Just a Reminder:
Please excuse absences within 48

Excused absence means the
student should be out of the
building and off campus. Thank you
for your support. Grandview High
School is a closed campus during
the school day for all 9th and 10th
graders, which means freshmen
and sophomores may not leave
campus during the school day
without proper parent/guardian
notification. As an exception, those
sophomores with a valid driver’s
license and GHS Parking Permit
(which means they are in good
standing with their academics,
behavior, and attendance) may
come and go during the school day
as their schedule allows.
Before fall break our students participated in
College Readiness Day. On December 2
during PLC time in the lecture center, our
juniors will receive their practice ACT test scores and have a representative from Kaplan discuss individual results. Our freshmen and
sophomores will receive their ACT ASPIRE scores over the next two
months in English classes. Overall, our students did very well on
these district assessments, and our staff will use this data to inform
instruction moving forward. We also hosted parent/teacher conferences on October 21. Thank you to those parents who participated
in our first night of parent/teacher conferences. The second night of
conferences for this school year will be on February 25. We also
appreciate our community members who took the time to vote on
November 3 and help determine the future leadership of Cherry
Creek Schools. Congratulations to incumbent David Willman and to
newly elected board members Janice McDonald and Eric Parish.
Over the last month, many of our fall sports teams completed their
seasons and represented Grandview well at both the regional and
state levels. We continue to root for our Wolves in cheerleading,
football, poms, and volleyball as they compete in state playoffs and
competitions.
The winter sports season starts on Thursday,
November 12, and interested athletes should register in the athletic
office. The fall musical is also right around the corner. Our student
actors, stage crew, and directors will entertain our community with a
production of the classic children’s book The Secret Garden on
November 19-21. We also invite our community to participate in
STEAM-a-Palooza, a free Grandview feeder event which will
celebrate K-12 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and
Math) opportunities for students. More information is available on
our website for this November 21 event. Many other clubs and activities are in full swing, and we look forward to updating you on their
progress in the December newsletter.
Grandview High School will take time to celebrate military veterans
this week (November 9-13). We are proud to display American flags
throughout the week along Arapahoe Road. Activities for this week
also include dropping off goodie bags and notes at the VA Hospital,
inviting veterans to be guest speakers, displaying a “Wall of Honor”
for military service men and women, and hosting a breakfast to
celebrate our community’s veterans. Please contact our main office
if you are an active service man or woman or a veteran and would
like to participate in any of these activities.
We have released the first and second semester final exam schedule
on the Grandview website. Please take time to help your student(s)
plan their final exam schedule in December as we near the end of
the semester.
Each day, I am thankful for our students, parents, guardians, staff,
and community members that make Grandview High School what it
is. We will host our annual “Thankful for our Students” celebration on
Monday, November 23, where our administrators will distribute free
ice cream and popsicles to students during all lunches.

The World of Sports:
Happy November! It is hard to believe that November has arrived. We
hope you all had a great fall break and were able to find some time to
relax and rejuvenate. The fall season is winding down with the final teams
entering the playoffs. The winter season will begin on November 12 th.
Enjoy the updates below.
Cross Country (Head Coach Allyson Robbins,
arobbins2@cherrycreekschools.org) The Wolves have been busy the
last three weeks with league, regionals and state meets. Both teams finished second at league.
Brie Oakley ran well and earned a league title while Cory Smith and Ben Ehrhard finish
back-to-back, fifth and sixth, for the Wolves.
A week later they ran the same course for regionals although the weather was much different,
wet and sloppy. The boys and girls both finished in third place as a team and qualified for state
as a team. The individual places are below.
Last Saturday the team headed to Colorado Springs for the state meet in a cool but dry event.
The boys finished 19th with Ehrhard’s finishing the fastest for the Wolves in 38 th place. The girls
were just five points away from matching their best team finish in school history of eighth place
coming in at ninth place. Oakley again ran well, finishing in second place just two seconds
behind the winner. Caroline Robbins also had a good run finishing in 37 th. All of the individual
places for the runners that participated in the state event are below.

Field Hockey (Head Coach Desiree Crocker, dbcrocker@aps.k12.co.us) The Wolves
suffered two close losses in their final games of the season. They lost 0-1 to Palmer Ridge who
scored in overtime to get the win. They lost a tough battle against Mountain Vista who scored
two back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the game. Megan Matthews had 14 saves in goal
to keep the Wolves in the game. They missed the postseason this year but fought hard in many
games. We are proud of the Wolves and Coach Crocker on their fight this season.
Football (Head Coach John Schultz, jschultz2@cherrycreekschools.org) Two weeks ago
the Wolves took down the at the time undefeated Bruins, 28-20, which wasn’t as close as the
score indicates. Blubaugh was multi-faceted in the win, rushing for, catching and throwing a
touchdown. Gunner Gentry caught the touchdown pass from Blubaugh and Quinn Stokes
caught another from Gunnar Lamphere. Dom Chapa and Deandre Shorts led the teams with 12
and 11 tackles. Marcus Lawrence also had an interception for the Wolves.
They followed that up with a commanding win over Overland 42-14, where the team saw
multiple Wolves contribute. Last Friday was the game for the league title between the Wolves
and Valor Christian. The Wolves made some costly errors in the second quarter but played them
pretty even the rest of the way. The errors cost the Wolves in the end as they lost 14-31. They
finished the regular season 7-2 and earned a second place finish in the very competitive
Centennial League. The postseason bracket came out yesterday and the Wolves have earned
one of the four #1 seeds.

Boys’ Soccer (Head Coach Brian Wood, bwood@cherrycreekschools.org) The Wolves
went 2-1 in their final three games of the season. They beat Eaglecrest 3-1 off goals from Erik
Lundeen, Raymond Jackson and Tyler Pak as well as an assist from Pak and Joseph George.
They followed that up with a tight win 1-0 over a scrappy Overland team. Cody Mickles scored
the lone goal and Jack Whalen defended the shutout in goal. In their final game of the season
they came up on the short end falling 1-2 to Cherry Creek. The Wolves had some close losses
this year which ultimately kept them out of the postseason. This young team will look to come
back and be a postseason contender next year.

Softball (Head Coach Dave Thies, dlthies@msn.com) The Wolves opened a little sluggishly
at regionals and dropped their first game 0-10. The came back alive in the second game
shutting out Pine Creek 8-0. Jordyn McDaniel got the shutout victory to go along with a 2-run
homerun from Loghan Thomas. To earn a spot in the state tournament they would have to play
Dakota Ridge again with the winner moving on. The Wolves played solid defense and got the
offense going to take down the same opponent that had beat them earlier in the day, winning
5-2. The second place regional finish gave them the 11th seed at state where they faced Fort
Collins in opening game. The team played well from start to finish and won the game 8-4.
Courtney Browne got the win on the mound where you also saw McDaniel come in as relief.
Thomas and Tori Woolums had some great plays on defense, Alex Velazquez got things going
with some alert base running and Thomas hit a 2-run triple. Sydni Odegard, Velazquez and
Morgan Quimby all had key base hits to keep the offense going or score key runs. With the win,
the Wolves would face Pomona next in the quarterfinals. The Wolves had to play catch up the
entire game and came up against an opponent that was red hot on offense. They eventually lost
3-9. Congratulations to the Wolves on their league championship and top 8 teams finish.

Tennis (Head Coach Jeff Ryan, jryan10@cherrycreekschools.org) Ben Warren qualified for
the state tournament by winning his regional as the #3 Singles. He lost his first round match
1-6, 2-6 and was not able to get back in the tournament during the playback match. The #2
doubles team of Chris Burris and Matthew Yan also won their regional. They split the first two
sets in their opening match (4-6, 6-3). They fought hard in the opening set but came up short
falling 4-6. They were also not lucky enough to receive a second chance in the playback match.
Congratulations to the state qualifiers and Coach Ryan on their season.

Volleyball (Head Coach Patty Childress, pchildress@cherrycreekschools.org) The Wolves
finished the regular season games 5-0 beating Smoky Hill 3-0, Mullen 3-1, Eaglecrest 3-1 and
Overland 3-0. They wrapped up the final game by beating Lakewood 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-13,
26-24). Madisen Busler had 27 kills and was key on offense along with Raychel Reed who was
solid in her passing. This past Friday and Saturday they went 2-2 at the Cheyenne Mountain
tournament where Busler, Fran Reed and Marina Schlaepfer were key on the attack, set-up by
solid passing from Busler, Reed and Brennah Gaston. The Wolves received the #8 seed for
playoffs.
Cheers (Head Coach Christina Maccarrone, christinamaccarrone@gmail.com) The cheers
opened the competition season this past weekend at the Southern Regional in Pueblo where
they finished in a respectable 2nd place, just 0.1 from first.
Cheers took 1st place and the title of Centennial League Champions, Wednesday Evening. Go
Wolves!

their competition season this past weekend.

Activities at a glance
Activities (co-curricular, performance
based, honor societies, service learning,
associations, interest clubs, competitive,
unify) prepare students for the future.
The normal curriculum can only go as far to
teach and educate students about academic
theories. Activities provide the opportunity for students to
apply what they have learned in practice to real world
settings and outcomes, thus creating a more well-rounded
student.
I want to say send a special thank you to our community
for their support during our Homecoming Week
celebrations and our first ever PINK Week celebration.
Without all of you, those two amazing weeks would not
have happened. That is why it is great to be a wolf!

The jazz bands kicked off the new school year with a performance and desserts
on October 6th. Come see them again on December 3rd.
Jasmine's Answer for Cancer Bags
Jasmine's Cancer Bags are inspired by her personal loss. On September 21, 2013, Jasmine
suffered a huge tragedy during homecoming. She lost her Aunt Jody to cancer. She became
very passionate after the tragic event and realized she wanted to raise awareness about the
powerful impact cancer can have on everyone. In September of 2015 Jasmine enrolled in
Grandview High School and started attending William Baird's Entrepreneurship class. Jasmine
saw this class as a great opportunity to start her business and further her passion. She created
the Answer for Cancer business. The business creates bags of courage that contain inspirational
messages and items for all those affected by cancer. She sells the bags for $5 and stated, "It is
not about the profit, but instead helping inspire those affected by cancer." Her first event took
place at the Grandview Varsity Football's Pink Week game. She sold 30 bags in 30 minutes! The
community is now asking this teen Phenom to create bags and sell them at other
events. Jasmine is inspired to take the Answer for Cancer to a state and national level and is
currently writing her business plan in entrepreneurship. She is determined to be the answer for
cancer.

The Grandview Rock and Roll History Class visited Peakview
Assisting Living on Tuesday, October 20th to give group
presentations to the residents about various rock artists that
they’ve been researching. The residents enjoyed hearing
about different kinds of music and listening to tracks that the
students had researched.
The Grandview Concert Orchestra visited Peakview Assisted
Living on Thursday, October 22nd to give a Halloween-themed
concert and paint pumpkins with the residents. The students
and residents alike really enjoyed the visit, and are making
plans for more collaborative activities.

wide variety of music for the residents as a part of community

conductors during our event at UNC Greeley this past
weekend (November 5th-7th).
Grandview FBLA attends
Walk for Sudan
FBLA Wins "Best HS Group Participation" and placed Top 3 for Team Fundraising as well
as Top 5 for Individual fundraising. Grandview FBLA raised funds for The Nuba water project
in October and also walked in the 9th annual Walk for Sudan.- See more at: http://

Mission of Nuba Water Project
The mission is to bring clean water to the Sudanese people of the Nuba Mountains. We do
that by developing water infrastructure and by providing water purification education and
resources. Our work is for the benefit of all Nuba people regardless of religious or ethnic
association. Note: In response to the current crisis in the Nuba Mountains, we have expanded
our work to include humanitarian relief by purchasing and delivering food, soap, salt, and

What’s happening in the FACS dept. Culinary classes?
Let’s take a look!
Culinary Nutrition – 10-12th grade
We just wrapped up learning about the 6 essential nutrients our bodies need to
function properly! This picture is the winning salad from the fruit pizza lab (there
was fruit, so it was healthy-ish J). Throughout the semester we also learn about
yeast breads and make pizza, healthy dishes and make salad with homemade
dressing, protein and make various types of chili, substituting ingredients and
make chocolate chip cookies (we even make cookies with avocados! YUM!),
and a breakfast lab to end the semester!
This picture is of our district dietician discussing the fat content found in some
common fast food meals we all love! Great visual representation using lard on
burgers- we call them BLUBBER BURGERS! Yuck!
Gourmet Foods- 10-12th Grade (Pre-REq: Pass Culinary Nutrition)
In Gourmet foods, we are in our international units! For the France unit, we
made creative crepes! Pictured above are red velvet crepes, feta & mushroom
crepes, and strawberry dessert crepes! Bon appetite!
For the Italy unit, students made homemade pasta (Pappardelle to be exact)
along with a Bolognese sauce & pecorino romano on top! Delicioso!
ProStart- 11-12th Grade (Pre-Req: Pass Culinary Nutrition)
ProStart is off to a great start this year! The students tried out for various
culinary competitions by competing in an omelet competition in class!
Teachers, chef mentors, and ProStart alumni came to judge the omelets as well
as the students technical skills during the lab! The omelet pictured above was
one of our winning omelets made by Christian Orozco who will be on the
ProStart culinary team this year! ProStart competes at Johnson & Wales
University in March against 30 other programs in Colorado for a chance at
$120,000 worth of scholarships! Last year, Grandview received 3rd place in
Management and 4th place in culinary. The year before, Grandview placed 1st in
Management and 4th in culinary. We are hoping to place in the top two this year
in BOTH the culinary and management competition! Wish us luck!

On Wednesday, November 11, 2015, Grandview High School recognized our
men and women who have served or are currently serving our nation. We
sold Grandview Veterans’ Day t-shirts and all of the proceeds from were
donated to Honor Flight Network. Honor Flight Network is a non-profit
organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices.
They transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their
memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II
survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. We also
accepted donations for goodie bags for the Veterans Hospital. We delivered
these bags on Veterans’ Day to all veterans in the hospital.
These are the students who went to the VA hospital and handed out over 100
goodie bags to our Veterans. Thank you, Danielle Feck, Suzi Kwon, Jasmine
Jeon, Alex Lee, Mariah Bengton, Rami Imam, Jireh Pulley, Garrett Gipson
and of course Dean Adams. The students were
amazing and all of the Veterans and staff were
so impressed with how they engaged and there
were a few tears rolling both from Veterans and
our group. Please feel free to ask the students
about their experience when you see them.

The art department is participating in STEAM-a-Palooza in
November and is creating an installation from recycled
plastic. Could we do a “call out” to our community for plastic
bottles? We need 2 liter and water bottles and laundry
detergent bottles and CAPS of all colors and sizes! Please
send them in for the art department.
On November 9, 2015, the math club had the opportunity to view the traveling
math exhibit from the NY Math Museum. The exhibit was in CO because of
the generous support of Oppenheimer Funds. We had a great time interacting with the hands on math displays.
Grandview parents, teachers, and administrators solidify the
Partnerships for Academically Successful Students (PASS)
initiatives. The three strong beams of support need your help.
Attendance at our next meeting should be mandatory if we are to propel our
students into the next generational occurrence.
Your inputs no matter how great or small may be the missing ingredient
needed to formulate our combined success. Take part in your child’s future
by becoming an active member in the Grandview PASS team. We cannot
maximize our determined efforts without your guidance and mentorship.
Find the time to ensure Grandview kids win in competitive placements in
local, state, and federal ranks. Knowing how to negotiate winning strategies
will make our school stronger in the long term and lean in the short term. Find
our information routinely placed in the Grandview school calendar and
become the strong link in our chain. Bonded by success is the Grandview
PASS way.

Successful Students) is comprised of parents, Cherry Creek
teachers
and administrators, and community members. Committee members work
together to promote the success of all students. The goal is to engage in
meaningful and effective partnerships with our African American and
Latino families by strengthening relationships between the district, school
and parent communities. Additionally, the committee works together
to identify community resources that can be used to promote the academic
success of students of color, while learning to make community
partnerships and parent/teacher relationships intentional elements of
district/school transformation efforts. The District P.A.S.S. Committee
welcomes new members.

The Instructional Support Facility (ISF) is located at 5416 S. Riviera Way,
Centennial, CO 80015. Meetings at ISF will be held in Conference Room
146, from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. ISF-Room 102 will be reserved for the Kid
Zone/ Child Care.
Grandview parents, teachers, and administrators are always
looking to solidify the Partnerships for Academically Successful
Students (PASS) initiatives. Parents have the opportunity to
support these initiatives by attending monthly PASS meetings
at Grandview. Your input may be the missing ingredient needed to eradicate
the predictability of student achievement by race. Take part in your child’s
future by becoming an active member in the Grandview PASS team.
Grandview’s PASS team collaborates with Grandview’s Accountability team
(GAIT). During these monthly meetings, parents discuss topics including
school assessment data, core curriculum, current student interventions, and
school systems. Input from our parent community during these meetings
helps to provide Grandview staff a different perspective while formulating a
plan moving forward.
Please join us for combined GAIT/PASS meetings during the 2015-2016
school year. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 10, at 6:00 pm in the
Main Office Conference Room. Future

How to Avoid Double Dosing on Medicines this Season
Cold and flu season has returned like clockwork. As you hit the over-the-counter aisle and
prepare to combat runny noses and sore throats, remember to double check medicine labels so
you don't accidentally double up on medicines containing acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is a
common drug ingredient-more than 50 million Americans use it weekly to treat pain, fever, and
cold and flu symptoms. It's safe and effective when used as directed, but taking more than

The Project UNIFY officers are pleased to announce they raised over $2,000.00 for Special
Olympics Colorado. On October 14 they represented Grandview at the Hall of Fame breakfast in
the Grand Hyatt Denver where people came together to raise money for Special Olympics
athletes. SOCO (Special Olympics CO) impacts the lives of over 18,900 Coloradans with
intellectual disabilities from 2 to 70+ years. We are proud to give back to SOCO who supports
Grandview in their UNIFIED efforts from UNIFIED Sports to Project UNIFY Club. In the past 5
years Project UNIFY officers and leaders representing Grandview have raised thousands of
dollars to help with this wonderful program.

Congratulations to Grandview’s Mock
Trial Team who participated in DU’s
Providence Cup, a mock court case that
retried the killing of Trayvon Martin by
George Zimmerman. As a new team, we
were decidedly against stiff competition,
most of whom were familiar with the
process. With only 4 weeks of
preparation our students, new to any
kind of legal proceeding, learned legal
terminology,
opening
statements,
presentation of evidence, objections,
and closing arguments.
Without
question a
daunting
task!
These
students faced their mission
with
maturity, dedication,
and enthusiasm. We are
looking forward to our next trial!
