2016 Product Catalogue 149YEARS a long tradition of quality and precision Established in 1867 in Couvet, Switzerland – an area that would soon become world-renowned for precision machining, watch manufacturing, and microelectronics – Edouard Dubied & Co initially produced high-quality knitting machinery. In 1878 the company added lathes and milling machinery, which it sold worldwide until 1987. Dubied began manufacturing high-quality automotive and bicycle components as early as 1902 under the name edco, an acronym for Edouard Dubied & Co; the company started producing hubs and bottom brackets in 1930. edco has long been known for its innovation, including a patent in 1975 for a sealed bottom bracket assembly – considered standard equipment today. By 1988 the company was focusing on bicycle components, though it continued to provide worldwide service for Dubied machinery and contract manufacturing for other industries. In 1993 the company released IGP, an integrated system with shift levers on the brake lever matched with hydraulic brake calipers. And 2000 saw the release of the SuperG hub, a design that has since been copied many times over. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s edco designed, engineered, and manufactured bicycle components for a number of other brands. In 2007, Dutch inventor and engineer Rob van Hoek acquired the company, renamed it Edco Engineering BV, and relocated the design, engineering, testing and assembly operations to ’s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. As hub components continued to be produced in Couvet, the focus changed to the expanding carbon wheel market. Innovations continued with the introduction of the Multisys freehub body, whose patented design allows for Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo cassettes to be fitted without modifications. In 2015 the company added its own carbon and composite manufacturing facility in China, where edco weaves raw carbon fabric to exacting specifications, formulates and impregnates resins using state-of-the-art chemical technology, and molds and finishes the final product. Today, edco’s advantage lies in its ability to design, engineer, and manufacture its products through complete control of the entire process. g. ineerin g n e d Inspire anics. h c e m tive Innova . anship m s t f a r lous c Meticu H and bu ilt whee ls for -road, a road, off nd track racing. 1 TECHNOLOGY always looking forward Our Integrated Low Temperature (ILT) braking system is used on all edco carbon and composite rims. Layered 3K carbon; hightemperature, wear-resistant resin; a proprietary surface finish; and specially developed brake pads provide a high coefficient of friction while maintaining stable temperatures across a variety of conditions. Developed as part of the ILT braking system, our 3K carbon rim bed and brake track provides a stable platform for the ultimate carbon rim – a strong foundation that performs well under the temperature extremes rim braking creates. 9K-8mm twill weave is one of edco’s proprietary rim construction materials: 9,000 strands of carbon fiber per tow, or bundle, hand-woven into a unique 8mm twill pattern. Extremely strong and stiff, the material helps prevent any sidewall damage from TOTALCONTROL from start to finish propagating through the rim structure – at a fiber areal weight of only 150 grams. All edco road wheels and hubs feature our patented Multisys freehub body, a design that allows the installation of Campagnolo or Shimano/SRAM cassettes without changes or modifications. The installation keyways on Shimano/SRAM cassettes often bite into the softer aluminum material on the freehub body, making them difficult to install and remove. edco’s patent-pending Antibite system incorporates three hardened steel inserts on the Multisys freehub body, preventing damage to the aluminum. In order to more precisely drill spoke holes in deep carbon rims, edco, in cooperation with Total Support Group (TSG), developed a 7-axis CNC rim drilling machine that drills from the center out. This method ensures that spoke holes will always be at the perfect location and the correct angle, eliminating unnecessary tension that can lead to spontaneous spoke breakage. Rather than use standard industrial bearings in its hubs, edco has developed its own bearing specification to provide years of trouble-free, high-performance use. Lubrication, ball and raceway tolerances, seal design: everything is considered and tested – both in the lab and in the real world – before they’re assembled by hand at our factory in The Netherlands. From initial concept to final packing, edco maintains total control throughout the entire production process. Design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and assembly are all done in-house to ensure the highest possible quality for our customers. Innovative products, world-class design. An innovator in the bicycle component market since its earliest days, edco was one of the first manufacturers of the Presta-style valve and 3-speed internal gear hub. In the late 1980s and early 90s, several key innovations were introduced: the sealed bearing bottom bracket, brake/shift lever integration, hydraulic braking. And we continue to innovate. Our design process starts with the latest CAD, FEM, and CFD software technology and continues with 3D printed models, prototypes, and extensive lab testing. Swiss-made. Hub parts are made in Switzerland’s Jura province, where the country’s famous watch industry originated. State-of-the-art equipment and the famous Swiss attention to detail ensure that every edco hub comes off the line with bearing alignment tolerance within 0.001mm. Extensive quality control. All edco hubs undergo a complete dimensional check before final hand-assembly. Each rim is subjected to a torsional and compressive load test prior to roundness and flatness quality controls. The completed wheels go through a 14-step quality control check before they’re boxed and shipped to the customer. Handbuilt by professionals. Our hubs and wheels are hand-assembled by master wheel builders at our head office in ’s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. Each wheelset requires approximately one and a half hours to achieve perfectly even spoke tension and a 0.2mm lateral tolerance. Top quality in every wheel. From our entry-level OPTIMA series to our innovative SUPERSPORT range, all edco wheels have gone through the same design, testing, manufacturing, and assembly process. We never compromise on quality. Every edco hub benefits from our 5-point sealing system: (1) bearing lubrication type and fill percentage, (2) a frictionless inner seal, (3) a low-friction outer seal, (4) hydrophobic nanocoating, and (5) a nitrile rubber seal to close the system. 2 3 SUPERSPORTSERIES acceleration + climbing A showcase of design, engineering, and manufacturing, edco sacrifice nothing to achieve SUPERSPORT’s ultra- AEROSPORTSERIES speed + stability low weight and competition-readiness. Rims are constructed from our 9K-8mm twill weave carbon for stiffness; a 3K carbon rim bed and ILT brake track offers superior stopping power in all conditions. Using 2.9-gram Sapim CX carbon spokes and our Swiss-made Victory hubs, these wheels are handbuilt in The Netherlands. AEROSPORT’s deep V profile, based on aircraft design principles, aims to calm the turbulence generated at the leading edge of the wheel. Proven both in the wind tunnel and on the road, these wheels give little steering torque at high angles of attack, providing unparalleled crosswind stability. edco engineered AEROSPORT with a combination of aerospace foam and our proprietary 9K-8mm twill weave carbon, making them perfect for time trials, triathlons, and model tyre depth internal width external width weight (set) decal options 46mm − 25.5mm 1138g WB, BB Julier clincher tubeless ready 28mm 17mm 25.5mm 1019g WB, BB Neggia Light tubular 25mm − 22.0mm 950g WB, BB Umbrial Lighttubular road / criterium racing. Precision-machined in Switzerland and hand-assembled in The Netherlands, every road hub employs our patented Multisys freehub body for compatibility with Shimano/SRAM and Campagnolo cassettes. edco-designed bearings mean years of ultra-smooth riding; a 5-point sealing system ensures minimum resistance and maximum protection. BEARINGS raising the standard Most premium hubs on the market today use ordinary industrial bearings, also known as cartridge bearings. While they offer a balance between performance, life, and cost, they’re designed for a broad range of uses and applications. Bicycle hubs are different, though. Operating at relatively low speeds, they not only require a tight seal against water and dirt, but also must withstand both radial and axial loads. edco has developed its own bearing specification with SKF to provide each hub with years of trouble-free, high-performance use. Lubrication, ball and raceway tolerances, seal design: everything is considered and tested – both in the lab and in the real world – before we put them in any edco hub. model hub used in spoke type freehub body standard axle axle options option parts SuperGfront OPTIMA J-Bend (radial) − 100mm QR − − SuperGrear OPTIMA J-Bend (2:1) Multisys w/Antibite 130mm QR − − PROSPORT DB 6-bolt adapter & SuperG FD front J-Bend (2 cross) − 100mm QR 12x100 TA OPTIMA DB axle kits PROSPORT DB SuperG FD rear J-Bend (2 cross) Multisys w/Antibite OPTIMA DB 130mm or 12x135 TA or 6-bolt adapter & 135mm QR 12x142 TA axle kits AEROSPORT Apterafront PROSPORT Straight Pull (radial) − 100mm QR – – AEROSPORT Apterarear PROSPORT Straight Pull (2:1) Multisys w/Antibite 130mm QR – – 100mm QR Apaxviafront MOUNTAINSPORT Straight Pull (4 cross) − 12x100 TA or 15x100 TA 12x135 TA or Apaxviarear MOUNTAINSPORT Straight Pull (4 cross) Shimano/SRAM w/Antibite 135mm QR 12x142 TA or 12x148 TA SuperS Track front TRACKSPORT Roches SuperS Track rear TRACKSPORT Roches SuperT Track front TRACKSPORT SuperT Track rear TRACKSPORT 6-bolt adapter & XD Driver J-Bend (radial) − 100mm bolt-on − − J-Bend (2 cross) Threaded Track Flip/Flop 120mm bolt-on − − J-Bend (radial) − 100mm bolt-on − − J-Bend (2 cross) Threaded Track 120mm bolt-on − − − − Victoryfront SUPERSPORT Sapim CX-Carbon − 100mm QR Victoryrear SUPERSPORT Sapim CX-Carbon Multisys w/Antibite 130mm QR 12 6-bolt adapter e d c o -s p ons k Stöp ored Nic ler at th e 2015 ationa Dutch N l C ha m p ionships . − 13 CASSETTEMONOBLOCK durable. lightweight. beautiful. edco’s Monoblock is, in a word, a piece of art: a single-piece cassette exquisitely machined from a solid block of cold-forged chromoly steel – then heat-treated, tumble-finished, and electroplated for added durability and low-friction operation. Shifting ramps and profiled teeth provide smooth and consistent shifts; its honeycomb design allows for maximum material removal while maintaining strength. Have a set of 10-speed wheels that you’d like to use with a new 11-speed group set? Monoblock’s design allows for engagement on a 10-speed freehub body. Just purchase and install edco’s 11-speed Monoblock cassette and our optional Ten+Eleven lock ring.
