Exalted Ruler’s Message I can’t believe that we are already in August. School will be starting again soon and before you know it we will be celebrating Labor Day and wondering where the summer went. For me it seems like the year is going by extremely fast. I hope everyone had an enjoyable Fourth of July and were able to make it out to the celebration and fireworks at our club. I would like to thank the volunteers and staff who worked to help make for a great day for all our members and guests! I am told the event was well attended and a great time was had by all. Great job to the organizers, volunteers, and staff that made the day possible. My wife Donna and I had the honor and pleasure to attend the annual Grand Lodge Convention in Houston over the fourth of July weekend and represent Pontiac Elks Lodge 1019. We met many new people, made some new friends and enjoyed the company of our friends from Illinois as well. Being on the convention floor during the business sessions was informative, exciting and entertaining as well! We were able to talk with like-minded people from different areas of the country and found them all to be kind, genuine and dedicated Elks members. Thinking of how fast this summer seems to have gone, I thought back to when I was a new member of our lodge a mere 6 or so years ago. One of the things I remember about that time was a bus trip in the fall to the Hawthorne Racetrack for a day of watching thoroughbred horse racing. Donna and I met people through this event that we hadn’t had the opportunity to meet when we would be out to the club. The outing was well organized and featured a private room for our members with a buffet, bar and betting stations. We also got to go down and have our picture taken with the Elks sponsored horse after one of the races. It was a great day! I think those of you who went on that trip would all agree it was a fun and exciting day to watch the races. In the interest of transparency, Yes…I was that guy on the bus walking up and down the aisle taking pictures on the way home and when everyone was getting off the bus. Thinking about what fun was had going to the race track I thought I would ask all of our members if there is interest having a day at the races. I will be more than happy to organize and coordinate the event for a time in October if we have enough interest. Please let me know when you see me at the club or you can e-mail me at mscomens@ gmail.com to express an interest. As we move through August and into September I would like to remind everyone that our Elks Lodge has participated in the Threshermen’s Reunion parade for several years now and we will be looking for volunteers to help carry the American Flag during the parade. Please consider helping to carry the flag and recite the Pledge of Allegiance for the viewing stand and our community. Sincerely, Mike Comens Exalted Ruler VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The annual Threserman’s Parade is fast approaching and like we do every year – your Pontiac Elks Lodge will proudly display our huge American flag in the parade! If you can help out, please sign up on the sheet located in the bar on the bulletin board behind the door!
