CERT Training
New Uniforms for WHS Marching Band
Local government prepares for everyday emergencies. However, during
a disaster, the number and scope of incidents can overwhelm
conventional emergency services. The Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT) program is an all-risk, all-hazard training. This valuable
course is designed to help you protect yourself, your family, your
neighbors and your neighborhood in an emergency situation. Training will
be held at the Hollenbeck Police Station located at 2111 E. First St., Los
Angeles 90033. Contact Vera Del Poza via email at:
veradelpozo@yahoo.com or send text to: (323) 646.0758
Just in time for band competition season, the Wilson High School
Marching Band received their long awaited new band uniforms. Thanks to
everyone who helped the marching band raise funds and to their Band
Director Brian Hollet, who enjoys leading these talented musicians every
day. It was not easy raising these funds but with the combined efforts of
Wilson High School, marching band, Our Town El Sereno, and lots of
alumni and community supporters, it was made a reality.
Sign up for FREE CERT classes today. Classes are available from 7:00
PM to 9:30 PM on the following Dates:

Big dreams for El Sereno
youngster who wants to
be World Champion.
By Julio Torres
I
’ve been noticing my
neighbor and his son
come home late each night,
so I start chatting with
him. Enrique Lopez tells me
about his 11 year old son
Osvaldo and his passion for
boxing and how he wants
to be a World Champion
boxer just like his idol Saul
“Canelo” Alvarez from
Mexico.
“Ozzy” tells me how he
makes sure all of his
schoolwork is done before
he starts training five days
a week. “I love boxing says
Ozzy, I want to be the best
and hopefully win a belt
one day”. This inspiring
youth is surely on his way,
he has entered local boxing
tournaments including one
in Kansas. “I want to be the
best, so I want to fight the
best” he says.
Good luck to you Ozzy!

BEE KEEPER
Local Bee Lover Enjoys Sweet Hobby
V
icente Jaramillo loves bees. He’s been tending to his worker honey
bees for a long time in El Sereno, supplying his friends and customers
with the golden honey year round. Jaramillo started his passion for bees
and bee keeping in Mexico when he was a young boy. He would show
off his bee keeping skills to his neighborhood friends who would marvel at
his fearless hobby. “I would go out at night to the bee boxes and pull out
the honeycomb with my hands to show my
friends”, he said. Even though he’s been
stung plenty of times, he has no fear of bees
but respects them.
I asked Mr. Jaramillo why he chose the hills
of El Sereno and Rose Hills for his bees and
he said “I love these hills and so do my
bees”. While up in the hills I noticed his huge
crop of Cactus on his property and he said it
reminded him of his Rancho back in Mexico.
It all starts with a Queen Bee that he orders
from Hawaii and from there the worker bees
do their thing and in time there is sweet
honey. He has about a dozen bee boxes but
when it comes time to harvest his honey he
does not wear a traditional beekeepers suit,
just some smoke to relax them and his bare
hands.
Honey jars sold in front of
his home in El Sereno next
to the public library. Bee
pollen is also available
If you’re looking for some El Sereno honey, Mr. Jaramillo sells jars at his
home next to the public library on Huntington Drive and he’ll set up shop on
his doorstep next to the mariscos truck who sometimes carry it themselves.

RUNNERS
El Sereno Middle School Students Run Los Angeles Team
What is SRLA?
SRLA is a program to train middle school and high school students to run
and complete the Los Angeles Marathon. El Sereno Middle School is one of
the many LAUSD schools that participates in the program. ESMS has
participated in SRLA for at least 10 years. In the past four years the team
has expanded from about a dozen students to 35 this year. Our program
has become very popular on campus. In fact, several Wilson students
continue to train with us!
What is the purpose?
Our primary goal is to complete the LA Marathon. But, just as importantly,
the students learn how to set goals, make healthy food choices, and apply
what they learn from their running accomplishments to their everyday lives.
What makes SRLA unique?
SRLA is different from typical competitive sports. Even though running is an
individual sport, the kids understand they are part of a team and the
strength of the team is what gets us through the marathon training season.
There are no “try-outs.” Students make the commitment to show up for
practice and they earn a spot on the team. We take any student regardless
of running ability or experience. Also, the leaders (coaches) participate
alongside the students for all the races, including the marathon. Several
parents run with us and support the team at every practice. The leaders
give their time on a voluntary basis.
Next race is the So. Cal Half Marathon on Saturday, January 7

We run on a “shoe-string budget.” We gladly accept donations or gifts.
Please contact Jeffrey Stemnock at jeffrey.stemnock@lausd.net if you

students will run more than 300 miles before the Marathon on March 18.

DANCE STUDIO
Local Dance Studio Offering Free Children Dance Classes
hanks to FUSION Performing Dance Academy (FPDA), a non-profit (501(c)3) organization, El
Sereno and the near by communities continue to enjoy learning the moves they see on TV
and films. Albertossy Espinoza, Executive/Artistic Director and Founder of FPDA, set a goal of
offering all children dance classes FREE of charge to the community. After almost a year of hard
work, dedication, fundraisers, and the support of the community, his goal has come to fruition. As
of January 2012, all children dance classes ages 3-14 are FREE!
T
Espinoza is extremely grateful to his students both children and adults that followed him to his
new studio and have been faithful to him and the growth of FUSION. “The studio would not
survive without the support of my students.” states Espinoza. “They are the ones who keep me
going and motivate me to move forward” continued Espinoza.
The new studio located at 4400 S. Huntington Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90032 at the intersection of
South Huntington Drive and Fern Place continues to keep its doors open to promote character
development, self-confidence, and leadership for all students. The “FREE Children Dance
Program” includes an array of classes including Ballet Fusion, Modern, Pre-Dance and Hip Hop
Fusion for students ages three to fourteen. New classes will continue to develop to add teens and
professionals.
Adults enjoy a fun way to increase stamina, lose weight, and build confidence in the academyʼs
most popular classes, Latin Rhythm Cardio and Cardio Boot Camp. The Body & Mind and Yoga
classes are designed to enhance vitality and a sense of well being through yoga and stretching
training that enables participants to gain improved flexibility, balance, a strong core, and
ultimately, relaxation of body and mind. A new class offered now is Beginning Salsa on
Wednesday nights 8:00-9:00PM, no experience necessary. The class is taught by a community
member, Diana Rios Jasso who is part of the Los Angeles Salsa world. We also offer
Quinceaneras and Wedding Dance.
Fusion cordially relies heavily on charitable donations and/or sponsorship. We are currently
seeking donations to ensure that any student the wishes to take his/her first dance class can do it
for free. Please visit our website for more information, www.fpdacademy.org or call us at,
(323) 342-9179. Donations are tax deductible, and they will help put a smile on the face of a child.

Dining With Anthony And Deidre
W
T
elcome again faithful readers to another new year, we hope you’ve enjoyed our December review of Rick’s Drive In and Out and Sinfully Sweet Apple
Company. This month’s issue, we are very excited to add two more great restaurants to add to your dining list of great food finds..
his January we are excited to share another delicious find we found by word of mouth,
Tamale Man, located at 3320 N. Eastern Avenue in El Sereno. Owners, Martiza and
Carlos Melgoza, have created tamales from traditional home recipes from grandmother,
Guadalupe Santos Moreno. In the late 70’s and early 80’s from her home kitchen on Vaquero
Street in El Sereno, Guadalupe made tamales for family and friends. From the popularity of
her tamales, they decided to open a restaurant in El Sereno that brings the traditional tamale to
the public to enjoy. Anthony had the pleasure of speaking to the owner’s son, Charlie
Melgoza who is now taking Tamale Man to new heights. Through his warm account of his
family history, we can truly savor the flavors of tradition in each bite. We are lucky to meet up
with Charlie, who informed us that they are preparing for a gourmet food show up in San
Francisco this month, which should help Tamale Man’s popularity spread out beyond El
Sereno. Charlie also mentioned that there will be two more new tamales in the near future
which will add to the savory tamales already on their menu. Tamale Man offers a variety of
choices to choose from including chicken, cheese, pork, beef, sweet, red chile and green
chile. The popular dishes requested by the customers is the Tamale Breakfast with over-easy
eggs on top of your choice of tamale and another favorite is the Menudo, which is served
Friday to Sunday. You can also pick up a gallon of their Original Tamale Sauce for $15.

A
nother delicious find is La Abeja, located at 3700 N Figueroa Street in Highland Park.
Our wonderful friends, Manny Izurieta and his wife, Veronica Siordia Izurieta brought us to
this great find for breakfast one brisk morning. The Izurieta family have frequented this local
favorite for many years and we are very grateful that they invited us to such a great Mexican
restaurant. We like the fact that the owner, Rogelio Fonseca is very friendly, down to earth and
makes you feel like your part of his family. We simply love this restaurant which opened in
1969 and has been making the locals happy ever since. While enjoying friendships at
breakfast we noticed the cornucopia of family togetherness, friendly good vibes and warm
coziness. We also enjoyed looking around at the nostalgic memorabilia on the walls of the
restaurant. Anthony liked the Steak Milenesa with rice, beans, salad, potatoes and tortillas.
Deidre liked the Tocino con Huevos or ham and eggs with rice, beans and tortillas. We can
relate with the local news station NBC who ran a story on why La Abeja is such a great food
find. You can’t go wrong with this hot spot of good food. We hope you try out La Abeja!

XMAS SPIRIT
Plenty of Christmas Spirit in the Community
Article by Jaime Urbina
D
uring the Holiday Season we often hear about certain companies or individuals who on a yearly basis extend themselves to families in need. We have
seen or read about the Fire or Police heroes who deliver gifts to the homes of children who without their act of kindness would not have had a present to
open on Christmas Day. Well this story is about another group of heroes this Holiday season, your water delivery team from Sparkletts in Highland Park,
who this season not only delivered water, but most importantly they delivered smiles. The supervisors, led by Damon Cruz, for the past five years have
gathered their employees and encouraged them to donate money from their own pockets to benefit a needy family. In total, they sponsored five families this
year who received several gifts for each child and gifts to the parents as well. They included new bikes, a Wii system, several toys, gift cards to Target, Toy
r Us, and Food for Less and also new clothes. Each supervisor made certain every family they sponsored obtained plenty of gifts and their employees didn’t
disappoint them. Irene Altamirano is one of the mothers that was sponsored and shared these kind words after trucks of Sparkletts filled with gifts for her
family stopped by her house. “I was speechless and shocked of what these individuals did for my family. It has been a rough year for me and I have cried
myself to sleep several times these past few days as I knew I wasn’t going to be able to provide a Christmas for my three kids. But thanks to these amazing
people from Sparkletts, my kids will now have an awesome Christmas to remember. I just can’t believe that a group of strangers would be willing to extend
themselves to a family they have never met. To see the look in my daughter’s face when she saw her new bike is something I will never forget. It’s like these
guys were Angels sent from Heaven and it feels good that my prayers were answered.”
Being a witness myself to this gesture of Love and giving was truly touching and I was fortunate enough in being able to witness three other families who
also received generous gifts from Sparkletts employees. Words can’t describe how surprised the families were and of how thankful they were for what they
received, but it was amazing seeing the smiles in the faces of the kids once they saw all the gifts they were given. The Sparkletts Family definitely made a
positive lifelong impact in these five families. So the next time you see that green truck pass by, make sure you wave at them as they not only delivered
water this Holiday season, they also delivered Hope and Joy that positively impacted the lives of others which we all know is the true meaning of Christmas.
Here are some other events Holiday events that also deserve recognition:
From left to right: Matt’s Merry Mule Toy Drive at Hecho En Mexico restaurant. Christmas at Barrio Action Youth & Family Center. El Sereno
