One of the best-preserved city centres in the world – the Old Town of Graz.
Unesco World Cultural Heritage since 1999.
We have specially labelled the top 12 places of interest in the historic
centre of Graz for you, please see map on page 39.

Why a FLIRTATION with Graz can easily turn
into a long-term relationship.
Only got a couple of days to spare, but still looking to live life to
the full? Then a trip to Graz is just the thing. No other city offers
so much variety packed into such a small space, together with
that touch of sunny southern flair: futuristic architecture alongside medieval houses, alleys and squares; exclusive boutiques
overlooking colourful farmers’ markets, cultural and culinary
treats on every corner – and all within a few paces of each other.
But be warned: a brief flirtation with Graz can easily turn into
a long-term relationship. Once you’ve fallen for the European
Cultural Capital 2003, you’ll want to come back again – and
again. Even if it’s only for another short – but intense – visit.
1. Kunsthaus Graz – the “friendly alien”
designed by Peter Cook and Colin
Fournier, opened in 2003, Graz’s year as
Cultural Capital.
2. Ancient cobbled streets such as
Sporgasse provide both a visual and
gastronomic feast.
3. Specialities from the region – a typical
Styrian farmers’ market, right in the
middle of the Old Town.

BECOME ENGROSSED IN THE CITY.
NOT IN THE MAP.
Enjoy losing yourself in the city without losing your way:
a simple stroll is full of surprises. In the Old Town, a new
discovery awaits around every corner: hidden alleys, romantic
inner courtyards, ornate façades and magnificent buildings.
This “best preserved city centre in Central Europe” is designated a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO, and with
good reason: Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque architecture sit
side-by-side, while just three minutes’ walk away lies the future:
the enigmatic “friendly alien” Kunsthaus has made itself at
home, nestled between the ancient houses. Local people love
the unique beauty of this beast, and already see it as the city’s
second landmark.
1. View over the domes of Graz Cathedral
and the tiled roofs of the Old Town.
2. The perfect island to wash up on: the
Murinsel, designed by Vito Acconci.
3. The magnificent Landhaus courtyard
with its Renaissance arcades.
4. The Mausoleum, last resting place of
Kaiser Ferdinand II.

Graz gastronomy has a special focus on regional produce –
recently winning the city the title of “Austrian Capital of Delight”.
7
GRAZ – AUSTRIA’S CAPITAL
OF CULINARY DELIGHTS.
Graz is now the official “Austrian Capital of Delight”. A title
awarded to reflect the fact that Graz restaurateurs are excellent hosts, that they focus on regional produce and, last but
not least, that Graz has 800(!) city farmers, more than any
other Austrian community, and the highest concentration of
market days in the whole of Europe! Here in Graz it is the
farmers themselves, and not market traders, who sell their
delicious specialities. Particular highlights are the Gourmet
Travel Festival, when the best and most creative chefs in the
world gather in Graz, the gastronomic guided tours (p.25) and
outings to the Regions of Delight (p. 27).

As “Capital of Delight” partners, a number of inns and
restaurants in Graz focus particularly on regional cuisine.
For a list of these partners see page 23.
1. Local produce prepared freshly
and above all with love. Just taste the

2. Bottles don’t stay unopened for long.
The wine is just too delicious.

The view from the Graz Schlossberg over the tiled roofs
of the city is breathtaking.
9
MILLIONS OF FIRST KISSES HAVE HAPPENED HERE.
ALTHOUGH THE VIEW CAN BE QUITE DISTRACTING.
Sooner or later you’ll end up here, on the wooded hill right
in the middle of the Old Town, and you won’t be able to get
enough of the view: looking down from the Graz Schlossberg
onto the brick-red roofs of the city, it’s an indescribable feeling.
New lovers, however, are usually less interested than most –
and this has always been Graz’s favourite spot for romance. It’s
still well worth taking a look around: the clock tower alone is
a fascinating curiosity. The small and big hands are the wrong
way round, causing some visitors to check their watches in confusion. Anecdote has it that when Napoleon wanted to blow up
the clock tower, the people of Graz simply bought it back from
him … Their vision ensured that one of the finest views in Graz
remains today – not to mention the wide range of gastronomy
to be found up here.

Performing Arts. Just one of many examples of exciting architecture in Graz.

DON’T GO LOOKING FOR CULTURE.
IT WILL FIND YOU.
You’ve just emerged from looking at ancient knights’ armour
in the Zeughaus, and now suddenly you’ve come across a
kind of spaceship, a couple of hundred metres up the street.
Don’t panic: the “friendly alien” Kunsthaus is not a UFO; it’s
Graz’s international modern art gallery. Graz holds a stunning
variety of museums, galleries, exhibitions, architecture and
design. Even the main railway station has become part of the
cultural landscape here: vivid colours and bold textures create a
fascinating space of illusion. It was this diversity and visionary
impulse that were crucial factors in making Graz the Cultural
Capital of Europe in 2003.
1. The Graz Armoury houses the world’s
largest historically evolved collection of

2. Transformed from a place of transit

THE LATEST FASHION TREND?
SHOPPING IN THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF GRAZ!
Somewhere in the depths of your shopping bag, a new designer
handbag nestles up to a bottle of pumpkin-seed oil. Wherever
else would you find such a huge range of great buys? Seasoned
Graz shoppers wryly call it “shopping with culture”: exclusive
designer labels in the boutiques around Herrengasse, antiques
on the “Art Mile” in Sackstrasse, or the cool, wacky stores run
by the young creative set down Mariahilferstrasse – all year
round Graz is an attraction for creative and arty people of all
kinds. Or enjoy the surprise of spontaneously tasting samples
at the farmers’ markets, such as a “Stamperl” (glass) of homemade schnaps or a slice of tasty “Schmalzbrot”.
1./2. Graz is famous for shoes, fashion
and top design.
3. Sackstrasse: the antique and art mile
of Graz (and while you’re there, take
a look at the wonderful courtyards of
house numbers 9,11 and 14!).
4. Your invitation to shop: modern
design and beautiful home accessories.

A romantic weekend? Graz offers the perfect
backdrop for unforgettable moments.
15
Superb dining, good music, cool events:
Graz nightlife is lively and easy-going.
It would be such a shame not to try at least a taste of Graz
nightlife. Because at night the city really comes alive – kept
young, lively and optimistic by its 40,000 students at four
universities and two technical colleges. Graz: the city is a
stage, a scene, a backdrop, a programme of events! Whether
at the classics of Graz nightlife, or the young new pubs that
are constantly arriving on the scene in the streets around the
university or on the right bank of the Mur. In the bars and pubs
surrounding the Kunsthaus you’ll get great drinks served with a
slice of artistic flair.
1. Pure romanticism: an evening stroll
on Schlossberg hill.
2. From bar to bar by foot – so much to
choose from, and all just a short step
away.
3. Open-air cultural events, high above
the city: the Kasematten stage.

4. Amongst the magnificent facades
around Hauptplatz square, the
“Luegghaus” stands out particularly
with its stucco facade and arcades.

Discovering Graz by bike can be a lot of fun.
Bicycles can be rented from several central points in the city.
17
GRAZ – A CITY WITH MANY
GREEN HEARTS.
Graz has long been known as the bicycle-friendliest city in
Austria – locals discovered early on that the quickest and
greenest way to get around is on two wheels. So it’s no coincidence that Graz is home to some of the world’s technology
and market leaders in biomass, solar thermal energy, water
technology and waste recycling. Graz is also the highlight of the
360km-long Mur bicycle path from Lungau to Bad Radkersburg.
Nearby lie south and west Styria, Regions of Delight and perfect
destinations for relaxed excursions by bike. Mountain bikers, on
the other hand, will love the fast trails surrounding Graz, which
have become an Eldorado for the sportier side of cycling.
www.mur-radweg.at, www.bikeculture.at
1. Surrounding the world heritage site of Eggenberg Palace,
the park itself is well worth a visit. Be sure to visit the state
rooms inside.
2. Downhill all the way…
3. In the middle of the city? In the Graz
Stadtpark you are surrounded by nature.

4. Not too fast – or you’ll miss the
beautiful countryside.
4
18
From the historic city centre to a natural idyll it’s just a few minutes’ drive.
Don’t miss the beautiful surroundings of Graz – they’re more than worth a visit.
19
AND THERE’S MORE …
UNMISSABLE SIGHTS AROUND GRAZ.
… and you thought you’d already seen all there was to see?
Then just take a look at what there is right on Graz’s doorstep:
for example the nearby Bärenschutzklamm, a spectacular rocky
ravine with 24 thundering waterfalls. It once provided shelter to
bears: nowadays it is photographers who gather here. Close by,
the Lurgrotte caves at Peggau are a natural spectacle in a class
of their own: special lighting effects make the huge stalactites
and stalagmites appear even stranger. And if you thought
culture was only to be found in town, you should take a look
at Stübing’s Austrian Open Air Museum and its 90 lovingly
restored historic farmhouses. Or else the Jakobuskirche in Thal,
an exquisite church designed by painter Prof. Ernst Fuchs. You
can even pay a visit to the oldest Cistercian monastery in the
world, Stift Rein, whose doors are open to the public.

area surrounding Graz is full of

THE VERY SAME WINE YOU’VE
JUST TASTED IN GRAZ ...
Just half an hour’s drive away lie the rolling hills of the south
Styrian wine-growing region, home to world-class vintages
and rich in tradition. Enjoy both in one of the many “Buschenschänke” to be found here, rustic taverns producing their own
wines and food – such as the typical “Brettljause”, a wooden
platter of assorted hams, pâtés and salami. If you find yourself
in west Styria then you should definitely try a glass of “schilcher”, the famous dry rosé produced only in this area, and much
1
loved by connoisseurs. Another famous regional product of
quite a different kind are the Lipizzaner horses of the Vienna
Court Riding School, which are reared in Styria and return here
to rest at the end of their careers. The ancient castles of the
region, on the other hand, are not the place for peace and quiet.
Schloss Herberstein is home to a wildlife park, while above the
towering fortress at Riegersburg falcons circle: tame, but no
less impressive for it.
1. Wine routes meander through the
landscape south of Graz – each one
more romantic than the last.
2. The invading Turks never managed
to capture the majestic fortress of
Riegersburg. Nowadays it’s nearly
always overrun – by hundreds of
visitors.
3. Irresistible temptations await you in
the Styrian wine-growing region.
4. The Lipizzaner stud farm at Piber:
kindergarten to the world-famous
horses of the Spanish Court Riding
School of Vienna.

the romantic inner courtyards of the
region’s castles.

200 YEARS OF UNIVERSALMUSEUM JOANNEUM
In 2011, the Universalmuseum Joanneum celebrates its bicentenary. To mark this event, Austria’s oldest public museum will be
presented anew as one of the most modern universal museums in Europe in the 21st century.
In a multi-facetted bicentenary programme, wide-ranging content will be creatively interlinked and presented in a variety of exhibition
and event formats.
The programme of events throughout the bicentenary year will be highly attractive for visitors. It will illustrate those relationships
between 11 locations which have developed through history and may be expected to appeal both to a broad public and to experts.
Starting in February 2011 and changing on a monthly basis, thematic exhibitions will be presented, forming the “backbone” of a
complex dramaturgy of the years. Complementing this, various special events will go more deeply into important areas and offer

Hotel Wiesler
Member of WorldHotels
The new Wiesler proves it: a hotel isn’t just a
hotel. Here you can expect more than just a
bed: breakfast in the art nouveau “Frühling”
[Spring] salon, grill & soul in the dining room,
a real barber in the Wiesler Depot and, right
next door, “Senf und Söhne” [Mustard &
Co.] – an old-fashioned Austrian canteen. For
relaxation there’s the new wellness oasis. And
all this in the middle of town. Altogether a
different kind of hotel, for guests who don’t
necessarily prefer things standard.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES.
Modern art meets Old Masters: in Graz, it’s usually only a few paces to go between performances, contemporary fine art
or Medieval painting. Connoisseurs and artlovers will enjoy the wide variety of museums, exhibitions and collections –
from the unique Graz Armoury, the renowned Universalmuseum Joanneum, Kunsthaus Graz, the well-known children’s
museum Frida & Fred, through to collections assembled lovingly over many decades. The public and private galleries of
Graz provide a lively platform for contemporary art.
