Merging Exercise and Life Is Easier Than You Think
Getting those crucial 30 minutes of exercise a day as recommended by health experts
can sometimes be daunting. But exercise
doesn’t need to add to your daily tasks when
life itself may reveal the perfect solution. Physical activity doesn’t mean you have to join the
gym; you can seamlessly integrate exercise
into daily routines that you need to accomplish.
Maybe you think cleaning is a regular chore.
But the fact is doing household tasks can also
help raise your heart rate significantly enough
to benefit your heart health. Vacuuming, dusting, and mopping for 45 minutes will keep your
home clean and organized, and can be a valued activity for everyday exercise.
If you prefer being outdoors there are many
ways to integrate exercise into yard work. Gardening can provide many rewards besides the
obvious botanical harvest. Weeding and gardening for 45 minutes can burn up to 200 calories. Raking leaves, or washing and waxing

your car can all help raise your heart rate and
provide similar benefits as aerobic exercise.
Even a basic stroll around the neighborhood can help strengthen bones and muscles,
and be beneficial to your heart. For a lowerimpact option to walking, try cycling, which
can be great cardiovascular exercise without putting stress on your joints and bones.
Swimming may, in fact, be the best type of
exercise—especially for aging adults—as
it provides a full-body workout while putting
minimal stress on your body.
The potential for exercise is everywhere.
Converting daily activities into part of your exercise routine is as easy as choosing to take
the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator.
So don’t be daunted by thinking that you need
to devote large chunks of time per week to exercise. The world is your gym and membership
is free!
Allergies can be defined as your body’s
reaction to foreign particulates. Everyday
substances which induce this reaction commonly include pollen, dust, and dander, but
many other substances can also induce an
allergic reaction. An allergic reaction occurs
when your immune system produces antibodies it thinks it needs to combat unwanted
invaders that may be harmful, but which
actually aren’t. Common seasonal allergy
symptoms consist of a runny or stuffy nose;
watery, itchy, and red eyes; as well as sneezing and sometimes coughing. Many people
experience seasonal allergies and many
myths circulate regarding possible ways
to alleviate the symptoms and avoid allergies altogether, but here are some facts you
should know.
The most common cause of seasonal
allergies is pollen from trees, grass, weeds,
and other various plant life. Pollen count is
affected by temperature, wind, humidity, and
time of day you are outside. The worst type
of weather for seasonal allergies is a hot, dry,
windy day. Conversely, pollen count is at its
lowest on damp, chilly, soggy days. The best
days are usually the day after a rainstorm
when much of the pollen has been washed
away.
Geographical location also plays a major
role. Logically, the more variation and abundance of plant life there is, the more risk you
have in encountering allergens. Desert areas and the beach are said to lessen your
chances of encountering an allergic reaction
due to less vegetation. However, there is still
a possibility of contracting allergies from the
plant life that does exist there.
Most allergies develop during childhood,
and while a select few can outgrow them,
most people experience allergies throughout their lifetime—barring a location move
which may alleviate symptoms, but will not
protect you from contracting new allergies.
While there is no cure for seasonal allergies,
knowing what causes them is your best form
of defense. The more you know, the more
precautions you can take to protect yourself.

Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) intended. In late 2013, the two organizations
released an online risk calculator along
with new guidelines on lowering cholesterol. Not everyone in the medical community jumped on board. In fact, doctors
at Harvard Medical School criticized the
guidelines for increasing the potential of
cholesterol-lowering statin drugs being
prescribed. That’s because the calculator
may estimate an individual’s risk level as
being as much as 75%–150% higher than
it really is (Kolata 2013).

Going Natural with Your
Cholesterol Management
The Mayo Clinic, along with plenty
of doctors and other medical orga-
nizations, urges a healthy lifestyle to
help lower cholesterol. That means
no smoking, managing stress, eating
healthy, and exercising 30 minutes a
day most days of the week (MayoClinic
.org 2012).
An article in the Harvard Health
Letter makes the link between diet and
cholesterol clear: “If your diet gave you
high cholesterol, it can lower it, too,”
the article states (Harvard.edu 2009).

processed foods—increase your levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL),
the bad type of cholesterol. Instead,
choose foods with polyunsaturated
fats, which lower LDL.
The article further recommends
eating oats, whole grains, beans, eggplant, okra, nuts, vegetable oils, fatty
fish, soy, apples, grapes, strawberries, and citrus fruits to help manage
cholesterol levels. Also on the list are
foods fortified with sterols and stanols. These two plant extracts help to
block the absorption of cholesterol in
your body (Griffin 2009).
As you adjust your diet and other
aspects of your life to better support healthy cholesterol levels, keep
in mind that your options don’t end
there. Other nature-based ingredients
you may not have heard of, such as
the bergamot orange, can also help to
lower cholesterol.
The Science Behind
Bergamot
A 2011 study at University Magna
Graecia in Catanzaro, Italy, investigated the effects of a patented bergamot extract called Bergamonte™ in
animal and human studies over 30
days. The results were lower total cholesterol levels—including a reduction
in LDL levels and increase in healthy
high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels—a decrease in triglycerides, and
a reduction in blood sugar (Mollace
2011). That’s why Bergamonte™ is the
primary ingredient in the clinically

e seem to live in the Age of
Updates, especially in the
field of nutrition. New books,
internet bulletins, talk show hosts, and
media reports constantly inform us that
researchers have reevaluated this or that
food or nutrient, and have raised its relative value to overall well-being. Yet, it
has been over 20 years since the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of sulfur—a fundamental mineral required by
the body—has been updated by the US
Food and Nutrition Board.
It may be time to take another look
at this all-important nutrient: researchers who have studied the many ways in
which sulfur contributes to joint comfort and overall health have suggested we
may not be getting enough of it.
It’s Elemental
Sulfur is one of the fundamental components of life. Scientists have discovered
it plays an important role in building
and strengthening connective tissues
that hold our bones and joints together
(Metametrix 2009). We can replenish
our own much-needed organic sulfur
in the form of methylsulfonylmethane,
or MSM, from eating animal proteins
and plants rich in this life-sustaining
element, such as cruciferous vegetables
(cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, etc).
But modern laboratory testing procedures have shown that sulfur content in
foods cannot be taken for granted.
Modern mega-farming techniques
can overwork the soil and deplete it of
essential minerals. Farmers may try to
get around this by using more fertilizer
to meet production quotas, but the problem is some of the chemicals in fertilizers
have been shown to interfere with sulfur
absorption. Pesticides, too, can diminish
sulfur content (Seneff 2010). Even the
cooking process can reduce the amount
of sulfur in our meals (Mercola 2011).
The relationship between MSM
and joint comfort has been the subject
of many studies. MSM supports joint
comfort by promoting cell wall flexibility and permeability so that the blood
can remove excess lactic acid and toxins
while delivering nutrients and antioxidants to the joint tissue. When fluids can
flow freely, pressure tends to equalize
throughout the tissue, rather than building up in one location that would inhibit
natural, comfortable movement (Mindell 1997).
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 50 men and
women between the ages of 40 and 76—
all challenged with less than optimal joint
function—dietary MSM supplements
or placebos were given over a 12-week
period. The volunteers given the MSM
supplement were happy to report a significant increase in mobility and comfort
(Kim 2006). This may help explain why
athletes, no strangers to joint and muscle

MSM is also crucial to the physical anatomy of joints. Our bones are connected
by ligaments, a type of connective tissue
that also holds the joint in place. Tendons
are another type of connective tissue that
attach the skeletal muscles to the bones.
Connective tissue in the surrounding
skin forms an elastic covering. The main
component of all of these connective tissues, keeping them strong and flexible,
is a protein called collagen, which is created from dietary sulfur (Mandal 2014).

iber is a crucial part of your diet,
helping you to digest and move
food through your body to keep

But it also provides many other benefits
that people may not be aware of, such as
cholesterol and blood pressure support,

In a study done by The American Journal of Medicine involving 23,168 people,
it was discovered that more than 80% of

ber. Compared to those who consumed
more fiber, those who ate the least had
a greater risk of being overweight, having heart health challenges, inflammation, and metabolic syndrome (Grooms

Just How Much Can Fiber
Influence Health?
A number of studies have emerged
detailing fiber’s connection to heart
health over the years. These studies suggest that dietary fiber can be extremely
beneficial to the cardiovascular system
by helping manage blood pressure, cholesterol, and biomarkers of inflammation.
The National Institutes of Health and
the American Association of Retired
People recently released a joint study
looking at the effects of fiber on nearly
400,000 patients (Park 2011). They found
that those who ate a fiber-heavy diet had
the lowest mortality rates throughout
the nine-year study. In particular, men
over 50 who ate the most fiber had up
to a 56% lower risk of dealing with heart
and respiratory-related concerns. Women with a fiber-rich diet saw their risks
from those same concerns reduced by
59% (Park 2011).
Besides heart health, fiber intake has
been positively linked to weight management and improving insulin sensitivity,
which affects your body’s ability to break
down glucose and balance your blood
sugar levels. High blood sugar links back
to heart health because the enzyme that
produces cholesterol—HMG-CoA reductase—is more active when blood
sugar is high (Holt 2011).
Dietary fiber’s role in your diet can
also influence colon health. Colon
health-related conditions affect 1 in
20 people and it is one of the top-three
health concerns in the US. As recently
as 2011 a report concluded that around
64,000 cases of colon-related issues
could have been better helped by a diet
containing more fiber-rich foods (Cool

What Kind and How Much
Fiber Do I Need?
Fiber can be either insoluble or soluble, meaning that it either dissolves in
water or it doesn’t. Insoluble fiber, which
is found in whole grains, bran, nuts, and
dark-green leafy vegetables helps facilitate movement of food through your
system smoothly, consequently helping
to protect against colon and rectal related concerns (Cool 2013). Soluble fiber
dissolves into the bloodstream and is
the kind that can help support a healthy
heart by lowering cholesterol, balancing
blood sugar, and managing your weight.
Soluble fiber is commonly found in
foods like oats, beans (legumes), citrus
fruits, carrots, and herbs such as psyllium (Morgan 2010).

n recent years, experts have come to
understand the importance of folic
acid, also known as vitamin B9, to
neurological health. A growing number

Folic Acid Positively
Influences Cognition,

In 1998, the US Department of Agriculture, recognizing the importance
of folic acid in preventing birth defects,
began fortifying foods with it. The ensuing years have revealed the value of folic
acid in other areas of health, including

fortified foods, but find they still exhibit
signs of folic acid deficiencies. These difficulties become more common with
age. Additionally, one in three Americans are genetically unable to produce
the enzymes necessary to convert folic
acid into 5-MTHF, a fact that has longterm health implications.
These absorption difficulties have led
experts to favor 5-MTHF supplementation over folic acid, reasoning that since
5-MTHF is the biologically available
form of this vitamin, it would be immediately available for use without going through the metabolic breakdown.
The hypothesis is borne out in numerous studies, including two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled
trials. The first, conducted on healthy
women, found that supplementation
with 5-MTHF was more effective than
folic acid supplementation in increasing folate levels (Lamers 2006). The
same result was found in the second
study, which was conducted on women
who were genetically unable to produce
the necessary enzymes for breakdown
(Prinz-Langenohl 2009).

heryl Tiegs has worn many

caught up with Cheryl at her home to
discuss her life and its many achievements.
JOL: You continue to look vibrant and beautiful. What do
you do to take care of yourself?
Cheryl Tiegs: Anyone going
through a transition in age or health
needs to dig deep inside. It really
comes from doing the work yourself.
As yourself: How do you feel in the
morning? Remember all the things
you have to be grateful for. Listen to
your body. Move it around and start
with light exercise, walking, and just
standing instead of sitting. Get up out
of your chair! We all have challenges
at different times. Be good to yourself.
Of course, you should also have regular checkups. But mainly you have
to listen to your body. When you’re
quiet you can ask your body “How are
you doing? What do you need?” And
listen to what it has to say. Yoga and
meditation are wonderful ways to stay
in touch with your inner self.
JOL: That sounds like good advice! In addition to working out,
can you tell us about your diet?
CT: In the morning I have a little
oatmeal and green tea. For lunch,
some protein and vegetables; maybe
a small piece of poached salmon and
a cucumber salad. Then for dinner a
small, lean steak and more salad. I’m

lots of friends and it’s all very warm

JOL: What’s the most fun
you’ve had in show business?
CT: Spending time in Africa has to
be right up there. The animals and
wildlife are so remarkable and extraordinary and the landscape is
spectacular. And on a lighter note,
working with Seth MacFarlane on
Family Guy. Seth is such an incredible genius. I told him I had a crush
on Brian the dog and one day out of
the blue I got a call to play Brian’s exgirlfriend and I had a recurring role.
It was like I died and went to heaven.
It was so much fun working with everyone, doing the voice, and seeing
how it all comes together.
JOL: You’ve been actively involved in charity work throughout your career. What is the
most rewarding work you do?

CT: I’d have to say my various philanthropies: Being on the Board of

Capturing Moments with Your Mind
Lasts Longer Than Photos
Researchers advise that experiencing events helps us retain memories
more efficiently than recording them with cameras and other devices.

ur memories of the things that
we see and experience are stored
and processed in the part of the
brain called the hippocampus. Over
time the hippocampus builds upon its
data bank, creating the constant string
of memories which become the selfperceived stories of your life. If your
hippocampus was removed right now
you would be perpetually stuck in
time, unable to form new memories
(Matheson 2009).
Today’s technology allows us to document almost every aspect of our lives.
Through the use of cameras, phones, and
social media we can capture everything
we experience wherever we may be, instantly uploading that experience to a
social media platform, virtually allowing
anyone to look at it. This means our ability to remember each of these moments
should grow exponentially, right?

A recent study published in the
journal, Psychological Science, sought
to clarify the notion that the modern practice of documenting anything
and everything we experience on our
smartphones, cameras, tablets, and
other devices is having a negative effect on our ability to recall experiences
(Henkel 2013).
The study involved taking a group
of people on a museum tour. As they
made their way through the museum
and viewed pieces of art they were instructed to take pictures of some objects and simply observe other objects
without taking any photographs. The
next day after the museum tour the
participants’ memories were tested.
The results showed a “photographicimpairment effect”, which means the
participants remembered objects they
photographed less than the ones they
observed and experienced. They also
were unable to remember some of the
objects’ locations inside the museum,
and in some instances, when showed
photographs of some pictures they had
taken, they could not even remember
the object or taking the pictures (Henkel 2013, Dahl 2013).
Zoom Memory
A second part of the experiment, however, had participants take
zoomed-in photographs of certain
parts of objects. Results showed that
their recognition and detail memory
was not impaired when they took photographs in this manner. Not only was
the zoomed-in area remembered, but
other features of the object that were
not focused upon were remembered
just as clearly as the focused parts (Dahl
2013). This result shows that people can
offset the photo-taking-impairment effect if they are still required to focus
on some aspects of objects while photographing them (Henkel 2013).
Photograph a Little,
Experience It All
Lead author and psychologist at
the University of Fairfield, Linda Henkel, used this evidence of the mind’s
ability to focus on particular details
to comment on the bigger picture in
photograph taking, memory, and living in the moment.
“You can apply this idea to your
own life by sort of zooming in on the
moments that matter. Photograph
those moments and just live the rest.
Because photos can help us remember
experiences. There are probably a few
‘memories’ from your childhood that
don’t stem from the actual event, but
the photo of the event. But the sheer
amount of photos we take today means
that we don’t often go back and look
at them after we photograph them.”
Henkel uses a classic example of, “Oh
hey, I got to the Grand Canyon, let me
take a picture, and now I’m done.”
Deep in the Rabbit Hole
There are currently 16 billion photos shared on Instagram, the popular
visual-sharing social media site, with
an average of 55 million photos shared
every day (Nitrogr.am 2014). On the
photo album-sharing site, Flickr, there
are approximately 3,000 pictures uploaded per minute with a total of 5 billion photographs being hosted on the
site (StatisticBrain.com 2014).
It has become a daily ritual for
many people, mostly younger generations, to visually document every
experience (Van den Bergh 2013).
Various social media platforms allow
for the posting and sharing of each
photo, mapping the experience for
others to see. But with the astronomical amount of photos constantly taken
and posted, the brain focuses less on
the actual memory of the experience
and only on the documentation of it
(Richmond).
Experiencing, Documenting,
and Remembering
Today’s technology has made it easier than ever to record everything from
birthday celebrations to vacations to
events, and even the food we are about
to consume. However, as scientific research has shown our brains need the
full focus and immersion to remember the experience; not just through
the prism of digital imagery (Sullivan
2013). Living in the moment requires
your attention to that moment. It’s okay
to grab a quick snapshot to jog your
own memory later. But we live for experiences, and to get these experiences we
need to be immersed in reality instead

Concern over increased heart rates
initiated a study examining the effects of caffeinated energy drinks on
the heart and produced interesting
results (Thompson 2013). Conducted
at the University of Bonn in Germany
and presented at the annual meeting
of the Radiological Society of North
America, the study looked at 18 healthy
people—15 men and 3 women—with
an average age of 27. Each participant
underwent a baseline magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan before consuming an energy drink containing
a mixture of caffeine and taurine, an
amino acid responsible for numerous
body functions. An hour later another
cardiac MRI scan was performed to
ascertain what, if any, effect the energy
drink had on heart function. The scan
revealed a 6% increase in heart contraction rates after drinking the energy
drinks (Thompson 2013). Researchers
suggested the increase might be a result
of combining caffeine and taurine, and
expressed concern that energy drink
consumption could lead to the development of irregular heart rhythms and
other as yet unknown long-term consequences.

Away Kidney Stones

our kidneys are amazing workers.
They loyally work day after
day to help keep many of your
bodily systems running smoothly
and efficiently. The kidneys are expert
regulators with job specialties ranging
from filtering out toxins, balancing
water level retention, regulating blood
pressure, and keeping your cellular
acid balance in check (Healthline
.com). Because the kidneys are directly
involved in the filtering of wastes out of
your system they are connected to your
urinary tract, meaning that everything
you eat and drink has to go through
them before your body gets rid of the
waste (Better Health Channel 2013).
One of the more common concerns
when it comes to the kidneys, your urinary tract, and your overall health are
kidney stones. Kidney stones are solid
pieces of material, generally a composite of mineral and acid salts. Each year
more than 300,000 people are admitted to the emergency room for kidneystone-related problems (Dallas 2013).
Although kidney stones tend to be more
prevalent in women, both women and
men can develop them. Their formation
has been directly tied to diet, fluid intake, and how physically active you are.
However, a recent study stated that even
just a light amount of exercise done each

week can significantly reduce the risk of
developing kidney stones (Dallas 2013).
Knowing Your Stones
There are two types of stones that can
form under different conditions (NIH
.gov 2013). One type is formed from
calcium deposits. Normally your body
flushes out excess calcium through your
urine. However, sometimes high calcium consumption can form calcium oxalate compounds that make up calciumbased kidney stones (WHFoods.com).
The other type of kidney stone is
formed from uric acid. Uric acid is
regularly excreted through the urine.
Diets heavy in the consumption of animal proteins like meat, fish, and certain
shellfish may cause your uric acid levels
to increase, raising the chance of stone
formation (Disabled-World.com 2006).
Both types can become quite large. Besides being painful to pass, stones can
also get stuck in your urinary tract, causing infection and bleeding.
In the past 15 years, research has
found that kidney stones might be a
systemic problem, connected to many
other areas of health like weight management, blood sugar, and heart health.
Researchers have begun to connect the
dots and look at what can actually help
influence their formation.
A Study in Stone Formation
In a study published in the Journal of
the American Society of Nephrology, researchers thought to look at how weekly
exercise might affect the formation of
kidney stones in postmenopausal women. Analyzing data on more than 84,000
postmenopausal women dating back to
the 1990s, researchers took note of their
eating habits and levels of physical activity (Dallas 2013).
After factoring in their body mass
index (BMI), researchers found that
body weight was directly related to kidney stone formation. Diets consisting of
more than 2,200 calories daily also raised
the risk of kidney stones by 42% (Dallas 2013). The results led study author,
Dr. Mathew Sorensen, of the University
of Washington School of Medicine to
state that calorie intake, watching one’s
weight, and making efforts to exercise
were important factors to be aware of to
reduce the risk of kidney stones.
Future Risk Reduction
Dr. Sorensen and the other researchers emphasized that this study is only
the tip of the iceberg and that more research needs to be enacted on a larger
and more diverse population to improve
our understanding of kidney stone formation. Nevertheless, the results of the
study show that adding physical activity
to your weekly lifestyle could help reduce the chance of kidney stones by up
to 31% (Dallas 2013).
“Even small amounts of exercise may
decrease the risk of kidney stones,” said
Sorensen. “It does not need to be marathons, as the intensity of the exercise
does not seem to matter” (Dallas 2013).
The point is to stay active within your
own physical capabilities. This means
that your workouts needn’t be high intensity or strenuous; things such as light
gardening or yard work can serve as a
positive influence on your health.
Nutrition Knowledge
In addition to practicing healthier
habits such as watching your weight,
limiting your calories, and staying physically active, it’s also important to monitor what’s in your diet to help reduce
your chances of stone formation. Cutting your sodium intake, high amounts
of meats, and other animal proteins like
eggs and fish can also help you manage
your kidney and urinary tract health.
