Exhibits and Inquiries Enhance Twain`s Elmira
June 2014
Exhibits and Inquiries Enhance Twain’s Elmira
Especially in recent months, Dr. Barb Snedecor has seen a surprisingly robust and welcome
growth in her Mark Twain markets. Dr. Snedecor is Director of the Center for Mark Twain
Studies at Elmira College, and she shared her story with the Chamber’s Board of Directors
in May.
The session was originally prompted by the opening of two new Twain exhibits this spring,
but those compelling projects have been accompanied by more interest and inquiries than
the community has seen since the 2010 centennial anniversary of the author’s passing.
Few writers enjoy the sustained prominence and reading audience which Twain still
engenders worldwide. Inquiries arrive regularly from young readers and veteran scholars
alike in dozens of countries around the globe. Beyond the increase in such international
Mark Twain
contacts this year, Dr. Snedecor’s Center, the Chamber and other Twain resources like the
Chemung Valley History Museum, have connected with many local and regional students and teachers, tourists and a rush
of travel and general news journalists. (Please see related story on page 3. Ed.)
Dr. Snedecor’s presentation celebrated the opening of the relocated Mark Twain Exhibit, which is now housed in historic
Cowles Hall, just steps away from the campus site of the famed Mark Twain Study. Placing Dr. Snedecor’s office and the
Twain Exhibit next to the octagonal Study will provide a more seamless and convenient opportunity to tell the story of
Samuel Clemens and his legacy in Elmira. As Dr. Snedecor explained, “Visitors will be encouraged to begin their visit at the
Study and then follow directional signs to Cowles Hall for a guided tour of the Exhibit.”
The Exhibit itself gives a unique glimpse into the author’s private life and consists of antiques from the Langdon Mansion
and Quarry Farm, family images portrayed in photographs and other media, and a bookstore. Staff from the Center for Mark
Twain Studies will be on hand to guide visitors and answer questions.
Mark Twain’s Elmira is the new exhibit at the Chemung Valley History Museum. It tells the story of Elmira during the time
the author visited Quarry Farm and includes a look at the local people and places that became key parts of his life and, in
some cases, parts of his books.
Museum Director Bruce Whitmarsh noted Quarry Farm itself was a somewhat remote hillside sanctuary for rest and retreat,
while the author’s study there was a place to smoke his cigars and get some writing done. Meanwhile, Kapproth’s Tavern in
downtown Elmira was a place to drink, socialize and shoot billiards.
“We wanted to bring all these parts together,” explained Mr. Whitmarsh, “to show how Elmira left a lasting mark on Clemens,
both as a person and an author.” Twain wrote most of his masterpieces while summering in Elmira for twenty years.
Both exhibits will be major components of the engaging Mark Twain experience for visitors this year. Other highlights include
The Trouble Begins at Eight spring lecture series at Quarry Farm, visits to the burial site and monument at Woodlawn
Cemetery and the Trolley Into Mark Twain Country narrated tours.

“We’ve made major capital investments that will
help…position us well for future growth.”
Finding a financial institution can be a frustrating experience for new business owners. Fortunately,
when we started BilDan we decided to go to Corning Credit Union, where I (Bill Allard) had been a
personal member for years. It seemed like a great fit and it has worked out well for our growing business.
BilDan came a long way in a short time. We were challenged by having many customers but not
enough tools to meet the increasing demand. That’s a good problem to have, as long as you can
meet the challenge.
With Corning Credit Union’s help, we’ve made major capital investments that will help us not only keep
pace with current customer demand but will position us well for future growth.

Attractions featured on this year’s tour included: Chemung Valley History Museum, Mark Twain Study & Exhibit,

International Journalists Visit
Three writers were buzzing with enthusiasm last month after wrapping up media visits
which were hosted in part in Chemung County! Tours were provided for a freelance writer
from Australia who contributes to a number of top-tier publications that include the
Sydney Morning Herald & Sun Herald newspapers, a literary agent representing New
York Daily News, and a writer/photographer team from Montreal on assignment for
Canoe.ca, a major Canadian online news site. The tours were coordinated by Finger Lakes
Wine Country and tourism offices in Chemung, Steuben & Schuyler counties and offered
to generate media coverage for the region.

Twain Burial Site Restoration a Welcome Eagle Scout Project
Mark Twain once said, “Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the
rest.” Fittingly, Twain’s burial site, the Langdon family lot at Woodlawn Cemetery in
Elmira, has received a thorough restoration project thanks entirely to the efforts of a
future Eagle Scout, his local volunteer group and the Five Rivers Council, Boy Scouts
of America.
Carrying out his Eagle Service Project, required to earn his Eagle Scout Award, John
Addiego of Big Flats Troop 87 worked with the management at Woodlawn Cemetery.
He then organized a group of volunteers to help him tackle the labor-intensive tasks
John Addiego of Big Flats Troop 87 .
involved in restoring the historic landmark and popular tourist destination. Volunteers
gathered over several weekends replacing curbs, resetting walkways and monument stones, and cleaning surrounding headstones.
“John’s project has made a visit to Mark Twain’s gravesite safer and more beautiful,” said Bryce E. Cuyle, Superintendent of the
Woodlawn Cemetery. “This reflects well on our cemetery and our city, and I greatly appreciate the efforts of this young man,”
Cuyle added.
The project started by replacing the stone curb along the road where stones had shifted through time. Every stone was dug out so
that the land could be prepped for a cleaner, smoother look. Roots were cut away, trenches were dug deeper, and gravel was laid
to support the stones. The curbstones, which are 18” long by 13” deep and 3” thick, were replaced and leveled. Stones that lay in
front of walkways were also cemented down for additional safety. The next phase of the project involved resetting the stones and
the monuments. With the existing cement bed in good shape, it was thoroughly cleaned and stones were leveled and adhered
into place. Volunteers then took the time to clean the monuments and the surrounding gravestones. Debris was cleaned up and
the lawn was raked.
The project was completed with approval and appreciation
from Mrs. Irene Langdon, one of the remaining members of
the Langdon Family. Life Scout John Addiego will be presented
his Eagle Scout Award later this year.

NYSARC Trust Services Recreation Grant Awarded to Chemung ARC
Chemung ARC announces that it has received a grant in the amount of $10,000 from NYSARC Trust Services Board.
These funds will be used to support the agency’s recreation program.
Chemung ARC’s recreation program creates recreation, socialization and leisure opportunities for people with intellectual
and developmental disabilities. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in the community are very
often socially isolated and lack the social skills to pursue a life with meaningful relationships. Chemung ARC’s recreation
program provides people supported with the opportunity to experience social interaction in an environment with
professional oversight where these skills can be taught. People who lack these opportunities often find themselves
increasingly socially isolated and secluded as their social skills deteriorate. Activities include bowling, swimming, dances,
Special Olympics and occasional day trips.
“We rely heavily on fundraising to support opportunities for recreation and socialization,” said Craig S. Mennig, Family
Support Director. “As raising money becomes more difficult, it is nice to know that our friends at NYSARC Trust Services
recognize the importance of these opportunities and show their support financially. Receiving this amount of money is
extraordinary,” added Mennig.
Remainder fund grants totaling $1,660,500 were awarded to support NYSARC guardianship programs statewide. A total
of $2,207,880 in grants were awarded in 2014 to support recreation and guardianship statewide. NYSARC Trust Services
administers supplemental needs trusts that enable people with disabilities to remain in their home and community while
retaining Medicaid services and other government benefits. Information is available on how NYSARC Trust Services may
