FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends:
After helping to celebrate Holy Name High
School’s 100th anniversary and with the school
in a great position to succeed for the next
100 years, I’ve decided to step down from my
position as president effective June 30, 2015.
Words cannot express how much I’ve enjoyed
the more than 25 years I’ve spent at Holy
Name as a teacher, football and track coach,
assistant principal, principal, and president. It
has been an honor to be a part of the Holy Name
family and to watch thousands of students
grow and develop into outstanding
individuals who we are proud to
call Namers. I thank all of you
who have supported Holy
Name and me throughout
the years, and know your
commitment to the school
will allow it to thrive.
Our centennial celebrations
were just a few examples of how
supportive alumni, parents, and
friends are of Holy Name, and I must
say that 2014 was a remarkable year for us. As
we recognized our 100th anniversary, we were
able to connect with many of you who came
back to celebrate. It was great to see so many
people come together, get involved, and really
make Holy Name shine.
In May, the Class of 2014 had a wonderful
Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement. The
Rev. William Krizner, who for many years was the
Chaplain at Holy Name, was the Mass Celebrant.
John Banaszak ’68 was the Commencement
Speaker. Banaszak is a three-time NFL Super
Bowl Champion who played for the Pittsburgh
Steelers. He spoke about leading strong and
productive lives – a great message for our

graduates. Certainly, the Class of 2014 was
blessed to have such wonderful events.
June brought about our All-School Reunion
and NamerFEST. Many classes had reunions as
part of the fun weekend of events. That same
weekend we held a ceremony to dedicate our
Ohio Historical Marker. Those who took part in
that weekend will not forget NamerFEST 2014!
In September, we celebrated the official
‘birthday’ of Holy Name with a Mass and
cupcake celebration. October quickly arrived
after that, giving us the opportunity to celebrate
Homecoming Weekend. Our 1975 Football,
1981 Baseball, and 2006 Girls’ Soccer State
Championship Teams were all inducted into our
Hall of Fame that weekend. It was fantastic to see
this group of athletes and coaches come together.
At our Homecoming Football Game the next
evening we had not only the state champions
as guests at a pre-game cookout, but all former
players, cheerleaders, and band members.
Everyone who attended then formed a tunnel
for our team to take the field and defeat Central
Catholic, making it an even better night.
November included a Mass to commemorate
Veterans Day. Dr. Brian Adams ’86 gave
a presentation and reflection after Mass that
captured the entire audience. The alumni
veterans in attendance, as well as our entire
school community, were extremely appreciative.
Finally, our year-long celebration ended with a
Centennial Mass in December, with hundreds
in attendance gathering in the Memorial Gym
to honor Holy Name’s past and to prepare for an
even brighter future.
I invite you to visit our campus. We have
new windows along the front of our building,
in large part due to generous donations from
Tony Ferrante ’49 and the Michael Talty and
Helen Talty Charitable Trust. The windows look
wonderful, update the school, and are extremely
ecologically efficient. We hope to complete the
entire project this summer.
Thank you for your support of Holy Name,
and enjoy this issue of The Wave!

A
Foundation
to Serve
FOR ANITA HNANICEK COOK ’74 AND KELLY CONNOR PETTY ’82,
DRIVE TO HELP OTHERS BEGAN WITH EXPERIENCES AT HOLY NAME
or more than 100 years, Holy
Name High School has created
a suppor tive educ ationa l
environment that nurtures not
only academic excellence in its
students, but also helps them grow spiritually,
socially, and morally.
It was at the school that the foundation
of helping those most in need was put in
place for Anita Hnanicek Cook ’74 and
Kelly Connor Petty ’82 – and the residents
of Greater Cleveland are better off because
of them.
Cook, executive director of the West Side
Catholic Center, and Petty, superintendent
and CEO of the Cuyahoga County Board of
Developmental Disabilities, work tirelessly
every day to make sure that some of the most
vulnerable residents in the community have
a chance at a better life.
Taking care of the least
of your brothers
A warm bed. A hot meal. A clean shirt.
The opportunity to turn their lives around.
Those are just some of the basic needs
of the more than 6,000 men, women, and
children who walk through the doors each
year of the West Side Catholic Center on
Lorain Avenue. In 2013, more than 67,000

meals were served and more than 6,000
pieces of clothing were distributed at the
agency’s drop-in center, while more than
11,000 nights of lodging and 27,000-plus
meals were served at the neighboring 34-bed
women and children’s center.
“Anything that people need to survive
we have here,” Cook said. “We are charged,
especially in the Catholic faith, to take care of
the least of our brothers, and the people who
come to our Center have nowhere else to go.
I think a city is judged on how well it takes
care of those who are less fortunate, and we
have more than 200 regular volunteers and
up to 5,000 other volunteers who are trying
to make the world a better place.”
I remember Mr. Maras in English class talking about pride of performance, meaning you
should be proud of what you do, and pride of self, meaning you should be proud of what

you put your name on. I’ve tried to do that throughout my life.

ALUMNAE PROFILE
Cook joined the Center as CFO in 2009
before taking over the role of executive director
in 2011, where she and her staff work daily to
make sure the Center is able to meet the needs
of its clients and change the community’s
perception of those in need.
“I deal with so many stereotypes, but our
clients have so many challenges to overcome.
I like to tell people that the success stories
take time and the definition of success may
be a bit different here,” she explained. “The
best thing you can do for one of our clients
is look them in the eyes and talk with them.
Many people avert their eyes when they see a
homeless person, so if you can validate them
and give them the gift of humanity, that is
as important as the plate of food you are
handing them. That is how our volunteers
are changed by being here at the West Side
Catholic Center.
“I tell everyone that this is the best job
I’ve ever had and hopefully it will be the last
job I ever have, as I want to be able to retire
from here and go off into a new career of
volunteering.”
The lessons she learned at Holy Name still
influence Cook in her daily work.
“I remember Mr. Maras in English class
talking about pride of performance, meaning
you should be proud of what you do, and
pride of self, meaning you should be proud
of what you put your name on. I’ve tried
to do that throughout my life,” Cook said.
“I had some wonderful teachers, as Sister
Frances Ann inspired me as a math student
and Sister Therese Marie really prepared us
for college in her AP History class. You really
had a strong buy-in from everyone involved
at the school and a strong dedication from
the teachers.
“I had a great experience at Holy Name
and the fact that, after 100 years, the school
is staying true to itself and forming young
men and women in Greater Cleveland is
really important.”
In addition to her work with the West Side
Catholic Center, Cook and her husband, Tom
’74, are also active consultants with Social
Venture Partners in Cleveland. The couple
resides in Tremont.
A place for everyone
The Cuya hoga Count y Board of
Kelly Connor Petty ’82
Developmental Disabilities provides a full
range of services to more than 10,000 residents
in Cuyahoga County, including in-home
early intervention programs for very young
children and their families, assistance to 31
school districts, leisure programs for seniors,
vocational training, and crisis intervention.
But the Board’s reach also extends into the
community as it works to help people with
developmental disabilities find a meaningful
place in the world. As part of the outreach
program, the Board has developed an urban
farm network in several local communities,
and has a network of franchised Just-A-Buck
stores that provide employment opportunities
for people with disabilities, with the Parma
store recently earning a Business of the Month
Award from the Mayor’s Office.
“The people we support can be vulnerable
and there needs to be a system in place that
protects them. Our network of providers is
there to support them from birth to death,”
Petty said. “At the same time, for people with
disabilities, their place in this world has been
advancing and they want a full, meaningful
life. I believe it is an important role for us to
help them achieve that and put opportunities
in place so they are experiencing real life. That
part of the job is taking on an increasingly
important role for us because people with
disabilities are speaking out that they want
a job, want to spend time with their friends,
and just do the types of things that everyone
else does.”
Petty has served in her current role as
superintendent and CEO since April 1, 2013,
after having been assistant superintendent
and COO since July 2011. Her involvement
with the Board dates back to 1991, when
she began working as a medicaid specialist
in the Community/Residential Services
Division. Later, she held various positions
in that division before being named general
manager in 2002 and then director in 2007. In
2008, she became the director of Community
and Medicaid Services.
While her career of helping others started
as a student at Xavier University, Petty’s
commitment to making a difference was
developed at Holy Name.
“I took a summer job near my parents’
home in North Royalton as a service provider,
and I almost instantly fell in love with the
work,” she said. “It was fun and rewarding,
and I felt I got just as much, if not more,
back from the people that I worked with.
Later on when I came to work for the County
Board, I enjoyed it because it was a job that I
could step into with a significant amount of
responsibility and have a rewarding career.
“I learned at Holy Name that if you are
going to do something you should do it
the right way, as well as the importance of
committing to a life that makes a difference
for other people.”
Petty still has ties to the school, as Holy
Name students have volunteered with the
organization over the years, most notably
with the Board’s bowling leagues. For nearly
six years Holy Name students have joined
developmentally disabled adults at Red Circle
Lanes in Parma every Thursday afternoon
from September to April to offer them support
and encouragement while they bowl. This
commitment to helping others led the Board
to honor the Holy Name student volunteers
with an Inclusion Award in 2011.
“We have been the recipient of some great
volunteer work from the students at Holy
Name over the years,” she said, “and we don’t
give the Inclusion Award to just anybody, so
it is something for the school to be proud of.”
Petty and her husband, Keith, currently
reside in Olmsted Township.

MULTI-PURPOSE FIELD AND TRACK PROJECT
Team Up
for
Turf
HOLY NAME LAUNCHES FUNDRAISING EFFORT TO BUILD
ON-CAMPUS MULTI-PURPOSE FIELD AND TRACK
ince its founding in
1914, Holy Name High
School has worked
to position itself as
the preeminent, co-educational
Catholic high school in the
Cleveland area by providing young
men and women with a nurturing
and supportive educational
environment in which to develop
the “Triple Threat” student: Mind,
Body, and Spirit.
To ensure that it can stay true
to that commitment, Holy Name
is updating and building on to the
school’s athletic facilities as one of
several planned improvements to
the campus. Under the current
proposal, the grass practice field
located behind the school will be
replaced with a multi-purpose turf
field lined for football, soccer, and
lacrosse, and a six-lane all-weather
track surrounding the field will
also be installed.
The planned updates will
allow for several athletic teams,
including soccer, lacrosse, track
and field, and junior varsity and
freshmen football, to hold home
games on campus for the first
time. It would truly bring the
home field advantage home.
“While we have great indoor
athletic facilities, we are lagging
behind in our outdoor ones,”
said Athletic Director Jack
Richardson ’79. “More than 65
percent of our students participate
6

TO PROVIDE A FIELD AND TRACK THAT ARE
BOTH SAFE AND MULTI-FUNCTIONAL.

in athletics and right now our
student-athletes have to travel to
St. Bridget for games. It would be
great to have those events right
outside the door of our campus.
Being able to increase attendance
of students at our games would
create a wonderful situation for
our student-athletes. It will be
the greatest feeling in the world
to have everyone engaged and
on-campus, showing that we are
striving for the future, and the
students will love it.
“It is important to note that
this isn’t just the dream of the
Athletic Office, this is a team
effort between the Advisory
Board, the president, and our
alumni – it is truly a Holy Name
effort to get this done. Everyone
HOLY NAME HIGH SCHOOL | holynamehs.com
in the school is behind this.
“Once we have the updated
facility, you will be able to pull into
the parking lot and see a beautiful
field, one that is a visual reminder
that Holy Name is moving forward
and viable. It will show that we are
committed to being here for the
next 100 years.”
While the benefits to the
athletic program at Holy Name
will be the most visible aspect of
the project, the updates are vital
to ensure the continued growth
of the school, according to Scott
Opincar ’87, vice chairman on
the school’s Advisory Board
and head of the subcommittee
working on the “Team Up for
Turf” fundraising effort.
“There are four primary reasons
why we need a multi-purpose
facility, the first being safety,”
Opincar said. “The significant
use our teams currently put
on the grass field doesn’t allow
time for the grass to regrow, and
by the end of the year the field
can become very hard. When
parents are making a financial
decision about where to send their
children, we need to make sure
Holy Name’s facilities are safe
and able to handle the demands
of the athletic programs.
“In addition to athletics, the
marching band would be able to
use the field to practice and we
could hold gym classes and other
events outside as well. It would
also make it easier for students
and parents to attend events, and
increasing attendance would boost
the overall experience of being an
athlete at Holy Name.
“The facility will also help
with admissions. Having a
multi-use field will allow us to
host CYO games and events on
campus, allowing us to market
the school and our facilities to a
wider audience, one that may not
otherwise come to Holy Name
and see what we have to offer as
a school.
“Finally, this is necessary if we
are to stay competitive with other
schools, both private and public,
who have already improved their
athletic facilities – they found a
PLANNED giving

and a six-lane all-weather track (above), as well as a gated entrance and other amenities (below).
way to get it done; now we have
to find a way.”
Varsity Head Football Coach
Dan Wondolowski agreed with
both Richardson and Opincar,
and said, “This is Holy Name’s
opportunity to have a true home
field advantage and to provide
a field and track that are both
safe and multi-functional. It’s
long overdue, and will take care
of challenges that have persisted
since I was an assistant coach more
than ten years ago. I know this
won’t just benefit football players;
it will benefit every student at
Holy Name.”
Pat Nicholson ’04 has seen the
need for a new facility from both
sides – first as a student-athlete
and now as the head of the school’s
track and field program.
“This is something we haven’t
had even going back to the old
campus,” Nicholson said. “When
I first took over as coach I talked
to Jack (Richardson) and he has
7
always been willing to work with
us on improvements. We initially
cleared a field by campus for
discus throws and shot put, and
I’m proud of the commitment
from the AD and the other
coaches to get something done
and make this school an even
better place.
“But now we need these new
facilities not only for sports, but
also to help get students into the
building and consider Holy Name
as an option. To Holy Name’s
credit, as much as we are moving
forward as a school, we are still
staying true to our high academic
standard and making sure that
our students earn everything they
get, both in the classroom and on
the athletic field. I appreciate that
as an alumnus.”
The school is asking for
support from all constituents to
raise the $1.5 million needed to
successfully complete this project.
As of March 11, 2015, $526,000
HOLY NAME HIGH SCHOOL | holynamehs.com
has been raised. The turf field
will be named Cicerchi Field
in recognition of the generous
support of Rich Cicerchi ’65.
Additional naming rights,
including those for the track,
pavilion, bleachers, and more,
are still available.
“This is something that I
hope everyone from alumni to
staff to teachers will support
as it will benefit the entire
school,” Opincar said. “We need
financial support to complete
this; however, it will require all
of our constituents to step up
and meet the challenge. While
we understand that everyone’s
financial situation is different,
we believe that everyone can find
a way financially to support this
important project.”

ADMINISTRATION
Holy Name High School
President Benjamin Farmer
to Step Down Effective June 30
W
hen Benjamin Farmer
began his career at Holy
Name High School in
1988, he had no idea he
would spend the next 27 years at the school as
an educator, coach, and administrator. Now,
after nearly three decades as a member of the
Holy Name community, Farmer will step
down from his current position as president
on June 30, 2015.
B efore joi n i ng t he Holy Na me
administration, Farmer was a math teacher.
He also coached football and track, serving
as the head girls’ track coach from 1992 to
1998. At the beginning of the 2002-2003
school year, Farmer was named the assistant
principal for academics. After one year as an
assistant principal, he was named the school’s
principal, when then-principal Raymond
Ramicone ’63 became the school’s president.
A year later, in 2004, Farmer was appointed
the second president of Holy Name while
also retaining his position as principal. He
continued to serve in this dual position until
the 2014-2015 school year, when the positions
were again split. Farmer remained as president,
while Shelbrey Althoff Blanc ’95 became the
school’s first female lay principal.
“From being a teacher to being the
president, I’ve enjoyed all of the roles and
responsibilities I’ve had while at Holy Name,”
said Farmer. “It has been a special place for
me and a great experience in my life because
of the kids. I’ve been able to see thousands of
students grow and develop into outstanding
people, and I will never forget my time
spent here.”
During his tenure as both principal and
president, Farmer was instrumental in helping
foster an environment where students and
faculty could learn and communicate with
21st century technology. The former second
floor library was renovated into the Ferrante
Library Media Center, with new computers,
Benjamin Farmer has spent 27 years at Holy Name High School.
He has served as a math teacher, coach, and administrator.
iPads, and laptops available for student use
throughout the day. Additionally, the entire
campus is now wireless, allowing both students
and faculty to have access to the Internet for
educational purposes while in the classroom.
Several building and grounds improvements
were also made with Farmer at the helm,
including the installation of new boilers,
windows, and lights in the school building.
An additional practice field was built on the
school grounds to accommodate more athletic
practices, and a state-of-the-art fitness and
wellness center was installed to encourage and
help all Holy Name students lead healthier
lifestyles.
Academically, Farmer is proud of the
College Credit Plus (CCP) Program that is
very unique to Holy Name. The program,
formerly called PSEOP, allows sophomore,
junior, and senior students to take postsecondary enrollment courses on the Holy
Name campus during the academic day.
During these courses, students earn both high
school and college credit at the same time.
“When combined with the AP courses that
are also available, students can potentially earn
over 50 semester hours of college credit. It’s a
tremendous opportunity to make available,”
said Farmer.
Although all of these initiatives have helped
the school grow and remain strong, Farmer
says his most important accomplishment as
president has been the financial management
of the school. “I’m happy to say that Holy
Name is fiscally sound, and will be able
to provide students with an outstanding
educational experience for years to come,”
he said.
Farmer is unsure of what his plans are for
next school year, but he expects to remain
active in education. “Education is my passion,
and it has been a privilege to work at a school
with as much energy and spirit as Holy Name,”
he said. “Wherever my path takes me next,
I will carry the wonderful memories I have
from here with me.”

NEW FACULTY & STAFF
Holy Name Welcomes New Faculty, Staff,
and Administrators for 2014-2015 School Year
FACULTY
Amy Hirzel
E N G L I S H T E AC H E R
Amy Hirzel discovered the
power of literature as a child
and she wants to share that
experience with her students.
Hirzel joined the Holy Name
English Department this
fall to teach English IV and
Honors English I. She brings
a consider able am ount of
experience as she has taught 11
different subjects in her six years
of teaching, ranging from AP
Literature to Speech and Drama.
Hirzel’s classes will help
students improve their reading,
writing, speaking, listening, and
thinking skills, while also bringing
them into a deeper understanding
and appreciation of what they
are reading.
“I want them to analyze the
author/reader relationship to
discover the power that words
hold and determine what the
writer is trying to communicate
to the reader,” she explained.
“There is a difference between
summarizing and analyzing a text,
which is something they will learn
throughout the year. I try to focus
my classes a lot on writing so my
students will get used to it. They
will have to do a lot of writing
when they reach college, so if I
can make that easier, that is great.
“In the end, I hope that they
will fall in love with reading the
10
same way I did.”
Hirzel was excited for the
opportunity to join the Holy
Name community for a variety
of reasons.
“There is a different attitude
here as you have the opportunity
to engage in discussions with
students on a different level,”
she said. “I’m also from Parma,
and my husband, Greg ’04, is a
graduate of Holy Name so I’ve
known about the high academic
standards here. The students are
great and the staff is amazing.
This is the best choice I could
have made.”
Daniel Humphrey ’09

Daniel Humphrey ’09 moves
easily among his students,
encouraging them as they work.
It ’s just another day in
Humphrey’s art class at Holy
Name.
Humphrey joined the Fine
Arts Department this fall and
will teach Basic Design, Digital
Photography, and Computer
Graphic Design, and serve as
the Yearbook’s faculty advisor.
While this is only his second year
as a full-time teacher, Humphrey
is already an accomplished
educator, as he is the recipient
of the 2014 New Professional
Art Educator of the Year Award
from the National Art Education
Association.
And it all began in the same
HOLY NAME HIGH SCHOOL | holynamehs.com
classroom that Humphrey now
calls his own.
“I was always interested in art,
but it was Karen Sorace-Thomas
at Holy Name who was the first
teacher to tell me I should pursue
a career in the arts,” Humphrey
said. “Some of the teachers I had
are still here, and what they did
for me has a direct impact on my
teaching style.”
While Humphrey works to help
his students appreciate, enjoy,
and participate in the creative
aspect of art, he also wants to
create a space where students
feel welcomed.
“I want to go above and beyond
the curriculum and give them life
lessons,” he explained. “I want to
focus on providing them with 21st
century skills, and art is perfect
for that because it gives the
students an opportunity to learn
from their mistakes. Hopefully,
the students will walk away from
my class with a creative mindset
and a strong work ethic.”
A 2013 graduate of Kent State
University where he majored in art
education and minored in fine arts
and education, Humphrey said he
feels motivated by the opportunity
to teach at his alma mater.
“As a graduate of the school,
Holy Name has been on my
radar as a place to come back
to,” he said. “There is a family
atmosphere and spirit about the
school that always makes you feel
welcomed. The mutual respect
between myself and the students
is also really strong, which makes
my job easier.”
Lillian Paul
F R E N C H T E AC H E R
Lillian Paul, who joined Holy
N a m e’s Fo re i g n L a n g u a ge
Department this fall to teach
French, knew she wanted to be an
educator early on. An inspirational
high school teacher deepened her
love for the profession and led
her down the path to become a
teacher herself.
After earning a bachelor’s
degree in French and education
and a master’s in French literature
at Ohio University, Paul worked
for the past four years as a
French teacher at New London
High School. Prior to college, she
spent a year as a foreign exchange
student in Belgium, which helped
her develop her language skills and
her understanding of European
culture, aspects that she brings
to her students.
“My main goal is to help my
students learn about other
cultures, learn that people
have differences, and develop
a cultural understanding of
France,” she said. “That is really
important to me.”
While understanding the
country’s culture, politics, and
history is an important part of
her classes, Paul also wants her
students to leave the classroom
learning how to speak the French
language. “I want my students to
be able to walk away at the end of
the year confident that they can
have a conversation in French,”
Paul said. “I want to make a bigger
impact on them than just making
sure they can say bonjour.”
The opportunity to work in
an environment like Holy Name
NEW FACULTY & STAFF
appealed to Paul when she
decided to make a career move.
“I was not familiar with private
schools, but I was looking for a
new experience,” she said. “The
way the students are hardworking
and dedicated also gave me a good
impression about the school. I’ve
been very impressed with how
enthusiastic my students are
about learning French and their
openness to learning new things.”
Rich Kozub ’01
SOCIAL STUDIES
T E AC H E R
Rich Kozub is all about the
real world when it comes to his
students.
A 2001 graduate of Holy Name,
Kozub joined the Social Studies
Department this fall where he
teaches U.S. History, AP World
History, and Civilizations. During
his classes, he challenges his
students in a supportive way while
sharing personal experiences to
help put the current subject into
perspective.
It is all part of his plan to
educate his students beyond
just the facts and figures found
in a textbook.
“I try to take the content from
the classroom and match it to a
real world experience, leaving the
textbook as a secondary source
if you need help,” he explained. “I
want to make sure my students
gain critical thinking skills that will
help them succeed in life.
“The more in-depth you can go
into a subject, the more interested
the students are, which means
they are enjoying the subject
matter more. In my class, I want
my students to have an open mind
and be willing to put themselves
in someone else’s shoes.”
Kozub was drawn to the
teaching profession by the
dual influences of his mother,
who was a teacher, and his own
experiences as a student. When
the opportunity to teach at Holy
Name presented itself, Kozub was
eager to return to a place that he
says “feels like home.”
“My experiences as a student
here were phenomenal,” he said.
“I still have a group of about 10
friends who I am still connected to
and we attribute our friendship to
Holy Name, so some of the draw
to return was the opportunity to
give back to the school.
“Another factor is that what we
stand for academically is in line
with my own beliefs that academic
rigor and Catholic values are very
important. The experience keeps
getting better and better each day
as I am building a rapport with the
students and the faculty.”
Terrence
Kenneally ’67
IRISH STUDIES
T E AC H E R
Spend just a few minutes with
Terrence Kenneally ’67 and one
thing becomes abundantly clear
– he loves Ireland almost as much
as he loves Holy Name.
Kenneally is blending those
two loves this year by offering
an Irish Studies elective course
as a member of the school’s
Social Studies Department. In
the class, students spent the fall
learning about the history of the
Emerald Isle, while in the spring,
Kenneally has turned his focus to
Irish literature. He developed the
course after earning a master’s
degree in Irish studies from John
Carroll University.
“Anyone who knows me knows
I have Ireland written all over me,”
said Kenneally, whose ancestors
emigrated to America in 1851
during the Irish potato famine.
“Because of that I’ve always had
an interest in Ireland and I want
my students to come away with
an appreciation of the country.”
In addition to studying topics
such as Oliver Cromwell’s time in
Ireland, Kenneally has brought in
a variety of speakers to his class.
So far this year, his students have
had the opportunity to hear from
Irish Supreme Court Justice
Adrian Hardiman; Donncha
O’Connell, head of the law school
at the National University Ireland
Galway; and Dr. Ruan O’Donnell,
a senior lecturer at the University
of Limerick.
The class also visited
Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum
at Quinnipiac University in
Connecticut, and viewed the
University’s special exhibit on
The Lady Sligo Letters: Westport
House and Ireland’s Great Hunger.
A former member of the Holy
Name Advisory Board, Kenneally
has deep roots at the school. He
met his wife, Susan (Cejka) ’67,
here, and three of their children,
Terry Jr. ’86, Sean ’87, and Erin
’89, are graduates. In addition,
Kenneally was inducted into the
Holy Name Hall of Fame in 1979,
an honor he shares with Sean
and Erin.
“I love Holy Name,” Kenneally
said when asked why he wanted
to teach a class at his alma mater.
“I always have.”

Rebecca Williams ’08
G U I DA N C E C O U N S E L O R
After spending the past two
years in Holy Name High School’s
Admissions Office, Rebecca
Williams ’08 has joined the
Guidance Counseling Office as
a guidance counselor. She will
work one-on-one with students
on their current classes and
interests as they navigate the
college admission process.
“I want to help educate them
to select a major that will work for
them,” Williams explained. “We
have developed relationships with
colleges, which can help give our
students an edge. Also, working in
admissions helped prepare me to
speak with students and parents
and having that voice is just as
important in college guidance. I
want to make sure the students
are comfortable talking with me
and know that our office is always
open if they have any questions.”
In addition to her role as a
guidance counselor, Williams is
head coach of the junior varsity
girls’ soccer team, a student
government moderator, and an
assistant Ski Club moderator.
She earned a bachelor’s degree
at Ohio Dominican University and
is currently working on a master’s
degree in youth development
leadership from Clemson
University.
“Becky has been a welcomed
addition to the department,”
said Beth Ann Ritt, head of the
Guidance Counseling Office.

OF ADMISSIONS
Emily Balodis ’10 has joined
the Holy Name Admissions
Office as the assistant director
of admissions. In addition to her
role in the Admissions Office,
Balodis is also the varsity girls’
soccer head coach.
As part of the Admissions
Office, Balodis helps coordinate
shadow days and open houses,
an d tr avels to elem ent ar y
school fairs to promote Holy
Name to prospective students.
In addition, Balodis is working
with the school administration
to develop and grow the types
of programs Holy Name offers
in the summer.
“Holy Name made me the
person I am today,” Balodis said.
“I now want to go out and promote
the school to kids so they can
receive the same opportunity that
Holy Name provided for me. If
you read any essay I ever wrote,
they all say I want to be able to be
back at this school because it is
so welcoming. There are no set
groups of students or the kind
of separation that a lot of high
schools have.”
Balodis was a four-year
letter winner, two-time captain,
and a member of the school’s
2006 state championship girls’
soccer team as a player at Holy
12
Name. She went to Notre Dame
College in South Euclid, where
she majored in theology, and
made 13 starts during her college
soccer career. Those experiences
helped Balodis bring an athlete’s
perspective to her alma mater’s
soccer program.
While her new roles keep her
busy, Balodis is enjoying every
minute of it.
“I’m always looking to find new
ways to engage with prospective
students and promote Holy
Name,” she said. “This is exactly
where I want to be and I’m doing
what I want to do, so it really
doesn’t feel like a job.”

current with standardized testing
and graduation requirements,

and works closely with the
Admissions Office and Guidance
Counseling Office.
“My experience has provided
me with a big-picture view of
the school,” Carter said. “This
is just a phenomenal place to
be as the faculty, staff, parents,
and students are wonderful to
work with.”
Car ter’s experience as a
faculty member developed in
her an appreciation of the work
being done by Holy Name’s
dedicated teachers and a desire
to support those efforts as much
as she can.
“The amount of time and
dedication our teachers show
to the students makes everything
we do worthwhile,” she said. “I
believe this side of the desk
should work just as hard or
harder because the faculty is
working so hard.”
Carter added one more role this
year – parent – as her son, Joe, is
a member of the Class of 2018,
which only enhances her feelings
about the school community.
“This is home,” she said. “It
is a family with sound character
and integrity. The students are
awesome and this is just a great
place. The school hasn’t changed
much over the years and I want
everyone to know what a true joy
it is to work at Holy Name.”
Kate McCall ’05

Almost 10 years af ter
graduating from Holy Name,
Kate McCall ’05 is glad to be
back home. McCall joined the
Holy Name staff in November
as the new communications
associate. Her responsibilities
include overseeing the creation
of The Wave magazine, managing
website content, generating
social media posts, and writing
communications being sent to
alumni, parents, and prospective
students.
Before coming to Holy Name,
McCall worked as a marketing
communic ations specialist
for a promotional marketing
company in Cleveland. She
earned her bachelor’s degree
in communication and theatre
arts from John Carroll University,
and has a master’s degree from
Cleveland State University.
“My family has strong ties
to Holy Name, and I’m a fourthgeneration Namer. From the time
I was little, I remember being
excited for the day when I could
go here,” said McCall. “My goal in
this new position is to get others
excited just as I was, and to show
everyone what a wonderful school
we have that continues to thrive.”
McCall said she is amazed by
how many alumni routinely tell her
how much they loved their time
here, and one word is always used
to describe Holy Name: family.
“When I was a student here,
one of our mottos was ‘We’re more
than a school, we’re family.’ That
still holds true ten years later, and
now it’s my job to communicate
that Holy Name is still a family
that has a lot of great things going
on, and welcomes all,” she said.
“I look forward to sharing stories
about Holy Name, and encourage
everyone – students, parents,
teachers, alumni – to share any
good news they have by sending
information to me at kmccall@

Class of 2014
Commencement Exercises
T
VALEDICTORIAN TAYLOR VERBA ’14 AND SUPER BOWL CHAMPION
JOHN BANASZAK ’68 DELIVER MEMORABLE SPEECHES
he Class of 2014 joined the ranks
of Holy Name alumni during
Commencement exercises last May
23 at St. Columbkille Catholic
Church in Parma.
The 154 members of the class received
their diplomas from President and Principal
Benjamin Farmer to officially become
members of the 97th graduating class from the
school. The newest alumni gained acceptances
at more than 50 different colleges and
universities, and are now attending Baldwin
Wallace, Bowling Green, Case Western
Reserve, John Carroll, Kent State, Miami,
Ohio, St. Louis, Toledo, and more.
“The past four years we have all made
friends. But the greatest thing about our
years at Holy Name is that these friends have
left handprints on our hearts,” valedictorian
Taylor Verba ’14 said in her student address.
“Each person we have encountered at Holy
Name, classmates, teachers, or priests, has
helped make us into bright adults ready for
the next step in our lives. We have learned
lessons from each other that wouldn’t have
been possible in any other environment.
Somehow we, the Class of 2014, have not
only been changed ourselves, but we have
helped changed each other for the better.
“Through Holy Name, we learned that
although life was always changing and
threw us curve balls, God always helped us
hit the home run. We discovered our faith
individually, finding God through retreats,
Kairos, Cenacle, Caritas, service projects, and
our theology classes. As the Chapel is the heart
of Holy Name, it too was and forever will be
the heart of our Holy Name experience. As
we leave for our next life journeys, remember
what Holy Name has taught us: To take God
with you because he will never leave you.
Although our classmates may be far away,
God will always be close to us and serve as
a reminder of the faith-filled Class of 2014.”

his way from being a young man from the
“corner of Harvard and Broadway” to the top
of his chosen profession.
HOLY NAME HIGH SCHOOL | holynamehs.com
“Much of my success is due to the fact
that I have been associated with three elite
institutions: The Marines, the Pittsburgh
Steelers, and Holy Name,” he said. “The
many things my wife, Mary (Redig) ’68, and
I have shared in our lives have deep roots in
what was instilled in us at Holy Name. The
Christian values and morals along with the
principles of mind, body, and spirit, are in the
foundation of our marriage and our success.
“There are many people who were an
influence on my life. One of my favorite
high school teachers, Emil Maras, was one of
them. He taught us more than just Chaucer’s
The Canterbury Tales and Homer’s Odyssey,
he taught us boys about being tough guys,
reminding us that there is nothing wrong with
being a tough guy if you are a smart tough
guy. There is no doubt that in the next four
to six years you will need to be tough girls
and tough guys, because the world is a much
different place – everything you do and say
is subject to exposure. You must be diligent
about your privacy. What you write, video,

or photograph today can be used against you
years from now.
“My best advice is to find something you
are very passionate about and go for it with
every ounce of energy you can generate. Prove
people wrong and show everyone you can do
it. Be the best, be strong, be tough, be brave,
be proud, and be selfish. The next four to six
years are the most important ones in your
development, so you have to become very
selfish so you can guard your future with
the focus and determination necessary to
become successful.”
During his speech, Banaszak focused
on three men whose words and actions
had inspired him, including Sir Winston
Churchill, former Steelers Head Coach Chuck
Noll, and former Steelers Defensive Line
Coach George Perles.
“In a Commencement speech at
Cambridge, Winston Churchill said, ‘Never
give up. Never give up. Never give up.’ That is
the attitude that successful people must have,
because you will face tough times, difficult
situations, obstacles, and setbacks, but you
must never give up, you must fight hard, and
you must win.
Chuck Noll was my head coach in
Pittsburgh and his favorite words were,
‘Whatever it takes.’ I knew I only had one
chance to make that football team as a
25-year-old rookie, that I had to outwork
everybody and do whatever it takes, and I
was willing to do that.”
Banaszak then shared the advice he received
from George Perles. In his rookie year with
Pittsburgh, Banaszak, after playing only on
special teams for the first nine games of the
season, finally had his opportunity to enter the
tenth game on the defensive line due to injuries
to two other players. As Banaszak prepared
to run onto the field, Perles “pulled me back,
looked me in the eye, and said ‘Don’t blow
it.’ With that motivational message ringing
in my helmet I ran onto the field. I realized
that Coach Perles was absolutely right. This
was my one chance, my one opportunity to
prove to the other teams in the league that I
could play in the National Football League.”
In describing how he had taken full
advantage of opportunities as they arose,
Banaszak hoped to inspire the graduates to
do the same. “It is my hope,” he told them,
“that the Class of 2014 still believes that
America is the land of opportunity, because
your opportunity will come along at some
point, at some time. Now you may only have
one chance, one opportunity…but whatever
opportunity comes along, treat it like it is the
only opportunity you will ever get. If you can
do that, you will be very successful.”
Recognizing that his own address to the
graduates was longer than the nine-word
speech that Churchill delivered at Cambridge,
Banaszak summarized his speech by offering
his own nine words of advice to build a
foundation for future success.
“From Sir Winston Churchill, ‘Never give
up!’ From Chuck Noll, ‘Whatever it takes!’
And from my defensive line coach at the
Pittsburgh Steelers, ‘Don’t blow it!’”

HOLY NAME HIGH SCHOOL | holynamehs.com
n Friday, June 13 and Saturday,
June 14, alumni and friends of
Holy Name High School came
back to honor 100 years of faith,
family, and friendship. The celebration started
off with an All-School Reunion held in the
Memorial Gym on Friday night, with more
than 300 alumni from the classes of 1954,
1959, 1974, and many others coming together
to reminisce about their fun and memorable
times at Holy Name.
Saturday’s events started bright and early, as
hundreds of runners and walkers participated
in the annual 5K Run that starts at HN and
goes through the Big Creek Metroparks.
Mike Piszczor ’74 put in a few extra miles
and walked all the way from Holy Name
Church in Cleveland to Parma Heights. When
he arrived, he delivered a letter from Holy

Name’s pastor, the Rev. Msgr. Richard Antall.
Piszczor’s trip made clear the still-remaining
connection to the high school’s original
location on Harvard and Broadway, and the
Green Wave spirit that has been present for
the past 100 years at both campuses.
Before NamerFEST kicked off in the
afternoon, the Ohio Historical Marker
now located in front of the high school was
unveiled during a ceremony that recognized
HN’s rich history. The Rev. John Carlin
of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Parma
offered a blessing, while Parma Heights Mayor
Michael Byrne, HN President Benjamin
Farmer, and Dr. Brian Adams ’86 all spoke
to help commemorate this special event.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, it was
officially time for NamerFEST to begin! The
Nosh Box, Fired Up Taco, StrEAT Mobile
Bistro, and Honey Hut all set up their food
trucks and stands in the back parking lot to
serve delicious and unique dishes to visitors.
Bands such as The Liverpool Lads and
Cleveland’s Breakfast Club entertained on the
main stage, while HN students and volunteers
provided face painting, fun games, and a
photo booth to keep kids of all ages busy. The
beautiful day then concluded in the evening
with an outdoor Mass celebrated by the Rev.
Damian Ference ’94, and concelebrated by
the Rev. Neil Walters ’77 and the Rev. Dennis
Bogusz ’69.
Holy Name thanks all those who helped
to make the All-School Reunion and
NamerFEST a reality, especially our event
co-chairs Joe Laviano ’87, Mike Nowak ’74,
and Mark Priebe ’88. We also thank all who
attended and shared their love for Holy Name.
As Joe Laviano said in a post written for the
Holy Name website, “There were so many
moments where I noticed Namers of different
generations, separated by decades, sharing
their memories of how Holy Name is etched
forever in their hearts.”
Please mark your calendars to come back to
Holy Name once again this summer, June 12
and 13, 2015, for another All-School Reunion
and NamerFEST!

he Holy Name community joined
together on October 24 to honor a
trio of state championship teams
during the 2014 Athletic Hall of
Fame Induction Ceremony. Members of the
1975 football team, 1981 baseball team, and
2006 girls’ soccer team were on hand for the
induction ceremony – the first time the school
has honored entire teams with inclusion into
the Hall of Fame since its founding in 1976.
The 1975 football team became known as
the “Dream Team” by earning the school’s
first Class AA State Championship. After
compiling an 8-0 record in the regular season
and beating Cardinal Stritch in a playoff
semifinal, the Green Wave faced Cincinnati
Wyoming. In the final minutes of the game,
Kevin Hartman ’76 hit Greg Demarchi ’76
with a touchdown pass to give Holy Name
the lead. The defense then held, with Kevin
Boylan ’76 deflecting an apparent touchdown
pass in the closing seconds to ensure the
19-14 win for Coach Dick Donovan ’57
and the team.
“We all have fond memories of the 1975
season,” said Michael Cunningham ’76
in accepting the honor on behalf of his
teammates. “It brought together the
camaraderie of students, alumni, faculty,
family, and faith. This is the premise of the
Holy Name tradition, which will forever be in
our hearts. We have received lifelong lessons
and friendships from our experience at Holy
Name, and can never forget the building
blocks that were instilled.”
The 1981 baseball team won the Class AA
State Championship, the first state title in team
history, under the leadership of coaches Dave
Wilks ’65 and Larry Ream. In the state title
game, the Green Wave posted a two-run rally
in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat
Portsmouth 4-3 and earn the championship.
“I thought it was very nice of Holy Name
to honor our team,” said Wilks, who took

four teams to the state finals in 13 years as
head coach. “As a coach you try to stress the
idea of teamwork, and this team showed that
if you don’t have everyone working together,
you won’t win.”
In 2006 the girls’ soccer program brought
home its first state championship by defeating
defending Division II State Champion
Hamilton Badin in a shootout after a scoreless
regulation and two overtimes.
“I think all my teammates can agree that
the school support we felt is hard to articulate,”
said Becky Williams ’08 in accepting the
honor for her team. “Crowds of our peers
came and cheered at our games, becoming
a part of the atmosphere of post-season play.
A surprise send off from the student body
started our bus ride down to states. The love
and support from the Holy Name community
is what separates us from other schools.
“In a world that tries to teach every man for
himself, Holy Name taught us that teamwork
and friendship are incredibly stronger.”
The Holy Name High School Hall of
Fame includes close to 135 former players
and coaches, along with 130 individuals who
were enshrined after receiving service awards,
including the Doc Scullen Award, the Mother
Elizabeth Seton Award, the Fred & Ruth
Seitz Award, the Arata Family Award, and
the Special Humanitarian Award.

Pro-Life Club
Celebrates National
Chalk Day
More than 80 students took
over Holy Name’s back parking
lot on October 2 to participate
in National Pro-Life Chalk Day.
Pro-Life Club President Jennifer
DiGeronimo ’15 read about the
day online and mentioned it
to Mary Stringer Wallace ’85,
director of campus ministry. From
there, club members planned the
day of writing supportive and
positive pro-life messages, quotes,
and pictures. Their artwork was
featured in the Catholic Universe
Bulletin and recognized in a
contest sponsored by the Cleveland
Right to Life.
In addition to the National
Chalk Day, HN has been
involved in several other pro-life
events. More than 100 students
participated in October’s Catholic
Schools for Peace and Justice
Youth Mass and Rally for Life in
downtown Cleveland, and many
traveled to Washington, D.C. on
January 22 for the March for Life.
Students in History of Ireland Class
Visit Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum
in Connecticut
The first group of students to take the History of Ireland course
at Holy Name traveled to Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum with
Holy Name teacher Terry Kenneally ’67, to learn more about
the Irish. Students were able to
explore the interactive museum,
located at Quinnipiac University
in Hamden, CT, and ask the
museum’s director questions about
the art, sculptures, paintings, and
videos they saw while there. They
also were able to visit Quinnipiac’s
library, where they viewed a special exhibit called The Lady Sligo
Letters: Westport House and Ireland’s Great Hunger.
Before coming home, the students stopped at Yale University to
visit the well-known campus. They loved experiencing education
coming to life, and were grateful to Mr. Kenneally for making
the trip possible.
Holy Name High School Recognized
by Western Reserve Historical
Society’s 100 Year Club
During a ceremony on November 3, the Western Reserve
Historical Society honored Holy Name as a Northeast
Ohio institution that has been in existence for a century
or more, inducting HN into the WRHS’s 100 Year Club.
This event allowed HN representatives to connect with
other well-established organizations and to gather ideas
for how HN can continue to thrive in Northeast Ohio for
years to come.
Roberto Santiago ’18 Completes Eagle Scout Service Project
Completing an Eagle Scout Service Project before entering high school is uncommon,
but Roberto Santiago ’18 did not let his age deter him from successfully finishing his
unique project last spring. Roberto, along with a team of more than 100 volunteers
that he organized and led, created 18 six feet by eight feet colored sawdust carpets.
The carpets, a Central American tradition named Las Alfombras de Semana Santa,
depict holy images and are typically displayed during the Holy Week before Easter.
Roberto’s project was revealed on Holy Thursday and Good Friday 2014 at his parish,
La Sagrada Familia in Cleveland. Parishioners and visitors marveled at the carpets,
which had been drawn with stencils before the sawdust was applied. Messages were
written in both Spanish and English. Roberto continues to be involved in his parish
community while participating in football and the string ensemble at HN. He is a
graduate of Metro Catholic Grade School and is the son of Roberto and Elisa Santiago.

The Holy Name community is saddened to hear of the death of George Eppley, Ph.D.,
Principal of Holy Name from 1960-1968. Mr. Eppley was an accomplished writer and
professor who also was a founding member of Providence House. He leaves behind his
wife, Anita, and many nieces and nephews.
We also extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. Thomas Disantis,
a former HN English teacher who passed away this fall. Both Mr. Eppley and
Mr. Disantis will be missed by our community, and their contributions will never be
forgotten.

HOLY NA ME HIGH SCHOOL
DONOR ROLL
Dear Alumni and Friends,
It is with sincere gratitude that
we share with you the 2013-2014
Annual Giving Report. In our
100th Anniversary year, Holy
Name High School experienced
a generous outpouring of
philanthropic support from
alumni, parents, and friends,
demonstrating a continuing
love and loyalty for the school.
Each gift, regardless of size, made
a difference within the school
community and helped to provide
a first-rate education for current
students and helped to ensure that
the school is prepared to educate
future generations of Namers.
This report lists donors and
outright gifts of cash received
by the School between July 1,
2013 and June 30, 2014. We
deeply appreciate the alumni,
parents, grandparents, faculty,
staff, friends, corporations,
Summary of Fiscal Year
2013-2014 Contributions
Annual Unrestricted ....................................................... $173,508
Annual Restricted...................................................................$45,015
Capital ..................................................................................................$157,864
Endowment ........................................................................................ $51,200
Scholarships .................................................................................$109,674
TOTAL................................................................................... $537,261
and foundations who have so
generously conf irmed their
commitment to Holy Name
during this past fiscal year.
Total annual and capital cash
donations received in the fiscal
year 2013-2014 was $537,261.
As part of that total, the Annual
Fund set a new record with total
unrestricted giving of $173,508
from 1,120 donors.
Although all donations for any
purpose are gratefully received,
this unrestricted fund, also
known as our Annual Fund,
is the school’s most important
fundraising drive. For every
student at Holy Name, the full
cost of an education exceeds
the cost of tuition. This is not
unique to Holy Name – it is true
for most private high schools, as
well as colleges and universities
throughout the United States.
The Annual Fund helps to fill
this gap. All of the money raised
in the Annual Fund goes directly
into the current year’s operating
budget to meet the areas of
greatest need and benefits the
students immediately. In short,
Holy Name students’ educational
experiences are directly affected
each and every day by donations
to the Annual Fund.
On behalf of the entire Holy
Name community, thank you
for every gift you made, every
volunteer hour you served,
every event you attended, and
every student you assisted. Your
support allows Holy Name to
thrive and reveals that true Holy
Name Spirit.
With gratitude,
Ray Murphy
Director of Advancement

The Thomas P. Talty
Scholarship
The Thomas P. Talty Scholarship Fund at
Holy Name High School was established on
September 17, 1984 in memory of Thomas
P. Talty, a member of the graduating class
of 1930. His family and friends, as an
expression of their love and continuing
respect and admiration for the ideals he
cherished and practiced, and in recognition
of the many personal sacrifices he made
so that other family members could be
educated, were proud to make possible this
scholarship fund in his name and memory.
The purpose of this fund was to provide
financial assistance for worthy students
who would not otherwise be able to enroll
at Holy Name High School, or having
entered would be unable to complete
their education at Holy Name due to
financial difficulties. From 1985 to 2005
approximately $300,000 was donated
to the Thomas P. Talty Scholarship Fund
by family members, alumni, and friends.
In 2005, Holy Name High School
received a $1 million donation from the
Michael and Helen Talty Charitable Trust,
stipulating that the money be added to
the current Talty Scholarship Fund. The
award was made in eight equal annual

installments of $125,000. This charitable
trust was made possible through the
estate of Francis Talty, a member of the
class of 1938 and a brother of Thomas
P. Talty. The trust stipulates that the
financial aid only come from the interest
earned on the funds donated.
We are happy to report that currently
20 renewable scholarships (given to five
students from each class), each worth
$1,700, are provided to deserving students.
The selection process begins in March
when applications are made available
to all incoming freshmen students. Each
year a committee is formed that reviews
these applications, and five students are
chosen. A grantee’s continuing eligibility
is determined at the conclusion of each
school year by the Executive Director of
this Fund.
The generosity of the Talty family
continues, as we received an additional
$52,000 in 2013 to be added to the
Thomas P. Talty Scholarship Fund. To date,
149 students have been the recipients of
this renewable scholarship. We are truly
fortunate to have the Talty family as part
of the Holy Name High School family and
we thank them again for their continued
support of Holy Name. They have made
a difference for so many of our students.

Planned Giving
The Legacy Society was founded in 2004 to recognize
the generosity and thoughtfulness of alumni, parents,
teachers, and others who have created gifts that will
benefit the school in the future. Membership is reserved
for those who provide for Holy Name High School in the
following manner: in their wills or living trusts; by funding
life income arrangements (charitable gift annuities and
charitable remainder trusts); by making gifts of life
insurance and retirement plan assets; or by establishing
charitable lead trusts. Membership is also granted to
those who establish a permanent endowed named fund
of $25,000 or more.
This past fiscal year, Holy Name was notified of bequests
from the estates of the following individuals, and we are
honored to include them in The Legacy Society.
Geraldine M. Kempski ’49
Frank F. Schueller
Ronald & Maureen Zupancic (P’81, ’82, ’83, ’92)
We greatly appreciate the vision, generosity, and
support of these individuals, and all members of The
Legacy Society. By leaving a gift to Holy Name in your will
or estate plan, donors not only help ensure Holy Name’s
future strength and well-being, but can design planned
gifts that will be advantageous to both them and Holy
Name. As you create your personal estate plans, you
may be able to lower your tax rates with deferred-giving
arrangements. We suggest that you consult with your
financial planner or attorney before making a planned
gift to determine your best charitable option.
If you have already named Holy Name in your will,
please let us know so we may thank you and welcome
you to The Legacy Society. To become a member or for
more information, contact Ray Murphy at (440) 8860300, ext. 111 or rmurphy@holynamehs.com.

DONOR PROFILE:
Frances Ondik ’42
Frances Ondik ’42 has an adventurous
spirit about her, one that started to develop
when she first entered the halls of Holy
Name High School in
the fall of 1938.
As the only student
from the former
Nativity Elementary
School to matriculate
that year to Holy Name,
Ondik embraced the
opportunity to meet
a new group of friends
from different parts
of the city. She carried that willingness
to immerse herself into a new setting
and grow from the experience through
her 43-year career with the airline and
travel industry, which allowed her to visit
virtually every corner of the globe.
Ondik was one of five siblings to attend
Holy Name, joining her sisters, Margaret ’32,
Agnes ’41, and Ann; and her brother, Father
Michael ’29, who later worked for the school

and Holy Name Church. Her appreciation
of the foundation that Holy Name placed
under her was part of the reason why Ondik
decided to make a planned gift to the
school.
“I received a very good education
because the priests and the nuns took
individual interest in the students,” Ondik
said. “The school stressed religion and we
would always see someone going to the
church during the day – it was very good
for our faith.
“I am also the last one of my family and
supporting Holy Name just felt like the best
thing to do – I want to give my money to
support the school’s educational mission
because I got a lot out of it.”
73 years after she graduated, Ondik
still has fond memories of her time at
Holy Name.
“We always had pep rallies before any
big game and when we came back to
campus the priests would be there for us,
win or lose,” she said.
“Everybody was so nice and I made
some very good friends.”

DONOR PROFILE:
Bill ’56 and
Judy Cheney
Bill ’56 and Judy Cheney
know firsthand the value and
importance of a Catholic
education.
Cheney attributes his
education at Holy Name,
along with hard work, with
laying the foundation for a
successful business career.
While attending his 55th Reunion, he saw
that many of the same values present when
he was a student were still in place at the
school. After that visit it became clear to
the Cheneys that the school deserved their
support in the form of a special unrestricted
gift to the Annual Fund as Holy Name
recognized its 100th anniversary.
“I feel strongly that Holy Name was
good to Judy and me and that we needed
to do something to support the mission
of the school,” Cheney said. “I not only
received a great education, but Holy Name
was where I also met friends for life. When
I reflect back on the days I attended there,
I realize it gave me a great foundation to
build upon as we raised a family and built
a career.”

Name, Cheney worked before
enlisting in the Marines.
Upon returning to civilian
life, he resumed his work
in business while earning
a degree from Cleveland
State University. During his
impressive career, Cheney
was a general manager with
Harvard Manufacturing in
Cleveland, and president of
the Steadley Co. in Carthage,
MO, which he and a group
of investors eventually purchased. He
also was a key member in the founding
of two community banks, and served on
the boards of several businesses, financial
institutions, and a hospital.
By his side through it all has been his
wife, Judy, who has grown fond of Holy
Name through the years.
“Judy and I have been married for 53
years. While we attended different schools,
she always enjoyed my friends at Holy
Name. We really enjoyed Bob Pattie, the
Holy Name band director, and his band,”
Cheney said. “We met as juniors in high
school and Judy still talks about how great
those days were when we attended Holy
Name functions.
“Holy Name was just a great school and
left me with fond memories.”

DONOR PROFILE:
Elizabeth Trouten Volpe ’03
E
lizabeth Trouten Volpe ’03 is a busy person.
A licensed physical therapist with the MetroHealth
System in Cleveland who specializes in outpatient,
women’s health, and orthopedic treatments, and is certified
in the management and treatment of lymphedema, Volpe
describes her job as one that is “fast paced, makes me
think and, sometimes, makes me tired.”
That is why being able to make her Annual Fund
contribution to Holy Name using the school’s online
monthly payment plan was a convenient
option for her.
“When I sat down at the start of the
year to decide my charitable contributions,
I knew I wanted to donate money to
something that is local,” Volpe said. “The
fact that you can make your donation
online makes it easy to support Holy Name
and, in some ways, makes the school more accessible.”
Volpe, who earned a bachelor’s degree from the
University of Dayton and a doctorate in physical therapy
from Cleveland State University, first learned about the
importance of helping others as a student at Holy Name.
“We had community service projects that made me
realize that if everyone does just a little bit, a lot of
goodwill can be accomplished in the world,” she said.
Volpe has remained connected to the school since
graduating through her siblings, Alex ’06 and Allison ’12.
She has a handful of friends from Holy Name who she sees
on a regular basis, and also reconnected with classmates
during her 10-year reunion in 2013.
Those experiences made supporting Holy Name an
easy decision for Volpe.
“I had a positive experience at Holy Name,” she said,
“and I would like the school to be able to continue to
provide students with an experience that was similar
to mine.”

Holy Name High School Centennial Prayer
Written by the Rev. William Krizner, former Chaplain of Holy Name High School
Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal Son of the Living God!
All praise to You, whose Name is above all other names, whose Name is Holy: resplendent in brightness and glory.
For 100 years you have graciously blessed our school and through the dedication, the witness,
and example of pastors and administrators, women of religious consecration, devoted teachers,
and a steadfast staff, Your Word has been imparted and your wisdom has formed hearts and minds.
Ever grateful, we ask your continued blessings upon our school. Be mindful, O Lord, of our alumni and benefactors.
Welcome into eternity those who have gone before us marked in faith.
Instill within our hearts a burning desire to honor and to keep Holy Your Name.
As you have so blessed us may we, in turn, be a blessing to one another. Guide our actions,
make vibrant our witness, and help us to grow in charity, in wisdom, and in generous service to your people.
Through the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, may our school community
continue to be a reflection of your love and your constant mercy.
Confident in your love and with sincere gratitude, we ask this in Your Most Holy Name,
through the Holy Spirit who lives and reigns with You as our One God, forever and ever. Amen.
All praise and glory to the Most Holy Name of Jesus both now and forever!
