Ruth Moody
THE GARDEN
RHR-CD-230 • Release Date: July 13, 2010
Stunning solo CD from member of The Wailin’ Jennys!
Red House Records is pleased to announce the July 13, 2010
Canadian release of The Garden, the first full-length solo album from
Ruth Moody. A founding member of the Billboard-charting folk supergroup The Wailin’ Jennys, she has
long been recognized for her captivating voice, superb musicianship and impressive songwriting. Ruth displays
all this and more on this stunning, highly anticipated release.
The first seeds of The Garden were sewn in the southern Manitoba summer, where Ruth and producer David
Travers-Smith recorded demos and discussed the treatment of the songs. The bed-tracks were recorded in the
fall in Toronto, and the songs took root in the winter with further recording in Toronto and Winnipeg. Now, in
the heart of summer once again, The Garden has come to full fruition.
“Gardens, like the seasons, are symbols of life and its cycles.” Ruth says. “They have always been magical
places for me--where the tiniest seeds are planted and grow into beautiful expressions of life.”
It is only fitting, then, that after 13 years as a touring musician, Ruth finds herself tending her own garden,
bringing her own beautiful songs to life. Appropriately, the album opens with “The Garden”, which refers to an
awakening, according to Ruth. “It was inspired by a theme from Voltaire’s Candide - the idea that we must work
on our garden and make our little corner of the world beautiful, in whatever way we can.” Performed on the
banjo and layered with lush strings and harmonies, this is the perfect
introduction to Ruth’s rich and vibrant collection of songs.
Stretching beyond traditional acoustic sounds, the record uses organ,
horns and pedal steel to create radio-friendly pop tunes like “Travellin’
Shoes” and “Closer Now,” in addition to more spare tracks like the
traditionally-inspired “Nest,” the sensual “Cold Outside,” and the
poignant “Never Said Goodbye.” An unexpected treat is the sweet and
catchy duet “We Can Only Listen,” co-written with Matt Peters of The
Waking Eyes. In addition to Peters, Ruth is joined by an all-star musical
cast that includes neo-bluegrass band Crooked Still, Kevin Breit
(Norah Jones, k.d. lang), Luke Doucet, Oh Susanna, and a guest
appearance by The Wailin' Jennys. Sure to be a hit with folk and
Americana lovers and music fans of all kinds, Ruth’s verdant garden of
songs is a breath of fresh air.
Ruth showcased at the South By Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival
and will tour throughout 2010 and 2011, with several solo Canadian
dates scheduled for the fall. For her full tour schedule, visit her website at

BIOGRAPHY
Ruth Moody is a Juno Award winning songwriter
from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Founding member of the
internationally renowned, Billboard-charting trio The
Wailin' Jennys and former lead singer of the Canadian
roots band Scruj MacDuhk (the band that would later
become The Duhks), she has performed in sold-out
venues around the world, made numerous criticallyacclaimed albums, and has appeared more than a dozen
times on the national radio show A Prairie Home
Companion.
Although best known for her work with The Wailin’
Jennys, Ruth is an artist of exceptional depth and grace
in her own right. Critics have lauded her ethereal
vocals, impressive multi-instrumentalism (she plays
guitar, banjo, accordion, piano, and bodhrán), and her
talent as a songwriter. Writing with a maturity and
wisdom that belies her age, her songs are timeless,
universal, and exceptionally well-crafted, all sung with
an intimacy and honesty that is unmistakably hers.
Ruth was a finalist in the USA Songwriting
Competition and was recognized by the
International Songwriting Competition for her song
“One Voice,” which has gone on to be a signature song
for The Wailin’ Jennys. It has been covered by
countless artists and has been performed in concert
halls, churches and schools throughout the world.
Now Ruth releases her highly-anticipated solo album
The Garden. Although she released a solo EP in 2002 called Blue Muse, it is Ruth’s first full-length recording.
Coming out on Red House Records on July 13, 2010, the album was produced by Juno nominee David
Travers-Smith and features an all-star cast including neo-bluegrass band Crooked Still, Kevin Breit (Norah
Jones, k.d. lang), Luke Doucet, and a guest appearance by The Wailin' Jennys.
Ruth showcased at the South By Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival and will tour throughout 2010 and 2011,
playing solo and with The Wailin’ Jennys. For her full tour schedule, visit her website at www.ruthmoody.com.
