Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, LAPD Chief Bratton, Councilman Huizar, and LAPD Hollenbeck
Captain Blake Chow hold a press conference to alert community of sexual predator in area.
On Sunday, June 3rd, 2007, between the
hours of 4 to 6 PM, a 7 year old boy, was
walking home from a local convenient store
at the intersection of Huntington Drive and
Portola Street in El Sereno a couple of
blocks from his home.
A suspect walked up behind the boy,
grabbed him and covered his mouth and told
him to be quiet or he would kill him. The
suspect then walked the victim approximately 60 feet to a building entry way, where he
brutally sexually molested him.
After the attack the suspect again threatened
to kill the victim if he told anyone. The suspect ran to a red vehicle and drove away.
The victim's father saw his son bleeding
when his boy got home and called the police
right away.
"This is a trauma that will haunt this innocent boy for his entire life, we need the community to come together to make sure this
suspect does not hurt another child" stated
LAPD Chief William Bratton. There have
been several leads that police have followed
up on but have not produced an arrest. We
are asking teachers, child care givers, parents to remain vigilant and keep your eyes
on your children at all times.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa stated that
Sexual assault of an innocent child is the
purest form of evil and we need your help to
prevent this predator from striking again
Chief Bratton gave the suspects description
as a Male Hispanic, 20 to30 years of age,
bald, with brown eyes. The suspect is 5' 7"
to 5' 9" and approximately 200 lbs. He has
tattoos of firearms on his left arm and a
naked lady on his upper right arm. The suspect was seen leaving the area in a red, 4door compact vehicle.
Detectives and Hollenbeck personnel
have canvassed the area for witnesses. They
have reviewed sex registrant files and
parolees, including Parole's high-risk sex
offender global position system (GPS). The
Cal Gangs computer database is being used
in an attempt to identify the suspect. A
Crime Analysis run has been conducted and
no similar crimes have been reported in the
area.
A composite sketch of the suspect as
shown of the front page of THE VOICE has
been prepared and Hollenbeck Area Police
Department has conducted community noti-
fications and outreach, including notifying
the local schools and distributing the
Community Alert. An alert was also sent out
through the Department's e-policing Internet
tool.

Man Killed;
Hit By Stolen Car Driven By Juvenile
An innocent 54-year old man was killed
Friday, July 6th in front of his 21 year old
son, by a speeding stolen car driven by a 13
year-old boy that crashed into their van in
the City Terrace, just east of Boyle Heights
authorities said.
Paramedics arrived at the 1000 block of
North Gage Avenue shortly before 11 a.m.
and pronounced the man dead at the scene,
according to California Highway Patrol.
Perfecto Cortez Aguilar of Los Angeles
died when a speeding Toyota Camry
smashed into the rear of the van and was
thrown from his right front passenger seat
onto the street stated authorities.
Aguilar's 21 year old son was driving the

the primary source for local information. We strive to make a positive impact on the
community by reporting news that is seldom found anywhere else in the media to
inform, and educate this community on what is going on in their front yard! We welcome community interest stories, and press releases. 95 % of all articles are written

Hello Neighbors,
Well it's pretty incredible
to us to announce that THE
VOICE turns 1year old this
month! It has been a very
interesting year for us from
starting out in just El
Sereno, to expanding our
coverage
to
Lincoln
Heights and Boyle Heights.
We have faced many
challenges this past year in
keeping the paper going.
Our success cannot go with
the overwhelming community support and the advertisers which believe in
what we do and believe in
being active in these neighborhoods. Between 85% 95% of the articles published in this newspaper
are submitted by the community!
We appreciate the interaction with emails, letters
and phone calls we receive
every month. The Schools,
Students,
Teachers,
Principals, Administrators,
Coaches, Churches, Public
Non Profit Agency's,
Politicians, Police / Fire
Depts.,
Neighborhood
Watch Groups, Businesses
and
Chambers
of
Commerce have con-
tributed to our continued
success.
We cannot forget to mention the heart of our organization which are the contributors and volunteers of
this publication, the writers, photographers, and of
course you the readers. All
of us make up OUR community, and the bottom line
that's what our publication
is all about! OUR COMMUNITY VOICE
We look forward in your
continued
participation
with us.
To George, Joe and Sal Thank you for all your

TWO FATAL SHOOTINGS
ON 710 FWY
of the right side of the van and onto the
street. The man died in the hands of concerned neighbors arms who rushed to help.
"There was a man on the street laying there
and they used CPR.
Our neighbor is a nurse and was trying
to help him out and then he died," says
Jacqueline Zandejas, a resident who came
out of her home to help. The 13 year old
suspect was not injured in the collision, so
he got out of the car and ran, but an alert
resident chased him down, said authorities.
One individual was at his residence,
heard the sound of a collision. He came out
and observed the juvenile exit the suspect
vehicle and flee the scene. He followed the
suspect along with a couple other concerned citizens and detained the suspect
until sheriff's deputies arrived and our officers arrived and took custody of the suspect." The Camry was stolen from the
same City Terrace neighborhood that same
morning.
The boy was not hurt in the accident and
is being held on suspicion of felony hitand-run, and driving a stolen vehicle. The
suspect was taken to the CHP's East Los
Angeles station.

Convicted Sex
Offender Gets Life
For Rape, Murder
at Lincoln Park
Restroom
A convicted sex offender who pleaded guilty
to raping and murdering a woman found dead in
a Lincoln Heights Park restroom was sentenced
to life in prison without the possibility of parole
this past month. “You will spend the rest of your
life in prison,” Los Angeles Superior Court
Judge Steven R. Van Sicklen told John Anthony
Romero Jr.
The 43 year old defendant pleaded guilty to
first-degree murder and forcible rape for the
Nov. 25, 2005 attack on Lori Lynne Bucks, who
was in her 40’s. Romero also pleaded guilty to
carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon
charges stemming from the theft of a car from a
guard who was providing security on a movie
shoot on Nov. 24, 2005.
The car was found the next day in Lincoln
Park, where Romero held police at bay for hours
before surrendering. Police later found Bucks’
body in a park restroom.
Romero was convicted in September 1988 of
forcible oral copulation and forcible sodomy
and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Armed Parolee
Confronts
Officers
Los Angeles: Officers fired their duty
weapons at a parolee who was armed
with a gun On June 19, 2007, during
the late afternoon hours, officers
assigned to the Parolee at Large Task
Force initiated a surveillance of
known gang members in the 800
block of West 50th Place. They had
received information that the suspects
were planning a "retaliation shooting"
as a result of a recent homicide. At
about 8:40 PM, detectives and officers
followed the suspects to the area of
Whiteside Street just outside of
Hollenbeck Division, in the County of
Los Angeles. They observed three
male suspects and a female suspect
exit their car. Celestino Carlos, 33, a
known parolee, whom they believed
to be armed, was one of them. The
officers elected to make contact with
the suspects and detain Carlos. As
Detective Wayne Caffey and Officer
Richard Jaramillo, along with other
officers approached the suspects,
Carlos looked in their direction and
ran westbound on Whiteside Street.
Carlos ran to the rear of 3621
Whiteside Street chased by Detective
Caffey. Carlos scaled a block wall and
fell to the other side into the backyard
of 3627 Whiteside Street. As
Detective Caffey climbed to the top of
the wall, he observed Carlos turned
toward him while holding a handgun
in his waistband. In fear for his life,
Detective Caffey fired at Carlos.
Carlos continued to run along the eastside of the residence. Officer
Jaramillo, who was on the next street,
saw Carlos turned toward him holding
a handgun in his hand. Officer
Jaramillo fired at Carlos and another
officer-involved shooting occurred.
Carlos continued to run to the front of
the residence where he discarded his
handgun and was taken into custody
without further incident. Carlos was
not struck by either of the rounds fired
and was not injured. His loaded and
cocked handgun was recovered at the
scene. He was arrested for Assault
with a Deadly Weapon on a Police
Officer and is being held on a $50,000
bail. None of the officers were
injured.

High Density Mixed Used Commercial Housing
VS
1st Time Homebuyers Program
By Jose Aguilar
On January 2006, Steve
Valenzuela
CRA/LA
Regional Administrator for
the Eastside Regional Area
project mentioned on the
2007 CRA/LA Budget
Narratives that CRA needs
to bring in a first time
homebuyers program that
has 60,000 subsidy for a
first time home buyers to
buy in the Adelante Project
area. The reason for this is
that Boyle Heights has currently a 75% absentee landlord rate. We are left with
only 25% owner occupant
rate.
The Community Redev
elopment Agency (CRA)
has failed to implement
ANY of
their
own
Guidelines starting with
EA1010 which provides
direct loans to property
owners for home improvements, EA1080 Housing
Trust funds for first time
buyers for assistance in
down payments and related
costs, EA1990 House Trust
funds for new affordable
housing within Council
District 14. EA2140 provides funds for interest-subsidy programs loans to
property owners of commercial buildings and
EA2700 is a program for
retention and restoration of
businesses in priority areas.
Our community wants low
density housing that creates
home ownership and helps
make renters into home
owners without creating a
huge unsustainable population high density influx into
our overly burden city
Infrastructure system.
This infrastructure which
includes parking availability that will lead to, permitted parking in the surrounding residential area and
which will lead to traffic
gridlock and draconian traffic mitigation measures that
will make our main thoroughfares into one-way
Boulevards.
Police coverage is at the
lowest levels of population
coverage area compared to
any other city in the United
States. What will happen
when all this high density
development becomes reality without building the
infrastructure first.
Due to global warming,
the Sierra Snow Pack is at
50% of its snow pack capac-
ity. The reduced water supply (e.g. Drought) will
increase expeditiously the
water rates will increase in
order to subsidize water to
an ever-increasing unsustainable high-density population growth in our region.

CONCERT AND
CAR SHOW
By Anthony Manzano
ROSE HILLS REVIEW
Many residents have come to recognize the event, as it has gained
popularity with the locals. This year
was like none other with a star list of
talent performing for the crowd. To
add a festival twist to the event,
Father's Day was one to remember
out at the El Sereno Recreation
Center.
Early on Sunday, June 17, 2007
with a slightly pre-arranged set-up,
classic cars rolled into the park to
display their pride and joy, low-riders. The Old Memories Car Club of
San Gabriel Valley was the featured
organization displaying automobiles. A number of auto manufactures from Alhambra Auto Row also
showed some of today's most popular vehicles.
With several years of experience
under his belt, Mike Romero the
event organizer received strong support from councilmember Jose
Huizar and they wanted to showcase
bands that have a legendary influence in the music industry. He start-
ed working on this line-up right after
last year's event, and the work
shows off. Together on one stage for
a super Father's Day Extravaganza,
six heavy hitters showed why they
are at the top of the talent list.
The show started out with the early
bands including: Rich Garcia & the
Midnight Cruzzers, Soto Band and
Rocky Padilla, at mid-day trophies
where handed out to the top vehicles
on display. Assembly Member
Kevin de Leon was on hand to present his best of choice, along with
Councilmember Jose Huizar. A representative of the office selected the
Mayors trophy, just as the office representative selected the Senator's
Trophy. That's when the music
kicked into high gear.
The main stage was filled with
musical talent from the Salas brothers who grew up locally in the community; Rudy and Steve Salas from
Tierra will be encapsulated in the
music industry for generations to
come.
As a treat for the audience, all the
way from New York, Mr. Joe Bataan
soothed the crowed with his Latin
flavor of expression, giving a little
bit of reality as he told a story of
how he sang with Ralphi Pagan and
was not here to only sing for the
crowd, but to give a message of
love. Nearly passing away eight
years ago by a diabetic attack, Joe's
message was clear, "kiss all the
things that you love."
With out much delay the next
group took for the stage after arriving in a limo, and the crowd knew
exactly who this band was. They
cheered and yelled for the group to
reach the stage.
W A R ~~ W A R ~~ W A R rang
through the voices of screaming
fans. The members stood up on the
main stage and announced that this
was a 'Reunion of the Original Low
Rider Band' and also claimed one of
the songs was "My favorite song
that a band called 'WAR' recorded
okay, this is their song, we're just
going to play it for you" and
bounced into a jumpin' original version of 'Cisco Kidd'.
The night drew near and the final
band to appear was Sly, Slick, and
Wicked who dressed in amazing
white three piece suites and still
pumped out a routine for the ages.
This group has not lost the ability to
show why they are sure 'fit-ins' in
the music hall of fame. Music is a
part of the soul; it makes us smile,
laugh, cry, and sing along at all
hours. That's why this Father's Day
was honored by the sounds of what
music is made of, legendary artist
that love to share their God given
talents for others to enjoy peace and
unity, see you next year.

Local Parent Volunteers
On
Saturday,
June
16th,
Assemblymember Kevin de León, hosted
an Annual Parent Volunteer award ceremony and luncheon at the Audubon Center
in Debs Park. The Assistant Majority
Leader recognized 25 outstanding parent
volunteers from El Sereno, Highland Park,
and Lincoln Heights for their dedication
and support to improve our community
and our children's educational future.
The parents and their children enjoyed a
lunch provided by El Arco Iris Restaurant,
a showcase of wild animals from Nature
of Wildworks, and each parent walked
away with a green goodie bag filled with
environmental friendly gifts. Utilizing The
Audubon Center as the backdrop, the
Assemblymember urged community
members to see the nature center as a
place where families can learn about the
environment; enjoy the outdoors and relax
as a family. The Audubon provides no cost
or low cost activities for children. This
event was sponsored by The Greater El
Sereno Chamber of Commerce.

Swimming is a fun and healthy way to
beat the heat. The Richard Alatorre
Swimming Pool at El Sereno Park is a year
round indoor facility which offers a vast
variety of aquatic programs from water
polo, swimming lessons, diving lessons,
adult lap swimming and water aerobics
known as aquacise which offers a variety of
low to high intensity workouts which last
approximately 45 minutes in length. This
class is taught in shallow water and is
designed for both swimmers and non swimmers. There are also deep water classes for
those persons comfortable in deep water.
THE VOICE found the staff at this facility to be great, friendly, knowledgeable and
helpful. The facility itself is kept very
clean. The decks get washed down every
day and the alkaline level is check often as
well. We found just about every age group
utilizing the pool. From kids to seniors!
This facility has a hydrolic handicap chair
lift that make easy access for physically
challenged individuals from the pool deck
to the water and back out after they finish
their swim.
The pool also has grants available to the
first 500 people which allow you to use the
pool for free. Another way to use the facility for free; is to use your City of Los
Angeles Library Card, it is a program in
place that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa set
in place last year. If you don't have a library
card the cost is $1.50 per day.
The indoor pool is heated and is open 7
days a week. For more information on the
programs, cost and schedules of some of
the programs they offer call:
