Class on Display at Awards Banquet
Class was the prevalent theme at the annual awards banquet a few weeks ago, and I don’t just mean
the class champions from the road racing season. I’m talking about people like Monte Shelton
who brings his own award trophies to present to Rose Cup winner Todd Harris, even though
Monte’s own entry was disallowed for the race. And, how about people like Ron Brown and Fred
Ankeny who have supported the region for years, and Nick Fluge and Mike O’Callaghan? These
are but a few of those honored at the banquet, and I wish we could list everybody. But, we’ll make
that even more of a goal for 2008 in the pages of the Loud Pedal, on our new Web site and in event
press releases. It was my pleasure to announce that once again we will have a sponsor for the 2008
road racing season: Fluge Global Adventures. I don’t think any region is so blessed.
Good news from our neighbors to the near south. Reno Region’s Jim Gandy writes to tell us:
“Just want to let you and Oregon Region know that Reno Region is still moving forward with
plans for a Club Race at Reno-Fernley Raceway next year. The date is still June 14-15 -- that’s
Fathers Day weekend -- and we’ve recently settled on what kind of race we want it to be. We’ve
chosen the ambitious route, opting for a two-day single National, with the addition of a Restricted
Regional for IT and also a NORPAC Vintage race, if we can get it. We’ve made progress this year;
the number of people interested in and helping with our Track Events has grown, and we’ve set
aside the funds we’ll need for this first racing effort. But we’re nowhere near able to do something
like this on our own, and anyone who wants to be a part of this event will be welcome. Anyone
who’s looking for National points or just wants to race on a new circuit, and anyone who wants to
volunteer to help make a first-time event a reality, can be assured we’ll be very happy to see them
here,” Gandy adds. Stay tuned for more on possible joint events.

A Heartfelt Thank You for the 2007 Season
Happy Holidays to all of our Oregon Region SCCA Family.
Board is much appreciated and very helpful to achieving goals.
This is a great time to share with you some
things that enriched the last year for me
and some my hopes for the coming season. Whether you are preparing the car,
driving it, working the track, or cheering your favorite driver nothing beats the
fun and excitement of these experiences
and sharing them with your family and
friends.
Volunteers: None of us would get to have
our fun if it wasn’t for the numerous people who come out to work the corners, do
timing and scoring, man emergency vehicles and do all of the tasks that allow
Solo, Rally and Racing to happen. Thank
you for your hard work and devotion.

Gary Bockman: I hope all of you appreciate how lucky we are to have Gary as part
of our racing community. For at least 25
years Gary’s passion has been our local
racing community. He has provided invaluable advice and friendship for SCCA
while running Cascade Sports Car Club
and FOPIR.
Nick Fluge: Nick brought us fun, excitement, glamour and fun. Nick is a fountain
of ideas and enthusiasm that keep us all
energized. We hope Mt. Everest and the
Scottish Highlands don’t keep Nick from

Every once in a while, there’s a
rally that people talk about for
years afterward. The 2007 Gran
Prix Imports Oregon 1000 Rally
was such an event, and if you
weren’t there, you’re likely to be
kicking yourself for quite a while.
Ralllymaster Kevin Poirier and
ORG have set a new standard
for the longest and most hotly
contested rally in the Northwest.
And they gave the rally an extra
boost with some fun new twists.
The rally started on Friday, September 21 at Gran Prix Imports,
a sports and exotic auto dealership in Wilsonville. Prior to the
start, the GPI staff served snacks
and espresso from their in-house
coffee bar. Pirelli gift bags were
distributed to all entrants and
rally workers, and each car participated in a ceremonial start in
front of the showroom.
The rally route took 13 teams
on a scenic tour over backroads
from Keizer through Stayton
and the eastern Willamette Valley down to Roseburg. As teams
arrived at the hotel, a catered
dinner and prepaid rooms were
waiting. While the wine and beer

through the woods to the south
coast. The last leg took competitors past Humbug Mountain
State Park and into Port Orford.
As always, the Port Orford
Chamber of Commerce welcomed the rally to town with a
spaghetti dinner and any assistance we needed. Rallyists were
given room keys to the Castaway
By The Sea Motel, with spectacular views of Humbug Mountain and the ocean. After a good
night’s rest (except for the Stock
class Navigators, who burned the
midnight oil with their pens and
calculators) the rally was again
treated to Port Orford hospitality with a waffle breakfast.

The last day of the event took
teams back over the mountains
and generally northward, with
the last legs run back in the Willamette Valley north of Veneta.
From the last checkpoint, it was
a short run up to Albany and the
closing banquet at Novak’s Hungarian Restaurant.
When the scores were tallied, the
overall victory and first place
in Equipped class went to April
Smith and Marcus Song of Team
Mitsubishi. The pair finished the
rally with a total of 87 points over
1,000 kilometers and three days of
driving in their Mitsubishi Outlander, on loan from the manufacturer for use in the Alcan 5000
this coming winter. Second place
in Equipped went to Ron Sorem
and Max Maysburd in a Subaru
Legacy, and third place to the
team of Dan Comden and Hans
Andomeit in a Saab 900.
Limited class honors went to
Kathryn Hansen and Steve Perret in their Subaru 2.5RS wagon,
finishing the weekend with 265
points, followed closely by Scott
Huhn and Kristen Tabor, also in
a Subaru, in second place with
280 points. Third position went
to Marinus and Renee Damm in
their bright red BMW 325ix, and
Mike and Colin Nagle rounded
out the Limited class in their
Dodge SRT4 Neon.
In Stock class, the victory went
to the Subaru team of Paul
Eklund, Kala Rounds, and R.
Dale Kraushaar, with a total of
232 points. Second place went
to the Team Mitsubishi entry
of Jeff Zurschmeide and Gary
Bockman, and third was claimed
by Bruce and Janice Tabor in
their Subaru WRX wagon.
Reid Trummel and Dave Reich
had the hard luck story of the
weekend. They were running a
solid second place in Stock class
when the alternator failed on
their V8-powered right hand
drive MGB-GT. Even missing all
of Sunday afternoon and receiving max leg scores, their performance for the weekend earned
them a fourth place finish! Gloria and Randy Hale and Bob and
Marie Sherman rounded out the
six entries in Stock class.
The Oregon 1000 may have been
this Summer’s last hurrah – but
since Summer had to go, it went
out in style this year for those
who were there to enjoy it. Keep
your eyes and ears open, because
you don’t want to miss the next
event like this.

$250,000 Paid Out at Runoffs
At the end of October, based upon year to
date, SCCA INC is projecting an operating income of approximately $200K. The
original budget called for an operating income of $275K.
The temporary membership program was
budgeted for 2007; however, because it is
not yet fully operational, it is responsible
for the YTD shortfall in membership revenue. The shortfall in temporary membership revenue is offset by the associated
savings in temporary membership expenses. ProSolo revenues have fallen far
short of budget due to low turnouts and
cancelled events. This program will get
greater attention as we budget for 2008.
The “Street Smarts” program, which is a
partnership project with the BMW Owners club and The Tire Rack, is ready for
the rollout at the national convention.
The primary purpose of this program is
to benefit young drivers; however it will
also build community awareness of the
SCCA. It is expected to ease site acquisition for Solo and thus generate funds for
the regions. The program will certainly
build a sense of togetherness between the
Solo and Road Race communities in the
regions.
Eric Prill reports that the outside sales effort has not yielded the hoped for results.
We will not be renewing the full agreement with our outside sales entity (Dean
Reinke), although we will offer an arrangement that is commission-based. We
have not given up on the concept of having a sales entity on retainer or salary. We
have simply recognized that we have not
yet found the right individual.
More than $250,000 in contingencies was
paid out at The Run-Offs. This figure does
not include payouts from companies such
as Goodyear, Mazda, and others, which
are not administered by the SCCA. Over-

all, more than $725,000 in contingencies
was administered or verified by SCCA
across the Club, Rally and Solo programs
in 2007, excluding basic programs.
As I reported last month, SPEED will
carry the 2008 World Challenge season.
They have also agreed to continue Runoffs Coverage for 2008 and add the VW
Jetta TDi Cup as well. We have an agreement in principle, and are working on the
final contract. There is also the good news
for Solo. In August we reached an agreement in principle with Tire Rack for 2008
through 2010 National Solo program
sponsorship. However, as of this writing
we have not signed a contract
A tip-of-the-helmet goes out to Eric and
his staff for putting on a very successful
Club Racing/Runoffs media function on
Oct. 5. They utilized eight of the VW GTIs
in a PDX that featured all three Topeka
TV stations as well as radio personalities,
with several of our returning Champions
serving as instructors at the event.
In January Colan Arnold’s goal was to
stop the decline in membership. Toward
that end, existing programs have been
changed and new programs started. The
short-list of program changes and additions include: First Gear, the member referral program, volunteer incentives, and
weekend memberships for Club Racing,
Rally and Solo. In addition, membership
has made copies of SportsCar available to
Regions for recruiting, and to provide subscriptions to local libraries. There is also
a new brochure with a special first year
dues rate. Membership currently stands at
49,985, a decline of 1,098 members since
January 1, 2007. While this does not meet
the goal for no decrease in membership
in 2007, it is important to note that only
the First Gear changes were implemented
before the prime membership growth season.
The club had 31 First Gear members in
January of 2007 compared to 30 at the
same time in 2006. By the end of October
2007, First Gear membership had grown
to 181. This compares to 20 members at
the end of October 2006.
The Member Referral program has brought
in 655 new members since its inception
in June. By the end of October, regions
had issued almost 700 Weekend Memberships at Club Racing events. Thirty-six of
the temporary memberships subsequently
converted to annual memberships.
2007 membership retention is 76.6%.
This compares to a 75.1% renewal rate
in 2006. Competition license issuance for
2007 is approximately 9% below the same
period in 2006. It is important to note that
the number of licenses issued in 2006 was
up 8% over 2005. The membership breakdown is: Club Racing 55.3%, Pro Racing
9.9% and Rally/Solo 29.3%.
Nashville Super speedway will be the
venue for the 2008 national RallyCross
championships. This move was made to
help grow the event and move it into a
larger media market.
The Solo Program Numbers are:
Sanctioned events, projection through
2007: 1198 events, average of 65/event,
for a total number of entrants of 86,433.
This represents a drop of about 3%, which
is actually good news and shows the program’s strength, given the increase in site
issues and travel costs.
The National Tour: 10 events with an average entry of 232 (2006 average of 247).
This 6% drop due to schedule issues and
travel costs. Pro Solo: 9 events with an average entry of 172 (2006 average of 180
and a historical average of 165). Given
the nature of this year’s rebuilding plans,
which included the program not being a
series for the first time in 25 years, some
significant schedule issues, and increasing
travel costs, this is a remarkable result.

Special Awards Honor Some of the Best in Solo
This month’s article writes itself. At our
year-end awards banquet, I handed out
the Director’s Special Awards. Over the
years, these awards have been handed out
under various names and sometimes additional awards are made to fit someone
that deserves extra recognition.
Those who made it to the awards banquet
know who got this years awards. I explained a bit about why each person was
receiving their award, but as I handed out
the Driver of the Year award and shared a
bit of the criteria for that award, it occurred to me that not everyone knows the
criteria for each award. The criteria that I
used are essentially the same as in years
past and date back at least as far as the
tenure of Ed and Donna LaPlante.
Here are your 2007 Director’s Award
winners and the definitions used for these
awards:
Competitor of the Year - Arron Mauldin
The Competitor of the Year is someone
that shows great enthusiasm for the sport
and does so with style. This person will
consistently place at the top of their class
and either competed despite some sort of
adversity or demonstrated courage during
the year.
Driver of the Year - Tami Daniels
The Driver of the Year is an enthusiastic
and active participant in the region and is
versatile. This person is also an excellent
representative of Oregon Region when
traveling to other clubs, other regions and
National events. This person will consistently do their best while and be noticed
for achievements. This driver is fun to
watch and respected and observed by others for their driving abilities.
Sportsman of the Year - Caleb Veach
The Sportsman of the Year is a role model
for the sport of autocross.
This person is willing to share their expertise to promote the sport and help others
improve. This person enjoys competing
and promotes good competition.
Most Improved - Michele Milder
The Most Improved driver shows steady
improvement over the season. This driver
makes a conscientious effort to improve
themselves, both in driving skills and in
vehicle preparation. This person accepts
constructive criticism with a smile.
Rookie of the Year - Dennis Healy
The Rookie of the Year is a first year competitor. This person obviously enjoys the
sport and its competition. This person embraces both the driving and the working
aspects of the sport.
Every award on this list had someone else
that was deserving of the award. Most important to me is that all of you know that
the club is what it is because of you. I appreciate your contribution to making this
club worthwhile and, based on the nominations I got for these awards& Your fellow competitors appreciate your contribution as well.
In other news, I was re-elected to the position of Solo Director. I will gladly serve
you again in 2008. However, I will be
working on a more organized campaign to
get somebody else elected to this position
in 2009. :-)

What I Want for Christmas!
Ghost Tracks Revisits the
Asphalt Playgrounds
of Bygone Eras
Ghost Tracks, a then-and-now look
at the history of some of sports car
racing’s greatest tracks, is Pete
Hylton’s testament to the enduring
impact these sites have had on the
progression of the sport.
“The progression from street circuits, to airport circuits, to early
permanent facilities, to the current generation of tracks has been
amazing,” Hylton said. “It is part
of what has shaped our sport.”
After retiring from his position on
the board, he volunteered to become historian and archivist for the
world’s largest active motorsports
membership organization.
Hylton also became a contributing
writer for “SportsCar,” the SCCA’s
official magazine. Ghost Tracks is
based on the series of the same
name published between 2001-7.
This is his second book on the
history of the organization. Ghost
Tracks takes readers back to such
great permanent tracks as MidAmerica Raceway, Meadowdale,
Marlboro and Brooklands, along
In Ghost Tracks, Hylton describes
the tracks as “the asphalt playgrounds of race car drivers, echoing with the roar of engines and the
squeal of skinny bias-ply tires. The
paddocks were filled with gentleman racers tinkering on Ferraris,
OSCAs, bathtub Porsches and
Coopers. Now, they sit silent and
the engines scream only in memories.”
Hylton has first-hand knowledge
of the subject. In the 1980’s, he
raced Mid-America Raceway, one
of the tracks profiled in the book.
He joined the Sports Car Club of
America (www.scca.com) as a
high school student in 1973 and
competed for 25 years.
He served on the SCCA board of
directors for nine years, and holds
the honor of being the youngestever elected member of that body.

“At one point my 6-year-old
daughter became convinced that
she could hear a race car coming
and that we needed to get off the
pavement. Perhaps she did hear
the ghosts of SCCA races 30 years
ago. When I tried, I almost could
too.”
At the end of his quest, Hylton
concluded that there was very little
difference between the tracks of
the bygone eras and today.
Time and technology may have
progressed. But there is actually a
great deal of similarity between the
old and new tracks — both were
constructed to give racers a fun
and challenging place to go play
with their toys.
Ultimately, that is what SCCA is
about. “We are people who love
cars, and love driving them fast,”
with airstrips, parks, stadiums and
roadways across the country where
drivers competed in the early years
of club racing history.
In many cases, all that remains is
an overgrowth of trees, shrubs and
weeds while other sites have been
replaced by shopping malls and
housing development.
In many cases, Pete found traces of
the original course… and perhaps
the spirit of long-gone drivers.
Hylton says. “For well over 50
years we’ve been looking for fun
places to do that. So not surprisingly, there are a lot of similarities
between the historical tracks and
today’s circuits.”

improved course viewing, revised grid
arrangement, improved traffic flow and
safety/paddock parking assignments.
This year’s survey shows a high level of
participant satisfaction, but gives us clues
to areas needing further improvement.
The 2008 edition of the event will have
the following key areas targeted for improvements: site/surface cleaning using a
sweeper/vac, further revisions to grid to
avoid surprises from garage rentals and to
fine tune viewing areas.
Since there is a high probability that 2008
will be the last year for the event to be at
HPT, efforts have already begun to secure
a location for the 2009 event. This relocation will be significantly more difficult
than the last major relocation (1995) as
the event has almost doubled in size during the years in Topeka.
It is intended that both ProSolo and the
National Tour will utilize an automated
driver identification system, such as bar
codes. Besides having reliable timing
equipment, this is the single biggest factor
in being able to move beyond our current
cap on the number of competitors. We ex-

Time to Wind Down after 13 Years
Well, after thirteen years this column has
begun to “wind down.” Time is the enemy
of all racers and just now there just isn’t
enough time to allow me to “cover all the
bases” to which I’ve committed.
After long negotiations, Brian Towey of
SM fame has agreed to handle the school
next season. I will continue to handle assembling the class and licensing the novices, but from Friday night ground school
on it will be Brian’s show.
With Brian’s skill and charisma, this will
definitely be a huge step-up for the novice
program here in Oregon Region. I will be
working with Gary Van Horn to transition
the rest of the Competition Manager’s duties to him.
Don’t worry, I will still bore you with
Directly Duck elsewhere in these pages,
but as you have probably noticed, those
offerings are more along the line of the
Jack Webb “Just the facts” school of journalism.
My offerings in this column are where
my heart lies, talking about our members,
updating the local news and occasionally
editorializing. DuckStop has always been
about the people in this region and their
comings and goings.

good to know how the “Dark side” operates before you need to file a protest.
There is not too much to update on the
member front. John Bradshaw did a
quick in-&-out for surgery. By now he has
the motor home back in a much warmer
climate to the south.

Now for a reminiscence on how my favorite corner worker came to be. It seems
in 1972 we loaded the sheepdog into our
‘64 beetle and hit the road for her first trip
to the Indy 500, (it was about 20th.)
About the time we got to Anderson IN,
she swore she never knew that someone
could talk non-stop for six hours without
taking a breath. In my own defense, I was
talking about the sport that brings us all
here. Besides, I had to catch her up on
Indy history from the fifties and the sixties didn’t I?
Well, to make a long story short, during
the race driver Mike Mosley landed right
in front of us on fire (we were in the front
row of grandstand C). On the way home
Cheryl said she, “never again wanted
to be at the track and feel that helpless”
when someone was in trouble.
So a corner worker was born that day in
May. Sure it took another six years before
we found the wonderful group of people
in SCCA, and still another ten after that
before she became “Mindy,” but it’s a
route that has changed both of our lives
for the better.

Rally & RallyCross Winners Honored
Well, folks, it’s the end of another rally
year.
I’m sure as we head into the off-season
(all three months of it), everyone in the
rally community will take this time to look
back at past performance, fine-tune or just
plain fix whatever got broke or tweaked,
and, of course, look ahead to 2008.
In the “looking back” department, Oregon
Rally Group combined with Cascade’s
TSD rally arm to hold a joint Rally Awards
party on November 8 at the Cornelius Pass
Roadhouse McMenamins. We honored
Cascade’s Friday Nighter series winners
in each class as well as the overall series
winners, as well as ORG’s RallyCross
season winners and the Adelaide Zink
Rally Worker of the Year Award.
And in the “looking forward to next year”
department, it looks like we’ve got a
full schedule of rally fun on deck! The
RallyCross department is hammering out
their schedule; looks like we’ll be hosting a National RallyCross weekend, as
well as plans for the Triple Threat weekend along with Cascade’s rallies. Stage
Rally has Oregon Trail moving to May,
which will make things a little easier on
the organizing committee (most of whom
are Tabors, and accountants… and April
is a Bad Time Of Year for… well… any-

The Annual Portland Auto Show was
mentioned and Randy agreed to contact
Nick to find out the necessary preparations and to try to get a committee
formed to work on this event.

We are set for 8 race dates next year
including Rose Cup. Todd worked with
Cascade to try to alternate our events to
best serve both groups.
NEW BUSINESS – Letter read from
Gary Bockman concerning the future
of FOPIR and advising of a meeting to
be held on 10/18. They are hoping to
gather at least one representative from
every user group of PIR.
