THE JYST CLERMONT NORTHEASTERN HIGH SCHOOL 5327 HUTCHINSON ROAD BATAVIA, OHIO 45103 Volume 11 Issue 3 MARCH 2016 Respect Everyone Despite the Odds By: Grace Bush and Heather Helton Jyst Staff Reporter Many students here at Clermont Northeastern had never experienced ReDo Day until this year of course. ReDo Day was first introduced to Clermont Northeastern in 2012. Some of the seniors have had first hand experience with ReDo Day as the first ReDo day was first come first serve and was a combination of all the classes. This year, the classes were separated and they each had their own ReDo Day, with the exception of the seniors. The freshman had their ReDo Day on January 7. The sophomores followed with their ReDo Day on January 26, and finally the juniors had their ReDo Day on February 26. ReDo Day lasted all day, but there was never a dull moment. The day was filled with many fun and eye opening experiences. Sophomore Elizabeth Glancy said, “I believe that ReDo Day as a whole made the sophomore class open their eyes to everything and everyone around them.” ReDo Day all together truly did change everybody's view on life. The classes bonded and came to realize that they are a more alike than what they may have thought. ReDo Day gives classmates a chance to learn things about each other they would have never known. During the course of the day students discussed experiences that they've had good and bad. They also get a chance to talk to people in their grade to apologize for things and mend old friendships. ReDo Day allows students a chance to start over with things that have happened throughout the years. While the author of this quote is unknown, it is something to take away from the entire idea and experience of ReDo Day. “Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” The hope is that ReDo Day will be a thing that everyone will get to experience for years to come to help make their high school experience better. This experience has taught students not to judge people so easily and has helped friendships form that were never thought as possible before. Intersession 2016: Preview By: Emily Huff Jyst Staff Reporter The 2015-2016 school year marks the return of some of our favorites intersession courses! This year will also introduce some new and exciting intersession courses taught by the best teachers! This year, History Through Film returns and will be taught by Mr. Ricco, Ms. Trame, and Mrs. Price. Students in this course will learn about historical events by watching a film about the event. Returning again is Healthy Living taught by Mr. Iles, Ms. Posgay, and Ms. Allmyer. Also returning is Picnic Tables taught by Mr. Jelley and Mr. Ritchey. Students will learn woodworking by constructing two different picnic tables. Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse with Mr. Taktak, Mr. Williams, and Mr. Rose teaches students vital survival skills to survive any disaster from a flood to an actual Zombie Apocalypse! As for new intersession courses, Star Wars: Return of the Intersession will be taught by none other than Mr. Friend, Mr. Moore, and Mr. Sick. Students will learn about Stars Wars. Sophomore Tim Huff says, “I like the flexibility that there is in the class, and that they are open to suggestions.” Additionally, Ms. Campbell and Mrs. Hardy are introducing Needlecrafts which is a new course in which students will learn how to crochet, knit, sew, and needlepoint. Senior Kelsey Herndon says, “I’m looking forward to learning new things, like sewing. Plus I can make myself a cute new scarf!” Also new this year, the course Peace, Love, and Life Skills will be taught by Mrs. Stegemann, Mr. Terpstra, and Mrs. Greene. This course will teach students about life after graduation. A new Ethnic Gaming course will be taught by Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. Hodeib as they will introduce students to the world of Computer Graphics and Video Editing. Another new course, Literature Thru Film, will be taught by Mrs. Desgrange and Ms. Anderson. This course will have you analyze a film by looking at all the different parts that go into filmmaking. For many seniors, their senior trip will occur over Intersession. The Senior Trip takes CNE seniors to New York City! This trip is brought to you by Mrs. Desgrange, Ms. Wayne, Mr. Gettler, and Mr. Wells. Highlights of this trip will include sights such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State building, and Chinatown. Senior Jessica Glancy happily says, “I can’t wait to experience my last adventure with the class of 2016.” Many students at CNE can agree that these intersession courses are a great way to finish off the school year, and start summer! A Night to Remember By: Grace Bush Jyst Staff Reporter Photo courtesy of Kody Boyd Here at Clermont Northeastern High School, students kicked off the new year by attending the annual Winter Homecoming. The dance was on Saturday, January 16, 2016. Due to some scheduling problems, the homecoming committee was not able to welcome back the same DJ that was present at past homecoming events, but luckily CNE was able to welcome an amazing DJ at the last minute. DJ E-Trayn was the life and light of Winter Homecoming! DJ E-Trayn played a wide variety of music. He played throwbacks such as “Laffy Taffy” by D4L, but he also had a lot of modern songs from artists such as Fetty Wap, Sam Hunt, Beyonce’ and more. Senior Carlie Anderson says, “My homecoming was amazing! The DJ was so cool he danced with us and played music that ev- eryone would know and be able to dance to.” Along with an awesome DJ there were also refreshments that were served and a photo booth. As the night went on it was finally time to crown king and queen. There were many good candidates to choose from. Seniors Devin Campbell and Heather Hicks were the ones who were voted Winter Homecoming King and Queen. After they were crowned, things got back under way and everyone went back to dancing. There were so many things happening on the dance floor! There were people singing and rapping songs, and a few dance offs which were really fun to watch! Along with dancing all night, you had the opportunity to get to dress to impress. Senior Stephanie Peterson said, “Homecoming was a blast! My favorite part seeing everyone dressed up nicely.” Winter Homecoming was full of many memories that will last a lifetime! This year’s Winter Homecoming has built a great deal of excitement for future homecoming events. Here at The JYST, we encourage you to attend dances and other activities and make the most out of your high school experience. Not only will you have a great time, but you will have many memories with your friends. Loud and Proud: Winter Pep-Rally By: Heather Helton Jyst Staff Reporter Every year, Clermont Northeastern starts celebrating the week before the Winter Homecoming dance. This year, Ms. Allmyer started us off by planning an amazing spirit week while Ms. Freeman coordinated an entertaining pep rally to raise excitement for this year’s Winter Homecoming. We started the week off by really experiencing PJ Day to the max with a snow day on Monday. Everyone paired up for Twin Tuesday, but nobody was sweating Workout Wednesday. Thursday was Neon Class Color Day with the teachers wearing white, the seniors in green, the juniors in pink, the sophomores in yellow, and the freshman in neon orange. As usual, Friday was Spirit Day with everyone representing the Rockets in blue and gold! Senior Kelsey Herndon said, “It's pretty interesting to see how people dress up for Spirit Week. There is always someone who goes all out. I feel like if they gave out awards that people liked then more people would do it and school spirit would spread around.” To top off the pre-homecom- ing festivities, our pep rally was held Friday afternoon. Many students and staff members were involved. The pep rally consisted of several fun events! Ms. Freeman and Ms. Posgay each got a pie to the face from students Luke Rayburn and Isabella Amann. Ms. Posgay said, “It was super delish! The custard was a nice addition.” Also, there was a drag race where each class pulled members of their class across the gym floor on a sheet. In the drag race against the classes, the junior class claimed victory. The sophomores dominated the scavenger hunt, but the seniors got their redemption with the frozen t-shirt contest thanks to Kody Boyd. The cheerleaders performed a special mash-up dance halfway through the pep rally. Mr. Terpstra and Mrs. Yeager got a win for the teachers from the banana split contest and Mrs. Hardy and Mrs. Stegeman also helped get another win from the contest where they put shaving cream on their face and their partner had to throw Cheetos onto their face and make it stick to the shaving cream. All in all, everyone enjoyed the pep rally and were excited for the Winter Homecoming game and dance. Fitspiration is a term a lot of people use when they aspire to improve their physical health by using fitness inspiration. Everyone, whether they are young or old, aspires to be healthy and fit, but it isn't always easy. Most people, like me, lack the time, or even the motivation to actually make themselves exercise and eat healthy, while others simply don't know how to get started. There are many things that can cause a person to ignore their fitspiration and not follow through with their original goal of getting healthier. With fast food restaurants being so accessible, and on almost every street corner, it can be really hard to find healthy alternatives to the greasy fast food that most people are used to consuming. Also if you look at the salads on the menu, they are a lot more expensive than the dollar menu’s unhealthy options. Having such a large amount of food available for the public that is inexpensive motivates most people to buy something that won't hurt their wallet unlike most healthy choices. While most people are trying to live healthier, it can be a hard journey for some. Breaking the habit of eating food that isn't good for you can cause some people to struggle. Statistics actually show that our bodies have become addicted to the grease, sugar, and fat that most unhealthy foods are made of. It is one of my daily struggles to try and eat healthy, and while most of the time I don't do as well as I should, I find it's one of the most important things someone can do to better themselves. It is also important to start exercising in order to become healthier. Most people believe that in order to exercise they have to frequent the gym and once again pay a large amount of money for physical fitness, but that's not the case. There are so many things on the internet that can help you start a workout routine or lead you down the right path. Unfortunately, I have a hard time avidly keeping up with my fitness so I am not the one to judge. Fitspiration is a personal choice to better yourself and no one can force you into a healthy lifestyle. It can be a great decision in life to become physically fit, but fitness is not mandatory to have a happy life and shouldn't be made out to be that way. All of us here at the JYST staff encourage everyone to be happy with who they are and if you want to make a change then that is strictly up to you. Encouragement is everywhere. Stay determined and follow through with the goals you set for yourself! Photo courtesy of Keegan Bolton In today's time kids are pressured to make the most of their teenage years, but still make extravagant plans in order to have the best future they can possibly have for themselves. Teens go through a lot in their younger years. Many are given large amounts of homework throughout the week and even on the weekends. Some have after school jobs that add long hours, hard work, and less time for school work and extracurricular activities to the list of stressors. Kids are also encouraged to apply to as many colleges as possible and fill out many financial aid forms and scholarships in order to advance their college careers. This may be a very large weight on some people’s shoulders due to the deadlines and the high competition. On top of all of this, we are told that we must become adults at such an early age, yet we’re still treated as if we are children. What kind of extreme standards are these? The generations of our parents and grandparents were not even close to being this hard for young adults or teenagers. In our parents’ time, school work was less advanced and they were less pressured by the new curriculum than we are now. With time comes discovery and, let's be honest, we have learned a lot of things about the world and have had many technological advances in the last couple of decades or so. As we learn new things, it is society's responsibility to pass that knowledge on to the future generation. We learn more and more, and the curriculum starts to increase in difficulty as well. How many of your parents can say they were in school after the alphabet was added to our math problems? Most parents have a harder time helping their kids with homework because they simply weren't taught this type of information at this level when they were in school. Generations of the past had their pressures and stressors, but it was nothing compared to what the kids of today have to experience. In today's world, while college isn’t mandatory it is highly encouraged to attend in order to prosper in life. In the past it was not necessary to go to college in order to make an actual living, but now we are always told that without a college degree we will be constantly struggling to find a job and be living paycheck to paycheck. Now we’re all expected to want to go to college, but college can get pretty expensive. Especially if you have to pay for it by yourself. Back in the day college wasn’t nearly as expensive as it is today. With all examples listed, it can be easy to understand why some teenagers love to gripe about how hard their lives actually are, and maybe some parents can understand where we’re all coming from and why we seem to complain so much. So no matter what generation you are from, all of us here at the JYST staff encourage those to try hard for things that are wanted in your life despite the challenges or the generation differences. Jyst Staff Reporter Photo courtesy of McKenzie Whalen Many people take advantage of the life we live these days. With technology becoming as advanced as it is, many people don’t stop and appreciate all that they have. Life has never been so easy due the constant advances being made in all of our day to day activities. Keeping in touch with people everywhere has brought everyone together. No longer do people have to wait weeks to send a letter in the mail, all that is needed is a decent wifi connection. Back in the day, people who wanted to hang out with their friends, had to go through a painful process of finding a pay- phone, getting in touch with of everyone, and hoping that plans wouldn’t suddenly change. In today’s world, all that is needed is a simple group text. Cell phones have created a simple and easy world. In high school it seems as if the majority of the students have some sort of mobile device. Everybody, in some form or another, is connected. The average smartphone is stronger, smarter, faster, and smaller than the computer that sent man to the moon. But it’s more than just technological advancements. Today’s society has taken many big leaps to eradicate inequality. Racism is getting more and more rare each and every year. Gay men and women now have the opportunity to legally marry in any state. Only a few short decades ago opportunities all over the world were being thrown away due to sexual preferences and skin color. Now people all over America are being more widely accepted than before, making life not just easier for them, but for everyone. Life is easier now. Whether it’s because of technology, social acceptance, or even advances in education and science. America and it’s people are growing stronger as a nation, and because of that life is truly easier. The Right to Vote By: McKenzie Whalen Editor-in-Cheif CAMPUS 3 Pep up the Game! CNE Drama Club Presents... By: Grace Bush By: Keegan Bolton Jyst Staff Reporter Jyst Staff Reporter Photo courtesy of Stephanie Peterson Just because marching band has to come to an end doesn’t mean the band stops playing! While it is sad to see the marching band hang up their hats till next season, the instruments do not get put away as it is the start of pep band! The pep band performs at the basketball games and the members of the pep band vary each night depending on which color group they are in. During the games, the pep band plays music to help keep the energy of the crowd high and to pump the Rocket fans up. When discussing pep band Senior Crystal Gott said, “It’s great! We get to play our old marching songs after football season is over.” Pep band also gives seniors an opportunity to continue doing what they enjoy while getting to watch basketball games. Pep band also gives senior band members a chance to spend time with the underclassmen and the rest of their friends before they graduate and go their separate ways. It also provides an opportunity for the underclassmen to have something to do in between marching band seasons and they can actively practice playing the songs and instruments. Senior Sean Hannon said, “Pep band is a unique experience. It’s chaotic and laid back compared to marching band. It gives members of the band opportunities to try different instruments and experiment.” The CNE fans and winter athletes would like to thank this year’s pep band for their support, high energy performances, and for leading the crowd in displaying Rocket pride! Congratulations to all members of the pep band on another outstanding season! Staff vs. Sherriff’s Basketball Game By: Hannah Ross Jyst Staff Reporter Photo courtesy of Google Images Has there ever been a time in your life where you wanted to change something in your community? What about an opportunity to change something in your country? As American citizens, if you are over the age of eighteen, you are given the right to vote in local and state elections in order to change and improve your community and country. Sadly many Americans, especially those who are newly able to vote, do not take advantage of this right and neglect it all together. In today's society there are so many reasons as to why it is important for young people to vote. As the new generation it is increasingly important for many young people to go out and vote. Not only is voting your right and responsibility as an American that should be fully taken advantage of , but it is a great exercise for one to get involved in politics and your community. Many countries around the world do not allow their citizens the opportunity to vote, or have a voice in how their country is governed. With that being said, Americans are very lucky for this opportunity and shouldn’t ignore it. Senior Kelsey Herndon said, “I’m very thankful to live in a country where I can get my opinion out there, and that it is considered a right of mine as a citizen. I plan to take full advantage of this when the election comes around.” Regardless of what you may think, even as a single citizen in Clermont County, your vote matters. Your vote as a citizen can make a difference in both the local and national elections on important issues, choosing representatives, and even presidential candidates. Your vote could be the difference between an issue being passed, or deciding the new leader of our country. Wasting an opportunity to make a difference by simply not voting helps no one, especially not yourself. Junior Neil Meagher said, “I personally plan on voting because I want my voice to be heard. I believe that I can become a more independent and involved citizen by contributing my opinion to society.” As young citizens voting can also be a gateway into adulthood, and independence that was not available before. Deciding to become a participating member of society by contributing your opinion can have many benefits for not only your community, but for you as well. So whether you are turning eighteen or are already of age, it is important to register to vote and get your opinion heard. All of us here at The JYST encourage students and teachers of age to vote in this coming election, and students who are not yet of age to think about voting as soon as they are eligible. Just Do It... Later... By: Heather Helton Jyst Staff Reporter As the quarter wizzes by and intersession is getting near, everyone needs to keep their heads in the game. At this point, the year seems to drag on. In reality, the end is so close and making it to the end of May will be a great victory for everyone whether it will be the last day of another school year, or making your way into your senior year, or even your last day of your high school career! While many seniors have been experiencing senioritis, pulling through to the end and graduating will be well worth the hard work and perseverance! Sometimes, everyone needs a little motivation to keep going, especially after having several days off for holidays or the hazardous road conditions due to the extreme snow throughout January and February. Keeping up on homework may seem like a horrid chore, but it will reap more benefits than it would seem. Senior Tim Warner said, “I’ve had senioritis since second grade. I’ve just gotten used to it and made it a part of how I do things and I still manage to pass my classes.” As students, we will be challenged to continue to complete homework and projects as well as remain engaged and involved during classes especially as the weather turns warm, but a summer free of stress and being able to enjoy the moment of another successful school year in the books will be well worth the work. By continuing to stay determined, focused, and goal oriented the success will feel better than the temporary side effects of senioritis. For the underclassmen, it is also vital to continue putting forth your best effort as the year winds down. Always asking for help if you don't understand something is a must do for anyone and everyone whether you are struggling in class already or fear you may begin to struggle. Spring fever seems to hit us all as the temperatures rise and the days are getting longer. Junior Garen Reynolds said “If you just keep up with your work and everything, it will all pay off in the end.” There's always a day when you won't want to go to school, but toughing out those days is the way to go in order to make it to the last day of school. We are all in the same situation as we early await the warm and relaxing days summer, but it is important that we do the work now so we can all enjoy the most of our summer break! Keep the Spirit Up! Photo courtesy of Heather Helton On Thursday, February 11, 2016 Clermont Northeastern High School hosted a staff versus sheriff’s basketball game. The Clermont County Sheriff’s Department went head to head with our staff here at CNE. Everyone in the school was invited to come enjoy this event, and we were also joined by the middle school students and middle school teachers. Technology teacher Mr. TakTak said, “It was a wonderful time, and nice to see the more personal side of the sheriff’s deputies.” At the end of the game the CNE staff took home the win. Junior Nick Taylor said, “It was a really close game and very exciting. I was rooting for the sheriff’s department, but I was happy our teachers won as well.” We greatly appreciate the Clermont County Sheriff’s Department deputies coming to our school and making this an entertaining event. Many students are looking forward to another head-to-head rematch this spring! This year is going to be a great one for the music and drama lovers of Clermont Northeastern High School with the hit musical, The Addams Family, coming up in May. With last years “Oklahoma!” being such a huge hit not only with the audience, but with the cast as well, we are sure that we will have another great run. We have an amazing cast this year with Christopher Moorhouse as Gomez Addams and Hannah Stegemann as Morticia Addams. High School Band Teacher and The Addams Family Director Mr. Moore said, “I’m very glad to be working with such a talented group of students this year. Those who worked hard and practiced for the auditions really stood out.“ Students of Clermont Northeastern are excited to be performing in front of a live audience at UC Clermont this May. We welcome music lovers of all ages to come out and enjoy an entertaining production. The staff who participated in the game included Mr. Taktak, Mr. Jelly, Mr. Terpstra, Mr. Moore, Mr. Iles, Mr. Kirk, Mr. Sanders, along with several others. During the game we had many things to get the gym pumped up for the game. The students in the bleachers, including the middle school students, participated in the wave, also the very popular “dab.” Along with a performance of “A Thousand Miles” by Senior James Lambing. The game was a great way to bring the school together and we hope to enjoy it again for a rematch! Photo courtesy of Heather Helton By: Grace Bush Jyst Staff Reporter When games start getting tough, whether the team is struggling to keep up or just barely staying ahead, sometimes it can be hard to keep the energy up. Here at Clermont Northeastern High School to keep the energy up at all times we have the Rocket Rowdies who cheer on all of the teams. In doing so, the Rowdies do crowd cheers with the cheerleaders and make noise for the various Rocket teams. The Rocket Rowdies are made up of freshman through seniors. The Rowdies go to many games whether the games are home or away. This year’s Rocket Rowdies signed a petition during football season in order to get a bus to take them to a game that was far away. Sometimes the Rowdies receive perks such as pizza as a token of appreciation for their support. Senior Alyson Hazelbaker said, “The pizza was always a good start to the night! The student section was a lot of fun and full of energy. I’m glad I got to enjoy my last season in the Rowdies with all the awesome people who came out!” The Rowdies have really grown and improved over the years. They have been a major part in improving school spirit and getting more people to come out and support the sports teams. The Rocket Rowdies are a great support system and help to new students and incoming freshman by demonstrating a supportive fan base at the games. They will stand up, sing and clap along with the fight song. The Rowdies are ever changing as seniors leave and freshman come in. When the seasons change, some students leave to play sports and other students come in because there sport has ended. This shows that the students at CNE are here to support one another in the various sporting seasons and events. We appreciate the loyalty and involvement of the Rocket Rowdies and we look forward to seeing this group continue to grow! Teacher Thought Corner By: Sarah Riehle Jyst Staff Reporter The decisions you make during your time in high school can have many long term effects and will play a role as you journey throughout adulthood. CNE math teacher Mrs. Hardy said, “You will be an adult for far longer than you’ll be a teenager.” Although students do not spend a huge amount of time in high school alone, Mrs. Hardy said, “Your whole adult life will be shaped at least partly by the kind of person you make yourself into as a teenager.” You may only be wandering around the halls of CNE for a short time, making good decisions and doing what is right should be a goal for all students. Your teachers and parents would be happy to see you succeed and take part in the many positive things that high school can offer. Mrs. Hardy shares, “When I look back on my years in high school, I never regret the good decisions I made. Working hard in school, dedicating myself wholeheartedly to my sport, being a good friend, and helping people who needed help are proud memories.” Participating in activities and getting good grades are great for students and have wonderful rewards beyond high school. Such rewards can open up many doors and reveal options like college or career opportunities you might find interesting, even some that you never really took into consideration before. Mrs. Hardy added, “We educators want you to make us proud and your families proud, but ultimately only you will have to live with yourself forever.” Therefore students are encouraged to make choices that will make them proud for years to come. Mrs. Hardy sends this reminder to students, “Be nice to people and think of others before yourself.” Doing this can help shape you into a better person. Offering help to a friend or even a stranger you may not know are very good qualities in people and can help to build you into a better person. Mrs. Hardy also advises all students to put forth their best effort. Students should always try their hardest because the outcome will be better if you put forth all of your effort and really work hard for something like getting a good grade on that test or winning a game of your selected sport. Making a conscious effort to make better decisions and do what is right can influence what your life will be like in the future. Mrs. Hardy said, “The rest of your life begins now, make it a worthwhile life!” Everyone on the JYST staff would like to thank Mrs. Hardy for taking part in this month’s “Teacher Thought Corner.” If other teachers would like to be featured in the next edition, they are strongly encouraged to contact a member of The JYST. She said, “Stay on top of deadlines and assignments but also savor these last months with your friends and family.” Ms. Gillio wants us to know whether we decide to join the military, work full time, or attend college our lives are going to change a lot, but we cannot forget to find joy in this home stretch. For those seniors with college in their futures, Ms. Gillio wants them to “Think about it, talk about it, and act on it!” She says that even if you are not sure about what your main plan is, it is still important to do your research and know the deadlines that are coming up and know the application process. Aside from all the helpful advice given to CNE’s seniors, Ms. Gillio was excited about a very helpful event that took place for the underclassmen at our school, that being Re-Do day. Ms. Gillio was excited that freshmen, sophomores, and juniors got to experience the inspiring event. To round off this counselor’s corner, Ms. Gillio would like share a helpful quote that goes out to everyone here at CNE. She had a great conversation with a student, with the topic being what to do when life gets tough, she says we have one choice: sink or swim. She would like to tell everyone a quote that we should all know and that is, “Just Keep Swimming!” Student Spotlight By: Sarah Riehle Photo courtesy of Sarah Reihle Junior Hannah Hoerth is an outgoing and active student here at Clermont Northeastern. Hannah has gone to CNE her whole life. She said, “I like how we are a small school, everyone knows everyone.” This year she is enrolled in classes including AP English, Trigonometry, Spanish 3, Government, and Chemistry. This semester she is also taking her favorite class, Creative College Preparation Timeline Writing. Hannah works hard throughout school but not just with her academics. She is very dedicated to sports including basketball, volleyball, and track. She has played volleyball since seventh grade and basketball since she was in fourth grade. Hannah plans on continuing to fully participate in all of these sports until she graduates. She has been in Leo Club since sophomore year and in Student Senate since eighth grade. Outside of school related activities, Hannah said, “I literally just like sleeping, eating, and hanging out with friends.” If you see Hannah walking in the hallway stop and say hello. You might just make a new friend! Photo courtesy of Google Images Seniors are not the only ones that should be preparing for their futures. Juniors can, and should, better prepare for their futures by taking their first ACT and looking into different colleges. Seniors should be applying to colleges, going on college visits, and working on the FASFA. If you are a junior, you are permitted one excused day for a college visit. Seniors get three excused days for college visits. Absences due to college visits do not count towards your ten parent notes for the year. It is recommended by college planning websites for juniors to take the PSAT in the fall. High school juniors are also encouraged to start a list of colleges that you would like to receive more information about. Juniors should also take advantage of going to college fairs, college nights, and talking to different admissions counselors. In the spring, juniors should start preparing to take either the SAT or ACT. Most juniors take their first ACT during the late spring or early summer. At this time, juniors should also start looking into different scholarship opportunities and requirements. The best advice for the junior class comes from this year’s seniors. Prepare for a challenging senior year. The college admissions process is a long, rewarding journey and it is best to get an early start. For seniors, at this point you should start hearing from colleges about whether or not you have been accepted. If you have been accepted into a college, make sure you plan a visit to that college! Your acceptance will allow you to focus on questions that will influence your decision such as scholarship opportunities, additional financial aid, and possible involvement activities. Seniors that have been accepted into colleges need to fill out their FASFA no later than June 30, 2016 regardless of which state your selected college is located. At this point you should be making final preparations; finishing scholarship packets, preparing for any last minute tests, filling out financial aid, and making the final decision! The college process can be intimidating and time consuming. In the event that you are stuck in the midst of the college process, or worried about where to begin, these guidelines will help you to move forward. In the event you have additional questions, always visit the guidance office for additional guidelines and information. The JYST Staff would like to wish all students the best of luck in the college process and we hope all students have a great year! Scholarship Timeline By: McKenzie Whalen Editor-in-chief As the year finally winds down and seniors are getting ready to graduate, talk about college and scholarships is in full swing. It is important that many seniors and even juniors are aware of all the opportunities that are available that can help them financially through college. In the guidance office there is always a large amount of scholarships circulating from both local and national organizations. The majority of scholarships are available between January and April. At the end of February a packet including dozens of scholarships were available to any senior eligible or interested. All students who are applying for these scholarships are given a month to complete all of the scholarships that they are interested in or eligible for. While there are so many opportunities available, it is mainly the responsibility of the student to go to the guidance office and request the scholarship information. The local scholarship packets that are currently available in the guidance office are due on March 23 in order to be eligible. Guidance secretary Mrs. Mummert said, “There are a lot of scholarships out there. I encourage any student to apply for any scholarship that they are eligible for, but it is their responsibility to fill them out in order to benefit themselves.” Some advice regarding scholarships that many students, including the upcoming seniors and juniors, should take heed of is that scholarships are essential in making college financially less stressful and more manageable. It is your responsibility as a student to ensure that you are keeping up to date with all scholarship opportunities available to you and to make sure that the guidance office has a valid email address for you that is checked regularly. The guidance office sends regular emails about important scholarship information and graduation updates/reminders to seniors as it becomes available. Mrs. Mummert also stated, “Ask yourself, is it worth an hour of your own time in order to obtain two hundred and fifty to a thousand dollars towards your college tuition and expenses. If you put in the time to apply, it can only help you financially in the future.” All of us here at The JYST highly encourage all upperclassmen, as well as lower classmen, to apply for as many scholarships and grants that are available to them. Take note of how financially important these opportunities are and it will pay off in the end. They ended up having a total of seven wrestlers on the team. Their coaches were Coach Scott Wells and assistant coach, Coach Ben Waldman. The wrestlers went on to compete at sectionals. With five freshmen, one junior, and one senior who participated out of 224 other people, the Rocket wrestlers did very well. Sam Patterson and Tyler Cole went on from sectionals and were two out of 56 Cincinnati wrestlers able to move on to districts this year. The wrestlers have to put in a lot of hard work and dedication this season to try and achieve personal goals that they had set for themselves at the beginning of the season. Coach Wells said, “From the beginning of the year to the end of the year there was a lot of progression.” He expects next year to be very promising and for the team to perform even better than this year. He would like to fill at least 12 out of the 14 weight classes. This year there was one returner and that was junior David Yazell. When asked about his thoughts on wrestling David had some advice. David said, “Doing wrestling is the best choice I've ever made and if anyone is thinking about doing it, just try it for at least two weeks. If it's not for you then that's ok.” If anyone is interested in participating in wrestling for years to come you can speak to Mr. Wells about any questions you may have. As for tips from Mr. Wells, he would like for future wrestlers to work out with other teams and also participate in other sports to help keep up their drive for competition. He also encourages athletes to obtain and work on various skills that will help them in their chosen sport. Everyone here at The JYST would like to congratulate the Clermont Northeastern wrestlers on an outstanding season. We wish all the best for the wrestling team in the seasons and years to come. Girls’s Basketball: Saying Goodbye Photo courtesy of Bailey Wood As you have probably heard, the quiz team has been kicking brains and taking names this year! With Mrs. Hardy as their coach for years now, many of the players have returned year after year and have continued to improve. This year, they proved that they have stepped their brain game up and finished the season undefeated. Their opponents included Blanchester, Goshen, Felicity, New Richmond, Williamsburg, Norwood and more! As their first year going undefeated, many of the members are beyond excited as a majority of the team is made up of seniors. The seniors of Academic Quiz Team are very proud to have finished their final season a record of 11-0! Senior Jessica Shafer said, “We have accomplished something that’s never been done in Clermont Northeastern by going undefeated this season and we are striving to continue to do so.” The Rocket Academic Quiz Team is planning to head to sectionals soon. They have been preparing for this by practicing before and after school for multiple hours. All of their hard work is sure to continue to show. Junior Shelby Joslin said, “Quiz team has been one of the most amazing teams I've been apart of throughout high school. We always work well together and I strongly encourage anyone that is thinking about joining to do it! You don't have to be a genius on every topic to join.” If anyone is interested in joining the quiz team, see Mrs. Hardy for details and tips on how to improve and prepare so you will be ready for next season. Everyone here at The JYST would like to congratulate the Academic Quiz Team on an undefeated season and we wish you the best of luck in sectionals! Boy’s Basketball: Seeing Them Off By: Grace Bush Jyst Staff Reporter By: Grace Bush Jyst Staff Reporter Photo courtesy of Taryn Sanders Senior Night is always a night full of emotions. Seniors and their teammates spend the evening laughing, crying and saying goodbye. This particular night allows seniors the chance to say goodbye and have one last home game with their teammates, family, and friends. At the Senior Night game for the girl’s basketball team, there was a great turn out in the Rowdie section who were there to cheer on all the great players. Senior Night started as the announcer introduced all of the senior players and provided a brief statement about what each senior athlete plans to do with their futures along with their goals that they hope to accomplish as they prepare for graduation. The underclassmen of the team then came out and gave the seniors hugs and gifts to celebrate the end of the season on a great note. Senior Josie Sibert said, “It was a great accomplishment for all of us senior girls. I am more than thankful to finish out my years with these amazing girls.” Parents also received another chance to watch their daughters play one last home game before they get ready go off to college. This year the girl’s basketball team had six very talented seniors they celebrated that night. The Senior Night game was on February 4, 2016 against Felicity. The girls played a very good game that night with Lexie Walker leading in points. Senior Taryn Sanders said, “Senior Night was bittersweet, but getting to spend it with six of my best friends made it a night to remember.” We would like to wish the ladies of the girl’s Varsity basketball team nothing but success on their future endeavors. Best wishes to the 2015-2016 seniors athletes! Photo courtesy of The JYST Staff The ending of a sports season is a sad, but happy event. On one hand the long practices and many games free up the schedules of the athletes, but on the other hand the seniors leave, and the sport does not come back around until next season. At the final home game of the season, Clermont Northeastern sends the senior athletes of each sport off with a celebration. Senior Night is the night where all the seniors get recognized for their athletic accomplishments. On February 12, 2016 CNE hosted Senior Night for boys basketball, cheerleading, and quiz team. It started out by announcing each player and cheerleader. Seniors were announced individ- ually along with those who were escorting them. The announcer also stated what the senior athlete plans on doing after leaving graduation from CNE. Senior Bekah Paytes said, “My favorite part of the night was when they were announcing all of us and all the cheer girls came out and hugged me. I was very impressed with how it went considering it was my first and last season.” After that the announcement of the seniors, events continued as normal. The National Anthem was played, all players and cheerleaders were announced, and the game began. At halftime the cheerleaders performed a routine to a mashup of songs. At the end of the game, the Varsity boys claimed victory over Felicity with a score of 51-41. Senior David Smith said, “Senior Night was a great experience for me because we were able to get one final win on our home court.” After the game, a dinner was provided for the seniors and their families where they could talk about things that had gone on in the season. This dinner gave athletes the chance to spend the night after the last game together, as a team. The seniors are going to be greatly missed, but we can not wait to see all of the new talent that arrives next basketball season. Best wishes to the winter athletes of the Class of 2016! ENTERTAINMENT 8 A Childhood Favorite Returns to the Big Screen Houston, We Have Warm Weather Activities Around News Cincinnati By: Heather Helton By: Emily Huff Jyst Staff Reporter Most of our childhood memories are filled with movies like The Lion King, Toy Story, and Lilo and Stitch. The sequels that followed each of these were also cherished as precious memorabilias from our youth. While still treasured, single movies like Dumbo, Robin Hood, and Finding Nemo seemed to always leave us questioning “What next?” There might finally be answers for at least one of our favorite childhood films for “What happens after the end of the first movie?” For this year alone, Disney is releasing Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, The Finest Hours, Zootopia, The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, The BGF, Pete’s Dragon, Doctor Strange, Moana, Star Wars Anthology: Rouge One, and more! Finally, 13 years after the orig- inal was released, there is a follow up movie to a beloved childhood film. Finding Dory is to be released June 17 of this year. Sophomore Erica Noonan said, “I’m so excited for this movie. Dory is my favorite characters and I have waited years for this movie.” With many of the voices being kept the same, including Ellen DeGeneres as Dory. Senior Kelsey Herndon said, “I'm extremely excited for ‘Finding Dory’ to come out. Dory was my favorite character and she was really funny so the movie should be hilarious!" The excitement of this upcoming film led many to believe the theaters are sure to be packed, and not just with children either. Our generation has waited many years for this film, so do not be surprised if you see teenagers and young adults crowding into the theaters among younger children to watch the much waited for movie. Super Bowl 50: Broncos vs. Panthers By: Hannah Ross Jyst Staff Reporter Photo courtesy of Google Images February 7, 2016 was the big day, and by that we are talking about Super Bowl 50. The Denver Broncos took on the Carolina Panthers in the 2016 Super Bowl and came out with the win. The Broncos dominated the game 24 to 10 over the Panthers. Leading the Denver Broncos defense to the win was defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. The Denver defense is being called NFL’s best defense of the season, and is also said to be near impenetrable. The Panthers loss is not to say they did not play well. The Carolina offensive line’s performance was said to be of the high-powered variety all season and this showed greatly during the big game. Aside from the scores, plays, and technicalities of the game, the Super Bowl event is one of the largest events of the year. The Super Bowl brings many individuals together to enjoy the time with our families and friends. One thing we gather together to watch are all the Super Bowl commercials. Junior Jordan Stanforth said, “I enjoyed the game and commercials a lot, the commercials were really entertaining and both teams played pretty good, but I was rooting for the Broncos!” There were many different opinions about which commercial was ranked the best out of this year’s advertisements, but our fellow classmates have some opinions on their personal favorites. Senior Riley Reynolds said, “I like the one with Kevin Hart in it, he is really funny so it made the commercial super fun to watch.” Aside from the unique and humorous commercials, this year’s halftime performance had something for everyone. Coldplay, Bruno Mars, and Beyoncé performed their current and past hits. The three musical acts also paid tribute to Super Bowl performances from the past 50 years. With the history and the variety of music, the halftime show had something for everyone. Senior Kaitlyn Stephenson said, “I really enjoyed the halftime show. The musical performances were very enjoyable and very entertaining. It was a nice break from the game, and overall fantastic!” Super Bowl 50 in its entirety was an entertaining and fun event. From the team showdown itself, to the funny commercials and the energetic halftime show, it was something a variety of viewers could enjoy. Now that Super Bowl 50 is over and in the books, we can now start focusing again on our favorite team and hoping to find them in next year’s Super Bowl! There is the Presidential Election in full swing as the candidates prepared for Super Tuesday. This election decides which candidates will represent their party in the Presidential Election in November. As for the results of Super Tuesday, Donald Trump claimed the most victories for the Republican party and Hillary Clinton had the most wins for the Democratic party. The Ohio election is on March 15, 2016, so those eligible and interested in voting, please make your voice heard! Cloud seeding is when an airplane flies into dense clouds and releases flares into the clouds which will help increase the rainfall in that region. Virgin Galactic is creating a commercial spaceship that will take guests into space and flies them around the planet. If you want a seat on the spacecraft, the cost is $250,000. During a recent two week period, there was a ceasefire in Syria. The Syrian Government and the rebel forces were involved in this ceasefire, but the Islamic State and al- Qaeda were not. The purpose was to provide aid for the civilians in Syria and attempt to have peace talks. However, during the ceasefire there was an airstrike that nobody has claimed responsibility for. The United Nations has been providing aid for people in the region as well as holding peace talks to get the truce be permanent.
