A PARENT’S PERSPECTIVE:
Our role in our children’s education begins long before they enter school. When they do
go to school the importance of our input does not decrease. Research indicates that one
of the most important factors in a child’s success is their support from home. This
achievement does not only refer to academic success but to the importance of our
children’s emotional well-being. Our role in our children’s lives is both direct and
indirect. Direct in a sense of giving our children plenty of opportunity to explore and
learn and feel safe within their environment and indirect in playing a supportive role in
following our children’s relationships with teachers and peers. One of the areas that we
as parents can begin to support our children is in recognising, modelling and discussing
attitudes and behaviours around bullying and victimisation.
While we were growing up bullying was seen as an inevitable part of our school lives over
which we had little control. Contrary to past views children do not “just grow out of it”.
The current literature on bullying is that it can have long and short term psychological
effects on our children. By understanding the nature of bullying and its effects on our
children we can make a difference in supporting both our children who are being
victimized as well as those who are in engaged in bullying and harassment.
Ken Rigby, a researcher and criminologist, offers us a definition of bullying:
“It is the repeated oppression, psychological or physical of a less powerful person by a
more powerful individual or group of persons”
This definition draws our attention to the fact that being bullied, whether physically or
psychologically, exists in the mind of the victim, not only when he is being abused, but
also in anticipation of abusive treatment (and during the aftermath of that treatment).
So what does bullying look like? Bullying takes various forms:
- hitting and kicking
- verbal abuse (especially repeated name calling)
- cruel continued teasing
- removing and hiding belongings
- leaving people out of things on purpose
Bullying involves a power imbalance and is a form of aggression that is not accidental.
Bullying happens over and over again. There have been many recent studies of the
effects of this type of peer victimization on the well-being of children. These children are
more likely to have low self-esteem, suffer high levels of depression and have poor
general health. They are also likely to be socially isolated and more absent from school.
Research also tells us that the effects of bullying can persist into adult years, resulting in
lowered self-esteem and recurring bouts of depression. Persistent bullying may affect
the capacity of our children to concentrate at school and to acquire the knowledge
imparted as well as reaching their full potential.

Any of our children can be a victim OR bully given a set of circumstances. For example, a
child who may be gentle in nature could become a bully as a means of expressing rage at
the fact that their parents fight all the time. Or a child, who up until now has been one of
the more popular kids in class, may be picked on or bullied by a child who resents them
for this very reason. From a parent’s point of view it becomes important not to judge the
children but to begin to be aware of the signs that our child may be a victim of bullying or
that our child may be engaging in bullying behaviour. Not only does the targeted child
need help, but so does the bully. We can begin to support the school and the staff by
becoming aware of the problem but also by opening our eyes to what is happening with
our own children at home.
We can:
- listen to our children and encourage them to talk about events at school
- we can talk about how they are being treated by their peers so they can identify
problems
- we can take claims of being bullied seriously and report this immediately to the
school
- we can be on the outlook for signs that our children are being bullied (see list
below)
- we can praise kindness towards others and teach tolerance
- we can have conversations about the effects of bullying
- we can take our children to a psychologist if we feel that they are engaging in
aggressive behaviour
If our child is acting out with bullying and aggression then we need to recognise that this
may have a long-term effect on their behaviour and social interactions. Bullies have not
internalised social ‘rules” for behaviour such as having positive interactions and solving
problems. Bullies need to be taught self-control, cooperating, and problem solving,
helping others, sharing and making less impulsive decisions. Children who are bullies
need our help and we can begin to recognise their behaviour when: “they blame others
or act out as though they have no control over their actions, problems or situations”.
If our child is being targeted by bullies we need to begin to protect them and to make
them feel safe. In some cases, targeted children exhibit some social problems of their
own which make them feel easily victimised.
Some signs and symptoms that your child is being victimised are:
- losing objects without reasonable explanation
- torn clothing
- needing extra treats in their lunch box
- starving after school
- reticent to go to school
- headaches, stomach aches, nervousness
- change in mood from normal – more angry, sad, fearful
- concerned about inviting friends over or accepting invitations from friends

We cannot, as parents, begin from a place of ignorance and denial. Observational
research shows that bullying is a common phenomenon and that no school can claim to
have no bullying and victimisation. Also, many different types of children engage in
bullying, and many different types of children become victims. Bullying is very stressful
for victims, onlookers and eventually even for bullies. Bullying is kept hidden from adults
and teachers. What is most important to note is that our boys are VERY effective in
stopping bullying when they intervene. It is our role to support the school and our boys
by opening up the channels of communication about bullying behaviour and the
importance of standing up for a more positive interaction with their peers. We need to
encourage our boys to:
-
talk to the bully and label the behaviour as bullying and tell the bully to stop
to reach out to victims in friendship and provide comfort and support and to be
an ally
to report the bullying to the staff or to ourselves
to remind our boys that TELLING is reporting to get someone OUT of trouble but
it’s not the same as ratting, which is to get someone into trouble
By opening the conversation up with our children we can empower those that are victims
and help those who are acting out and aggressing. We can also encourage those who
look on to take action and to support better relations. 48% of bullies say that they have
talked to their parents about bullying problems and 62% of victims indicate that they
have talked to their parents about being victimised. We need to encourage our children
to tell someone they trust how they are feeling and to avoid keeping such stress bottled
up inside. We need to send a message, as parents, to say that bullying behaviour is not
tolerated.

GRADE 0-2 FORUM
On Monday evening 3 March 2014 from 18h00-19h00 there will be an open meeting for
any Grade 0-2 parents who may have any issues that they would like to discuss with the
school. These may be issues needing to be clarified or they might be ideas that you wish
to discuss with the school. The agenda for the evening’s discussion will be open and will
be agreed upon by all those present at the start of the meeting. Please note matters of a
personal nature cannot be discuss at this meeting.
Grade 3-4 forum will take place on Monday, 17 March and Grade 5-7 on Monday, 24
March from 18h00 – 19h00.
