Some members have already taken the initiative to send me pointers to relevant articles. Send to: pleduc@gmail.com Thanks! Remembrance Day, 2015 Membership Renewals R T emembrance Day this year has been recorded in video by local Fenelon Falls resident and videographer, Chris Greaves, known as GrandpaChris on the net. Chris made two videos and uploaded them to YouTube. he early bird renewal program is now over, and we will be announcing the winners of the free membership draws shortly. For those that have renewed for 2016, we thank you! Please keep in mind that in order to maintain your membership in good standing, you must renew before January 31, 2016. The first is of the Candlelight Parade and Vigil on November 10th. Click on the image below to watch this video. Membership renewal forms are available on our website here. This is a PDF form, that you should be able to fill out online. If your browser does not allow you to process forms, simply download and save the form, then open it with Acrobat Reader. It is preferable to fill out the form and print it, as it makes our job easier in deciphering your handwriting. :-) Alternatively, you can get a renewal form at the Branch. Renewal fees are the same as last year: $60.00 The second video is of our Remembrance Day Service on November 11th. Click on the image below to watch this video. New Telephone Scam L oreen Parsons wrote to advise of a new telephone scam that is going around. And I personally know of a close friend who was affected by this, and was so shaken up by this that she drove 30 minutes to her nearest police station for ‘protection’. Apparently, the caller was so convincing that he said he was coming over to her house with the police to arrest her if she did not immediately pay up. From the CRA website: “Some recent telephone scams involve threatening taxpayers or using aggressive and forceful language to scare them into paying fictitious debt to the CRA. Victims receive a phone call from a person claiming to work for the CRA and saying that taxes are owed. The caller requests immediate payment by credit card or convinces the victims to purchase a prepaid credit card and to call back immediately with the information. The taxpayer is often threatened with court charges, jail or deportation.” Chris has made videos of other Legion events in the past, as well as other events in the community. You are welcome to subscribe to his channel to see other videos and be advised when he posts new material on YouTube. The Missing Photo For more information, visit the CRA website. I n the last issue, you may have noticed one photo missing from the Honours & Awards.. i.e., the photographer. Rob MacArthur took this one of your editor receiving his 5-year pin and PRO Service Bar. Thanks Rob! General Meeting J ust a reminder that there are no general meetings in December or January. Hope to see you all back in February after the holidays! Page 2 PUBLIC SERVICE HEALTH CARE AND DENTAL PLANS (TAXABLE) T he following information was passed along to me by Jackie Walter. I did a few searches on the net, and the information seems creditable. If this applies to you, please check it out as soon as possible: (Info provided by Dave Paris of the Edmonton Airborne Social Club www.airbornesocialclub.ca ) For those who may not already know this, you may wish to make calls to get yourself registered for your tax purposes. I personally made calls today and was told my letter would be delivered early/ mid-February each year hereafter, as long as I continue to make premium payments. Additionally, I was advised because I had not previously claimed this I could go back 10 years and make claim for the total years that I paid premiums. When you call and confirm your premiums, ensure you check to see if you have ever claimed so that you can take advantage of the 10 year timeframe Below gives highlighted information that I confirmed today. Check it out if you have not already. Thanks to Mike Bedel for this information. Dave Paris Canadian Forces Pensioners receive a T4 from Specialized Services Division, However, the T4 DOES NOT include the premiums paid to PSHCP or Dental plans. PSHCP and Dental Plan premiums are claimable. In order to get a tax letter to accompany your tax return you must make confirmation with both plans at numbers indicated below. Your name will be placed in a database for this and future years as long as you continue to make premium payments. Once you have registered, you need not ask every year as you will continue to get a yearly submission for your tax return. Legion Supply T he new Legion Supply Catalogue for 2015-2016 is now out, and contains updates and new items. It can be viewed online or at the Branch. Just a reminder, you can save on shipping costs by ordering through the Branch. I submit orders twice a month as needed. Our inventory sale continues, and I have updated the catalogue of our remaining inventory to show the number of items remaining in stock. You can view this list here: Inventory Sale We still have a number of Legion Dress items, as well as new pins and medals for sale at the regular catalogue prices. Click here for a list of our remaining inventory. We have one Victory Pocket Watch remaining.. Sale priced at $10. It is in the display case by the bar. Ask the bar steward if you are interested. PSHCP (Health) # 1-800-267-6542 / Dental # 1-800-267-0350 PLEASE NOTE: the Meat Roll this month will be held on Dec 12 during the Branch Christmas Party. Page 3 Report on Military Suicides Merits a Deeper Look T he following is a report from the Toronto Star, dated November 13, 2015: Silent Auction T he Silent Auction continues to bring in a steady stream of revenue for the Branch each month - and we would like to thank Marion Blair for starting this initiative, as well as the members who have been taking an active participation in this event, both bidding and buying, as well as making contributions. A new selection of items is now on the table for December— this month, all items have a Christmas related theme. Bidding closes on the 18th. Anyone having new, or equivalent to new, items they wish to donate to the table, please leave with the Bar Steward - Thanks! Statistically insignificant. That’s a chilling term to describe fluctuation of suicide rates in the Canadian military. But in the context of a newly released Surgeon General report that studied suicides among service personnel between 1995 and 2014, it’s also the crucial finding. You might not have realized that key takeaway from the exhaustive document released Tuesday, unless reading deep into the stories that were subsequently published. Read the full article here... Community Christmas Dinner O nce again this year, the Branch will be hosting a complimentary Christmas Dinner for the Fenelon community. No one should be alone or without a delicious meal on Christ- Jamie Oliver Stamps W e are doing amazingly well with Jamie Oliver stamps, and we want to thank you very much for donating your stamps to the Legion. We have collected 3 books full so far, enough for 3 knives. I case you were not aware, Sobeys currently is running a Jamie Oliver food stamps campaign. One stamp is given for every $10 spent on groceries. The stamps can be later redeemed for Jamie Oliver knives. If you shop at Sobeys and do not collect the stamps, please consider asking for them and donating to the Legion, so we could get some new sharp knives for the kitchen. If you already collect them and would like to donate them to the Branch, it would be greatly appreciated. You can drop off your stamps with the bar steward. mas, and Branch 238 hopes to make that a reality. If you are going to be on your own, why not join us for a full course turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Or if you know of someone in the community who will be alone on Christmas, please extend this invitation. Perhaps more importantly, if you know of someone who is shut in, unable to get out— maybe at Fenelon Court or another care center— and you have some free time, why not arrange to pick them up and bring them into the Branch to share Christmas dinner. All we ask is that you call us to confirm your attendance, so that we can ensure there is enough food to go around. See the full page flyer on the next page for more information.
