Dakota, or What’s a Heaven For? Brenda Marshall Wednesday, April 13, 10am Author Brenda Marshall will be visiting the library to discuss her book Dakota, or What’s a Heaven For? at the May 17 meeting of the Great Reads book club. The This & That book club will also have their meeting at that time to enjoy the author’s visit. Here is the product description from Amazon: “The lives and schemes of frontier politicians, Northern Pacific Railroad executives, bonanza farmers, and homesteaders converge in the story of Frances Houghton Bingham, who marries the son of a Red River Valley bonanza farmer in order to remain near her new husband s sister. Emo- Saturday, April 16, 10am Wednesday, April 27, 10am tionally complex, willful and resourceful, Frances is seduced by the myths of opportunity driving the settlement of Dakota Territory, and dares to dream of a new world in which to realize her unconventional desires. Providing a counterpoint to the dramatic risks taken by Frances is the generous voice of Kirsten Knudson, the daughter of Norwegian homesteaders. As Kirsten grows from a voluble girl to a formidable woman, her observations (equal parts absurdity and insight) reveal the heart of the novel.” Multiple copies will be available at the April meetings of the This & That book club and the Great Reads book club. It is also available as a digital copy through Library2Go. Knitting Today contains patterns and pictures of modern knits. Sweaters, scarves, mittens, go crazy, knit! Living Without, a grief magazine? In My Abandonment by Peter Rock (F Rock), Caroline lives in Forest Park, a nature preserve, with her father. They live off of the land, off of the grid, in a little makeshift house hidden from view by pine tree branches. Caroline doesn't realize how strange her life is. She doesn't go to school, doesn't have friends her own age, and doesn't know how illegally she and her father are living. Until one day, a runner sees Caroline high in the trees and reports it to the police. Within a week, their home is invaded by strange men with strange dogs who are intent upon separating Caroline and her father from each other and from their home in nature. I was mesmerized by Peter Rock's flowing, poetic narrative about Caroline, a haunting girl who "in the midst of a crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude."
