On Tuesday, September 7th, the buses began rolling in at 6:40 a.m. and the hallways were soon filled with
students heading off to class for the start of 2010-2011 school year. Although our school is crowded, with
over 3,000 students currently on the rolls, the first week was a huge success! Upper classmen assisted those

Our successful start was partially a result of this year’s New Student/Freshmen Orientation. Over 700 students attended the orientation on August 27th. They were quickly placed into groups where student leaders
and faculty volunteers introduced them to the building. Tours were provided, students were able to see how
the cafeteria and attendance office work, locker assignments were distributed, and students were treated to
a fashion show modeled on the show “What Not to Wear.” Attendees also had the opportunity to meet the
administrative team, the counseling staff, our school nurse, our school resource officer, and our security specialist. Students who attended the orientation are reminded to use their free ticket to our first home varsity
football game on Thursday, September 16th, when we take on Garfield High School.
I would also like to thank all of the parents who attended this year’s New BHS Parent Orientation on Saturday, September 11th. Approximately 250 people came to meet the administrative team and counseling
staff and to hear about the programs and resources we offer to students and parents. PTO President Linda
Heartley and Athletic Booster Membership lead, John Brosnahan, encouraged those in attendance to get
involved with the school community. As Mrs. Heartley pointed out, the research clearly shows that students
whose parents are actively engaged with the school are more likely to be focused, successful students. Please
be sure to check out the school website for opportunities to join one of the many organizations that support
the school.
A special “thank you” goes out to Kirby Black, manager of Eggspectation, for donating the food for the
welcome back breakfast for staff during the work week. We also thank our friend Steve Johnson, manager
of Chicago Uno’s of Gainesville, for donating food to the PTO for the staff luncheon at the close of the
workweek. We appreciate the generosity of these businesses and hope you will support their restaurants
when possible.
Thank you also to all of you who have designated Battlefield as the recipient of your Target card school
points. We recently received a check for $1,250 from Target; this money will be used to directly benefit
students through the purchase of four LCD projectors. See page 6 of this newsletter if you information on
how to link Battlefield to your Giant, Harris Teeter, or Bloom cards.

I hope everyone has enjoyed a fun and restful summer! My name is Julie Byrne
and I am thrilled to be the new Director of School Counseling at Battlefield. I
worked as a school counselor for eight years at Osbourn Park and five years as
Guidance Director at Osbourn High School before joining the staff at Battlefield in July. I am very excited to be here and look forward to working with
students, parents, and faculty to make this the best year yet.
September brings an opportunity for a “fresh start” for everyone and I encourage
students and parents to approach the new school year with optimism. My advice to students is to get off to a strong start and continue building momentum
all year, rather than having to play “catch up” later on.
Parent involvement is a key component to student success and there are many
ways you can support your student. If you have questions about your student’s
progress in school, please consider:

contacting the teacher by e-mail or phone
speaking with the school counselor

As educators, we know that we do a better job of teaching a child if we have the
help and support of parents. We are eager to work together to help each child
receive the best education possible.
Schedule Changes
In the past few weeks, we have been experiencing an unprecedented surge in new
student enrollments. Consequently, the vast majority of our classes are full or
have only a small number of seats open. At this time, we cannot honor requests
made based on student preferences, including the change of class levels. Level
change requests will not be considered until the end of the first nine weeks.
Senior Visits
Counselors will be visiting with government classes beginning in mid-September to review graduation requirements, career planning, the college application
process, financial aid, important dates, etc. Each senior will meet individually
with his/her counselor to review and solidify his/her plan.
Senior Information Night for Parents
The Battlefield High School Counseling Department will present a Senior Information Night for parents/guardians on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 7:00pm
in the school auditorium. Topics will include graduation requirements, postgraduate planning, and the college admissions process. We strongly encourage
you to attend this important meeting and look forward to seeing you there!

College Fair
The Western Prince William County Regional College Fair will be held at Osbourn High School on Monday,
September 20, 2010, 7:00pm - 8:30pm. Approximately 100 colleges and universities will be represented. All
seniors and juniors and their parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Osbourn High School is located at

PSAT – October 13th
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will be given to all 10th
and 11th grade students at Battlefield High School on Wed., Oct. 13th, 2010. This is a standardized test that
provides firsthand practice for the SAT. It also gives students a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs
and gain access to college and career planning tools. All 9th grade students will take the Revolution Prep
Practice SAT test on the same day - Oct. 13th.
Students will be given their room assignments the week before the test and asked to report directly to their
testing room on test day. The test will run from approximately 8am to 11am. All seniors will be involved in
senior activities and programming while testing is underway.
The Counseling Center staff is committed to the academic, interpersonal, and career success of every student
at Battlefield. Please check our website and future newsletters for information regarding classroom guidance activities and counseling services. Please contact your student’s counselor if you have any questions or
concerns.
Student Orientation Synopsis
Over 700 students attended this year’s new student orientation on Friday, August 27, 2010. All new students
were greeted by our Battlefield High School cheerleaders and our AFROTC cadets who helped direct our
new students to check in and report to the Auditorium. Students were welcomed by Ms. Ethridge-Conti
and SCA President, Katie Agnos. Students then rotated through 4 sessions which included: A tour of the
school, an introduction to our Counseling Department, Administration and Security, and a session about the
importance of attendance. Students were served lunch, watched Battlefield’s version of “What Not to Wear”,
and received wellness information from Tina Fairbanks, our school nurse. Each student took home a packet
of pertinent information to help them become even more familiar with Battlefield. A special thank you to
all of the student and teacher volunteers that helped make this event a huge success.

children’s school sites with the same user
name and password they had last year.
They do not have to register for a new
user login.
• However if a parent has a child new
to PWCS schools, the parent will have

- A networked black-and-white printer is available; all pages cost $.05 each.
- Computers for research and school work, a scanner, and coin-operated copier
are available before, during (with a pass), and after school.

We recycle printer cartridges and cell phones (no chargers or cases, please). By

Time to Re-Link
Bonus cards need to be registered each year! Specifically, Giant Bonus Bucks and
Harris Teeter cards ask parents to re-register their cards at the beginning of each
school year. Please take a moment to log on to one of our three programs we
participate in to verify your registration is current. Below are instructions to help
you easily navigate each stores website. Thank you in advance!
GIANT – Log on to www.GiantFood.com. Click on Our Stores and go to
Register Your Card. Fill in the two blanks with the first three letters of your last
name and your Giant Card number. There is a phone number to call if you do
not know your Giant Card number. The BHS school ID# is 04594.
HARRIS TEETER – Register online at www.HarrisTeeter.com. In the paragraph
Together in Education, click Re-Link to Your School and fill in the required
fields (choose this option even if it is your first time registering). Drop down
menus to locate your school are provided and the link will be automatic. Our
school code for Harris Teeter is 6851. Don’t forget to use your VIC card at the
Pharmacy as well!

Senior and Underclassmen Photos
Senior Parents,
If your senior missed his/her appointment for their senior portrait over the summer, Herff Jones will be at
Battlefield from September 15th – 17th to take make-ups. A sign up sheet will be available in the front office
for appointments from September 7th -14th. Appointments are on a first come, first serve basis. Please be
advised, these are the last days for senior photos. After September 17th, Herff Jones will no longer be taking
senior portraits for the 2010-2011 school year.
After your senior has taken their photo, Herff Jones will give them instructions for how to view and choose
their proofs online. From there, they will need to choose the photo they would like in the yearbook by November 5th. If a photo is not chosen, Herff Jones will randomly choose a photo for the yearbook. Please be
advised, photos taken by Herff Jones are the only photos that will be accepted for publication into the 2011
Battlefield yearbook. If you have any questions, please contact Meghan Hackett at hacketmk@pwcs.edu.
Underclassmen Photos
Herff Jones will be at Battlefield from September 21st – 23rd to take underclassmen portraits. Ordering
information will be distributed through the English classes prior to the photo sessions. Should your student
miss one of these photo days, Herff Jones will return for make-up sessions on October 28th and 29th.

The department welcomes three new teachers -Nicole O’Keefe (ESOL), Mallory Trowbridge (Spanish)
and Kristine Carney (French).
Our department continues to grow. This fall we have
2201 students in our language classes. We have 402
French students, 113 German students, 152 Latin
students and 1,536 Spanish students. We wish them
all a successful year academically. We also hope that
their language study proves enjoyable.
In the spring, the French Honor Society and the
Spanish Honor Society elected new officers for the

There are several important dates coming up quickly. On
September 9 and 10, people will be sized for performance
uniforms and bobcat shirts during class. This will only
pertain to freshman, new students in the program, people
who are in Chamber Ensemble for the first time this year
and those who think they will need a differently sized
uniform for this year.
On September 25, Senior Regional auditions will take
place at Potomac High School. Those who are in Chamber are required to audition, but anyone else who is interested may audition as well. On October 2, Junior Regional auditions will take place at Lake Ridge Middle School.
This audition is only open to freshman students and it is
optional, not required.
There is an opportunity to attend the October 1 performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Arts Society of
Washington at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
This is the first year that we will be having a fall concert
on October 14.
On November 10, Senior All County auditions will take
place at Brentsville High School. Those in Chamber are
also required to audition for this, but again anyone else
who would like to audition is welcome to do so.

The Battlefield High School Social Studies Department is prepared for another exciting year of classes
that span a wide array of content areas. Government
classes will begin the 2010-2011 school year with an
introduction to the birth of democracy. Geography
students will analyze and evaluate maps as well as
learn basic terminology of the geographical discipline. World History students will learn the important early civilizations that still work to shape our
modern world. Psychology will be investigating the
practices and principles of Psychology. Students will
explore the impact of biology on psychological issues. Social Studies own Joe Schelzo, a U.S. Government and Leadership Seminar instructor, will supervise SCA Elections during the month of September.

Welcome incoming freshman and new students to the
Battlefield High School Orchestra Department and welcome back returning players. We are excited to enter the
beginning of another new school year, but there is a lot
of information that needs to go out about the program.
There are some more distant dates that should be remembered as well. The Winter concert is going to be on
December 9. We will also be playing Christmas carols in
Manassas Mall on December 20 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM.
Orchestra Festival is tentatively scheduled for March 16
and 17.
On April 7, Solo and Ensemble will take place at Gainesville Middle School.
There will be a spring trip to Allentown, PA on June 4 &
5, in which we will perform and then go to Dorney Park,
Baltimore Aquarium and Medieval Times.
These events may all seem like they are far off, but they
will come quickly and a lot of hard work goes into them.
Concerts and any auditions are to be taken very seriously.

WelcomeBack!!! Girls Basketball
has been hard at work this summer and looks to continue building towards a wonderful basketball season. Our ladies kept busy
with community service, running
a basketball camp for kids, and
attending two camps (one local
and one at VCU in Richmond).
Meanwhile, we were also putting
in the work at open gyms filled
with conditioning and weight lifting as well as time for the ladies
to work on their skills. This Fall
figures to stay busy for the ladies
where they will have opportunities
to attend at least two open gyms a
week, weight lifting, conditioning
and participate in a Fall Basketball
League that we host her at BHS on
Saturdays as well. To stay updated

this summer, going 4-3 at both the
JV and Varsity levels at VCU Team

Head Coach, said to her son after
getting cut from 6th grade basketball team and wanting to get better had asked her for help, “I can

engine”. In the end you decide
how much you want to work in
order to improve your game. The

you just need to take advantage of

BHS Athletic Booster Club
DECA

Battlefield DECA has BIG plans this year! We offer many opportunities for ALL
BHS students to get involved in community service, competition, and social
events. We are the largest club at BHS and we take great pride in what we offer
students. Our first meeting will take place in the enclosed cafeteria on Tuesday,
September 14 at 2 pm.
You might be thinking..what is DECA? DECA is available for all students to
join who are eager to get involved in community service and social activities.
Students who take a marketing or finance class AND have a competitive edge
DECA offers a variety of opportunities for competition on the district, state and
national level through a variety of projects.
Last year, DECA members donated over $6000 for charity, out of 38 district
events 32 awards were received, earned the highest honor a chapter can earn
on the state level, eleven students competed on the national level, we were a
national finalist for our community service project and beat out over 220 other
chapters, gave out 2 senior scholarships, and 37 students earned a BHS letter.
This year many more activities are on the calendar to include the launch of our
new community service project “Because it Matters”. We look forward to seeing
many old and new faces at our first meeting on September 14, in the Enclosed
Cafeteria.
Satellite Concession Stand Grand Opening !!
The Athletic Boosters will be providing a second concession stand during all
home Varsity football games. This stand will be located in the grassy area near
the Spirit Wear Shack – look for the white tents. Anyone interested in helping

The Bobcat School Store is now open for you!
The school store is open and ready for you! Do you need a sweatshirt or a Bobcat T-Shirt? We got it. Many of the newest and coolest sportswear items are in
stock. Checks and cash are the accepted payment forms. We plan to have the
school store open for the New Parent Orientation on Saturday, September 11,
from 9 - 10:30 a.m. During school, the school store will open during 4th and
5th block during all lunch shifts and we are located within the enclosed cafeteria.
