MILESTONE MAG Est. 2002 JUNE 2 01 5 Made in America with good old American know-how! As we quickly approach the July 4th holiday, it is the perfect time to feature our “Made in America” manufacturers. The U.S. auto and racing industries are rooted in rich history and a spirit of ingenuity and determination. From Detroit’s auto boom to Pittsburgh’s steel mills, manufacturing changed the fabric of American life in the 20th century. Industrialization allowed workers with limited skills to climb up the economic ladder and the middle class was born. Detroit’s eventual dominance in the auto industry historians First Ford automated assembly line World Castings are made in the USA from high strength iron alloy from Indiana. High performance cast iron engine blocks and cylinder heads are produced in its ISO 9000 facility creating the highest quality products for street, drag racing, oval track or any professional venue. speculate had to do with first innovators like Henry Ford and Ransom Olds who happened to live in Michigan. Access to raw materials like steel and wood added viability. The people who built the car’s parts eventually learned so much about automotive manufacturing they went on to launch their own brands. Olds’ subcontractors included the Briscoe brothers who helped build Buick, and machinist Henry Leland who created Cadillac and Lincoln. The Dodge brothers got their their start making parts for both Olds and Henry Ford. William Durant, the man behind General Motors, was forced out of the company, forming Chevrolet while he was away. These American auto icons along with companies like our manufacturers continue to fuel the racing industry. Milestones in “Made in America” • Power assisted brakes were first employed in 1903 when air brakes were fitted to a car called the Tincher that was developed by Thomas L Tincher. • Charles Kettering invented the electrical starter motor ignition system, testing the first system in a Cadillac car in February 1911. • Mary Anderson devised a spring loaded “swinging arm” windscreen wiper and patented her invention in 1905.
