In celebration of twenty-five years of koto playing and her promotion to Dai Shihan (Grandmaster) rank last summer, Linda Kako Caplan will perform in concert with two outstanding koto artists. Special guest artist Madame Junko Chikushi is the sandai-me Soke (third generation Headmaster) of Chikushikai Koto Linda Kako Caplan School in Fukuoka, Japan. This is the first time a Chikushikai Soke has ever visited Canada. In addition to being a performer, teacher, composer, lecturer, and recording artist, Mme. Chikushi is also a board member of the Fukuoka Sankyoku Kyokai and an instructor in the Dept. of Arts at the University of Kyushu. Guest artist Madame Kazuko Muramoto, of San Lorenzo, California, holds the senate-level rank of Tobiume Tsukasa Dai Shihan and is the highest-ranked Chikushikai member outside Japan. She is a direct disciple of Katsuko Chikushi, the founder of Chikushikai. Mme. Muramoto began her koto studies in the internment camp in Topaz, Utah, during World War II. She entered Chikushikai when her family subsequently went to Kurume, a suburb of Fukuoka, and was one of the youngest students to be accepted by Katsuko Chikushi. This concert is an official event celebrating the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Canada. It will be an all-contemporary program featuring some of the signature compositions of Katsuko Chikushi, as well as works of other Chikushikai composers. Tickets are $30 general admission and $25 for JCCC members and students, and are available at the JCCC. Fall 2008 JCCC Classes & Activities Register early to avoid disappointment! Speaker Series with the Lemon Creek Harmonica Band The Heritage Committee’s Speaker Series continues on Friday August 8, 2008 with the surviving members of the Lemon Creek Harmonica Band members: Ako Matsubayashi, 81, Noji Murase, 84, George Tsushima, 83 and Junji Ikeno, 85, in the Heritage Lounge at the JCCC. With British Columbia’s Nikkei population imprisoned in internment camps, Ikeno’s father, Kunisuke, was sent to Vancouver to recover typesetting fonts for the New Canadian newspaper. He found a box of harmonicas amongst articles confiscated by the Custodian of Enemy Properties. Presented with the box of harmonicas and facing an indefinite future in interior British Columbia, son Junji put out a call to form a harmonica band to which 16 enthusiastic teenage Nisei responded. The band was formed in the fall of 1942 by Junji Ikeno in the Lemon Creek Internment Camp where Nikkei families were interned throughout the duration of the World War II. Their first performance was at the inaugural opening of LC School on March 26, 1943. They are well known for their renditions of “Uramichi Jinsei”, “ You Are My Sunshine” and many more. They reunited in 1980 at a LC Reunion in Toronto. Come join us for a night of musical nostalgia and reminiscing as the Nikkei Voice’s Norm Ibuki interviews these four extraordinary members of our community (who still very much have a song in their hearts) and promise to bring along From the 2007 Lemon Creek Reunion their harmonicas with Photo courtesy of Takeshi Yano them! There will also be a special guest appearance by Sid Ikeda. The event gets underway at 7:00pm. Refreshments will be served afterwards. Geisha Comedy Mixes Slapstick and Drama Geisha and male competitiveness are put under a comedic microscope to edify and amuse in this 2007 film starring popular comedian Sadawo Abe. Maiko Haaaan!!!” takes a lighthearted look at the Japanese male’s obsession with this national icon. The film is fast-paced screwball comedy about a salaryman obsessed with Geishas, written by the extremely talented Kankuro Kudo (Ping Pong). Maiko Haaaan!!! (literally ‘Miss Maiko’ -- ‘haaaan’ is the honorific ‘san’ in the Kyoto dialect) tells the story of a salaryman who dumps his office worker girlfriend (who eventually apprentices as a Geisha in order to win him back) and moves to Kyoto to pursue his dream of playing a ‘strip baseball’ drinking game with a real Geisha. His quest exposes all sorts of class divisions and contradictions in Japanese society, which makes this a film that viewers who are interested in Japan will have to see. Along the way Abe runs afoul of an arrogant baseball player (Shinichi Tsutsumi) and the two engage in a ferocious competition that dominates the second half of the film. Nobuo Mizuta’s direction is light, inventive and keeps the bouyant comedy moving. According to Mr. Tanaka, "Meditation is one of the most important part of yoga. We practice Yoga postures to be able to sit steadily. In meditation we develop mental concentration by controlling our thoughts and stilling our mind that will lead us free from negative thought patterns. Practising Yoga will keep us positive and we can keep our peace of mind. It is easy to face all of the difficulties in our life if we have positive attitude." Euchre Night Review Once again the gathering included new players, regulars and returning players. The absence of a few of the more spirited (read noisy) players did nothing to dampen the fierce competition. In addition, the return of the Banzai Bonus saw more people taking chances on loners in an attempt to snag a special prize. After nine games of play, no one was able to catch Steve Oikawa. A full five points behind was Harry Mizutani and a mere point behind him was June Shin. Ruth Ogino scored the final loner to emerge the Banzai Champ. Congratulations to all! For more information on the remaining players and their final positions, plan to be at next year’s Euchre night!!! During the three weeks of operation, children were involved in many different activities that kept them active, energized and engrossed in the Japanese culture. Each session featured a variety of different activities. These sessions included many of the children’s favourite workshops, like cooking with Chef Shoji, Judo, Karate, Kendo, and Ikebana. The list just goes on. The campers also saw a return of the koto and cartoon workshops and had the opportunity for new experiences with workshops in sumo and shamisen. The success of Kamp Kodomo Summer 2008 could not have been possible without the dedication, enthusiasm and patience of Tearing into the news in the staff and many volunteers who helped at Iaido. the camp. Without their help, Kamp Kodomo would not have been as much fun, nor run as smoothly as it did! A special thank you to Patty, the head teacher. Another thank you to the volunteers Cameron, Nicole, Bowie, Janice and especially Hiro, who covered the afternoon extended care. Together they helped make the campers experience memorable. As well, many thanks to the dedicated instructors who rearranged their busy schedules or took time off of work to come and teach the campers. Another Great Nostalgia Night! by Carly Yoshida-Butryn About 350 people came out to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s annual Nostalgia Night on June 21 to celebrate achievements in the JC community. The formal portion of the evening took place in Kobayashi Hall where tributes to Caravan and many all-star athletes took place. Veteran Nisei athletes and siblings Maw Mori and Mary Ebata were honoured with the Pioneer Award for Excellence in athletics. Both Maw and Mary are bowling hall of famers for five and ten-pin, respectively. The Warriors baseball team was also honoured that night. The team, led by 46-year-old pitcher Mike Takahashi, won the 2007 championship in the Japanese Canadian Sunday baseball league. Also honoured was the 1964 Japan Camera baseball team, the last champions of the old Sunday hardball league. Mel Tsuji with the Warrior's Mike Takahashi. Nostalgia Night also paid tribute to Caravan, a cultural event that ran in Toronto from 1970 to Photo courtesy of Mark Suzuki-Tsuji. 2001. The JC community’s Tokyo Pavilion was always a huge draw with lots of food and activities like karaoke to keep attendees entertained. Photo displays in Shokokai Court showcased past Miss Tokyo and Caravans. To add some youthful flavour, Lindsay Tsuji and her hip-hop dance group, “Fo’Real,” along with Japanese Idol winner Jessica Tsuda performed on stage. Attendees had the chance to snack on delicious Japanese “soul food” prepared by a kitchen staff led by Theresa Sano. Salmon teriyaki, chicken wings, chow mein, and shoyu weiners were just some of the treats available. “I think the value that you get at Nostalgia Night is in terms of stories, meeting old friends again and the great food that gets produced,” says Peter Wakayama, master of ceremonies and chair of the Nostalgia Committee. “It’s a great social event.” Left: Former Mayors join former Miss Tokyo's on stage. Food, drink, games, stalls and especially music and dance created an authentic Japanese festival for the thousands of visitors to the Centre, many of whom claimed they hadn’t seen crowds like this since the days of Caravan! The JCCC thanks all the great visitors and volunteers who made the festival such a success, in particular Brent Borgundvaag and Nori Tanahashi who have acted as a bridge between the people of Toronto and Gujo Hachiman. The first annual Friends of Mike golf tournament and banquet held on May 31, 2008 was a huge success! Many thanks to the hard working committee of friends and family (Derek Shin, Gord Shin, Marty Kobayashi, Sharon Shintani, Carole Lamanna, Randy Sora, Al Sora and Steve Oikawa) who worked tirelessly for many months. The day started off tentatively with the threat of thunderstorms but the day at Bushwood turned out to be perfect for the 128 golfers. The afternoon continued at the JCCC with a wonderful buffet provided by Toriichi Catering, silent auction and speeches from Matt Hartley who wrote The Globe and Mail article on our family and FTD and Michael’s neurologist Dr. Sandra Black who spoke to the 400 people in attendance. My gratitude to the JCCC for their incredible support as well as the numerous sponsors for the event including our title sponsor, Marty Kobayashi of Dundee Private Investors. There are so many people that helped to make this a memorable and very special day for my family - thank you to each and every one. Our increasing circle of friends continues to amaze and astound us. We are truly fortunate to have this event to help support the high costs of Michael’s health care as well as contributing to the education fund for my children. On behalf of Michael, Thomas, Jaclyn and Erica, thank you for your tremendous support and friendship, June Shin 8 Erica, Thomas, June and Jaclyn Shin “International Marriage Workshop” A JSS – JCCC Co-presentation The JCCC is very proud to co-present an important series of workshops to support the many community and centre members who are part of the growing number of kokusai kekkon or “crosscultural marriages.” Japanese Social Services (JSS) will be organizing and conducting this series of four workshops. As an organization serving the Japanese-speaking community in the GTA, JSS has seen an increasing demand in counseling related to cross-nationality marriages. Cross-nationality couples encounter difficulties due to language barrier and varying customs. Differences in values may be exacerbated in situations involving the children’s education or interaction with in-laws. JSS is aware that these problems are usually combined with the challenges of adapting as an immigrant to a new social environment. It is a daunting task for Japanese newcomers to raise a family, while struggling to master an unfamiliar language, and dealing with the feeling of isolation which comes from not being able to fully participate in their non-Japanese partner’s friends and family circles. The first aim of the JCCC - JSS collaborative workshops is to help the participants come to an understanding of the nature of their problems. By listening to case studies and engaging in discussions, the participants will then hopefully see a positive path in order to deal with their problems. The workshops will be conducted in Japanese, by panellists who all have themselves experience with Kokusai Kekkon. Panelists : Yusuke Tanaka (Managing Editor of the Nikkei Voice), Takanori Kuge (JSS Counselor, CCA), Hiromi Noguchi (Counselor, Columnist, Author of “Rikon Kakekomi-dera”), Momo Kano (PHD in Sociology, Associate Programme Adviser of Robert H. Harney Ethnicity Program at University of Toronto) Facilitator : Koko Kikuchi (JSS Board Members, Former President of New Japanese Canadian Association) Date : July 23, July 30, August 6, August 13, 2008 Time : 6:30pm -8:30pm (Reception at 6:00pm) * Refreshments will be served. Admission : $ 20 ($5/session) $16 ($4/session) for JCCC members * Payment must be made in full at the first session Location : JCCC Heritage Lounge For more information please contact Japanese Social Services (JSS) at 416-385-9200 or email office@jss.ca. We are also very pleased to present Setsuko Thurlow, Member of the Order of Canada and Hibakusha (WWII Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor) as the evening’s keynote speaker. “Our goal is to create awareness that peace is possible,” says Thurlow, “and to tell the world that our city continues to uphold peacebuilding with our very own Mayor for Peace, Toronto Peace Garden and by having the unique recognition of being a nuclear weapons free-zone city.” In commemoration of the A-bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and August 9th in 1945, this educational exhibit features pictures and facts about the devastation of nuclear weapons. The exhibit also displays dramatic drawings and paintings from dozens of Hibakusha survivors, the only visual historical record of the first moments on the ground after the atomic bombings during WWII. The photo exhibit runs from August 6-11, 2008 with the “Paths to Hope” Peace Commemoration and Lantern Ceremony on August 9 at the Toronto Peace Garden, Nathan Phillips Square. Admission is free! FRIDAY AUGUST 8, 2008, 12:10pm – 12:50om Japan’s Everyday Harmony – Sound Japanese have long displayed a sensitivity to sounds from outdoors, whether of nature or human activity. The sounds of wind in a grove of bamboo, temple bells pealing, insects in autumn, wind chimes that make breeze seem cooler, the ingenious echoing “water harp”... This program shows how Japanese people appreciate and cultivate pleasant sounds in their environment. Japan Video Topics · Beach Cleaning Buggy · Secrets of the White Egret Castle · The Yukata Fashion Boom · WASHI, The Finest Japanese Paper · The Popular Tokyo English Bus Tour FRIDAY AUGUST 29, 2008, 12:10pm-12:40pm A Modern Eye for Traditional Beauty – Japanese Ink Painting (*Japanese with English Subtitles. Presented by The Japan Foundation, Toronto.) Japanese ink painting is in one sense simplicity itself - black ink (“sumi”) on white paper. But in the hands of a master artist/ calligrapher such as Sakaki Bakuzan, who is featured in this program, sumi takes on many shades of meaning. As with the great masters of the past, Bakuzan sees monochrome as a challenge rather than a constraint. Using techniques and materials refined ages ago, he succeeds in suggesting color and mood with understated elegance. Greenwood Reunion by Greenwood Reunion Committee Thank you Toronto for your hospitality to our Reunion. The visitors came from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Montreal, Thunder Bay and many towns in Ontario. The Reunion was for Christina Lake, Grand Forks, Greenwood and Midway and was well represented. The time elapsed from leaving the B.C. coast till now was 66 years so the interest was high for this event. The Shokokai Court in the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre was filled to capacity and many took advantage of the crowd to renew friendship and memories of by-gone days, the Court was cleverly decorated by a very experienced group of volunteers from the Centre and we were most satisfied by the result. The committee was able to distribute excess funds to the JCCC, Momiji Health Care Society, and Momiji Senior Odori Group. The committee also wishes to thank all persons who donated gifts for our attendance draw and 50/50 draw. We also wish to thank the Odori group and singers for sacrificing their time and energy. Thank you very much. It will be an evening to remember, featuring top-tier entertainment, fine cuisine, and most importantly to the Japanese Canadian community, guest speaker Brian Mulroney. To the majority of Canadians, Brian Mulroney is remembered as the 18th Prime Minister of Canada, from September 17, 1984, to June 25, 1993. But for Japanese Canadians, Mulroney and his Progressive Conservative Party brought closure to a “dark chapter” in Canadian history. On September 22, 1988, PM Brian Mulroney acknowledged the injustices suffered by Canadians of Japanese ancestry during and after WW2, and announced that a redress settlement had been reached with the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC). “I know that I speak for Members on all sides of the House today in offering to Japanese Canadians the formal and sincere apology of this Parliament for those past injustices against them, against their families, and against their heritage, and our solemn commitment and undertaking to Canadians of every origin that such violations will never again in this country be countenanced or repeated.” Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in the House of Commons, Sept. 22, 1988 Twenty years have passed since the successful outcome of the Japanese Canadian struggle for justice. In 2002, the Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation, which had administered the community funds to support the efforts to strengthen the Japanese Canadian community, finished its mandate. The Canadian Race Relations Foundation, of which its establishment was part of the Redress Agreement, opened its doors in November 1997, and has been working ever since to “foster racial harmony and cross-cultural understanding and help to eliminate racism.” According to the NAJC website, “For many, the settlement has finally given them peace of mind. Redress has restored a sense of identity and pride in being Japanese. …The settlement is seen as a precedent for legal and civil actions involving government decisions affecting the rights of other Canadians.” Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the former PM who made a difference in Canadian and Japanese Canadian history speak at the JCCC—the place which has played an important role in defining Japanese Canadian identity.
