Townsend Named New Clinical Director
Remembering Susan Mickens
By Gene Campbell
Right up to the end Susan Mickens was
coming into her office at the County
Administration building and making sure the
paper work was up to date and in order for the
upcoming Presidential election. Susan, King
William County General Registrar since
January 1, 2007, lost her battle with cancer on
September 27, 2016. Born July 4, 1956 and a
graduate of West Point High School, Susan
started her career with the county in 1989
serving as a receptionist and worked part time
in the registrar office before becoming general
registrar.
Please see REMEMBERING SUSAN
MICKENS, on page 12.

When the late Maxie Broaddus of Sparta, VA began showing his regionally famous monster
truck, Walking Tall, little did he know the circuitous route the truck would take. Broaddus first
introduced his truck locally at small gatherings, community events, birthday parties, and
children’s events. From the onset, his intention was to do it for the children, with the motto “IT’S
ALL ABOUT THE KIDS” emblazoned on the side of the truck.

The rain didn't dampen the spirits of
those attending the King William
Republican Party "get together" on
Saturday October 8 at the King William
Ruritan Park. Local republicans gathered
and mingled while eating delicious
hamburgers and hot dogs cooked on the
grill by John Hubbard. Chairman
Cecil Schools said this was not a fund
raiser or a membership drive just a "good
ole fashion" picnic while distributing
some campaign signs and stickers for the
upcoming election.

Bees and Mules
By Allen Brintley and “Pip”
My hand is itching this morning
while I’m writing this article. The
reason is because a couple of days
ago while working around the fence
in the pasture, I stumbled on some
ground bees and got stung pretty
good. Under cover of darkness, I
returned and eliminated the problem.
I know Pip doesn’t like bees or wasps
much either. I remember one time
she got stung while out grazing. I
happened to be close and saw her
reaction. Poor old Pip took off so
quick and was kicking so high, I
thought she was in a rodeo. I’m glad
that I wasn’t on her back when it
happened.
I try to keep watch around the barn
for bees and wasp nests. They like to
build them under the eaves and
inside. I know they are trying to stay
out of the weather but they can cause
problems for you and your animals.
One place that they like to build a
nest is in or under our trailers. A
horse trailer is something that we
don’t use everyday and we need to
look for them when we do our safety
check before use. I remember a
couple of years ago getting in the
back of Pip’s trailer to check on the
side panels and hooks and heard a
buzzing. I looked to the rear and just
above the back door up in the corner
was a big wasp nest. That was a
disaster waiting to happen if I had not
seen them before loading Pip. Now
after hooking up and checking the
lights, brakes, tire pressure, etc. I
always check all of the interior and
even under the floor where they like
to build nests. It should be part of
everyone’s safety check list for your
trailer.
Here are a couple of bee jokes for
the kids or for the kid in you.
Why do bees have sticky hair?
Because they use honey combs!
Where do bees sit?
On their bee-hinds! You can email
me at Allen@TwinRiversRealty.com
or call 690-7870. I’ll see you on the
trails.

SHARON BAPTIST CHURCH HOLDS BAZAAR
By Florence Cooke
Despite a rainy Saturday morning,
many dedicated people, including
church members and the community, came out for Sharon Baptist’s
Church annual Fall Bazaar on October 8th, from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Some of the outdoor activities had
been cancelled but tents had been
strategically placed so nobody got
wet. There were local vendors, a
silent auction, yard sale, bake sale,
and food so everyone could find
something special to take home.
The proceeds from this event go to
the church’s annual mission trip to
Haiti in February. Sharon has been doing ongoing mission work in Haiti for the last 20
years. This year’s project was to complete an orphanage but according to Chris Wilson, one of the chairmen of the event, “This year we will be offering support in any
way possible in light of Hurricane Matthew. The Lord has blessed us with the support
of the community today in spite of a rainy day. This event is a team effort by the whole
church. We hope that we are able to show God’s love to our community and wherever
it is needed.”

Southern Belle Band playing your favorite country and classic rock tunes
By Gene Campbell
Friday October 14 was a beautiful fall
day for the Annual King William Ruritan
Club Octoberfest. Approximately 150
people gathered at the Ruritan Facilities
on Rt 30 to "chow down" on some
delicious BBQ and fixens prepared by the
club members.....and then "kicked up their
heels" while listening to the sounds of the
Southern Belle Band.
The Club thanks everyone for coming
out and supporting this fund raising
event. Money raised from this event and
others throughout the year goes back to
the community in the form of donations to
charitable organizations.
ENJOYING THE NIGHT OUT.....The Ruritans gave the McClure family (left to
right...Jen, Brooklynn and Jay) free tickets to the Octoberfest. Jay who serves in the

Fire Safety Week takes
place during the month of
October, however, fire departments designate the second
week of October as Fire Prevention Week. The purpose of
Fire Prevention Week is to
raise awareness of the dangers of fire and aids people in
preparing for fire threats.
Fire Chief Andy Aigner asked Walkerton
and other King William agencies to observe
Fire Prevention Week. Walkerton hosted an
open house on Saturday, October 8, from 10
a.m. – 2 p.m. to educate the community by
showing their equipment and promoting fire
safety in the home.
One of the services to the community is
providing and installing fire detectors to the
service area in King and Queen and King
William. Batteries in smoke detectors need
to be tested often and it is recommended that
the batteries be changed in the Spring and
Fall when the time changes. Smoke detectors can awaken family members when
smoke is detected in a home. Smoke detectors should be on every floor, hallways and
every bedroom.
It is also recommended that all homes have
at least one working fire extinguisher. Most
fire extinguishers have expiration dates. If
the date is expired, disregard and another

one. It can also be serviced by companies
that do this type of work. Baking soda
should be kept in the kitchen for grease and
stove fires.
If there are children in the home, practice
fire escape routes, making sure that everyone knows where to go in case of fire. When
the fire department gets on scene, they can
determine if everyone is safe.
Frankie and Susie Barham looked at a lot
of places to create a location where
weddings and events could take place.
The retired Powhatan couple stopped
looking when they were shown Hollyfield
in King William. After extreme
restoration, the historic eighteenth century
home overlooking a serene 28 acre lake
and lush farmland is now available for
weddings and special events.
The Barham’s children Jessica, Elizabeth
and Jason were involved with the
restoration; Jessica is also involved in the
catering part of the business. Tracy
Gilland with 15 years experience in the
wedding industry is on board to help make
your wedding or special event a treasured
memory.
Frankie Barham said, “The folks here in Owners, Frankie and Susie Barham with
events coordinator Tracy Gilland.
King William have been so kind to us, and
we also want to thank the Mills family for
all their help in this endeavor.”
You won’t meet a nicer couple than Frankie and Susie Barham. King William is
blessed to have them move to our County.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
Just My 2 Cents
Dear Editor,
A lesson in how it happens.
I thought I would share a quick editorial on the
roadside sign I see on my daily commute home from
work. I serviced 21 years in the United States Army
active duty in defense of our country and our way of
life. So, I get it. It’s the individual’s right to display
his/her poorly stenciled art work on their property.
Most days I get a good laugh about the over spray and
the attempt at stating his/her views in a sign “tweet”.
However, on my commute home on October 5, 2016
there was a new message on the roadside sign that
actually concerned me. It referenced our newly hired
County Fire Chief and included false or misleading
comments about a request for two (2) assistants. Also
displayed on the poorly crafted sign was the Chief’s
salary. Why this is important I’m not clear on. For
someone with his qualifications, responsibilities, and
being on call 24 hours 7 days a week, I think we got a
great deal.
At the County Board of Supervisors work session on
3 October 2016 the Chief requested two (2) part-time
UNPAID VOLUNTEER Assistant Fire Marshalls to
assist in performing fire inspections of the County’s
800 businesses and to support fire investigations. The
Chief further explained there would be minimum cost
to support the effort and he could absorb the cost in
his budget. All the Board members had an opportunity to ask questions. Some of the questions weren’t
well thought out and displayed a lack of understanding.
In closing, at all levels of government we have some
form of open records request whereby you as a citizen
can get the facts. If you don’t like what you hear or
see contact the County at (804) 769-3011 and get the
facts.
I live by the following quote and invite others to join
me, “You either have to be part of the solution, or
you're going to be part of the problem”.
Reading from official county documents the new
Fire Marshall has requested he be given 2 assistants. Budget hawks immediately zero in anytime
we detect a wasteful spending proposal and this has
for 2016 shown to be one of the more ridiculous.
Mr Aigner states that both positions will be unpaid
and filled on a “ voluntary “ basis ? He then goes
on to state that “ due to the level of expertise and
experience the positions will require it is anticipated there will be minimal outlay of funding required” . We know from experience how long this
voluntary position lasts.
Folks, this is how it starts, and given the particular
lies, misstatements and falsehoods over the county
fire/rescue situation perhaps it warrants a little
walk down memory lane.
You might recall just 18 months ago we kept hearing that the problem was daytime staffing MondayFriday at Squad 1, ( KWVFD), that if only the
taxpayers would pony up and pay for daytime
staffing all would be well. That lasted about 10
minutes and no sooner than the Fire Rescue Director resigned did the B.O.S come up with the grand
idea that we should have a FIRE MARSHALL,
pay him $21,000 more a year than we paid the
DIRECTOR ,with benefits ,about a 45% increase
over the last salary, all the while no clear purpose
was laid out as to why any of this made any sense
to begin with. The stated goals of getting a mutual
aid agreement between the squads, finding cost
efficiencies in purchasing, improving response
times, the very same goals the last guy had and just
where do we stand ? The history of government
solving any problem often embodies the philosophy of throwing more money at a problem, often
times only a perceived problem, or one that would
solve itself if government got out of the way.
The documents referenced above go on to state

“the assistant fire marshalls will perform annual

compliance with fire and other related codes/

“ Assistant fire marshalls will be responsible for
performing fire & hazard investigations on suspicious or accidental fires, environmental crimes,
hazardous materials incidents and fire related injuries/deaths to determine cause and origin of fire”
I have lived in King William now for 18 years,
have a pretty good lay of the land. We have had
during that time 1 suspicious fire that I am aware
of, a grocery store that burned down on 360. The
County perhaps has somewhere around 100 or so
businesses. The most glaring question given that
set of facts is “ what in the hell will this guy be
doing that he needs 2 assistants “ ? Does he think
he landed in Norfolk or Richmond ? This in my
opinion is the typical EMPIRE BUILDING we see
so often in local government and why spending
continues unabated. We have thrown a half million
down a rat hole in the last decade on this issue and
not much has changed.
Let us hope the B.O.S comes to their collective
senses and stops the bleeding ( the taxpayer bleeding)
includes 1. The assertion that the Sheriff's Deputies
cannot provide security at the Court House, a
building shared with the Sheriff's Department, is
not rationale. We have the best Sheriff’s Deputies
in Virginia; 2. the demonstrated poor budget judgement of the past Board of Supervisors that increased homeowner's taxes 14 cents per hundred
assessed value last year, while many homeowner's
property values went down, cannot be logically
defended; 3. a Board that implemented a County
Budget resulting in a surplus near $1,000,000
while our school buildings crumble, and lack classrooms, is irresponsible and a key reason that only
two of those Board members, who voted for that
Budget are still on the Board; and 4. Property owners who take full advantage of the Farm Tools, and
Forestry Tax exemptions given to them by past
King William County Board's in the 70's and later,
should be the last to tell the current homeowner's,
and businesses who carry the tax burden of our
County, of how exceptional the County Board
taxing decisions that benefit only the 'plantation
minded class' are. Our History demonstrates how
our founding fathers felt about the Stamp Act taxation, and the like that supported a well to do landed
class. Where do you stand?
Respectfully

In Memoriam
Robert D. Heller
October 19, 1949-October 14, 2014
When the alarm went off, you’d answer the
call,
To help each victim, you went to them all.
You fought the flames and protected others,
Surrounded by your band of brothers.
It’s been two years now since you’ve been
gone,
But, how could we carry your legacy on?
We began with stories that started to unfold,
And each year they grow so that more are
being told.
Each grandchild will know the story, before
their parent is gone,
To make sure your legacy truly lives on.
I still hear your voice in those of your sons,
As they speak of you to their next generation.
With each life lived through your sons, it is
shown clearly,
That each son was proud of you Dad, and
loved you dearly.
So today, while we still mourn that you’re
gone,
Your life and legacy still live on.

Matt Rowe, Candidate for Congress
Joins KW Democrats at Local Events
Matt Rowe, Candidate for Congress, with members of the King William, King and
Queen, and Essex Democrats at Walkerton Day.
Matt Rowe, candidate for the First
Congressional District, has been meeting voters
in King William recently. He joined the King
William Democrats at King William County
Fest, Walkerton Day, and Crab Carnival.
He shared his vision for the House of
Representatives in DC with voters he enjoyed
talking with.“I’m running for Congress because
we need a representative that will work
tirelessly to improve the day-to-day lives of all
Virginians. We need a representative that
doesn’t just believe in big government or small
government, but smart, efficient government.
We need more representatives in Washington
that speak to our hopes and aspirations and
don’t simply cater to our fears. If elected, I can
be that representative for the First District.”
Mr. Rowe’s platform focuses on running an
efficient government free of shutdowns,
arbitrary sequestration, and fights about the
fiscal cliff. In addition, he has pledged to work
towards fixing our outdated infrastructure,
recommitting to Veteran’s Affairs, enacting
campaign finance reform, and securing paid
family and maternity leave for working
Americans.

Walking Tall, continued from front page
It was said that Broaddus would light up
when the kids were in awe as he fired up this
monstrous thing. The big maroon 2014 Chevy
Silverado featured a 540 CI Chevy engine, a
custom Concussion chassis, a 2-speed
Powerglide transmission and 66x43x25
Goodyear tires. Not just the kids, but adults
alike, marveled when it took to the air.
As Broaddus honed his driving and
showmanship skills, he advanced in the
monster truck world to compete up and down
the east coast from Wildwood, NJ to
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Last year,
Broaddus himself drove the truck to win the
2015 Monsters on the Beach in Virginia Beach.
Broaddus was admired over the region for his
tireless work ethic, for the way he began
driving tractors at age 8 on his father’s farm,
for the way he grew his farming operation to
be one of the largest in the state covering over
7000 acres, for the generous father and friend
he was, and for Walking Tall which became a
part of his local legend. In many ways, the 6 ft.
3 in. Broaddus was larger than life. When he
died in December, 2015, more than 1500
people attended his funeral at the Meadow
Event Park in Caroline County. No church was
large enough to accommodate such a crowd.
Around the time of his death, a former Aylett
Country Day School patron idly googled
“Walking Tall model”. To her surprise, she
found exactly that, a one-of-a-kind authentic
replica of the monstrous Walking Tall. She
acquired the model and contacted the producer.
He agreed to make a few more models. She
bought those and gave two to Broaddus’ two
daughters, two to Broaddus’ two grandsons,
and she gave the final one to Aylett Country
Day School to benefit the girls’ elementary and
middle school. She posted a picture of the
model on Maxie Broaddus’ Facebook page
with the comment, “I told him this would be
the next big thing”. It’s all about the kids.
Aylett Country Day School is offering one
lucky winner a chance to own the Walking Tall
model. The raffle for this replica will be held
from now until Sunday, November 13th. The
Monster Jam 1:64 die-cast model is on display
in the ACDS lobby. The winner of the raffle
will be drawn at the Touch-A-Truck
community event on November 13th at 3:00 at
Aylett Country Day School. Admission to this
event is $5 for general admission and children
age 2 and younger are free. Raffle tickets can
be purchased for $5 each or 5 for $20 at ACDS
or at the Touch-A-Truck event. For questions
about the raffle or Touch-A-Truck event,
please call (804) 443-3214.
Friends who knew Maxie Broaddus well said
they often overheard him say, “I gotta go and
do some more.” Looks as if he just did.

TAKING BACK UNWANTED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
KING WILLIAM SHERIFF’S OFFICE TAKING BACK UNWANTED PRESCRIPTION
DRUGS OCTOBER 22 AT THE CENTRAL
CROSSING SHOPPING CENTER LOCATED AT 4915 RICHMONDTAPPAHANNOCK HIGHWAY.
King William, Virginia – On October 22 from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the King William Sheriff’s
Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public an opportunity
to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their
homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring
your pills for disposal to the Central Crossing
Shopping Center at 4915 RichmondTappahannock Highway in front of Food Lion.
(The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or
sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is
free and anonymous, no questions asked.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety
and public health issue.
Medicines that languish in
home cabinets are highly
susceptible to diversion,
misuse, and abuse. Rates of
prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental
poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and
friends, including from the home medicine
cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of
unused medicines—flushing them down the
toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose
potential safety and health hazards.
For more information about the disposal of
prescription drugs or about the October 22
Take Back Day event, go to the DEA Diversion website.
