Bezant Under Glass
Greetings unto the Populace of our Grand
Barony of Roaring Wastes.
I, Bella Roisin OCoilleain, send greetings of
good Cheer and Health to you all. As Minister
of Arts and Sciences of Roaring Wastes, I am
sending this missive.
The Barony has had a long and strong Arts
and Sciences tradition. We have, through the
years, promoted the Arts and Sciences by
incorporating Project Nights into our Baronial
Calendar. In fact, there are seven nights each
month that have Project Nights.
Those who open their homes on these evenings
do so out of the kindness of their hearts on a
Volunteer basis. They give their personal time,
so people will have a place and opportunity
to work on their Projects, or seek help on
those Projects. We have been given a great
opportunity to utilize these nights as a way
to finish projects, work on them, and seek
help from various levels of expertise in many
different areas of Arts and Crafts.
I also would like to know what kinds of things
people would like to Learn for these evenings.
We have many teachers and experts in our own
Barony, who are waiting to teach their various
skills and expertise to new people. Do not forget
that if you do not ask, we cannot help with
Teaching new Crafts. So, if there is something
that you would like to Learn, please do not
hesitate to ask. Request a class, of any of our
Project Night Host and Hostesses, and we will
do our best to find someone who will teach it.
I will be distributing a survey for these Nights
to find out what people would like to have for
Classes.
Our beloved Baron and Baroness, Vlachus
and Una, have their gaming night on the 2nd
Wednesday of the month.
Sargent A’kos and I have the 3rd Wednesday of
the month for Project Nights.
Lady Beline and Lord Urbain have the 4th
Wednesday of the month.
Lady Isabella and Forester Eamon have a
Project and Music Night on the last Monday of
the month.
And, last but not least, there is armouring on
the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at
Their Graces Brannos and Rebekah’s.
We take pride in the fact that there is so much
to do in our Grand Barony on any given week.
The Society of Creative Anachronism is an
ACTIVE organization of Living History.
Our Barony has a long standing tradition of
generosity in this regard: sharing, teaching and
organizing various classes for learning new skill
sets has had its precedence set early on in our
History. I therefore challenge you, Wonderful
Populace, to return to our Roots of Arts and
Sciences evenings: bring your own projects to
work on.
And, one more thing: Kindness and
consideration goes a long ways. And, while it
seems to be a simple thing, remember to say
Thank You to your Host and Hostess when you
leave. Again, they do this on a Volunteer basis.

You finally make it to your first event, whether it’s a simple practice, a demo, a smaller local event
or a larger kingdom level event. Now what should you do? If you’re like most people you step back and watch
everyone else to get a feel for the way it is ran and what seems to be the flow of the event. In the course of the
day, you will make some acquaintances, some new friends and that group of people that won’t acknowledge
you. You have a decent time and decide to go to a few more events where you have a bit more fun as you now
know a few more people.
The next step in your mind is to start looking into everything you can about this interesting world.
But where to start? You know you want to come up with a name, a time frame and eventually some garb of
your own. Yet, for all the research you have done you’re still lost. So you try to ask help of these new found
friends while trying not to be a pain about it all. After much frustration you settle on time frame, a region
and at last a name. At this point, you have been attending whatever you could for the past several months
and now you wonder what else is there to do in the society?
That is a good question. While there are all kind of arts & sciences activities, you do not know what
all the options are or where to start. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an easier way to find out some of this
information? If there were those helpful souls to give you a guiding hand? Maybe from some of the people
that have been active for a long time? That would indeed be a nice thing since at this point, you still don’t
know who everyone is and what questions to ask to find out the information that you are after. All you know
is that you wish to try more of the activities that are offered.
It might be nice; it might be helpful if that group of long time members take a minute to remember
what it was like to be new to the society. To not know who everyone is, especially the members of Royalty. If
the older members took the time to help and guide the newcomers, instead of sitting back and waiting for the
newcomers to prove their worth, then the group and the society would have a better chance at being able to
keep growing.
