Dear Parents Congratulations to Jessie and Harrison who attended the Opera House on Wednesday evening to participate in the choir. I am told it was a spectacular event. Jessie and Hannah start their transition to high school this Friday and will attend Mudgee High school every Friday until the end of term. We wish them well in their preparation for High school. I have attached a transition plan to this week’s newsletter to inform families of all the dates they need to know in regard to high school visits. Next Thursday, we will be visiting the Art gallery in Bathurst and enjoying a swim at the Aquatic centre. I have attached a permission note to this week’s newsletter and ask that you sign the note and return to school early next week. We will be hiring a small bus from Bathurst and I will be driving the bus to and from Hill End which is a more convenient means of transport and one which should be fun. Students will require a packed lunch, drink, school uniform, school hat, swimming costumes and a change of clothes to enjoy the day in Bathurst. Michelle Gallop AASC SPORT We had a visit from Nina on Monday. Students showed Nina their bike riding skills during sport. She was most impressed with their SLOW race! Students practice their slow bike riding to enable them to ride safely when we sometimes ride out of school grounds during lunch time. Of course they like to ride fast too! P a g e 2 T h e g o l d e n q u i l l writing with Mrs Gallop On Tuesday morning, Mrs Shanahan took us outside to the garden to pick a radish for us. We all had one each. It was peppery and I liked the radish. I like the school garden very much. Grace Y1 Volcano Dinosaurs Once upon a time there was a dinosaur called Connor. He danced at the volcano. When he started to dance the volcano started to erupt. Conner ran back home. By William Y2 Once upon a time a dinosaur named Trent wanted to have an adventure, so he went to the volcano then he danced at the volcano. When he was in the middle of his dance the volcano started to erupt. When the volcano The End By Allen YK erupted, the volcano got hotter and hotter and Trent danced faster and faster. Trent wanted to go home so he ran faster than a meteorite and he got there. And art garden class yummy radish On Tuesday, we picked some of our radishes to eat. They were yummy. Garden Update This is was our first harvest. At present we have growing - peas, kale, spinach, radish, carrots, corn, tomato and beetroot. We planted some cucumber, nasturtiums, lettuce, chives, oregano, basil and more tomato seeds. In our pots we have blueberry, pomegranate, strawberry, blackberry, parsley and two bush tucker foods - the yam daisy and flax lily. Wow! T e r m 4 W e e k 2 P a g e 3 Flashback to 1872! On this day 19th October 1872 the largest single piece of gold known as the 'Beyers and Holtermann Specimen' was unearthed at Hawkins Hill, Hill End. Later the specimen was crushed, along with 272 tonnes of other ore, from the mine containing over 15,488 ounces of gold. A few months later a larger mass of gold was found with an estimated weight of 5,000 ounces but the miners broke it up underground to save the arduous task of manhandling another huge piece to the surface. Weighing approximately 3,000 ounces, it was put on display in a tent in the village where people paid to see it. Hill End became famous overnight with thousands of people flocking to the area to make their fortune. 15/10/2012 Garfield VOL 1 ISSUE 3 Jim Davis! Jim Davis is the creator of Garfield. He was born July 28, 1945, in Marion near, Indiana. Jim grew up on a small farm in Fairmount, Indiana. Jim used his family as characters in Garfield. They were the Jon Arbuckle’s family. As a kid, Jim was forced to stay in his bedroom and avoided the chores because of his asthma. To keep himself occupied his mum taught him to draw. In Jim’s childhood he loved the Sunday comics, and his favourite comic strip was “Peanuts” and “Beetle Baily” and that what his influences. Jim published his first comic strip called “Gnorm Gnat”. It ran weekly in the Indiana newspaper for 5 YEARS. After lots of hard work, Jim finally came up with Garfield. Since then Garfield has been a worldwide success. Garfield Garfield is a ginger cat that LOVES to eat lasagne and he always gets his own way and he has his own slave Odie the dog. Odie gets the remote and entertains Garfield and does exactly what he says even though it’s usually stupid. Hill End in 1872 was a gold town at its peak. According to the Empire 7 June 1872, "The streets were thronged by a motley crowd; the stores and places of business crowded with customers; the little theatre so densely packed by an admiring audience, that there was not what is facetiously called 'standing room,' and even the public-houses, whose name is history legion, were crammed. The general aspect of the crowds of decently dressed folk who thronged 'The Hill' was that of respectability rough indeed in many respects, and loud and noisy too, in some instances, but not disreputable, and altogether good-humoured." I did this Garfield newsletter because I was doing some work about Jim Davis and how he created Garfield. It has become so successful worldwide. I just hope you learn something new or just enjoy it. Hannah Y6 Upcoming Video Conferences 24th October - Dynamic Earth This is an interactive workshop with experiments that explores the structure of the earth and plate tectonics. Students will be able to make a volcano erupt in their own classroom and learn about the layering of lava flows. The lesson will also show Australian Museum specimens and involve question and answer opportunities. Student of the Week William Drakeford for great spelling test results this week 30th October - Interactive Invertebrates Investigate the amazing diversity of invertebrates that inhabit your school. In this indoor and outdoor video conference students will learn about the importance of invertebrates, their features and habitats and how to safely collect them. Students will conduct an invertebrate investigation in the grounds of their school. Collected invertebrates will be graphed and identified during the second part of the session.
