A better way of living. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I n my first message as President of Beechwood Continuing Care, I referenced the ever changing health care system and the uncertainty it can present to leadership in long term care communities. However, I also expressed an optimism that given its position of leadership and respect in the community, Beechwood is well prepared to meet these challenges as it has in the past…with vision, compassion and keeping with its core values of excellence and quality of care. To that end, I’d like to share with you what we at BCC are doing to ensure we remain a leader in long term care in WNY. First and foremost, I’m pleased to announce that Beechwood Homes, in partnership with Hospice Buffalo, will be opening a dedicated hospice unit within Beechwood that will serve the local community. Beechwood Homes has had a long standing partnership with Hospice going back to 1992, when Beechwood was the first nursing home to join Hospice’s newly created nursing home program. Noting this strong partnership, we reached out to Hospice inviting them to consider our Homes as their premier location in the northtowns of Erie County. (Hospice Buffalo will also be partnering with other nursing homes in Buffalo and the southtowns.) We anticipate accepting hospice patients into this unit sometime this spring. Daniel P. O’Neill President & CEO Hospice believes our person-centered care philosophy – “Welcome Home” – and our household living model will provide a welcoming environment of comfort and care for hospice patients (and their families and friends) in their final months or weeks of illness. Specialized hospice care training will take place for Beechwood staff who choose to work in this unit. Hospice staff providing additional care and support services in this unit will receive “Welcome Home” training as well. We believe Hospice Buffalo fits very well into our Beechwood Continuing Care family! This unit will be known as Hospice “Wells” House at Beechwood Homes, named after former longtime Vice President of Finance, Bill Wells. The ideal location identified is the present location of Wesley Rehabilitation Center. The timing for this partnership is ideal as our Phase II construction project to create households in all units is near completion. As planned, Wesley will be moving to another unit on the opposite side of the building to be closer to our rehabilitation suite. Again, looking towards the future, last July, Beechwood participated in an “Opportunity for Development” application program for Assisted Living Program (ALP) beds through the Department of Health (DOH). NewYork State is encouraging long term care providers to convert skilled nursing home beds to ALP beds as it has been determined that there will be over 600 excess or unneeded nursing home beds in WNY by the year 2016. Our application was for 35 beds. We were approved to continue the process should we wish to do so. Out of over 150 applicants, only 19 were approved to proceed with this application process - Beechwood being the only provider in Erie County! Last, but certainly not least, to ensure we are meeting the expectations of quality care and service for our residents, Beechwood recently conducted a survey of our residents and families. Utilizing a national research firm specializing in long term care, we learned that our residents and families are very pleased with their care and the household living experience. Many commented on the extraordinary kindness and compassion of our staff, in addition to the extraordinary home environment. For example, in overall satisfaction, Beechwood scored 93% compared to the national average of 91%. However, knowing we can always improve and using the data provided in the surveys, we will be looking at areas that will further enrich our residents’ lives on a daily basis. As a mission driven organization, we at BCC are always looking for opportunities that will not only enhance our Welcome Home philosophy of care and our resident’s experience, but enable us to continue to grow and thus strengthen our entire continuum. Sincerely, Daniel P. O’Neill, President/CEO 2 SERVICE RECOGNITION AWARDS BCC Annual Years of Service Recognition Publicly recognizing our dedicated staff who have been an extended part of our Beechwood, Blocher and Asbury Pointe family is always a pleasure. Each year staff are honored for their multiple years of service for providing quality and compassionate care to our residents. Together we celebrate at a luncheon in their honor where they are awarded with a special gift. Our sincere thanks to these dedicated staff members who have given our residents so much for so many years! 30 YEARS 35 YEARS Fran Angelino 30 YEARS Marcia Karlinski Patricia Katashuk Kathryn Kunze 25 YEARS Sonya Jones - Blocher Elizabeth Lombardo Dawn Schwartz Linda Warthling 20 YEARS Jennifer Barbopoulos Yvonne Miller Rhonda Mohr Connie Smith 15 YEARS Sandra Abdulnabi Michelle Adams 15 YEARS 35 YEARS lt-rt: Daniel O’Neill , Pres./CEO; Fran Angelino (center); Kathy Nyquist, Beechwood Admin.; & Kristin Anderson,V.P. Founded in 1961, LeadingAge New York, formerly the New York Association of Homes & Services for the Aging (NYAHSA), represents not-for-profit, mission-driven and public continuing care providers, including nursing homes, senior housing, adult care facilities, continuing care retirement communities, assisted living and community service providers. Located in Albany, LeadingAge New York’s members employ 150,000 professionals serving more than 500,000 New Yorkers annually. C Kristin Crandall Administrator, Blocher Homes Kristin also recently joined the Alzheimer’s Association,Western New York Chapter, Board of Directors. The mission of AAWNY is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Kristin, who has been active with AAWNY for several years, co-chaired AAWNY’s Blondes vs. Brunettes powder puff football game last year; the event exceeded its goal and raised more than $77,000 for AAWNY. Kristin, who has been with Beechwood since 2011, has more than 20 years experience in the health care field, with an emphasis on the elder-geriatric population. Beechwood joins HEALTHeLINK e are pleased to announce that Beechwood is now a data source for HEALTHeLINK, a not-for-profit collaboration among physician, hospital and insurance organizations to share clinical information in efficient and meaningful ways to improve the delivery of care, enhance clinical outcomes and control healthcare costs throughout the region. manage our residents’ clinical care,” said Kathy Nyquist, administrator of the Beechwood Homes.“Typically, our elderly residents can have an average of 10-16 annual visits to various specialists and hospitals, not to mention pharmacy use. Up to date and accurate clinical communication is critical to ensure the best quality of care possible for our residents.” W Having one’s most current clinical history, listing of prescribed medications and other health information available is invaluable to physicians in providing more efficient care at the very point of care. With authorized consent, HEALTHeLINK currently delivers patient demographic and clinical information from 19 of Western New York’s 22 hospitals, three independent laboratory practices, five independent radiology practices and three home care agencies to participating HEALTHeLINK providers. What does this mean for our residents? Beechwood will be able to submit – with their permission – our residents’ admission, discharge and transfer notices securely and electronically through this clinical information exchange, allowing for better care coordination and communication among residents’ various treating physicians as they transition from one health care setting to another. “Our goal is to better utilize available technology to 4 BCC NEWS! It is at this time I receive calls from residents, families and friends of Beechwood Continuing Care who have questions regarding how do they go about leaving something to our Homes to benefit our residents in their wills. Although, I encourage our donors to contact their attorney or professional advisor, I do provide them with some basic information. It is important to note that there is no such thing as an insignificant gift. Anyone can arrange to leave a gift to the Beechwood/Blocher Foundation from his or her estate – no matter how big or small! Assuming you already have a will, it is as simple as adding a codicil (amendment) to your existing will. You can change it at anytime time you wish. Some people specify a certain dollar amount to leave to our Homes and others leave a percentage of their estate or an asset that would be left over after they have provided for their families. To be sure Beechwood receives your gift, you should state your intention in your will, directing the gift to “The Beechwood/Blocher Foundation” including specific wishes. In addition to leaving a direct monetary gift, you can leave such things of value as personal property, stock, life insurance, retirement funds or an IRA. If you are comfortable, notify Beechwood of your charitable intentions. We often are not aware of a bequest or other planned gift until after the donor’s death. This saddens me in that we will never have the honor of personally thanking this donor, but more important, we will not have the chance to engage in meaningful conversations as to how we could begin to identify areas of interest that will make their gift more personal and meaningful. Whether it is in the form of recognition or to ensure the fundamental intent of the gift, telling us at the time the bequest is written opens up so many opportunities. Bequests and other planned giving vehicles are wonderful ways to provide a legacy gift for our Homes and residents while meeting your philanthropic intentions. It often times provides taxsavings for you and your family. Please consider The Beechwood/Blocher Foundation in your “legacy” planning for the future. Beechwood is a partner with Leave A Legacy WNY which helps educate donors, professional advisors and attorneys, to promote gifts to local charities through wills and bequests. For more information and/or to receive a free Leave A Legacy Kit courtesy of Leave A Legacy of WNY, call Cheryl Wasson, Director of Development/Marketing at 716/810-7370 or consult with your attorney or professional advisor. If you have any questions regarding ways in which you can support our Homes, please feel free to call the Foundation Office. 10 BEECHWOOD/BLOCHER FOUNDATION IRA Charitable Rollover gifts are back! W ith all the angst surrounding the “fiscal cliff ” and “sequestration,” something very positive came out of the legislative agreement to avoid the cliff for those 70 1/2 or older: the renewal of the IRA Charitable Rollover in the tax code. If you or someone you know has an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and is 70 1/2 or older, you can benefit from the rollover in several ways. For example, the rollover enables people to give tax-free donations to charity from their Traditional IRA account of any amount up to $100,000 yearly in 2013. If you were considering a gift to the Beechwood/Blocher Foundation and you would like to take advantage of this special opportunity, this would give you a wonderful option. We will work directly with you, your financial advisor and/or IRA administrator to ensure your gift meets all transfer requirements. If you would like more information on how you can support our Homes through this exciting new provision, contact Cheryl Wasson, Director of Development at 716/810-7370. Seniors and Social Media If you can CYF or CYM, then you are CPE!!* If you’re able to translate the headline above, then consider yourself a “SSS” – or Savvy Silver Surfer! Did you know seniors represent the fastest growing demographic on Facebook? Surprising, possibly, when you think that many of today’s seniors remember rotary telephones. Not so surprising when you realize that today’s families are more spread out than ever before, and technology has given staying in touch a whole new meaning beyond that “every Sunday telephone call to Grandma.” Seniors may not be as technically savvy as, say, their teenage grandchildren, but more and more of them are using social media as a way to keep in touch with friends and family. They Skype, they tweet, they post – all on a regular basis. The Internet and social media have revolutionized how families keep in touch, and provide a very efficient way for entire families to keep up on the latest news, often in real time. But silver surfers are doing MORE than just keeping in touch with family members. They’re locating college roommates, best friends from childhood and even past “crushes.” They’re viewing videos, reading (or writing) blogs, sharing pictures and surfing the Internet to research everything from travel opportunities to health information, fitness and shopping. They’re watching old television shows and movies, reading ebooks, playing games and getting answers to a myriad of questions. That’s why all of Beechwood’s affiliates offer free WiFi, as well as classes and one-on-one instruction on how to use the Internet. “We recognize today’s seniors are more technologically advanced than ever before,” says Cheryl Wasson, Director of Development/Marketing. “The Internet helps family members stay on top of our residents’ daily activities, health and other issues, so we make it a point to help facilitate that in every way we can.” * If you can Check Your Facebook or Check Your Myspace, then you are Coolest Person Ever! F Travel websites top the list of popular websites visited by seniors, at 87% followed by health websites (74%), local websites (60%) and real estate websites (57%). F Forty-seven percent of seniors ages 65-74 and 31% of seniors 75+ regularly visit shopping websites. F Thirty-two percent of seniors 65-74 get their news off the Internet. 11 BEECHWOOD CONTINUING CARE 2235 Millersport Highway F Getzville, NY 14068-1297 Our Mission: Guided by Christian values, we are committed to nurturing each individual's quality of living and aging by honoring personal values in a supportive environment.
