53 Maple Avenue, Scotia, NY 12302 • 518.374.3944 • www.animalprotective.org Anniversary Gala Raises $40K for Spay/Neuter Clinic The Waters Edge Lighthouse in Glenville was the site of our 80th Anniversary Tails by Twilight Gala on May 7. Honorary Chairs Jeff and Kara Haraden, owners of Mohawk Honda, were joined by our guest emcee, Liz Bishop of CBS 6, in presenting a fun evening of great food, music and auctions, all in support of our Community Spay/Neuter Program. Highlights of the night included a video produced by APF staffers Ramon Pruisscher and Richard Schellinger and a very “lively” live auction with celebrity auctioneer LeGrand Serras. But the show stopper was when Grand Central Station broke into a beautiful rendition of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” and serenaded an adorable litter if kittens. Volume 29 No. 2 80th Anniversary Adoptathon Throughout the summer, adopt a pet for just One cuddle was all it took for Dena Catucci to become smitten, and she adopted “Little Bandit” the next day. We are grateful to all who were involved and helped to raise over $40,000 for our spay/ neuter clinic. (More on page 2.) Special thanks to our sponsors: Mohawk Honda, Price Chopper, Love at first sight: Dena Catucci of Price Chopper adopted the kitten she met at Tails by Twilight. 19.31 $ Includes all cats one year or older and most dogs. Kittens $50. A date for next year’s gala will be announced soon. Stay tuned! First Animal Advocacy Day The APF proudly supported the first New York State Animal Advocacy Day in June, sponsored by Assemblyman Jim Tedisco and Senator Greg Ball. More than 500 animal advocates gathered in Albany to strengthen Buster’s Law and support other important pieces of anti-cruelty legislation. It has been 12 years since a tabby cat named Buster was doused with Summer 2011 kerosene and ignited by a Schenectady teen. Public outrage resulted in a statewide collection of 118,000 signatures to create the law which makes aggravated More than 500 attended Animal Advocacy Day in cruelty to animals a felony Albany. punishable by up to two us in speaking up for the animals. years in prison and a $5,000 fine. INSIDE THIS ISSUE… >Community Spay/ Neuter Clinic Plans > Fireplug 500 – September 10 >Just for Kids Who Want to be Vets >NEW Canine Companion Program OUR MISSION The purpose of the APF is to address pet overpopulation and animal suffering through education and appropriate action, to enhance human/animal relationships, and to provide care to animals in need. From the Executive Director Our Dream Takes Shape It has been nearly two years in the making and I am so pleased to present the plan for our new Community Spay/Neuter Clinic! The APF has long been committed to spay/neuter as the best way to address pet overpopulation. We currently provide roughly 3,000 low-cost surgeries annually, in addition to 1,000 surgeries for our shelter pets. Our present surgical suite limits our ability to do more. Once our new 1,500 sq. ft. clinic is in place, we will be able to consolidate all surgery in this building (which will sit to the far right side of our property as you face the shelter) and have the ability to perform low-cost surgery for cats and dogs on a much larger scale. When will we break ground? Once we have the funding, which is estimated at $600,000. We now have $190,000 dedicated to this project through fundraisers such as our gala, private donations, and other allocated monies. As we are going to press with this newsletter, we have just received word of a $100,000 grant through a private foundation. You will be hearing more about this tremendous gift soon. That puts us half way to our goal! If you wish to learn more or make a contribution, please contact me. Naming opportunities are available. For the animals, Rosalie R. They would socialize, exercise, train and give lots of belly rubs. Shelter life is stressful, especially when we are full, which has become more the rule than the exception. Many dogs and cats wait weeks and even months to be adopted. I remember how the staff and dogs welcomed me when I volunteered as a dog socializer. It was amazing how the disposition and attitude of a dog changed after running around, playing ball or just soaking up some sunshine. This type of interaction contributes to the mental wellbeing of a dog and gives us a little more Foster care saved Tina’s life. time to get them adopted. I am proud to say that we now have a group of amazingly dedicated people that work with our dogs regularly. They are our Canine Companions. Not only do they work with the dogs at the shelter, they also participate in adoption, offsite clinics and some will be fostering. Fostering gives a dog an even better chance of adoption as we are able to learn more about the dog’s true personality when in a home setting, especially the very shy ones. Tina is my own “foster failure.” She growled at people as they passed by her kennel and was painfully timid when outside of it. She had no chance of getting adopted while being kenneled. After just two months Tina is a happy, loving dog and my family and I cherish every sloppy kiss. If being a Canine Companion is something that interests you, please contact me at bellizzi@animalprotective.org. 8_ __________________________________________________________ 9_ __________________________________________________________ 10_ _________________________________________________________ 11_ _________________________________________________________ 12_ _________________________________________________________ 13_ _________________________________________________________ 14_ _________________________________________________________ 15_ _________________________________________________________ Total $__________________ Two Decades of Training Pet Academy has been providing various levels of dog training over the past 20 years. We have learned a lot about dog behavior from our shelter dogs and we have tailored our classes to best serve our dog-loving community. Many of these dogs are in our shelter because their owners had no guidance. Pet Academy offers the following courses to provide that guidance and to help achieve harmony between dogs and their families. 3Puppy Pre-School socialization is key Turning in Pledges Whether you are an individual or team walker, please bring your pledge form and all donations with you on the day of the walk. She is enamored of her big brother Bear and has been absolutely perfect ... No accidents, no chewing other than the dog toys and rawhides, she’s been great with Maddie and is just a loving, snuggly girl. I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to find her when she was lost. I think she truly is the dog we’ve been looking for all these months. Kathy Holub Sunny We adopted “Sonya” in January and it was the best thing we have done in years! We renamed her Sunny as she is truly the sunshine of our lives. If anyone is hesitant to adopt an older animal, please be reassured that they really do appreciate a good home and will bring you much happiness. Thanks for all the good work you do! Rod and Karen Mason
