Goochland Free Clinic and
Family Services is being honored
for increasing the amount and level
of care that it provides.
On June 28, the Virginia Health
Care Foundation will honor the
local agency with its annual Alumni
Award.
“The Alumni Award is for an
organization that they’ve given
a grant to in the past and has
shown sustainability and success
in the years following,” said Sally
K. Graham, executive director of
Goochland Free Clinic and Family
Services.
GFCFS will receive a $10,000
prize from Wells Fargo for winning
the award, Graham said.
The award is competitive and
GFCFS was the only free clinic in
the state to receive it, Graham said.
The money will be used for health
care, she added.
The Virginia Health Care
Foundation makes grants to “safety-net providers,” such as federallyqualified health centers and free
clinics, Graham said. The organization also sponsors educational and
leadership programs for safety-net
providers, Graham added.
“And so they are really all about

supporting our work and we’re
really happy, grateful, that they’re
there,” Graham said.
GFCFS has made great strides
in the number of Goochland residents that it serves and the level of
health care it has provided since
it opened in September 2000.
Numbers that Graham included
in the nomination form for the
VHCF Alumni Award show that
from 2001 to 2011, medical visits
increased from 283 to 5,537, dental
visits from 258 to 1,911 and mental
health visits from zero to 445.
“Our mission is to provide quality health care and human services
to Goochland residents in need of
assistance,” Graham said, “and we
define that as people who live in
Goochland who live under the 200
percent [federal] poverty level.”
“We see about 1,000 individuals
a year,” Graham added. “Last year
we did a little over 7,000 health
care visits.”
GFCFS has grown from one
part-time employee in 2000 to 32
mostly part-time staff members this
year, with six full-time employees
on the health services side, including herself, Graham said, adding
that she is a nurse practitioner.
The agency has expanded its

Judge Timothy K. Sanner
deferred rendering a verdict
on the assault charge against
Goochland School’s Director of
Transportation Betty Thurston
last Friday.
In a new bench trial in
Goochland Circuit Court after
Thurston appealed her conviction on assault charges in
Goochland District Court last
December, Judge Sanner said
the evidence was sufficient to
find Thurston guilty of assault
and battery but deferred disposition of the matter until June
25, 2013.
During that interval
Thurston must perform 20

hours from one night a week
to five days a week and one
evening. Last year, GFCFS
received $1.75 million worth of
free medicine donated by drug
companies, Graham said.
The Alumni Award is a testament to the efforts of paid
staff and volunteers, Graham
said.
“We’re thrilled, because
it really is a reflection of the
amount of work that the
staff and volunteers have put
in,” Graham said. “You can’t
increase those numbers like
[that] unless people are really
working hard and are really
committed to the mission and
they were really, really committed to the mission.”
There has not been a significant increase in the amount
of paid staff over the past four
to five years, but Graham said
the staff has worked harder and
the number of volunteers has
grown.
“I think it’s [the Alumni
Award] a wonderful public
and complete an anger management class. She is required
to register with the Offender
Aid and Restoration office in
Charlottesville within 14 days.
She was also required to pay
court costs.
If she fulfills all the requirements of the court Sanner said
the charges would be dismissed at
the June 25, 2013 hearing date.
Special Prosecutor Jeffrey
W. Haislip of Fluvanna County
called witnesses who described
an altercation in the transportation office between Thurston and
bus driver Tonya Gilman over
a fire evacuation drill Gilman
was to run last October 13 at
Goochland High School.
Gilman returned to the
Transportation Office after dropping off her students. Gilman said
acknowledgement of the success,” Graham said.
GFCFS stands out, Graham
said, because it offers health
care and other human services.
“We are unique among free
clinics,” she said, “because we
do have these comprehensive
services. Most free clinics, I’d
say 90 percent of free clinics, are
really focused on health care
and because we had this opportunity for this merger [in 2007
with Goochland Fellowship
and Family Services], I like to
say we redefined health to really
encompass the whole spectrum
of human need.”
“You can’t be healthy if you
don’t have enough to eat and
you can’t be healthy if your
house is cold because you can’t
pay your utilities,” Graham
added. “You know, all of that’s
health.”
Mary Fletcher, 53, said she
doesn’t know what she would
have done without GFCFS.
In addition to complications from two gastric-bypass
procedures, Fletcher said she
also suffered a broken hip
that required surgery and
Thurston criticized her over the
radio for doing the drill on the
wrong day, ridiculing her in front
of the other drivers, who could
hear the radio transmissions.
On her return to the office
Gilman said Thurston called
her stupid and followed her
into the copy room.
Clerk Sonia Talman testified that Thurston grabbed
Gilman’s arm, who then tried
to pull away three times while
the two were in the copy room
at the small transportation
office.
Gilman said she had a long
scratch on her arm. Haislip
introduced photographs into
evidence that were identified
by Goochland Sheriff’s Deputy
Christopher Skaggs as photos
he took after being called to
the office.
Defense attorney John
Amos called Thurston to the
stand, who testified she touched
Gilman on the arm.
“I didn’t reach out to harm
her but to calm her,” said
Thurston. “She flailed her arm
away.”
Thurston apologized for
using the word stupid.
Thurston has worked for
the school system for 31 years.
She said she supervises 65
drivers along with five other
full-time employees. She is in
charge of bus routes and monitoring weather conditions and
advising the superintendent on
school closings.
Gilman continues to work
as a bus driver for the school
system.

four months of rehabilitation.
When the economy took a turn
for the worse, Fletcher said her
husband lost his construction
job and she eventually lost her
insurance.
At that point, Fletcher said
she was referred to GFCFS.
“They saved me,” Fletcher
said. “And when everything’s
gone, you don’t know which
way to turn fast enough.”
It’s no surprise to Fletcher
that GFCFS is receiving the
Alumni Award.
“They deserve everything
they get,” Fletcher said. “That’s
the reason I speak. I do whatever I can to pay back this community, one hundred percent.”

Amateur Radio Field Day is this weekend
By Ken Odor
jodor@goochlandgazette.com
“It’s a hobby and a public
service,” said Ray Clemons, one
of a group of amateur radio
operators who met last Friday
at Company 5 to talk about
the Goochland Amateur Radio
Field Day.
The radio operators will set
up shop there this Saturday to
practice providing emergency
radio communications to
assist Goochland in times of
emergency, storms, power failures and any time the county
requests their service.
They have the ability to
provide world wide communications, said Ned Creasey,
Goochland Board of Supervisors
Chairman and himself an amateur radio operator.
The group is led by Ralph
R. Fetty Sr., Emergency
Coordinator.
“We are an emergency
backup system in Goochland
County,” said Fetty. “When
everything else fails, ham radio
is there,” he said.
The event is also a contest of
sorts, to see how many contacts

side with Goochland County
Administrator
Rebecca
Dickson, getting a handson look of how the office is
operated and observing and
working with other county
departments.
Gilchrist and Holman
began their internships May
22 and will continue until
August 3, said Holman. They
work about 15 hours a week,
he said.
Dickson said the goal of
the internship program is to
“get people to understand
what we do.”
Another goal of the program is to increase diversity
the group can make.
The purpose is to make as
many contacts with stations
throughout the country and
overseas or Navy ships on as
many amateur radio bands and
frequencies as they can.
The operators use only
emergency electrical power
sources, generators, solar, batteries and other sources.
They get additional points
for the number of citizens that
stop by and sign in and higher points for county officials
including supervisors, county
staff, constitutional officials,
school board, school staff and
law enforcement officials who
visit.
Fetty has all he needs in an
orange case he calls his “ready
kit.” With battery power, a radio
and an antenna, he can set up
anywhere.
Amateur radio has changed
a lot over the years, the group
said. Morse code proficiency is
no longer required, although
many of the older operators
know it.
Fetty said there are more
amateurs now in the United
States than ever before, partly
in the workforce, she said.
“We believer our workforce
should be reflective of the
community that we serve,”
said Dickson in her introduction of the two men on
June 5.
Holman said Monday that
his experiences to date have
been “an eye-opener.” He
said the duties of the county
administrator are more than
he realized as an observer
from the outside.
“You have to deal with the
whole county, balancing your
time. It’s a huge responsibility.”
As anticipated, much of
the two young men’s time has
been involved with becoming
familiar with the functions of

because of the elimination of
the Morse requirement.
Fire/EMS Chief Bill MacKay
encouraged the effort.
“As most of you know the
“Ham” radio operators are often
the only viable form of communication during the early
stages of a significant emergency. When local media, cell
phones, and even 1st responder
communications are impaired
or completely knocked out, it
is the amateur radio operators
who keep communications
the various county departments, said Holman Monday.
As the internship comes
to an end, Holman, with
the help of feedback from
Gilchrist, will be responsible
for preparing a report laying the groundwork for the
future of the diversity internship program.
“By the end of their internship they will be presenting
to the board the proposed
overall program for diversity interns going forward,”
explained Dickson.
Senior
Management
and Projects Analyst Paul
Drumwright was instrumental in putting the program
together, said Dickson.
intact and get the message
to the outside world,” wrote
MacKay in a department bulletin.
The event takes place this
Saturday at Company 5, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing
round-the-clock until 11 a.m.

Work proceeding on Benedictine
at River Road Abbey site
By Ken Odor
jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Benedictine College Preparatory
School Headmaster Jesse Grapes invited
newly appointed academic dean Del.
Lee Ware and Goochland 5th District
Supervisor Ken Peterson out to the Abbey
site on River Road for a tour last week.
“We can serve our students better in
this facility than we can downtown,” said
Grapes. “Fifty acres is a lot better than
two acres.”
Grapes said two of the three plans of
development have been provided to the
county and said the last and most important plan, which includes the entrance
and road improvements, would be submitted shortly.
“That is really the key piece,” said
Grapes.
Peterson asked if work was being done
before approval by the county and Grapes
said no.
“We’re just trying to be as ready as we
can be,” he said.
The only noticeable work in progress
last Thursday was two workers engaged
in installing large windows on one side of
the dining hall., which Grapes said will be
able to serve 400 people, calling it a “huge
upgrade for us.”

Fall slate set
It was a quiet election day last week in the state, as Virginians voted in
the Republican Primary.
Turnout was low, and results were pretty much as expected. U.S.
Rep. Eric Cantor, R-7, trounced challenger Floyd Bane and will now face
Democrat Wayne Powell in November.
Former U. S. Senator and Virginia governor George Allen also prevailed
convincingly, besting three other GOP hopefuls in the senatorial primary.
Tea Party activist Jaime Radtke was Allen’s only significant challenger, winning a little over 23 percent of the ballots cast to Allen’s 63 percent. Turnout
in the Senate primary was about 10 percent. Allen will now face Democrat
Tim Kaine, also a former Virginia governor, this fall.
Noteworthy once again was the higher participation rate of
Goochland voters, particularly in the Senate primary, where about 13
percent voted compared to 5 percent statewide.
Same thing in the congressional race, Goochland turning out at a
13 percent rate versus 10 percent district wide. By the way, the Seventh
District race had the highest turnout of the four GOP congressional
primaries.
For professional tea leaf readers, what does it all mean?
Goochland Republican Committee Chairman Ben Slone noted the
obvious. “The main thing is that Goochland votes,” he said Monday. He
also noted that Radtke performed much better in Goochland, where
she took 14 percent more votes than she did statewide against Allen.
“I think she did very well for not having the money and the name
recognition,” said Slone.
Now political junkies will have to swelter through the dog days of
summer before the political rhetoric heats up after Labor Day.
Virginia is seen as a swing state by most political analysts, President
Obama having carried it in 2008, the first Democrat to do so since
Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
Not going to happen this time, says Slone, who without hesitation
predicts Romney, Allen and Cantor victories in November.
That’s a pretty safe bet in Goochland, where McCain bested Obama
by a 60 to 38 percent margin in 2008.
But statewide it could be another matter. Democrats likely have a
different outcome in mind.
For those of you who can’t wait for November, or maybe feel
Goochland will be competitive for Democrats, how about letting us
know what you think the fall will bring?

Students pitch in at
Envoy at the Meadows
On Saturday June 16th, over 50
children from The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints located
in Short Pump descended upon the
grounds of skilled nursing facility Envoy at the Meadows located
off Dogtown Road in Goochland
County.
A group of students from the
church had reached out to us to
volunteer their time in our building by helping out with various
activities. Our facility had never
seen such enthusiastic readiness to
spend time with our residents and
help out around the facility wherever
they could.
The students took part in such
tasks as washing windows, painting
furniture, providing manicures to the
residents, playing the piano, building
bird houses, cleaning the kitchen, and
other activities throughout the facility.
No task was too great or too small for
the students and they willingly tackled
every activity that they were given.
During the several hours that they
spent in our facility, the joy and happiness of our residents was written
all over their faces and it was obvious
how grateful they were to have such
a wonderful group of children spend
time with them.
The staff at Envoy at the Meadows
would like to extend a big ‘thank you’
to all of the volunteers that gave up
their time to make our residents’
day a bit brighter!

Bryan Trophy focus for Deep Run Horse Show riders
Event runs June 20-24 at
Deep Run Hunt Club
By Dave Lawrence
Special Correspondent
A horse country tradition
– the Deep Run Horse Show
– returns to the Deep Run
Hunt Club in Manakin Sabot
this week. The show, featuring
a host of equestrian events and
local riders, begins Wednesday
and ends Sunday.
Visitors may be overwhelmed with what to focus
on: with horses and riders
competing in more than 150
events over the five days of the
show, there is a lot to see. But
for the participants, most of
the focus will be on the Bryan
Trophy competition, which has
achieved legendary status since
it began in 1962.
“It’s an equitation class for
junior riders,” said 16-year-old
Margaret Luck of Maidens, Va.,
who hopes to become the 51st
name on the list of winners.
“I know that it attracts a lot
of junior riders to compete in.
The tradition keeps a lot of
local people coming, and the
size of the show gets a lot of
people from the East Coast to
compete.”
Unlike most of the other
classes, which are judged on
the horse’s ability to complete
the jumping course, Luck said
the Bryan Trophy competition
presents more difficult jumps
and – while the horse’s perfor-
mance is important – is judged
on how the rider presents herself.
“Judging is based on how
smoothly you can make the
course look, how easy you ride
it, how you present yourself to
the judge, how you complete
your jumping course cleanly,”
Luck said. “You have to get
through the whole course without stopping or pulling rails.”
Ada Cosby, a trainer whose
daughter Annie won the Bryan
Trophy in 2009, described
what the riders and horses go
through.
“First they compete over
fences,” Ada Cosby said. “Then
they bring the riders back to
compete on the flat, which is
showing their skill without the
jump. After that, they usually
pick six of the riders to come
back for further testing where
they do a shorter, more difficult jumping course.”
The jumping course consists of a minimum of six fences no more than 3 feet, 6 inches
high and 4 feet wide. The rider
must navigate the course in
an efficient and elegant manner. On the flat course, the
rider guides the horse through
a series of walks, trots and
canters and may be required
to demonstrate other aspects
of horsemanship. Both components are scored on a 100point scale.
“My daughter felt very
privileged to be among the
riders who have won it,” Ada
Cosby said. “As you go back in
history, some of the best riders
in our industry were Bryan
Trophy winners.”
Annie Cosby, a sophomore
at Elon University, said what it
felt like to win the trophy.
“The Deep Run Horse
Show is local for us, so it was a
big deal to go watch the Bryan
Trophy,” Annie Cosby said.
“When I got to compete in it,
I didn’t even really dream of
winning or even placing – I
was just doing it for fun. It was
on my last year that I could do
it. When I won, it was kind of
a huge surprise. … We had
just finished the test when they
announced the results. I was
still really nervous, but it was
really exciting.”
She said she was humbled
by being able to claim membership in an elite club.
“That was the biggest thing
about it,” Annie Cosby said.
“Being able to share that I won
the same trophy in the same
class as some people that I had
looked up to growing up.”
The Deep Run Horse Show
is one of three shows designated by the United States
Equestrian Federation as a
USEF Heritage Competition,
the highest honor the federation awards to a show. While
the Bryan Trophy is the highlight, top finishers in all events
benefit from the show’s status
within the industry.
Photo by Jenna L. Teri courtesy of Deep Run Horse Show
The Deep Run Horse Show runs from June 20-24 at the Deep Run Hunt Club in Manakin Sabot.
“This one is a [USEF]
‘AA’ rated show,” Luck said.
“It means you can earn more
points nationally though it.”
If the status and excitement
of the show were not enough,
the hospitality makes it a hit
for participants and fans, Luck
said. Hospitality is something
that event organizers take very
seriously.
“We are very well known
for our hospitality,” said Betsy
Tompkins, “AA” chairman for
the Deep Run Horse Show
Association. In addition to
food and beverages, vendors
on the show grounds will be
offering a variety of arts, crafts
and clothing.
Events begin each day at 8
a.m. Admission is free.
Proceeds from the show will
benefit the Second Chances
program run by the James River
Chapter of the Thoroughbred
Retirement Foundation. The
program, based at the James
River Work Center, rescues
retired racehorses from possible neglect, abuse or slaughter
as well as teaches inmates elite
grooming skills.
Eagle Classic winner will earn spot in Kingsmill LPGA event
Local winner will earn
berth in September’s
Kingsbill Championship
Contributed report
Last week, the Kingsmill
Championship displayed support for the Symetra Tour
– Road to the LPGA, with
the announcement that the
winner of the 2012 Eagle
Classic will gain entry into the
LPGA event. The Kings Mill
Championship – one of five
tournaments added to the 2012
LPGA Tour schedule – will be
played Sept. 6-10 at Kingsmill
Resort in Williamsburg. The
Eagle Classic takes place at
Richmond Country Club, from
Aug. 17-19.
“Providing entry into the
Kingsmill
Championship
enables us to continue to support the local communities
and charities while promoting
the development of women’s
golf,” said Wayne Nooe, the
Kingsmill
Championship
Tournament Director. “We are
pleased to have this opportunity and excited to continue
our legacy of supporting aspiring young golfers.”
The
King smil l
Championship has a longstanding history of supporting young aspiring LPGA
professional golfers. Michelle
Wie and Morgan Pressel, both
two-time LPGA Tour winners and Solheim Cup members, played in the Kingsmill
Championship as teenagers
before becoming members of
the LPGA.
“This will provide an
opportunity for the Eagle
Classic winner to participate
in a popular LPGA tournament while also placing an
emphasis on Symetra Tour
player development,” said
LPGA Tour Commissioner,
Mike Whan. “It is important
for players, media and fans to
understand that the Symetra
Tour is truly the Road to the
LPGA.”
This announcement further amplifies the Symetra
Tour’s mission to prepare its
players for a successful career
on the LPGA Tour. Since the
Symetra Tour began in 1980,
this season marks the first time
the Symetra Tour will award
10 fully exempt LPGA Tour
cards to the top-10 on the season-ending Volvik Race for the
card.

Bobby Lutz offers hoops advice- Fit in
NC State coach, college
hoops is about finding
the right fit
By Charlie Leffler
cleffler@goochlandgazette.com
Nearly every local high
school basketball player dreams
about continuing their career
in college and then going on
to the professional ranks. For
many, such dreams will always
remain no more than dreams
while others actually have a
chance to fulfill that fantasy.
While most players think the
only way to find basketball success is through a major college,
according to North Carolina
State University Associate
Men’s Basketball Coach Bobby
Lutz, the path to such fulfillment is rarely as predictable as
the end goal. For Lutz, above
all else the important thing is
finding the right fit.
Last month, Lutz stopped
in Richmond, as part of a
Wolfpack Caravan tour, to talk
to a large group of alumni that
live in Central Virginia. Lutz,
who just wrapped up his first
season at NC State, was filling
in for men’s head coach basketball coach Mark Gottfreid who
was committed elsewhere.
“I’m excited to do it,” he
said. “We’re just one piece of
the Wolfpack puzzle, but being
the newest piece and being in
basketball, which is pretty high
profile obviously, we want to
be out there as much as we can
just to let the fans see us and get
to know us a little bit. They’d
rather see Mark but he can’t be
everywhere.”
Lutz is familiar with the city,
most recently due to his work
as the head coach for UNC
Charlotte, which made several
trips to town to play Atlantic10 games against the University
of Richmond. “It’s a great basketball city,” Lutz said.
While some may discount
the impact of an assistant coach,
there is no question that Lutz’s
presence at NC State helped
Gottfried complete an amazing single-season turnaround
for the Wolfpack. Lutz scouted
every game last season, which
carried them into the NCAA
Tournament Sweet 16 for the
first time since 2005. The team
also recorded 24 wins, the most
since 1998.
“We really exceeded most
experts and probably most
everyone’s expectations, coming in, inheriting a team that
had never won,” Lutz said.
“None of these guys had won
more than five league games in
any year that they’d played.”
NC State was far from the
first time that Lutz found success on the basketball court.
He has successfully coached
at nearly every level of college
basketball from NAIA to midmajor to the ACC. As such,
Lutz knows the importance of
finding the right fit. Even as a
walk-on, not every player can
fit into high profile programs,
in leagues like the ACC, Big
East, SEC or Big 10.
“We have a tremendous
number of guys that come and
try to walk on and most of
them don’t make it,” Lutz said.
“I always try to be painfully
honest.”
Lutz himself was cut in his
attempt to walk on at North
Carolina Charlotte in 1976.
However, when he took over
as head coach at tiny Pfeiffer
College in 1986, Lutz learned
that the size of the school does
not determine the amount of
future success in basketball.
“I had a guy (Antonio
Harvey) play in the NBA for
five years,” he said. “I had
another kid, Tony Smith, play
18 years; a kid from Suffock
(Va). They retired his jersey
in Spain. He played 18 years
professionally and made a load
of money.”
While in Richmond, NC State Associate Men’s Basketball Coach Bobby Lutz, center, spoke to Wolfpack alumni Bill Cooper, left,
and Dan Houffman, right. Lutz also offered advice for young basketball players who dream of success beyond high school.
To this day, Lutz uses both
players as an example when
talking with high school athletes who have big dreams.
“What I tell them, there’s nothing wrong with going to a
Division II or even a Division
III school, being a part of that
and being on the floor,” he said.
“Whereas, if you come to walkon at State, and be important as
a practice player, you’re never
going to have the opportunity
to have the role that you would
have at a lower level.
“I try to be honest but
also open,” Lutz said. “There’s
nothing wrong with playing at
another level. Find the right
school, the right fit and go with
it.”
For Lutz, players such as
Harvey and Smith found professional success, not by being a
part of major programs but by
finding the right fit in college.
“What happens is, you get
“It’s an inexact science,” player and listen to family and
a young man who’s not quite Lutz said. “It’s really hard to say, based on my faith and my

low D-I or a mid D-I, then he
blossoms and you couple that
with he has the opportunity of
getting playing time.
“He plays as a freshman
even though he’s maybe not
quite ready, but he learns and
gets better,” Lutz said.
Oftentimes such players are
said to have slipped through the
cracks, but Lutz defines them
otherwise. “I don’t know that
they slip through the cracks,”
he said. “I think they just found
the right opportunity and then

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a
9x9 grid, broken down into nine
3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the
numbers 1 through 9 must fill each
row, column and box. Each number
can appear only once in each row,
column and box. You can figure
out the order in which the numbers
will appear by using the numeric
clues already provided in the
boxes. The more numbers you
name, the easier it gets to solve
the puzzle!
