Cool Calming
Coorg
Editor’s note
Just after my post graduation exams
all I really needed was a reboot button
which would refresh my mind and body
completely. So my parents and I headed
to Club Mahindra Kodagu Valley Resort,
Coorg. This was our second visit to Coorg
(we had been to RCI resort Orange County
around six years back), but our first to the
Club Mahindra Coorg Resort.
The warm welcome, the ambience along
with a very humble and receptive staff
made our stay a truly memorable one.
After many long and memorable years of being associated with
RCI in Europe, it feels wonderful to be back here in India.
That’s another destination (or should I say, destinations) off
my bucket list…
I still remember the good old days when I used to accompany
my parents to meet our family in Punjab. And I always yearned
for more, to truly experience the sights and sounds of India.
Holidaying here in India is not what it used to be, about only
heading back to your hometown during the summer vacations.
It is now about taking frequent breaks, about new adventures
and experiencing the new. About actually creating a bucket list
of places to visit. This I think is a welcome move.

MistY-Eyed in Manali
As Bill Bryson said:
“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience
everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so
familiar it is taken for granted.”
We took a week-long holiday
at Sterling White Mist, Manali
where all rooms have a small
balcony facing the snow
capped mountains a divine view.
Needless to say, you have taken that first step by investing in timeshare. Committing
you and your family to a lifetime of new adventures beyond the horizon.
And we at RCI are only too glad to provide you with the opportunities of welcome
escapes around the world. By last count, at over 4000 affiliated resorts around the world,
with over a 100 of them in India alone. Not only this, we have made it easier and quicker
for our members to choose and book holidays. RCI resorts and services are easily accessible
at www.rci.com and you can even get added savings. I would advise you to activate your
online account and stay abreast of all that is happening in the world of travel and at RCI.
In this issue of Endless Vacation, we turn the spotlights on eight delightful destinations
across the globe. We travel from the south-east part of USA, a must see family destination,
Florida (ticked off my bucket list in 2011), to a group of islands that are located in the
Atlantic Ocean bordering the Caribbean sea, the Bahamas. To one of the northern most
parts of Europe, Finland. We take a short detour to charismatic Kenya, before we head
towards the Great Wall of China, and lastly, dive into the surfing capital of the world,
Gold Coast.
And finally, we round it up with two Indian destinations that are on my current bucket
list, the breathtaking Sahyãdris and God’s Own Country – Kerala.
And if by the end of the magazine you still do not have a bucket list, I urge you make
one soon, for it is one sure way to experience the unexperienced and make the most of your
timeshare investment.
Happy holidaying!

ith 378 resorts across land and coastline to spoil
you silly, pick from the world’s most magical
fantasylands, dream-time beaches, space travels,
crazy golfing, nature, tantalising public art,
sumptuous dining, cycling, kayaking, snorkeling and shopping that
will keep you going for a long while.
HOLIDAY THEME
There is much to do, but for a child on board or the child within,
begin your holiday fairytale at Disney World resorts, Orlando.
Dream a million dreams in the land of princesses, beaches,
waterfalls, green savannahs, pine forests, lakes, desert sands,
treasure islands, caves and lots more. And live them all, as fourlegged exotic animals share your breakfast. After 8000 acres of
sheer magic, you’ll be in its spell.
Take that dream into Universal Studios and ride on the
movies before you move on to SeaWorld Adventure Park to
calm those nerves again. If that leaves you wanting for more,
hit the race tracks at Daytona beaches – you might just catch a
local league match if you’re lucky.
Close by, the Kennedy Space Center will prove to be an
experience you will remember, so don’t forget to book your
time there. Finishing with a head-long skydive might be just
the thing to write home about if you don’t have the energy for
more Florida.
BEYOND DISNEY
Orlando’s enchantment carries on into nearby Kissimmee,
where crocodile tracks, golfing fairways and period theme
parks thrill, amaze and relax in turns.
Nothing is in moderation here, as even your trusted iron
will swing a new course at the fantasy golf resorts on river
beds and mad thrill rides. Off the greens, ground reality

When
to
Florida has
essentially two seasons:
wet and dry. Winter, Florida’s
dry season, is from November
to April. Temperatures are lower,
there’s less humidity and rain, and
it’s the ideal time to hike, canoe and
explore nature.
And just when you think you’re done,
the white sands of Panama City
Beach beckon to take you on another
sublime adventure into marine depths
and sea life, terrestrial zoos and more
high-speed thrills and adventures of
the machine kind.
But after you’ve proved your point
at the Race City PCB, you might
find it hard not to raise a toast,
aboard the Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise,
to … rum!
Again, this is a place with much
more than sun and sand. Pick a day
and make it count.
And just so you don’t miss out on a
swig of culture, plan a day cruise into
yachting major Fort Lauderdale and,
further, into metropolitan Miami.
Renowned for their diverse art, music
and cuisine, these are the lavish bits
of Florida you want a piece of.
If nature is your calling, though,
carry on down South, into the
Everglades. A vast region of
wetlands, this is a complex and
symbiotic ecosystem of swamps,
mangroves, tropical woods, rock,
pine slopes and marine paradise. A
must-see for the entire family, this
is one of only three wetlands that
UNESCO has designated as globally
significant. While your kids will
stumble on some impressive history
to share with pals and intellectuals
back home, the environmentalist
in you might just begin a personal
crusade – don’t miss it.

As warm and cheerful as the seas that

you with their genuineness. So, enjoy
their hospitality and leave a million

Snorkel amidst the fish, teasing their
paths around you … touch one! Or
go horse-riding along the turquoise
sea with the wind in your hair. Surf

or simply sail away into alluring Cays

Of course, tasting local flavours

narrow streets are lined with British
forts and villages replete with stories

ascend the 66 steps of the Queen’s
Staircase and descend into the
humility of shallow waters coloured
with coral gardens humming sweet
melodies of the sea.
Up west, Cable Beach will cajole
you into its powdery white sands
sprinkled with restaurants, resorts,
casinos and a golf course. Keep the
busy bodies smitten with water-skiing,
scuba diving, parasailing and bananaboat riding, while the fashionista
stocks up on shell jewellery.

SAIL AWAY...
Wander some more and soak in the
natural splendour of the Bahamas all
over again, on a cruise of the Abaco

of Abaco shelters the islands from the
Atlantic Ocean and keeps them calm
and warm. Sun bathe on the softest
beaches you’ve known and angle in
heavy-duty fish for the albums!
TWINKLING TWILIGHTS

that these exquisite ecosystems also

The Grand Bahamas are home to
the region’s conservation centres.

WALLS OF WAR
Seldom does change come without
strife. The Great Wall of China
is that mascot of Chinese military
strategy which stands in testimony
to centuries of conflict on these
mountain ranges.
Beijing was the capital of the

were particularly reinforced. But
it is not just the raw beauty of this
eighth wonder of the world or its
architectural genius or even misty
mountains and woods beyond, that

make your excursion memorable.
The Great Wall Museum in
Badaling is a fabulous repertoire of
the Wall’s rich history. Together with
complete military facilities that are
the Great Wall’s raison d’être, the
wall itself resembles a giant dragon
guarding its posts. With a moat on
both sides of the wall and several
other impressive defenses, this was an
impenetrable fortress then and is the
most visited section now.
The Beijing wall snakes

continuing similarly into
the rest of China.

Reflecting these are the spectacular
lakes of Huanghuacheng. And
together with Gueibeko’s double
lined sections across perilous terrain,
all daring will be fulfilled. The
wilderness around these primitive
walls, make for a fabulous photo

LIVING HISTORY
Just offshore, this tranquil scene bursts
into the bustle of the cosmopolitan
and thriving port town of Mombasa,
where a history of traditional sailing
dhows lives on with the modern buzz
of commercial liners.
Anchored in an exotic past and
unhurried through centuries of toil,
narrow streets wind their way through
the aromas of myriad spices and

PANORAMIC PARADOX
A lot may have has been lost to the
ravages of time but nature has her
way of remaining indispensable.
Straddling the equator on Africa’s
Eastern coast, this little country is a
topographical phenomenon.
While relaxing environs of the
highly protected Mombasa Marine

its 230 varieties of birds and dense

urchins, jelly fish, starfish and sea
cucumbers. And without a care, do
what beach lovers do best – lie back
and reclaim your right on the sun

diving into fish schools, wind surfing
and water skiing.
But after that, embark on the
original jungle safari, on the
boundless savannah of Tsavo.
Teeming with exotic game, these
massive grasslands are peppered with
rocky scarps and granitic ridges.
Kenya is a year
round destination:
January and February are hot
and dry, and the animals gather
round the water sources. March to
May is the green season with short
showers and bursts of sunshine. July
to September are the country’s coolest
months. October to January is also
a delightful time to visit Kenya and
compares to springtime - the days are
warm and the evenings cool. Short,
scattered rains fall in November.
This is also a good time for
snorkelling and diving
off the coast.
WILD AND WONDERFUL

every year, marks the
Great Annual Migration.
A vision to behold,
millions of Wildebeest
with hundreds of
thousands of Zebras and

tucked away from the daily drudge,
these are conveniently close to home.
Rugged, scenic and utterly
relaxing, these mountain ranges can
resuscitate the weariest. One of the
eight ‘hottest hotspots of biological
diversity’ on our planet, the Western
Ghats is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. Home to some of the
most prosperous rainforests in India,
with countless indigenous species
of flora and fauna, the healing this
region provides mother Earth, could
well be the perfect refuge for the
harried city animal in you too.
And when the clouds open up
with generous rainfall, the lushness
of green and crisp-aired dewy
mornings that linger in its wake hit
new crescendos in the chilly winds
of winter. On the misty flat-topped
Western Ghats, they become dreams
of another world. Discover these
enchanting trails from the languid
foothills of Pune, Panchgani,
Lonavala and the hill city of Lavasa.

Highway to Heaven
The world knows Kerala for its
labyrinthine backwaters. Alleppey,
with its vast web of canals, lakes and
lagoons, is fondly christened the
‘Venice of the East.’
Rent a houseboat and relax in the
emerald routes of exotic coconutlined avenues or set about in a
catamaran to discover the charms of
village life, connected seamlessly
along these hydro-highways.
Coastal Concoction
Each aspect of culinary flourish is intrinsic to the
history, geography and beliefs of the region it comes
from. Make it a point to taste the Tapioca and Fish
curry for a coastal classic or devour the Malabar
Biryani for its delectable burst of flavours. A hearty
swig of fresh Toddy would make a perfect finish.
Patience
Practice
Perfection
W
hile the lush Western Ghats cascade
its luxuriant tresses
into the unassuming
charms of pastoral coastal dwelling, a
gentle breeze waves past nonchalant
palm fronds skirting the Arabian Sea
beyond. Stand quietly and pay keen
attention… you’ll hear the winds
humming tales of merchants, saints
and many settlers that have shaped
the persona of Kerala. And yet,
staunch traditions and beliefs
retain their power over land, ethos
and cuisine.
26 | JUL - DEC 2013
How such a narrow strip of land
can sustain so many geographical and
cultural differences, is a true marvel.
But from the first step you set on its
soil, you will begin to experience a
reassuring detachment from all that
has bogged you down.
MYSTICAL, MAGICAL
Anytime is a good time to find your
peace in the endless harmonies of
ocean waves, rustic boats and coconut
palms along Kovalam’s delightful
beaches separated by rugged rock.
Surrender to the calm of yoga and
ancient aromatic Ayurvedic massage
therapies as you meditate to the
sounds of the sea and soak in the
ocean air. Chiselled by Portuguese,
Dutch and British colonisers, Kannur
is another Malabar town unflinching
in its strong traditions, with Theyyam
trance performances being the most
spectacular traditional highlight.
Deep inland, along the ghats,
another trance awaits in the sprawling
plantations of Munnar, where tea
gardens glow over rolling hills and
breath-taking woods and lakes. The
magical forests of Thekkady, 4000ft
above sea level, are no less haunting.
Strike a high in aromas of spice
plantations and watch the wild from
close. To unleash the beast in you,
climb robust rocks and bamboo-raft
down rapids to release all wear. And
pack a bit of quietude too − you can
treasure it for ever, while you claim
your fortune of exquisite jewellery
from trendsetter, Kottayam.
Modern progress has
not dislodged the core
sensibilities that guide
Kerala and its people.
while Kathakali vibrantly
blends ancient religion
and evolving theatre,
Equally dominating
and most poetic in
its perfection is the
martial arts tradition
of Kalarippayatu with
its anti-gravity moves.
Witness and believe.
A city with many ‘firsts’ to its credit, rubber
and spices ooze out of Kottayam, nature’s
nook of benevolence. Keeping these spice ways
prosperous, is Cashew Country, Kollam.
Fragrant in her legacy of yore, Kollam flaunts
a tapestry rich in antiquity and is sensational
in its backdrop of lakes and narrow waterhighways. The stories you hear here, on your
way to panoramic Alleppey, will be worth
every moment of your precious while. At the
centre for prawn farming and coir industries,
water-logged rice fields spread out against
a background especially created by a higher
power. Enjoy a local meal and then partake of
the frenzy of boat races that the world waits
upon Kerala for. And if you plan an Onam
break, you’re in for the regalia of your life.
One consideration: Keep a back-up plan
for those waiting at home − you might just
forget to return, you see.

All that glitters is gold in this city of sunshine,
sand, sea life and rainforests of yore.
T
he Aussie zest for life is
infectious at the least and
when you think ‘holiday’,
there are few places on the
planet with as many treasures on
offer. From jet-boating to windsurfing
and 100 million year old rainforests
to glitzy concrete jungles, the spirit is
always high here. The choice is yours,
really – boogie by the beach or tango
in the technicolour ecstasy of the sea!
RIDING THE WAVE
Modern, fresh and always buzzing,
this is the life! The birthplace of the
bikini, these golden sands are never
quiet. For beach-ballers, water sport
enthusiasts and surfers of all skills,
Surfers’ Paradise is exactly what
it promises. Catch the high waves
by the beach or scuba dive into the
exciting world of coral gardens and
shipwrecks and dodge around turtles,
sharks and manta rays. And if you
think you are astride a rainbow,
maybe you are! Purple sea urchins,
green clams, crimson starfish, pink
sponges, curious fish in bright
blue and shocking yellow… every
conceivable colour from the spectrum
darts right around you. Surely, the
leprechaun’s pot of gold can’t be far!
So hunt around. And once you’ve
stumbled on the theme parks,
get yourself a koala cuddle with
hopping kangaroos for company, at
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
With so much going on, you will
be hungry. Often. And studded with
world-class restaurants and classy
bars, Gold Coast is just the place
for it. Yes, you can have it all. Only,
make sure you don’t rush anything.
SUNNY SIDE UP
The good life knows no bounds on these shores that
transform into the Sunshine Coast further North.
Glamorous in its blend of swank city culture and subtropical natural bliss are the laid-back and relaxing
luxuries of Noosa, where sophisticated spas, boutiques
and fine dining strike a happy contrast with tropical
rainforests, indigenous flora and fauna and a surprising
reef system just beyond Noosa Heads.
and Gold Coast. Leisurely, stroll through Brizzy’s markets,
theatres and art galleries or hop onto a river cruise and
meander through its many twists. And climb! The skyline
view from Story Bridge is a dream and so is the rush of
abseiling off Kangaroo Point cliffs. If you’d rather ogle
from above, hitch a helicopter ride or tandem skydive into
the fabulous city scape.

NATURE’S
CORNUCOPIA
“Timeless”, comes close to describing
this miracle of creation. As inspiring
as their aboriginal heritage of stone
art are the Australian Gondwanan
forests of the Gold Coast Hinterland,
a pre-historic legend full of native
surprises that have retained
their primitive charms. Ancient,
magnificent and blessed with Earth’s
abundance, the rainforest’s towering
canopy overhead and
the busyness of the reef
barrier below, abound in
fantastic stories longing
to be told. Take a dreamy
walk in heritage national
parks within and enjoy
the spectacular sights of
deep gorges, crystalline
waterfalls and glittering
waterholes.
Cut to an entirely
different scene en route
to Mount Tambourine
with its quaint highland
trails and end the day
in the comfort of a wine
boutique, with a soothing
Australian classic.

RCI recommends - Finland
Design, duty and dare-devilry neatly define
this nature’s nook, where serenity and verve are
never more than half an hour apart.
A destination for
the discerning, we
give you 37 resorts
to choose from.

Finland
Contemplations of the East with
the panache of the West = understated perfection
40 | JUL - DEC 2013
Pictures courtesy: Visit Finland (www.visitfinland.com)
ou know this little country
as the creator of Kone,
Marimekko and Nokia.
Now, prepare to be
stunned… like never before.
Shhhhhh…
Away from the din of life and
languish, release your worries upon
the great Laplands, cross-country
skiing down Nordic slopes. And
breathe… Hold conversations with a
silence you’ll discover more and more
of and hear ‘peace,’ literally whisper
in your ear.
Open your mind and let no one
interrupt your incredible treks at
Pyhatunturi, where only little furry
beings will scamper in your path.
For braver pursuits, the tranquil Fell
trails of the Pyhä-Luosto are well
marked and if the cold gets to you,
warm up, rest or even cook yourself
a snack in the lean-tos and kotas
dotted all along these meticulously
conserved forests.
An alternative, albeit without the
larger runs and chairlifts, are the
safer slopes of Sallantunturi. Perfect
for beginners and families with
children, these are less frequented
and as picturesque as anywhere else
in the Arctic. More reindeer rides
and snowmobile safaris mark the
trails of Akaslompolo and Kuusamo
where the shimmer of the winter
sun dazzles through ice and snow to
make for the perfect polar escapade.
And when you surrender to the
psychedelic spectacle of the Northern
Lights that often streak the night
skies, remember to say Hello to
Santa Claus, the next day. You will
find him by that fabled post office
clocking 700,000 letters addressed to
him, every year!
Temperatures are scaling down and autumn will bring in
vivacious ruska hues transcending ever so gently to colder
blue tones when pristine white fields transform into the
winter wonderland of many a charmed traveller.

Privileges
go
When
to
This is one place in life where time and
space become your holding and you risk
but a choice. And considering that the
choice is between great design, great
culture and great outdoors every day, you
won’t sweat a bead.
For plenty of pure
white snow, December
to March is ideal. For long
summer days and relaxing
by the thousands of lakes,
June to August is best.
Experience another realm of
view, valour and wandering in the
Lakelands. True to the Finnish
penchant for the extreme, this region
is huge on water sports and worldfamous national parks.
Do the Finn thing − take a dip in
an ice hole and laugh into the echoes.
Or dip into ancient obscurity with
well-informed guides at museums.
You may well create your own
storyboard on the downhill runs
of Tahkovuori or when you amble
into petite Poorvo where it is quite
something to cycle along vast pine
trails, with the breeze from the
archipelago strumming your face.
Earth’s Cleanest Water
So far, they have counted
55,000 lakes, crystal
clear and pure.
Look in and catch your
own bit of sky.
42 | JUL - DEC 2013
Back at base, unwind in the embraces
of rejuvenating spas, but don’t forego
a stroll in the quaint streets and
maybe even indulge your quirk with a
curio or two.
YOU, YOURSELF
AND THOU
A journey into Finland would be
incomplete without eclectic jaunts
into the world of Carl Ludvig Engel,
the German architect, whose tribute
to neoclassicism can be seen in the
pediments of Lutheran Cathedral and
all over Senate Square.
But if it is the here and now that
keeps you grounded, hop into a
Culture Train and rock to the band
playing live. Life sings a serene tune in
this endless sanctuary of contrasts that
stand together and yet apart.
Remember, a quick-fix city moment
is only minutes away with its ebullient
markets for fashion and functionality
in their most evolved forms.
