International Conference
on Sports Rehabilitation and Traumatology
Welcome and Introduction
Football is the most popular sport in the world. Currently there are about 265
million players and their health is the responsibility of the football medicine
community.
The FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) Medical Committee
has invited our group, as a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, to implement
the concept of “Football for Health” and to promote research & scientific
meetings in our country.
For this reason it is an honour to accept this invitation, focusing the special
20th edition of the International Conference on Sports Rehabilitation and
Traumatology exclusively on football. We invite you all to make your own
contribution.
Managing the health of the athlete has a very broad meaning which involves
the whole Football community. It is not just a problem of managing the medical
and scientific aspects, but, of involving all stakeholders, from players to
coaches, from journalists to executives.

There is now scientific evidence that has profoundly changed knowledge on
the positive effects of football on health, injury prevention and treatment.
Extensive studies have shown that the average incidence of injuries per game
is 2.7 and that the opportunity to prevent them, through the “FIFA 11+”programme,
is over 30%. In turn, the ability to make accurate diagnosis, effective treatment
and accelerated rehabilitation is improved.
This is important progress, which requires an international discussion to be
implemented successfully.

The central figure
of the Conference - The Player
When you think about football, you normally focus on the ball, the green field, the team
and the game. In reality, though, the true protagonist is the player, a human being who
dedicates his life to this sport. A human being, who dreams his career in his youth,
faces injuries when he is mature, and experiences the possible arthritic consequences
in his later years. The programme of the Conference has been planned considering the
most common health issues that the football player meets during his life and it is
divided into three main topic areas:
