309 10 The Red Dasher, Kenna Squires, 15.333 11 Fiesta Del Rey, Kelly Yates, 15.407 12 Hot H Frosted, Tami Semas, 15.428 13 Debs Sporty Win, Paige Conrado, 15.435 14 Bullarkstic, Morgann McDonald, 15.433 15 KN Red By Design, Kay Blandford, 15.456 16 Jet O Red, Nicole Love, 15.457 The American Semi-Finals Continued on Page 30 February 25, 2014 Page 29 The American Semi-Finals From Page 29 17 KG Justiceweexpected, Kathy Grimes, 15.482 18 Breezin Flit Bar, Jessi Eagleberger, 15.485 19 Cloud Gray, Nina Smith, 15.499 20 Guys French Jet, Jackie Ganter, 15.550 21 TS Doc San Lena, Shelby Herrmann, 15.570 22 HM Cornerstone, Kebo Almond, 15.582 23 Rebel Takes Cash, Shelby Fraiser, 15.589 24 Fiestas Cash, Kelly Yates, 15.624 25 VF Rock Grinder, Cashen Turner, 15.634 26 Brand Me Lucky, Mallory Champagne, 15.663 27 HBS Mayan Gold, Jordon Briggs, 15.714 28 Bar None Extremes, Shali Lord, 15.738 29 Repete Fame, Danyelle Bassett, 15.751 30 Peppy Colonel Tivio, Christine Laughlin, 15.754 31 Super Devotion, Ronnie Will, 15.756 32 Powdergirls Shakem, Angie Meadors, 15.781 33 Miss Gay Bar Abby, Summer Huff, 15.807 34 Extras Honor, Orla Mae Harvey, 15.816 35 Guys Six Pack To Go, Christine Laughlin, 15.850 36 HR Reeds Jet Bug, Mark Bugni, 15.866 37 RLJ High Intedisty, Talmadge Green, 16.072 38 VF A Live Design, Kendal Owen, 16.119 39 Sugs Perfection Ta Fame, Sydney Surin, 16.500 40 Famous Dungarees, Danyelle Bassett, 20.353 41 Jodys Special Dream, Shali Lord, 20.378 42 Sheza Classy Rebel, Lauren Sparks, 20.478 43 Sparta Lite, Toni Hardin, 20.595 44 FC Guys Prime Time, Katie Garthwaite, 21.402 45 Sendera, Becki Mask, 25.512 46 Una Cerveza By Pedro, Kelly Koeppen, 31.395 47 Fortune N Fame, Kendal Owen, 33.354 48 Stitchs Streaknfame, Andrea Cline, NT 49 Marthas Sixshooter, Jolene Montgomery, NT 50 Rare Dillion, Callie duPerier, scratch The American Barrel Racing Draw & Horses March 2, 2014, Dallas, TX Q - for qualifier; E - for exemption 1 Kay Blandford, Kn Red By Design (Q) 2 Sabrina Ketchum, Swivel Ta Fame or Write It Thelma 3 Kenna Squires, Flaming Pastem (Q) 4 Jane Melby, First Down Perk 5 Shelly Anzick, Scooten Ta Fame (Q) 6 Shada Brazile, Hpq Smokin Rascal 7 Tami Semas, Hot N Frosted (Q) 8 Christy Loflin, Sheza Blazin Move 9 Clint Sherlin, Bully By Design (Q) 10 Kaley Bass, Wonders Moon Song 11 Gretchen Benbenek, Shot Of Firewater (Q) 12 Michele Mcleod, Slick By Design 13 June Holeman, Hopes Money Boy (Q) 14 Taylor Jacob, Honor Thy Frenchman 15 Robyn Herring, Firewaterontherocks (Q) 16 Lisa Lockhart, An Oakie With Cash 17 Katelyn Mcleod, Kellies Chick (Q) 18 Mary Walker, Perculatin 19 Erin Ricotti, Royal Star Commander (Q) 20 Sherry Cervi, Mp Meter My Hay 21 Charmayne James, James Jolly Taylor (E) This list is unofficial and could change prior to this weekend, but is to the best of our knowledge at this time accurate. He was a well know missionary, author and evangelist who backed up what he said with real life, firsthand experiences. Gossett said there was one word understood by all people wherever he ministered around the world. That word was “hallelujah” which means “Praise the Lord”. Psalm 22:3 tells us God inhabits the praises of His people. Don’t live as grumbling, defeated Christian. If you can’t think of anything in your life right now to thank God for, then thank Him for blessings you’ve received in the past. Jesus says plainly in John 15:7 how to get your prayers answered. He said, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you.” Are you depressed and having a bad day down in the dumps? One fast way is to chase the devil out of your thoughts is to say “Praise the Lord” ten times. He’ll turn tail and run! Praising God is personal but very powerful. Praise pleases God and brings you closer to Him. Just try and see. M ike Morrison and his wife Sherry are ordained ministers in their own nondenominational church in Gillette, WY.
