This is a story of a little boy namedTheo who woke up one day and wonderedwhat

said, Now go get dressedand we will get started. She took one look at him and said
Theo, where are your shoes, and thoseclothesare all wrinkles son, I must iron
them. But when she reached for the ironing board it was no longer there. You see
Sarah Boone, a black woman inventedthe ironing board and .
Jan E. Matzelinger, a blabk man, inventedthe shoelasting machine.
Oh well, she said, pleasego and do somethingto your hair, Theo ran in his room to
comb his hair, but the comb was not there. You see,Walter Sammonsa black
man, invented the comb. Theo decidedto just brushhis hair,_butthe brushwas
gone. You seeLydia O Newman, a black female, invented the brush. Well this
was a sight, no shoes,wrinkled clothes,hair a mess,evenMoms hair without the
hair care inventionsof Madam C.J. Walker, well you get the picture Mom told
Theo, lets do our choresaround the houseandthentake a trip to the grocery store.
Theo's job was to sweep the floor. He sweptandswept and swept. When he
reachedfor the dust pffi, it was not there. You see,Lloyd P. Ray, a black man,
invented the dust pan. So he swepthis pile of dirt over in the corner and left it
there. He decidedto mop the floor but the mopwas gone. You see,
Thomas W, Stewart, a black man, inventedthe mop.
Theo yelled to his Morn, Mom, I'm not havingany luck. Well son, she said, let rne
finish washingtheseclothes and we will preparealist for the grocery store. When
the wash finished, she went to placethe clothesin the dryer but it was not there.
You see,George T. Samon, a black man, inventedthe clothes dryer. Mom
askedTheo to go get a pencil and somepaperto preparetheir list for the market.
So Theo ran for the paper and pencil but noticedthe pencil lead was broken. Well
lre was out of luck becauseJohn Love, a black man invented the pencil i
sharpener. Mom reachedfor a pen,but it wasnot therebecauseWilliam Purvis,
a black man, invented the fountain pen. As a matterof fact, Lee Burridge
invented the fype wrifing machine, and'W. A. Loveffe the advanced printing

theynoticedthe refrigeratorwasgone. You seeJohn Standard,a black man'
invented the refrigerator. Sotheyjust left the food on the counter.By thistime,
Theonoticedhe was gettingmighfycold. Mom went to turn up theheat, andwhat

in the srmrmertime they would havebeenout of luck becauseFrederick Jones,a
black man, inventedthe air conditioner. It was almosttime for Theo'sfatherto
arrivehome. He usuallytakesthebus. But therewasno bus, becauseit's
precursor as the electrictrolley, inventedby anotherblack man, Elbert R.

He usuallytakesthe elevatorfrom his officeon the 20thfloor, but therewasno

Whenthe fatherarrivedhe asked,Why areyou sittingin the dark? 'fr/hy? Because
