Book Description
A chronicle of the struggles, bravado, and irrepressible sexuality of young
men.
Will McBride, an American who has spent his adult life in Germany, has
made one of the great extended photographic portraits of male adolescence,
created over the course of his forty-year career as a photographer. In his
studio work and in his reportage for such magazines as Twen, McBride has
focused on young men as they come to terms with their inner and outer
development.

Nice boy photos!
Wonderful, large, emotional photos of boys, some nudes.
It's great to finally see a collection of McBride's photos sold in the US,
especially given that many of them were take up to thirty years ago.

Reflections From the Edge
Disclosure: I know this photographer and have a number of his works
displayed in my home and certainly cannot claim to be unbiased. That said:
This is not a book full of "pretty" pictures of boy toys. These images don't
glamourize the coupling of gay men. They do haunt, shock and cause the
viewer to wonder about the lives of "others" who may not have the same
comfort or ethos as we, but whose humanity can still reach us despite our
lack of contact with them in our protected lives. Badertscher brings a
discerning eye to the subject, having what is clearly a familiarity with his
"models'" lives and desires. He gives us a glimpse of those at the edge (or
are they?) This book is a jewel at a "bargain" price.

Magnificent artist, magnificent book
What an incredible book! I really was left speechless the first time I was it
(and that doesn't happen too often!). McBride's photography is often
labelled as "exploitive" or "deviant" by small-minded western detractors,
but this collection of his works (photography, drawings, and sculpture)
clearly shows that he is a person in love with the human form, not in lust
with it. There will always be those who define anything outside their tastes
as "immoral," so this book is not for such folks. For those who can

differentiate between art and "obscenity," and who are willing to be a little
shocked by what they view (yes, even I was a little shocked by some of the
"Zeig Mal!/Show Me!" images, and I consider myself a pretty progressive
person), this is a wonderful overview of McBride's work.
My only gripe, as another reviewer noted, is that it left me with an intense
desire to have larger or better-quality prints of some of the images. I think a
CD-ROM [set] containing high-resolution reproductions of the images in
the book would be an outstanding addition to any future releases.

Great book
This book gave me a great look into Will Mcbride's life and photos. The one
thing I missed was some info under the photos about what and where they
where taken. Hope it's continued soon.

Sad text, contrast the luminous photos of his sons & others.
Will Mcbride is as different as a man -saying he was a "bad father"- as one
can contrast with his magnetic images.Never spending much time with his
sons or his wife, yet creating nude portraits of them and others that transfix
your imagination. Images one would swear were taken by a man doting on
his subjects. Divorced later he saw little of his family thereafter. Maybe the
camera was the only instrument Will McBride knew to communicate his
feeling.How fortunate we are he use it. Beautiful, yet controversial to
some,this book establishes again why we should all thank our founding
fathers for our 1st amendment.

Brilliant, a long overdue book
Finally, at last, Will McBride gets to tell his story in both languages
(English and German) This book covers everything, including the series
Twen, which launched his photographic career. Buy this book and you will
soon be buying the rest of his classic works (if you can find them)

One of the best overviews of any artist's life and work
The oft-controversial, but more oft-brilliant Will McBride often gets lumped
into the same category as Jock Sturges or Sally Mann. There's some casual
linkage there, but McBride has his own distinct territory, and it's examined
exuberantly in this gigantic compendium of just about everything he did
that's worth looking at. It's far superior to the impossibly skimpy Taschen
book "My '60s", and even goes so far as to include the complete set of pages
for "Zeig Mal!" (Show Me!), although they are reproduced rather small,
probably to avoid too much trouble with small-minded authorities. Anyone
even remotely interested in photography or McBride's work in general
should not miss this.

Emotional, beautiful, high-quality photographic book.
A photographic, autobiographical work covering McBride's life up to the
1970s ("To be continued"). Excellent, high quality photographs of
McBride's work, including some controversial items. Text in German and
English, with emotionally sad overtone. This is a large, physically heavy,
high quality book - but many photographs are printed as a spread across
facing pages, causing the inevitable problem that the photos are marred by
being broken across the binding in the middle.
McBride's work is hard to come by, most of it having been published in
magazines, and in books now out of print. This book provides an overview
of the incredibly vast quantity of photographs taken by McBride over his
life, and it creates a longing to own a much more comprehensive set of his
photos, as photographic prints (or on CDROM?) without the binding
breaking up the photos.

mesmerizing
Amos Bandertscher's new book, Baltimore Portraits, is a visual
documentary of a city's forgotten faces. The photographer uses images as a
visual diary of his impressions of the streets, bars, and back alleys of 'Charm
City', where the beautiful, the marginalized, outsiders, freaks and clowns
converge into a colorful and yet often melancholy documentation of lives
lived on the edge and lives lost. The book is an impressive body of work
which ranks among the likes of Nan Goldin and Diane Arbus. --This text

outside the Shrine Auditorium on her way into the Academy Awards

I am in the book
The book was brillant. It showed every aspect of living in LA. The articles
and reviews that surrounded the book after it's publisihng were off base.

A comment from one of those kids
Well if you open this book you'll see my friends and classmates . . .
Although I wonder why the pictures in this book are considerably older than
the copyright date, this book does and excellent job of profiling the kids of
LA in the early nineties not 1997. California experienced quite an economic
uproar since since those Bar Mitzah days! Also, I wonder why this book is
entitled "Growing Up in the Shadow of Hollywood." As one of those
"shadowed" youths ( I attended the Harvard-Westlake School whose prom
clad students appear in the beginning of the book), I can assure you that
Hollywood is neither the mainstay of the Beverly Hills culture nor is it the
mainstay of the South Central culture, both which are depicted in this book.

Beverly Hills 90201 meets Village of the Damned
The only thing scarier than some of the pictures in this chronicle of teenage
LA, is knowing that it's only the tip of the iceberg. From the rich brats to the
gangsters and their wannabe imitations, Greenfield does a great job of

Larsen's photo-essay shows the messages that, like city youngsters
everywhere, Japan's urban youths go around wearing these days. In
accordance with Japan's longtime fascination with the West, these
pronouncements are in roman letters and consist mostly of English words.
But they're sometimes misspelled, and seldom make straightforward sense
as English. They're wonderful things like the ironic-to-wear "Japanese
Motorcycle Repair Kit," the cryptic "Hip Q-Be Kazumi, Y," the militant
"Racism Sucks" backed with (i.e., on the shirt's flip side) "Fight the Youth
with Poisoned Minds," and the elliptical "Don't Be Mine It's Time to
Spreading Our Wings and Fly. Don't Let Another Day E66-8046-2840."
And then there's the poetic "You Made up Such an Interesting Excuse about
Why You Were Late," appropriately (maybe) worn by a
disappointed-looking girl. Oh, some purvey recognizable U.S. sentiments
(mostly commercial), but largely they're kinda wacky, giving a new
meaning to the word so often laid upon both the Japanese and the youth
culture: inscrutable. Ray Olson

An over-priced bare-bones coffee table book
The pictures in this book were taken during a trip the photographer made to
Japan. The content is as advertised, as far as being pictures of crazy
Japanese t-shirts with cryptic English slogans. However, the feeling I'm left
with is that Larsen had a few hours on her hands one day, so she
photographed a few t-shirted Japanese, then threw the photographs together
in hope of regaining some of the expenses of the trip. The slogans on the
t-shirts presented here are far from the best I've seen, either in content, irony
or humor. The photographs are of indifferent to poor quality and are similar
to the "artsy" soot-and-whitewash school in vogue among beginning
photographers. Perhaps Larsen felt that the photographs spoke for
themselves, or perhaps she was Making A Statement, but I suspect instead
that she simply couldn't be bothered preparing any commentary for the book
to give a perspective to the English t-shirt phenomenon in Japan. That's a
shame, since it can a very interesting and/or amusing subject for Westerners,
and can provide insight into one aspect of Japanese culture. The lack of any
commentary at all, the small number of photographs, and their indifferent
quality give me a feeling of being suckered. Japlish was a great
disappointment to me.
