SPORTING DOG JOURNAL V DECEMBER 2010 IRUS debuted in October 2005 versus PVM’s KOSHA (1xW, 1xD more than 2 hours). It was the son of a famous Champion HOOCH. Victor from SD Kennels put the keep on Virus for the match. VIRUS began to attack the chest and shoulders very hard. At 0:40 he made a favorite hold in the armpit and worked the hold for the next 10 minutes with Kosha screaming in pain. He was picked up at 0:53 and courtesy scratched. In March 2006, it was Virus versus Chuk & Gek’s LEKHA (2xW). Lekha killed two opponents in less than an hour, but this day was picked up at 0:34 and courtesy scratched. The Championship match was in July 2006. The opponent was Dubrovin’s PETYA a son of PVM’s GR CH RED LIGHT. The battle began with both dogs swapping it out in the shoulders and head. At 0:30 Virus broke through Petya’s defenses and won after another half hour. Virus had the title of Champion for 9 months, after 4 months of rest he was again open. While we waited we kept hearing about two dogs, Wolchiha’s SANTIAGO (2xW) from the Urals Mountain and Kaluga’s MONGOL (1xW) a son of great warrior GR CH BARRACUDA. AC/DC, the owner of AC/DC’s SALVADOR - SANTIAGO’s VIRUS was born on the yard of Mustang Kennels in Ukraine. His father was the famous Mustang’s IKE (POR), who showed deep game. Ike carried blood of Dragan Radonic’s dogs and Country Boys dogs. He bred Ike (POR) to Rhonda (POR) from Patrick’s bloodline. This bitch was not a fighter of high quality but Mustang Kennels wanted very much to have puppies from IKE, the puppies born in October 2003. Soon, there was an enteritis outbreak in the kennels. A red male with a big head was the first who caught the virus and for this he received the nickname VIRUS. The enteritis was mild, and all the puppies survived. 4 sire - feared that a defeated SANTIAGO would prevent him from selling his “Alligator” dogs. So in order to avoid a meeting with Virus he made unrealistic demands and with long talks deadlocked the match could never be made. In the spring of 2007, BR Kennels from Moscow bought Champion VIRUS. They teamed up with SD Kennels (coach and handler of VIRUS) and performed under the name SDBR. SPORTING DOG JOURNAL DECEMBER 2010 In autumn 2007, VIRUS was matched in Moscow with MONGOL. After 35 minutes Mongol received a severe injury and was picked up, but he showed the gameness to continue the fight. The 5th match VIRUS was released in Chisinau (capital of Moldova Republic) versus Julbars’ KOSOY (1xW). This bulldog was from Greece and the son of the famous destroyer Julbars’ GR CH KITCHA. Kosoy was a tough dog with bad muzzle fighting style. Kosoy quickly and easily killed the Bulgarian champion in their first match, and some dogman experts were not giving Virus a chance to win. But Virus The Deep Game Mustang’s Ike, Sire Of Gr Ch Virus broke Kosoy down by the 20th minute. At 0:40 Kosoy was picked up and runs the courtesy scratch to the applause of spectators. Virus has become a Grand Champion, and he was retired after earning his title. Meanwhile, SANTIAGO became a champion. On the fourth match he goes against the Big Snake Combine’s CH WINSTON (Dog of Year - 2008). WINSTON in one year won four tough and long matches. Four months after that, he went up against the Champion SANTIAGO. WINSTON was down after 10 minutes of battle. No one had seen him in such bad shape and Winston lost. He was sold in Kyuveyt. After a year of rest, he easily won his sixth against two-time winner from Serbia. In 5th match SANTIAGO’s opponent was Juris’ LUCKY (2xW). In the first 20 minutes Lucky gave Santiago a good thrashing. Santiago hadn’t seen such problems yet. He was in defense and did a lot Wolchiha’s (Ex) Grand Champion Santiago, Scratch Magazine’s Dog Of The Year 2009 5 SPORTING DOG JOURNAL DECEMBER 2010 of strange movements and turns. But Lucky was an old dog and had heart problems. This has an effect in the match and Santiago turned the tide of battle. Lucky was picked up at 0:58. Santiago became Grand Champion and “Dog of Year – 2009”. Who was stronger? This question about VIRUS or SANTIAGO interested all Dogmen. And VIRUS returned after 2 years of vacation just to meet with Santiago. In the history of the Russian dog-game this was the first match between two grand champions. This historic battle took place in late spring 2010. I discovered that there were images of dogs doing the same type of thing that our APBTs do that looked just like our modern dogs. If that was the case, why was any cross needed? Some were paintings dated way back to Elizabethan times, and here, I’m thinking, in particular, of a hunting scene done by Peter Paul Rubens, the Flemish artist. Locked fast on the back of a large wild boar is a dog that could win a modern ADBA show! Other dogs are in the painting, too, but they were probably used for finding, trailing, and slowing down the boar, and they consist of Greyhound types and spaniels. I was impressed that these other breeds even existed that long ago. Obviously, the people of Shakespeare’s time had already learned something about selective breeding and keeping the different types distinct from one another. The fact is that there is evidence of Greyhound-type dogs even in Egyptian times (from artistic depictions) and of a robust battle-type of dog that looked very much like our dogs. Most of these dogs seemed to This painting done four hundred years ago shows a dog doing the sort of hunting work done today by members of the APBT breed. be quite large, and I’m not claiming that these were already Bulldogs— pictions). It seems to me that people who try to revert to the old history that has been told so often should at least have to defend doing so. They should explain why such a cross was necessary. Why did depictions of dogs doing the same type of thing for which our dogs are so renowned look just like our modern day dogs? And why were our dogs referred to as “Bulldogs” in casual conversation among those who had the closest connection to the old time breed? Why is it still used today? Ch Rockoon is a fine example of a modern APBT in conformation, as well as all the other good qualities, a champion pit dog of Rocca breeding. It is interesting to note that the old time Bulldog has been referred to as a “hound.” That would make such a dog prohibited from ownership by commoners, as hounds were hunting dogs. I suspect that it was under the auspices of vast communities of commoners that small Bulldogs were sometimes called “terriers” of some sort. Admitting they were Bulldogs would leave the people open to prosecution or persecution for having hunting dogs, something that was forbidden to peasants. All of this is just speculation on my part, of course, but I think that it is more than coincidence that Bull- Ch Steamer demonstrates the variation in color in the breed that seems to have been consistent throughout history. It is interesting to note that the show Bulldog very likely traces back to the same ancestral individuals as our dogs. It is simply selective breeding for different goals that has made the difference. 11 So such And SPORTING DOG JOURNAL DECEMBER 2010 compartments as shown in Table 1. Hi folks, in following up on one of my previous articles touching on the Importance of Water Management in our sporting dogs how often don’t we read the references by very experienced dog men about the supplement GLYCEROL only to hear the phrase, ”If you know how to use it”, without them revealing as to how to use it and what it actually does. TOP SECRET! Well, here you go! One of the biggest Myths nowadays is matching a dog as dry as possible. The rationale behind all this is that of course an overly WET dog will heat up too soon which is definitely true but in my humble opinion it’s even worse to match a dog too DRY! Where’s the bite and stamina our dog showed in his rolls when happily hydrated and or slightly over weight? Irresponsible use of DEX and LASIX and all to get a dog on its proper (?) weight is usually the culprit here so now a full explanation on its characteristics and its uses . Most (65%) of the total body water (TBW) resides within the individual cells of the dog’s body. This water is the solvent in which all reactions of the cell take place. It thus facilitates the generation of energy, the synthesis of new cell materials, the storage of products, and the detoxification of wastes. Intracellular water is also the medium of transport for all materials within the cells. The extracellular water is divided up between three spaces.1 The interstitial space (20% TBW) is the second largest compartment; it represents the water which lies immediately out- he late Dr. Rolland Lombard T Still, a working dog may tolerate a side of the cells and bathes them. Water loss from such a large surface area would put the animal at constant risk of dehydration if it perspired from its entire skin surface. In larger animals like humans and horses, a relatively small surface area and large volume inhibits heat dissipation. Dehydration due to sweating is less of a risk than heat accumulation in these larger animals. Most of the water a dog loses each day leaves its body through urine, feces, respiratory vapor, and saliva. The contributions of each of these factors depend greatly upon the dog’s Figure 1. Once it was established that glycerol solutions could induce a hyperhydrated state, the safety and efficacy of such a treatment for dogs exercising in cold and dry or warm and humid environs was investigated. In the cold weather study two age, ability, and sex matched groups of 12 dogs each were given either 1L of a 1% glycerol solution or 1 L of water two hours prior to a 30 mile run. This procedure was repeated for three days. Immediately after and six hours after each run all dogs were given access to 1 L of baited water. Blood samples for TBW, hematocrit, Figure 2. The ambient temperature during the experiment averaged -35° C. The dogs receiving the glycerol solution maintained their hydration at preexercise levels while those receiving just water became approximately 3% dehydrated (Figure 4). There was no difference in creatine kinase concentrations between the two treatment groups at any time in the study. In the warm weather study, 2 groups of 8 dogs each were treated and measured as described above for the cold weather study, except that they were exercised on a hot walking wheel in a warm (25° C), humid (85% Figure 3. Allen TORNADO, Ken Allen - DOUBLE GRAND CHAMPION 47 SPORTING DOG JOURNAL DECEMBER 2010 It is hard for me to imagine the kind of person who could do what Mr Guffey did with the Parkers and Ed Faron. Inserting yourself into a family, being the benefactor of their ongoing hospitality and then sacrificing them for monetary gain requires a mindset that I can’t fathom. This guy is pure sociopath. He serves no one but himself, with zero regard for the pain he inflicts. To perform his job he must be devoid of feelings and caring for people and animals. Contrary to the propaganda promoted by the Animal Rights groups, I believe most people who own our great dogs are good, law abiding Americans, with a moral code and a love of family and country. Guffey has been instrumental in causing the deaths of hundreds of dogs and destroying dozens of lives of dog owners. He deserves justice. Justice, for him, was being recognized by Mr Faron and losing his high paying job. He thought he was above ever being made in his job. He was wrong. Now he might actually have to work for a living. Anyone who is fantasizing about retribution against Mr Guffey to avenge the harm he has done should get this nonsense Thomas Guffy who is known in the dog world as JAKE Guffy is the snitch who is soley responsible for the raid at WSK’S. Jake resides in VA where he works for The Human Society making a yearly salary of 50,000.00. Plus he gets an additional 10,000.00 per bust and conviction of dogmen. Jake is approximately in his mid 30’s. Jake reports directly to John Goodwin. Jake has two residences in VA. One is a dog yard and trailer that he uses to fool fellow dogmen. The other residence is his true home. A luxury home with a beautiful inground pool. This is where he is Thomas Guffy the family man. Jake is responsible and involved in every raid ranging from Floyd, The Patricks, to Bailey. Jake is approximately 6’ 2” and is in very fit shape. He is known to ROLL dogs and attend shows. This man is/was the most dangerous and covert snitch to date. Guffy was identified by WSK himself from a photograph. WSK stated that Guffy indeed was the snitch who was accompied by an undercover Sheriff wearing a wire. 48 out of their mind. This is the absolute worst thing that could happen. If any harm should come to Mr. Jake Guffey, it would only serve to affirm the AR claims that pit bull owners are a bunch of criminals. Now, as always, our directive is to be good, law-abiding citizens, take top care of our animals and let Karma take care of the Jake Guffeys of the world. Take satisfaction that many witch hunts against innocent people may well be terminated because Jake has being identified. Let him now go find a job flipping burgers for a living. We need to always take the high moral road in our dealing with people like him. Expose him for what he is but then leave it alone. T.G.
