In 2015, E.F.G. Orchids celebrated their 75th year in business. George, our
speaker, represents the fourth generation of Hausermanns involved in the
family business. Founded in 1939 in Chicago, E.F.G. Orchids evolved primarily
to furnish the wholesale orchid market with cut orchid blooms and gardenias.
In the 1960’s E.F.G. became the largest wholesale producer of cut Cattleya
orchids in the world. Their hybridizing program produced crosses that are
known worldwide. In 1990 E.F.G. Orchids began selling orchids to the retail
market and began hybridizing many new Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilum. In
1999, E.F.G. Orchids sold most of their Chicago property and moved to
DeLand, FL. The FL location is their main growing operation with 20,000
square feet and houses many new orchid crosses, other tropical plants and
landscape material.

The BROS is the proud recipient
of the DASSA Award.
February is our most exciting month. Orchid displays will be transforming the Safe Schools
lobby into an orchid wonderland overnight! We expect a large attendance both Saturday
and Sunday as we had last year. Your help either day is greatly needed and appreciated.
AOS judges will be traveling to our show early Saturday morning, some on the road for
several hours. We thank them for their time and hopefully you will have an entry worthy
of winning ribbons and awards. Karen Khan & Phyllis Lyons are still filling a few empty
volunteer time slots so contact them and offer a couple hours. Please park your cars at
the far end of the parking lot so we have more room for those attending.
Exciting news about our 2nd Chance Phal Program….Alan LaDuke and I met with the Director of Patient Care & the Chief Clinical Officer at Hospice By The Sea here in Boca on Jan
22nd and they are absolutely delighted to become the recipients of our re-bloomed phals.
We presented them with the orchids that were brought to the January meeting. Thank
You to Adrienne Levy, Shirlee Rachel, Marilyn Collins & Alan LaDuke. The orchids were
dressed up with a bow, pretty cellophane paper and a Gift Card from our society. Many
families will enjoy the beauty of these lovely flowers, knowing that someone took the time
to think about them. Please keep up the good growing, keep adopting new ‘chids’ each
month and bring back yours. The better you take care of them the more beautiful they
will be when they are once again blooming and delivered.
More news….FAU has an orchid research lab at the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center in Palm Beach County near the West Palm airport. Pine Jog is one of the oldest nature
centers in the country. They have partnered with Fairchild Botanical Garden’s Million Orchid Project with growing and reestablishing Native Florida Orchids. The exciting part
about their program is that they are involving middle school children. We have our elementary After School Program and hopefully they can involve children from the Boca area
in their program as our elementary children transition to the middle schools in the near
future. Pine Jog 5K ORKIDS Run is being held on Feb 6 and we have made a donation to
enter several of our members/families to help support their project. I’m going with a few
others. You’ll hear my report at the meeting.
See you at the meeting.

Second Chance Phals
Exciting news!
Hospice by the Sea has welcomed our Second Chance Phals Program at their Center in Boca Raton. Lorraine Conover and Alan LaDuke met with Kendra McDonald,
RN BSN, the Director of Patient Care and Jacqueline Lopez-Devine, RN MSN, the
Chief Clinical Officer of Trust Bridge Health. They look forward to having our rebloomed phals taken to Hospice by the Sea.
They will mention Boca Raton Orchid Society and the Phal Program in their News
to Friends publication. We hope that many people will enjoy receiving the beautiful blooming plants.
We started this program March, 2015 in partnership with Whole Foods. Each
month 20 Phalaenopsis that have lost their beautiful flowers are at our Monthly
Meetings available to our members to take home and Foster.
Once they start to bloom again, they are returned to BROS and then be taken to
local patients in various hospitals, rehabs, etc.
The re-bloomed phals came from the first group of Second
Chance Phals given to us by Whole Foods in February, 2015
