March-April 2015 - Washington Beaufort County Chamber of
Celebrating over 100 years of service
to the people and businesses of the
Beaufort County Area
1904-2015
March-April 2015
Hopefully by this time you have heard of Bright Futures Beaufort County and the partnership the Chamber
has with Beaufort County Schools. The mission of Bright Futures in Beaufort County is to create partnerships
inspiring educational achievement and developing community success to enrich the lives of our children. We
started this program in Beaufort County in October of 2014 thanks to the generosity of PotashCorp-Aurora
and we are in full swing. The staff returned from Joplin, Missouri where we presented at the National Bright
Futures Conference because we are the only model that exists across the USA with the Chamber as the major
partner. We are helping to meet the basic needs of our students in Beaufort County Schools with the support
of the community. We are partnering each school with businesses and faith based organizations. We need
partners and we are asking you to be a part of this great program. In Joplin, MO where the program began
they have over 300 established partnerships between schools and business and faith based organizations. We
have just started forming partnerships but listed below are the ones that have been established. Join us to make
a difference in our future workforce! We need your partnerships now more than ever!
Steps to get Involved:
1. Like our Facebook page Bright Futures Beaufort County and click get notifications to receive immediate
needs of our students
2. Partner with a school– this can look different for everyone. Call Robin to figure out how to get involved.
3. Become a mentor
4. Meet the needs when you see them on Facebook. These are immediate requests and we need help meeting
them.

The Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting
for the new IMFITT, Interactive Multipurpose Fitness &
Interval Training Trail, at Beaufort County Community
College. IMFITT is a one mile loop on BCCC’s campus
that features three exercise stations with ten pieces of outdoor rated equipment. IMFITT is open to the public 7 days
a week from dawn to dusk, with preferred parking near
Building 8. Maps of the trail are available at the large sign
near Building 8. This project was funded by a $150,000
grant from Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust as part of
their Healthy Places NC Initiative.
The Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center recently held a radiation
oncology open house and ribbon cutting to celebrate bringing
advanced technology to our community. The new Varian linear
accelerator is the first of its kind in Eastern NC. This new technology maximizes the effect on cancer cells while minimizing the
effect on surrounding, healthy normal tissues. The technology
allows the staff to provide precise radiation treatment in a fraction
of the time that it took previously. It is just one of the tools they
are using to achieve personalized quality cancer care with the
goal of making cancer a manageable disease and enhancing quality of life for cancer survivors. To find out more call the Marion
L. Shepard Cancer Center at 975-4308.
