It also holds the third largest economy power by GDP and a fourth largest economy by purchasing power parity. JENESYS PROJECT 2.0 which shortens the entitlement of Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths is a new initiative announced by the government of Japan to effectively help to promote and strengthen our existing relationship between Japan and the Pacific Islands countries. The JENESYS 2.0 project is also aiming to revitalize the Japanese economy through the introduction of the Japan's attractions to foreign tourists and consumers by promoting international understanding on the nation's potential strength, allures and values. Regarding this exchange program, I am a successful participant from the University of the South Pacific whom I was given this very wonderful privilege to visit Japan to explore and discover its potentials and I experience its surrounding by exposing myself to all the first-hand information that I can proudly promote Japan for. The content of this report will heavily highlight all the aspects of cool Japan that I have encountered and experienced during this memorable trip which are categorized under Technology, Tourist attractions, Environment and the infrastructure. JAPAN YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM Page 4 2013 JENESYS 2.0 PROJECT 2013 GROUP D ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY Japan as one can tell, is the most world's leading country in many technologies and researches fields. As years goes by, the Japanese scientists and engineers had began to further expand their professional ideas to another advanced level which prompts them to venture out into unknown territories with a hope of contributing to the enrichment of the society. And as a result of their commitment in their work, it has widely attract the people's interest in the ocean, outer space and even to the future. Outline below are some of the places I have visited that really strikes me. I was really amazed to confront myself with certain technology I couldn't believe. 1. The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) It is a place or musem of emerging science and Innovation where we can be brief and understand unbelieveable things that is happening around in our modern world in a scientific perspective so that we can be fully consider what is awaiting us for our future. There are also displays and exhibitions that I did have a chance to enjoy hands-on contact with science and technology which was really awsome. I have also experienced the based classes and talks that really deepens my understanding and knowledge about how most technology works through the exploration of global environment and GEO-SCOPE space. PANASONIC CENTER PANASONIC CENTER IN TOKYO Panasonic center in also another science and technology center I did visited. It is a Corporate Global Communication Hub which aims to become a Green innovation company and has a vision of bringing about innovation in lifestyles and business with eco ideas for the earth. One very important thing I did learnt which was really interesting is that, in Panasonic they are inventing new ideas each day to produce their products that saves energy and which emits zero carbon dioxide. This is really what every producers should learnt from to be environmentally friendly. I was also introduced to something call "smart house" concept which was also really amazing to learn. It is a real-world model a home that is fully automated. A push of a remote button does everything at home eg. turns on lights, AC, bath showers, curtains, etc.. without the carbon dioxide emission and saves energy. This was really something I will never stop imagining how the ideas did come together to invent such thing as even a home like this smart house. Tourist or visitors can be really immersed in the Japanese historical sites with their history itself and culture on arriving into Japan and get a glimpse of the future through technological developments. I have discovered below are some of the attractions that disguises Japan and I recommend that you should experience them for yourself. It is something that for sure I have and you will cherish as long as we live. a. Meiji Shrine Temple Meiji Shrine Temple is a shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of emperor Meiji Shrine Temple cleansing Water Entrance to the temple Meiji and his consort, the Empress Shoken. Page 9 JENESYS 2.0 PROJECT 2013 GROUP D 2013 UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT Japan's environment as I have explored is really unique compare to all other countries I have been to. It is very unbelievable to see how this particular country is really into protecting and promoting its own nature to suit and sustain their daily living in both the cities and the country sides. The three most important practices I learnt from them is how to keep the environment more comfortable to live in especially in the cities, water resource management and forest reservation. Comfortable Environment. In the cities and everywhere I have visited the environment is so clean and fresh. I did also noticed that even though the cities can be very busy and crowded especially during the working hours, the surrounding is so quiet apart from vehicles and air condition noises. I was also amazed to see how Japan is beautifying its cities not only on the ground but also on relaxing areas in multi-floored buildings. Below are some pictures that amazed me a lot. Growing tree in between buildings Trees in the middle of the city Trees along foot path Trees growing in multi-story buildings Crowded but very quiet JAPAN YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM Page 10 2013 JENESYS 2.0 PROJECT 2013 GROUP D Water Resources Management. Japan is also very caution in reserving water through water recycling and establishment of river dam to help supply water to the cities during disaster periods. During my stay in Japan I did visit the famous Ariake Water Reclamation Center. It functions not only to provide an easy explanation of the role of cleaning wastewater and returning that water to the rivers and the sea, but also of the new role of using the treated water for train cleaning and toilets in buildings. I have also learnt that the way they are treating the water is very environmentally friendly. Ariake Water Reclamation center Chimneys with less CO2 emission Recycling lecture Observation of the recycling process Nakasujigawa Dam is also the main storage of water supply which is build to fulfill its purpose of controlling flood, water utilization and generating power. It is a fully computerized dam which is control in the control room using computers. I was really amazed to learn how this particular dam is controlled. Nakasujigawa River Dam Top view of the Dam JAPAN YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM Page 11 JENESYS 2.0 PROJECT 2013 GROUP D 2013 Forest Conservation Through reservation of thick forest, Japan is seen to largely contributing to reducing the impacts of green house effect. From the bus to Shimanto city I did noticed that reforestation is a common practice in Japan and also the establishment of agro forestry plots that reduce carbon emissions and increase crop yields, the training of "forest guardians" and park rangers, and more they aim to turn the tide on deforestation. Forest reservation Thick forest behind the rice field JAPAN YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM Agro forestry plots Page 12 JENESYS 2.0 PROJECT 2013 GROUP D 2013 CONCLUSION In conclusion, Japan is one of the unique country in the world which is not only famous for its high advancement of technology, but also its valuable culture, historical sites, industrial zones, and even for its traditional and modern buildings. Japan as I have experienced and explored, is really one of the country we all should learn from. The diversity of production towards the concern of the environment is also one of the major concerns that Japan is seriously taking into consideration. For this, they try to be creative in their own ideas to invent and produce products that are very environmentally friendly, which saves energy and time. All in all, as one can say, this was one of the most unique experience that I will always cherish as long as I live. It was a very interesting trip and I did really enjoyed every minute of it. Most of all, I was very fortunate to make new friends with the Japanese students, that I am quite confident will strengthen our long term relationships. JAPAN YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM Page 13 JENESYS 2.0 PROJECT 2013 GROUP D 2013 RECOMMENDATION This program was well organized and put in place, however, as a concerned participant, my perspective stands to strongly recommend the following suggestions: Japanese classes should be added to the curriculum of the University. Japan should involve more of their university students to participate in this project to enable socializing with the other youths from other universities who are part of this project. In order to fully understand their culture, it would be best for the participants to be placed in different family homes, and to see how they go about their daily routines.
