MUSIC AMONG FRIENDS
“Making music is a way of sharing life with good friends”
Just as in other forms of cultural
expression, music is a powerful
tool to communicate and
represent our feelings.
A simple melody is able to revive
our emotions, put a smile on our
faces, and provide us with a calm
place to go to when we’re feeling
down. It is a way to synchronize
with an unlimited number of
people, regardless of language,
race, or social condition. This is
an art of vital importance, not just
because of its beauty and
aesthetic value, but as a vehicle
to express ourselves both
individually and collectively.

BACKGROUND
From the beginning of the Reformed University Music Program in
2007 the ensemble and chamber music groups were formed
following the educational tradition of the Schutmaat family
(missionaries of the Presbyterian Church who arrived in Colombia in
1946) whose main purpose was to introduce the general public to
the world of classical music. This effort resulted in the creation of the
Alvin Schutmaat Music School (E.M.A.S.) within the educational
system of the Presbyterian Church.
Following the example of his parents, our director, James Schutmaat
decided to unite the talent of music professors and advanced
students in order to form the Reformed University Chamber
Orchestra, which through hard work and discipline has become
known on a regional and national level. Within its repertoire are
included works of great composers from diverse historical periods.
From the baroque period are included works by Corelli, Albinoni,
Telemann, Vivaldi and Bach. From the classical period some of the
members of the orchestra have been soloists in concertos by Haydn
(cello), Stamitz (viola), and Mozart (violin). Also among the great
works of the romantic period the group has presented suites and
serenades by composers such as Tchaikovsky (Serenade for Strings),
Grieg (Holberg Suite), Holst (St. Paul´s Suite) Fletcher (Folk Tune and
Fiddle Dance), Warlock (Capriol Suite), Barber (Suite for Strings) and
Rutter (Suite for Strings). The group has also presented works by the
director James Schutmaat (Concerto Grosso.)

MUSICAL IMPACT
Continuing the legacy of the Schutmaat family, the Reformed University Chamber Orchestra
seeks to inspire new generations to listen to, enjoy, and play classical music with their friends.
In this sense, it is important to highlight the importance of a good taste for music and
friendship as the base for a student-teacher cycle. To put it another way, some members of
the group began their studies as members of the Escuela de Música Alvin Schutmaat
(E.M.A.S.), following up with the Reformed University, becoming the teachers of the same
system that formed them as professional musicians. Similarly, this music group has proposed
sharing their art, with as many people as possible, with three strategies.
First, creating an audience through concerts and
tours, traveling to numerous cities over the
country. Then, forming groups that promote
education initiatives, like the Reformed
University Pre-Chamber Orchestra, the
Reformed
University
Chamber
Orchestra, and the recently
formed Conservatorio de
Música Unireformada in
Ocaña. Lastly, there’s the
formation
of
the
Schutmaat
Chamber
Music Festival, focused on
motivating and training
young people.
