Volunteer Newsletter NORTHLANDS LIVE APRIL 2015 Helen Slugoski and Dale Belanger with Tim Reid. Hello Volunteers, We’ve made it through the winter and are now welcoming the summer months, which means warmer weather, K-Days and the Canadian Derby are fast approaching! The spring is shaping up to be a busy season at Northlands. March ushered in two major concert announcements at Rexall Place—Shania Twain’s back-to-back shows in June and Madonna’s two sold out shows in October. The Edmonton EXPO Centre was bustling as we hosted the Mom, Pop & Tots Fair, the 2015 Edmonton Golf Show, Edmonton Boat & Sportsmen Show and the Edmonton Home & Garden Show. At Northlands Park Racetrack and Casino, grounds crew and barns workers have been diligently preparing the track for the thoroughbred season kicking off on May 1. The 2015 editions of the Northlands Farm and Ranch Show and Canadian College Finals Rodeo were a huge success due in part to the tremendous dedication of our volunteers. In fact, 123 of you came out to donate your time to these great events! On April 15, the Arena Strategy Committee will announce the recommendations put forward to the board regarding the future facility and site use of Rexall Place. Please stay tuned for updates as we will be sure to keep you apprised as announcements are made. With summer on its way, the busiest volunteer season at Northlands is about to kick off. With that in mind, we’d like to thank those who are planning on spending part of their summers with the Northlands team. We always look forward to working closely with you to deliver exceptional events and know that we couldn’t do it without you. Thank you again for all of your hard work throughout every season at Northlands. Tim Reid President & CEO, Northlands Laura Gadowsky Chair, Northlands Board of Directors WHAT’S UP IN THE COMMUNITY On March 13, Northlands staff met Will, Northlands’ 2015 Make-A-Wish child. Will was granted his wish to visit Legoland with his family. We look forward to seeing photos on their return! The Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Bust a Move event was held at the Edmonton EXPO Centre on March 21. Northlands is a proud sponsor of this event, which is a six hour fitness extravaganza raising funds for the Cross Cancer Institute. UDODGE took place at Northlands on April 1. UDODGE is a community based initiative designed to connect youth and mentors together to encourage cross peer interaction and community spirit. Each team was composed of four youth, four adults, a member of the Edmonton Police Service and a Northlands representative. Tim Reid with Will and his family. WHAT STAFF ARE SAYING It was an absolute delight getting to know some of our newest volunteers during volunteer orientation on March 10. Each and every volunteer brings a unique element and skill-set to our programs. I have always told our volunteers to take pride in what they do because our events are just as much theirs as ours. The programs would not be successful without the support of our volunteers so a BIG thank you for all that you do. Arthur Lewandowski Event Coordinator Northlands Events RIVERBEND GARDENS Northlands is proud to be participating in CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) by partnering again with Riverbend Gardens.
