New Teacher at
Spring Valley
Middle/High
School
My name is Alyssa Smith, and I am excited to be the new
sixth grade Language Arts and eighth grade Social Studies
teacher at Spring Valley Middle/High School. I grew up
in River Falls, WI, and attended college at the University
of Wisconsin-River Falls, where I graduated in 2015 with a
degree in Secondary Education-Broadfield Social Studies.
This past spring I had a great student teaching
experience at New Richmond Middle School. While
studying at UW-River Falls I spent three and half months
taking part in their International Travelling Classroom,
where I was able to visit thirteen European countries. A
year after that, I spent two weeks in Japan learning about
their culture and Japanese-U.S. political relations. Since
then, one of my passions has become travelling. I love to
experience history and new cultures the world has to offer.
With my time abroad I love to share my experiences with
my students to make classes more engaging, relatable and
give students a global perspective. I grew up figure
skating and have been coaching figure skating for the past
six years. I enjoy working with kids, and I value the
relationships I have built with students and colleagues that
I have had the privilege to work with and learn from.
I am excited to be part of the Spring Valley Middle/High
School staff, and I am looking forward to what the rest of
the year brings!

Hibernating in Kindergarten!
For the 2nd year in a row, Braeden DuMond was selected to in
the prestigious Wisconsin School Music Association, Middle
School State Honors Choir. Auditions were held in April and
out of the hundreds that auditioned, few were selected to be
part of the project which includes choir, band and orchestra.
Selections were made based on the students’ solo
performance and sight-reading ability, and only 45 MS boys in
the entire state were selected to be a part of this elite choir.
The performance took place near Madison on Saturday,
October 31, 2015, where the students spent two days
rehearsing with nationally known conductor Dr. Maribeth
Gail Yoder-White. This is quite an honor for the Spring Valley
School District and our community, and we are all very proud
of you! Congratulations Braeden!

100 Mile Challenge
Through our school's involvement with Fuel Up To Play 60, Spring Valley Elementary School has implemented a "100 Mile Challenge Course."
Our purpose is to improve the health and well-being of children at school through daily physical activity in a non-competitive, supportive and
fully-inclusive environment. The "100 Mile Challenge" provides the opportunity to run or walk 100 miles at school during a single school year.
It is not a contest and it is not a race. It is to continue to make Spring Valley Elementary School a fun and healthy place to learn and grow.

Students in Miss Wohlk's 2nd grade class invited
horse trainer Sarah Erickson (Lana's mom) into our
classroom as a part of our reading curriculum. The
students' Essential Question of the Week was, "How
do we care for animals?" To extend their learning,
the students were able to learn from a REAL horse
trainer! The 2nd graders learned that caring for a
horse can be a lot of work. Thank you, Mrs. Erickson,
for visiting our class and giving us an opportunity to
dive deeper into our Essential Question and better
understand what it takes to care for animals!
Public Library Program During
Early Release
The Spring Valley Public Library will be hosting an after-school
program on Early Release Fridays during the school year that
feature an hour long craft project led by Ms. Julie Webb and
library staff. Upcoming Early Release days are December 4
2015, February 5, March 4, April 1 and May 6, 2016. Registration
is required to participate in the craft project and space is limited
to 50 participants; deadline for registration is the Wednesday of
that Early Release week. Crafts are from 1:30-2:30pm. Following
the craft project, from 2:30-4:00pm, the library will show a family friendly movie. Registration is not required to see the film.
Snacks will be provided. The craft project theme and movie title
will be announced two weeks leading up to the Early Release
date. Registration can be completed online at

CARDINAL KIDS’ CLUB
The goal of the CKC program is to provide quality before and
after school and all day summer child care in a fun, safe, and
caring environment that fosters self-esteem, respect, and
responsibility for self and others.
Child care will be available from 6:00–8:00 a.m. and 2:30–6:00
p.m. on school days and from 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on
non-school week days.
The before and after school program includes fun activities
ranging from arts and crafts, games, and outside play. We will
also provide a healthful and nutritious snack.
During in-service days and non-school days, children are

Another dance competition season is well underway for the Vallettes! Last
year, the team’s hard work paid off very well when they qualified to compete
at the WACPC State Dance Competition in La Crosse. Hoping to return
to State this year, the team of eleven hard-working young ladies has been
gearing up for their first competition, the Menomonie Holiday Classic, on
December 5th. The girls will be performing an exciting pom routine to “I’m
Taking You With Me” at two additional competitions: Conference Dance
Championships will be held on Saturday, January 16th at Eau Claire North
High School, and Regionals is once again at New Richmond High School on
Saturday, January 30th. If you love great performances, awesome music,
and lots of sparkles, come support the Vallettes this competition season!
A huge thank you to all who volunteer in our school
district. There are too many jobs for us to list that
volunteers have been involved with.

Welcome to the
School District of Spring Valley
Senior Tax Exchange Program (STEP)
STEP provides an opportunity for Social Security eligible senior citizens age 62 or older to work in the schools in exchange for a
property tax credit. Senior citizens who own a home and reside in the School District of Spring Valley are eligible. As an incentive to
involve seniors in the educational program, the school district reimburses them for their time. The workers will have the opportunity
to share their talents, gain an intergenerational experience, and make a difference in a student’s life.
STEP positions may be short or long term based on need. Teachers will be asked to identify areas where they need help, then we will
match the volunteers based on their skill and talents. Workers might read or work during the school day, or in after school
programs. They may help prepare special projects, chaperone field trips and assist with homework. The list is endless based on the
skills and talents of our workers. The reimbursement is $7.25 per hour, maximum of 59 hours per calendar year, maximum of $429.00

The STEP program started in Spring Valley on September 1, 2015. Since then we have placed 9 Spring Valley residents in our schools.
They are doing many activities with students such as reading, practicing speaking Spanish, tutoring, science projects, basically doing
anything that the teacher needs help with. This is such a good opportunity for the public to see the great things that are going on in
our schools. It also provides positive social and emotional interaction plus a one-on-one learning experience.
Stuff the Turkey Food Drive a Success
The Spring Valley Middle School Student Council again
organized a food drive to benefit the Spring Valley Food Pantry.
Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade had a friendly
competition to see which grade level could bring in the most
items. Extra points were given for paper products, toiletries,
and cleaning supplies. Over 400 pounds of donated food,
baking supplies, toiletries and cleaning products were taken to
the pantry. Thank you to all students and their families that
donated so generously to this food drive. The sixth grade class
donated the most items per student. Great job, everyone!
The High School Student Council and National
Honor Society continued their trick-or-treating
for canned goods. The tradition has been
going on for 9 years. This year approximately 30
students went door to door through the Spring
Valley community collecting canned goods for
the Spring Valley Food Pantry. Just over 1000
pounds of food and other goods was collected.
Thank you to the community for participating
in this event. We plan to do this again next year,
and will continue to donate the collected items
to the Spring Valley Food Pantry!

Play and learn provides an opportunity for
children to interact with their parents and
other children their age (toddlers and
preschoolers). Parents can also discuss

Educator and others going through

CPR RE-CERTIFICATION CLASS
A re-certification class is required every two
years for individuals holding a valid CPR
card. A review of how to position the
victim, ventilate and perform chest

according to the New American Heart
Association standards.

Parenting the Love and Logic WayTM
This class is for parents or anyone who
interacts with children and facilitated by
Stephanie Demers and Mindy Connors. By
attending this 6 week parenting program,
you will learn practical skills that will help
you feel more relaxed, hopeful and positive
about your children. As you learn more,
you’ll discover that parenting really can
be enjoyable…and that you can teach
personal responsibility and respect without
losing your children’s love. Parents will
learn how to avoid un-winnable powerstruggles and arguments, stay calm when
their kids do incredibly upsetting things, set
enforceable limits, avoid enabling and begin
empowering, help their kids learn from
mistakes rather than repeating them, and
much more! There is also childcare available
during the class for a small fee.

Parenting the Love and Logic Way™curriculum
was developed by Jim Fay and Charles Fay,

of the Love and Logic Institute, Inc., in Golden,
Colorado. Stephanie Demers and Mindy Connors are
independent facilitators of Love and Logic® and are
not employees of the Love and Logic Institute. CPR FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS
This course is designed for the average
citizen to help them learn the principles of
adult, child, and infant CPR. Course

TAE KWON DO
Now is the time to try this alternative form
of exercise and learn how to defend yourself
at the same time. Tae Kwon Do is held on
Wednesdays in the elementary gym starting
at 5:00 p.m. You are welcome to come and
observe the class and then decide whether
you want to join. This is a year-round class.
Monthly fees are as follows: K-5th grade =
$25.00; 6th – Adult = $30.00.
FAMILY OPEN GYM
Supervised free play basketball on Sundays
from 6:00-8:00 p.m. This is held at the
elementary school and is open to grades
4-12. Younger children are welcome when
accompanied by a parent/guardian.
Families are encouraged to participate with
their children. Open gym will begin in
November 2015 and continue through
March 2016.
ADULT OPEN GYM
Adult Open Gym is every Wednesday from
7:00-9:00 p.m. starting in November 2015
and running through March 2016 at the
Spring Valley MS/HS. It’s time to start
hitting the hoops and enjoy some great
recreational fun!

It may be cold and icy outdoors but the
school will provide you with a warmer
climate for exercise. Days are Monday

Reshape your body, revive your health!
“My ‘New Year Challenge’ is designed to set
you up with the tools you need to succeed
at being healthy and fit. You will learn how

The New Year’s Challenge will meet 2 times
over the course of 5 weeks. On the first night
we will cover: what foods you need to fuel
your body every time you eat, what foods
fight inflammation and which food create
addictions, which exercises will help you
to burn more fat and improve your blood
pressure, hormone levels, flexibility, which
exercises will help you build muscle and
increase your metabolism, & fitness
