TREATS……………..
Ha. Well, most weeks I try to bring some sort of treat to the
meetings. It seems that people enjoy that sort of thing. I
always hear compliments and comments about it. But I cant
take credit for it. I have the greatest wife in the world. It was her idea. I just
stole it and claimed it for my own.
What do treats have to do with car clubs? Well my observation over the past
year is that most of us have the support of a spouse. I must say I get all kinds
of encouragement. She stands in my shadow and makes me look good. It
makes our hobby easier. Without that support things would be a whole lot
less enjoyable. We get a lot done for ourselves (on our cars) and for the club
(charitable events we do). I should thank her more but I take it for granted
sometimes.
Our rod run was a success with the exception of the damage to the Corvette. Please if anyone knows of any person who might be involved bring it to
our attention. Summer is in full swing and as I look at the calendar there are a
ton of things to do. Every week has multiple car related events to go to and
the club tracks them very well. If you cant find something to do its your own
fault.
Take the time to take your “treat maker” and go on a short cruise to one of
the events with her to show her your appreciation. As always thanks for all of
the member support. It has made my job easier.

It seems only natural that we feature the BIG WINNER at the Counts 48th. Annual Rod Run. Ron
Meis is no stranger to the Counts events and has
participated as a “Associate Member” for several
years. He lives in Lead, SD 6 months out of the
year and lives in Arizona in the Winter.
Over the past several years Ron has been having
Kindig-it build some fantastic cars for him. This
1959 Buick Invicta hardtop is the last one that Dave
has finished for Ron. It has won many awards at the
Goodguys events as well as cleaning house at this
years Black Hills Rod Run. It was built to drive

This has been an interesting summer so Ear. Most of the news hasn’t been very good.
First off we lost TWO club members, Active member Merle McCoy, 1940 Ford PU
and ’23 Model T bucket, passed away in May and a former member from back in the
‘60’s, Ed Shell lost his battle with cancer the end of June, Ed has lived just outside
of Hill City since his retirement as a teacher in Watertown, SD. Ed had 3 cars, a
long time owned ‘56 Chevy, a dark green ‘34 Ford Hemi powered hi-boy and a project ‘39 Chevy sedan.
Both will be missed greatly by friends, family and club members. Club condolences to both families!!!
I have been fighting an engine problem on our ‘40 Studebaker
Commander. Hopefully the problem will be diagnosed and fixed
by the time you read this newsletter.
The Rod Run this year was dedicated in memory of Merle
McCoy, who passed away in May after a sudden heart attack or
stroke. Merle had been an active member for 10 years and will
be sadly missed. This years Black Hills Rod Run was held on
July 8th and 9th, 2016 and was fairly well attended, a little down
this year but the bad news was that a participant from Dickinson, ND had his car keyed on one side, a black ‘60 Vette, during
our awards banquet and celebration at our club house. The
word is out that if any one saw anybody suspicious looking at Gene’s car to let a
club member know so we can do something about it. To add to the bad news, some
*#? called in a gun threat against the police that were going to be at the Sunday
Cruiser Car Show so the Downtown Square host committee postponed the Sunday
Show! What next? FLASH!!! The Downtown Cruiser Car Show has been rescheduled for OCTOBER 9th, 2016.
The Counts annual Swap Meet is now history. Check out the story with pictures on
the next to last page of this newsletter.
Next years ROD RUN will be our 49th, on July 7th and 8th and we plan on a shorter
version. Plans are still in the works on that new plan. If you have any suggestions e
-mail the club at studeman40@hotmail.com .
The BIG NEWS is that 2018 will mark our 50th annual Black Hills Rod Run and we
are planning on pulling out all the stops to make this the BIGGEST and LARGEST
Counts Black Hills Rod Run ever. The dates for 2018 are JULY 6, 7 and 8. Put these
dates on your FUTURE list of events that you don’t want to miss!

After a long several months of planning to have several Counts members take up the invitation from the San
Diego Over the Hill Gang members, Guy and Esther Allen, to attend their 43rd. Annual Streak. It appeared
that at least 6 couples were planning the trip but by mid April we were down to 2 couples. Bob and Shirley
Mallow took their motorhome and towed their ‘55 Chevy in Steve Kroger’s enclosed trailer. Jim and Ann
Neuzil spent several months and lots of dollars getting their ‘40 Studebaker ready for the trip. Thanks to club
members help and friend, Bill Brady’s mechanical ability we were off to San Diego on May 3rd.We were fortunate to be able to talk Bill into going with us and doing most of the driving. He also entered the event so we
had 3 entries at the Streak. We even won long distance award. The Gang treated us great and we enjoyed the
event and got to see about 400 different cars and trucks. The trip went well but we didn’t see enough scenery.
Our problems started after we got back! Tune in for the next exciting episode! JN

After registration, this years Black Hills Rod Run began with an ‘On your Own’
POKER RUN in the northern Black Hills. The highlight of this several hour jaunt
through the hills looking for answers to questions that Bob Mallow put on a sheet of paper, was
the stop for a break and GARAGE TOUR at Ron Meis’ wild “Man Cave and collection of cars and
memorabilia in Lead, South Dakota. This stop was worth the whole Poker Run trip as Ron’s collection of cars is rivaled by few! He has down sized the numbers over the past couple of years but
the quality has gone up a lot! It had been a few years since Ann and I were at Ron’s place and it is
still “COOL” on the second trip because it is like a different place again!
The Friday night White Elephant game is always a fun time and it usually lasts a couple of hours
followed by an Ice Cream Social with plenty to go around. The Counts are well known for feeding
their guest well during the Rod Run weekend.
Jim and Ann along with Bob, Steve and Dan made sure that everyone got the opportunity to purchase a souvenir Black Hills Rod Run T shirt or two!
It was time to shut down for the night and get ready for Saturdays famous Black Hills Cruise! Cont.
