As these programs are very popular and space is limited, it is important to begin thinking about your options for next year as soon as possible. The Joinery/Cabinet Making trade is a highly rewarding woodworking specialization. September 2013, next intake Motorcycle & Power Equipment Technician (Salmon Arm Secondary) [Thompson Rivers University partner] Students will learn to diagnose and repair various aspects of machines that use small engines such as motorcycles, ATVs and power equipment. September 2013, next intake Hairstylist (Cosmetology) ACE-IT PROGRAMS (Pleasant Valley Secondary) [ITA recognized program] Students will learn how to cut, dress, curl and wave the hair of a person. February 2014, next intake These programs provide students with Industry Training certification as well as provide high school credits. For concrete dates and application forms visit the Career Centre at your school. All students will be interviewed for a seat in these programs. Residential Construction (Carpentry) Professional Cook 1 (PC1) Electrical Foundations (A.L. Fortune Secondary) [Camosun College partner] Students will be instructed, (through flexible (on-line) learning, practical labs and work experience), in all aspects of commercial food preparation. February 2014, next intake Automotive Service Technician (AST1) (Salmon Arm Secondary) [ITA recognized program] Students will use their high-tech skills to inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles and light trucks. February 2014, next intake Automotive Collision Technician (A.L. Fortune Secondary) [partnered with Vancouver Community College] Students will learn about shop safety, tools, and the fundamentals of auto body construction and repairs through flexible (online) learning, practical labs and work experience. February 2014, next intake Programs are dependent of funding (Okanagan College) Each year a new house or other structure is built by the students. February 2014 – August 2014 (Salmon Arm) February 2014 – August 2014 (Vernon) (Okanagan College) August 5, 2013 – January 31, 2014 (Vernon) August 2014 – January 2014 (Salmon Arm) Welding Level C (Okanagan College) February 2014 – August 2014 (Salmon Arm) August 2014 – January 2015 (Vernon) @CareerSD83 Students have the opportunity to attend OC (Kelowna, Salmon Arm, Vernon) or TRU (Kamloops) to acquire tuition free trades training if they attend the programs during their time at high school. Students are responsible for student fees, textbooks, registration fees and accommodations. Pre-apprenticeship programs are available in such trades as Culinary Arts, Automotive Collision Repair, Electrical, Heavy Duty Mechanics, Welding C, Plumbing, and many more. These are very demanding courses that expect a lot personal dedication. For example, students can enrol in a variety of on campus and online business certificates (Office Assistant, Accounting Assistant, Legal Access Certificate....) through Okanagan College. Students can also enrol in academic courses on line and on campus [ie. Political Science on campus at OC Salmon Arm or English 100 through Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Open Learning]. (Okanagan College) August 19, 2013 – January 24, 2014 (Salmon Arm) February 24, 2014 – July 18, 2014 (Vernon) Search for: School District 83 More ACE-IT Opportunities Academic Programs Plumbing Foundations Visit the SD83 Website at http://career.sd83.bc.ca Students who work with a qualified tradesperson (i.e. licensed mechanic, electrician, butcher….) can sign up as a SSA (Secondary School Apprenticeship) and receive: 16 high school credits if they acquire 480 hours of paid work AND a $1000 scholarship (if they continue working or training full-time in the trade six months after high school graduation, or have 900 hours reported to ITA; graduate from high school; and maintain a C+ average or better on Grade 12 numbered courses).Students can acquire their hours during school time, summer, evenings, holidays and weekends. Students also have the opportunity to apprentice with a school district tradesperson in carpentry, painting, HVAC, plumbing and electrical.
